God’s Plan Begins to Reveal Itself – if You Relax

Yuba City, California – In the ‘90s there was a craze for what were called Magic Eye images. These were sheets of chaotic computer-generated patterns. When looked at the right way, a vivid, three-dimensional image unrelated to the pattern would jump out at you. Once you saw it, you could not not see it. My kids and I loved these images. We would pick up books of them at Cracker Barrel. We would show them to friends, some of whom would labor for a long time to get the image to pop up. A few unfortunate friends could never get the image to pop for them – and thought that we were making it up. Except when you gave the image to random people and asked them to write down what they saw when it popped, all wrote the same thing down. You could not see it by looking intensely at every detail of the pattern. Actually, the more you relaxed your vision, the more likely you were to see it. Some made it pop by crossing and then uncrossing their eyes. Quite a few only saw it as they gave up and started to look away. If you don’t relax your focus, you will never see it. The image atop this article is a Magic Eye image – and a very appropriate one. I am debating internally whether to tell you what it is at the end of the column or just wait for some trusty commenter to get it first.

In the world and in the Church today there is a lot of senseless chaos. But a pattern is emerging – or perhaps more the shadow of a pattern. When I try to relax my focus to see a Magic Eye image, there is often a moment where it kind of blurs and I can feel the 3-D image about to emerge. Sometimes it does right away, but sometimes it slips away and I have to start over. Have you noticed that the elites of both the world and the Church are separating themselves from ordinary people more and more? Last week, Pope Francis was a featured speaker at the Clinton Global Initiative, where he hectored us about climate change while delicately avoiding the subject of abortion – one of the Clintons’ priorities. The elites are not so much talking to us as they are talking to each other, reassuring each other that they are the smartest and prettiest people in the world. Since the world increasingly rejects their self-image, they increasingly reject the average people of the world. They are isolating themselves, retreating to high places where they can worship their idols unmolested by the populist rabble. They seek to rule us by dictate from those high places.

One of the oldest strategic rules of battle is to isolate those you seek to defeat. It is much easier when they are all together, but separate from the larger populace. It is striking to me that the elites are retreating into what they think are safe places. I guess they figure they have enough power that segregating themselves from the body of the populace they would rule is not dangerous.

I wonder, though. Is God prompting them to isolate that they may all be gathered together when the wrath to come strikes? Are they retreating because they just can’t bear being near people who are not like them? Is their arrogance and hubris so great that they just don’t want any contact with those they seek to rule? Do they view us with the instinctive disgust with which they would view a garden of slugs? Does any of it matter? The fact is they are isolating themselves from regular people – and have absolute contempt for the idea that God could strike out with wrath over sins that cry out to heaven.

I think I’m onto something. They can laugh, but I think they would be well advised to beware the wrath to come, for God is NOT mocked.

If that is how it unfolds, a lot of good, faithful people are going to be threatened by the violence of the storm. But the rules will be different. Those who seek to save themselves by the ingenuity of their own minds will endanger themselves, even get swept up for at least a time. It is by adopting a radical dependence on God, then focusing on the next right step that one can walk fearlessly through trials when the wrath of God reveals itself. Even then, you’re going to get rained on and occasionally lose your footing. I think we are about to take a walk through the valley of death. There is no preparation that will get you through that except complete trust and reliance on God – the next right step.

The elites of this world think they are pacifying the masses. I think they will be shocked as they assure each other of “peace, peace” that their assurances are followed by sudden destruction. Let your faith be pure as beeswax; let it be as sacrificial as lamb’s blood – then walk with humble confidence before the Lord.

You can’t see the developing pattern if you are looking intently at every detail. That will, in fact, prevent you from seeing it. You have to relax. When you get it right, it will pop into focus out of the swirling chaos.

Last week Democrats won a special election in a heavily Republican-leaning Statehouse district in New Hampshire. Now, that state has the tiniest statehouse districts in the country. Only about 3,000 total votes were cast, so it could be a true outlier rather than a bellweather. BUT Democrats have been practically sweeping special elections this year across the country.

Many Republicans, listening to the siren song of the polls, argue there is nothing to worry about. Others nervously think that abortion is killing us.  

It is a fact that we have let the left aggressively seize the narrative on abortion with lies and scare tactics since Roe was overturned. Democrats call any restriction on when an abortion can be performed a “ban.” They lie that no one supports late-term abortions…yet seven states offer no restrictions at all while another 17 only mount the fig leaf of the mother’s health (if the standard is just “health” rather than “physical health,” states interpret that to mean for any reason – including that the woman feels depressed). We have to take back the narrative.

Now it could be that Dems are doing so well despite terrible messaging because there is something we aren’t seeing. It could be that the Dem fraud machine has gotten so proficient they can take whatever they want. If it is the former, the GOP is doing little to figure out what is going on – just whistling past the graveyard. If it is the latter, the GOP seems determined to pretend like vote fraud is the quaint thing it was in the 1960’s – and can only be successful when a race is close. Denial is not a strategy – except to Republican leaders.

It could be that the general populace has lost any concern for family and liberty as well as faith. Just keep a gov’t check coming and enable our licentiousness. If that is the case, we have a collapse ahead of us far more epic than that of the Roman empire.

The left is aggressive and tireless. The political right lacks all conviction and is presumptuous. Do you see why I insist that there is no political solution to this situation? This is the hour of the ordinary man. If we don’t each step up in our homes and neighborhoods great, indeed, will be the fall of the once-great nation of America.

I am not near as convinced as I once was that Tyler, Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland is going to be deposed by a Vatican gone rogue from Christ and the Magisterium. The complaints from Rome have all been political rather than substantive. Ousting someone in a fit of political pique is a good way to get excommunicated from the Church Triumphant.

But while orthodox Bishops in this country have never given Bp. Strickland his due for his fidelity and restraint under difficult circumstances, he is suddenly a rallying point for orthodox Bishiops throughout the world. Abp. Vigano, Abp. Schneider, and Cdl. Muller have all very publicly rallied to his cause. I hear rumblings that more prominent names are in the offing. The Vatican thought to rid itself of this “meddlesome Priest” and suddenly finds all eyes on it.

Understand, leftist activists – both in and out of the Church – are trying to walk a tight line, piling offense on top of offense but desperately wanting to avoid an open, large-scale revolt. I think they miscalculated on this one and know it. Now they have a tiger by the tail and are not sure how to back off and save face.

God bless Bp. Strickland. He has both a gas pedal and a set of brakes – and knows how to use each to great affect. He boldly proclaims the Gospel with fidelity whatever anyone else says, but lives obedience without agreeing to immolate himself. I said at the start of all this that this persecution marked Bp. Strickland for prominent leadership in the renewed Church to come. It tickles me to see that bold, prudent leadership is already manifesting itself. He is a hero for our times and, I think, a saint in the making.

The first time I ever saw Saguaro Cactus I was traveling along the southern border of Arizona. I was shocked, for they were a sorry-looking sight. Tattered and rotting, they looked like bedraggled survivors of Cold Harbor (the bloodiest battle of the Civil War) slouching back to camp. Coming down to Phoenix from Flagstaff, I was delighted to see nothing but robust, healthy specimens who looked eager to get in the game. As I got closer to Phoenix, there were a few wounded veterans, but they were still fit and ready for service. I don’t know why I am so delighted to find that the Saguaro Cactus is doing just fine. Do not drive along the Arizona-Mexico border, though, except at Halloween. The cactus down there are downright spooky.

Flagstaff is a fascinating place. For a good 30 miles all around it, it is more like a midwestern town than the vast desert that surrounds it. I saw meadows that would do the best Wisconsin dairy towns proud. And it gets a lot of snow each year, to boot. If Flagstaff were hidden, I suspect there would be a phalanx of sincere scientists ponderously explaining that it did not exist and could not exist. With its proximity to the Grand Canyon, I have come to think of the Flagstaff area as the place where the desert pauses to catch its breath.

It was great visiting with MP in the Phoenix area. He had a lively group of people gathered for a talk. I think we may end up getting a regional coordinator out of that meeting to take some pressure off of him. Here’s a secret about MP you didn’t know: he makes the best potato salad I have ever tasted. He’s the man who keeps all of our systems running smoothly, fending off cyber attacks with aplomb – and cooking to boot.

I spoke in Las Vegas for the third time ever. I asked the folks that our LV major domo, Margie Wong, assembled, how often it rains in Las Vegas. They said very rarely. Hmmm…it has rained every time I have spoken there. Maybe a good CORAC fundraising tool would be to get the city fathers to pay to have me come when a drought is on – and to have me stay away when things are normal to avoid the flash-flooding that always accompanies rain in this desert city.

  1. I do love your observations about the self-isolation happening among the elites, Charlie…and your unceasing exhortation to live radical dependence on God. The core message, embedded in your writing since the inception of your first blog, has become an anchor now in the ever-intensifying wildness of this Storm. How graceful and grace-filled is the elegance with which you express it here: “Let your faith be pure as beeswax; let it be as sacrificial as lamb’s blood – then walk with humble confidence before the Lord.”

    Magic Eye pictures have not been my thing as I have very poor depth perception due to a persistent lazy eye throughout childhood. Even with a surgery at 18 years of age, my eyes simply do not work together. It’ll be fun to see which early reader uncovers the image!!

      1. I actually researched a bit about why it’s impossible for some eyes to see the hidden image, Linda. My condition is one of those which makes it nigh impossible as my eyes do not work together in a coordinated way. I’m also among those in the population for which cilantro tastes like soap. 🙂

                  Btw Charlie this is sort of a cute true story I just heard about last evening!!! Globetrotting Tommy and Liz dropped Jax off for an extended stay and they were telling us they woke up yesterday morning to a baby squirrel 🐿️ in their house!!! To make a very very very long story short, when they moved here two years ago from DC Jax was just a newborn and they were all discombobulated so in haste, they bought a home sight unseen. Dumb move which in their greenness they didn’t realize then, but they sure get it now!!! The house was a lemon 🍋!

                  Some guy flipped it covering up all the unbelievable major defects! They’re still in a lawsuit over it and hoping to get a little bit of the wasted money back! I guess the guy is a swindler and does this all the time but they STILL shouldn’t have bought the house without us elders looking at it first!

                  Anyways, if you’ve never seen the movie, “money pit,” it’s basically “the story of Tom and Liz’s life!” Lol 😂 after the lawsuit is over, they’re going to watch it but just can’t handle it at the moment!!!

                  I think the baby squirrel 🐿️ in the house is probably a good indication of what’s yet to come!!! They did corner it to one room and opened the door and he got out but where’s momma squirrel??? Anybody’s guess!

                  So the significance of this long story maybe NOT so short is that I told Tom and Liz that having a squirrel 🐿️ in the house MAY BE A GOOD SIGN since Charlie’s group mascot is a squirrel 🐿️! Tommy, in particular, was fascinated by that!!!! And then I explained to him that squirrels ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO GET INTO A BIRDFEEDER etc etc etc… and he smiled and said well that’s good news, mom!!! Maybe it means our luck 🍀 is changing and the squirrel 🐿️ is a good sign!!!

                  Believe you me, I was surprised he listened so intently and GOT IT!!!! May all squirrels 🐿️ be a forever sign of hope🥰🙏🐿️✝️👩🏻‍🍼🍀⛪️😇🍋 🐶

                  Sort of cute today, after Jax woke up, he put baby Jesus in his crib along with a Winnie the Pooh blanket and Winnie the Pooh book! He noticed baby Jesus had a diaper on like him🥰🥰🥰 He thought maybe baby Jesus would like a soft bed for a little while 🥰

      1. Well, these days, when I relax my eyes, I see two of everything, and the two rarely align. So, I will trust y’all seeing it. The eye doc had a name for it, which I immediately forgot. In the eternal order of things, it is unimportant – but it means I can’t shoot (straight) either! 🙂

  12. I doubt I’ll be the first to describe it but I’m happy to report I got it right away, even before I read the article. Angels at the top, the Blessed Virgin Mary at the bottom with the Christ Child. Saints in the middle along with religious symbols.
    That’s the general description.

        1. The problem, Kris, is that you can’t look for it. If you do, you will never see it. You have to relax your focus and, maybe look past it. When it pops, it does so in full, unmistakeable detail.

        1. That’s excellent, Kris. It says something for all of us. Sometimes we don’t pay enough attention and miss things. But sometimes we study too closely and it blinds us. We have to see both the trees and the forest – and know that our initial perception is NOT the last word. I thought this was rather a fun way to illustrate an important reality.

  14. OK, I can see them, but since I’m so early I decline to say specifically, but the three images plus a smaller in front..suddenly became obvious. 💜
    Flagstaff has been one of my favorite places on earth. Maybe it’s the trees or the trees and lack of traffic on the highway…🤷🏼‍♀️ not sure. And maybe it has changed since the last time I was there, but it is beautiful to me in my memory.
    I was in Las Vegas once…it was also beautiful the short time I was there – many, many years ago and leaving at dawn, it was lovely.
    I was thinking a lot along the same lines as you, Charlie: are they disgusted of us or afraid? Or maybe they have suddenly realized just how big and diverse our continent is? Cities, small towns, farm lands & desert…and that’s only parts of Oregon! I understand that north is us Washington has rain forests and that south of us there are redwood forests (I’ve been there!). There are cowboys and cowgirls with guns and horses and then there are racers with fast cars 🚗💨 Parts of the country speak in ways that other parts cannot understand! And all of us are pretty darn independent in spite of the government checks. They are asking for trouble if they suddenly stop our Social Security! How many senior citizens live here? That is our money that we worked for and you’d better keep it coming. 😄
    Just my random thoughts.

  16. Brilliant piece, Charlie! Though I haven’t been able to see the image, the idea of stepping back and allowing God to help me refocus is so necessary! A friend and I attended the survival program in Ft. Collins this past Saturday and we both walked out feeling overwhelmed. Since we had a good drive ahead of us, we talked the day over and came to the same conclusion you did in this piece: trust God and do what we can in front of us. We cannot save the world, but we can pray and be faithful and gather our family and friends into the fold. Begging God for graces!!

    1. Jewel, Ed first presented his excellent program to CORAC people here in Missoula. Our take-away after the day of being immersed in his vast knowledge was just what yours was on your drive home. The hour IS late, yet, continuing immersed in God and taking whatever next right steps to which He calls us, we can have confidence that God will supply that for which we are deficient. And of all the things spoken on the day of our conference, the one that sticks with me is this: When we take care of the weakest among us, we will all get through whatever is to come.

  17. Don’t laugh, but I actually watched a youtube video to help me to figure out how to “see” the image. I can easily see the sausage with my hands, but for the life of me cannot consistently see the images in the tutorial. 😦

    One bright spot was the comments in the tutorial video. Some people said stuff like since childhood they couldn’t do this, but now they can! Aaaargh! Hope springs eternal!

I think I saw it!  Glad you didn’t tell us.  I leaned back in my chair and got as relaxed as I possibly could.  Then the 3-D came into focus.  I saw 3 crosses.  One in the front and two behind.  On the main front cross I think I saw it turn into a demon’s large face and like something shooting from the hands downward.  But the hands could be rays of His Divine Mercy.  Not sure if that was a horse on the ground with the front legs rearing up or the solder her thrust His sacred side with the lance. Am I close?

    Jesus baby!!! His will be done! I did use ivermectin and upped vitamins n zpak I’m working today 🥳 cough was so bad I felt like a head of lettuce 🥬 in a lettuce spinner!!! Lungs 🫁 still ache and frozen veggies and ice packs helped throughout worst pain! Poor Jesus !!! He didn’t even have that during His passion! I told him I’m sorry He didn’t have Ice and a warm blanket for the chills😩😩😩. Rsv going around over here in my neighborhood ! Be prepared!!! I’m still on the ivermectin

Not sure it was rsv but there have been a few in our neighborhood with it so there must be a test??? Felt different than a cold or flu.             Sort of a cute story here… like most serious Catholics, (and even some not so serious,) we have a few crucifix’s in each room – some on the wall; some free standing. Per usual by “serious catholic ,” grandmother 👵 encouragement, I often hand Jax the crucifix and let him gaze upon his savior giving him ample time to contemplate Jesus’ boo boos!

            We’ve been doing this for a few years now so he knows Jesus as “Jee jee!” 😂

            Anyhow, long story short – well maybe not so short – 😂. Mike bought me a beautiful diamond 💍 cross crucifix many years ago! I love it very very much but secretly would have preferred a simple one with a corpus on it. I Obviously I didn’t want to hurt mikes feelings so I of course never told him what I just told you! Lol 😂

            Two days ago I was rocking Jax for his afternoon nap and he caught a glimpse of my diamond cross! He grabbed it, inched a bit closer to it and said, “Gamma! Where Jee Jee go?” 😂😂😂.

            I laughed so hard!!! Oh out of the mouths of babes😂🥰🙏👵❤️‍🩹😆😂

  25. Magic Eye images always gave me trouble. Near-sighted.
    I think the key word here is “RELAX.” Our priest leader of our MMP group (who is also our Diocesan exorcist) has said this to us often. I have been so busy with the tasks of my work that I have found it hard to focus on my own preparation and relax. Our parish has been so busy that we have had to have three concurrent RCIA classes this year. I have had so many uncatechized teenagers come forward for sacramental preparation that I had to begin an extra class. And many couples are coming forward to have their marriages convalidated and that list just keeps growing.
    The harvest is great!! Praise our Lord Jesus Christ. I intend to work until the end of the day though I started early in the morning. I have begun a holy hour for vocations here in our parish. We have 89 parishes with only 91 diocesan priests. The need is great, the laborers, few. I pray for all of you so I hope that you can also pray for us. Somewhere, in all these souls that Our Lord, the Holy Spirit, is bringing us, there is bound to be at least one vocation! I am determined to support that soul in prayer. I pray especially that I do not miss an opportunity to encourage a vocation in a young soul so that, as the Lord plants the seeds, I can offer the holy water and hope He makes the manure I tend to spread very fertile indeed.

YIKES!!!!  Loved the article, and has given me some soothing thoughts.  Over here, there is so much heaviness do to f the Maui fires, and the questions most asked and unanswered of WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?  The body counts go down, which is a farce, as we know many families missing.The roads were blocked for those trying to leave Lahaina.There was no water for the firemen to put out the fire.  Hoses were LITERALLY turned off at the beginning of the peak of the sweeping fire.According to the DofEd there are still 1100+ children still missing, either burned alive to ashes or worse (down from 2000 by their numbers).This whole things read of dirty deeds.So reading this article has been therapeutic for me, to let go and let God, with overwhelming tears.Thank you for letting in vent off topic. If someone is savvy enough to draw the outlines of the picture of the crucified Christ, with Mama at the foot, along with the other details, I would be in deep appreciation…fore I still not see it through my moist blurry eyes.Mahalo nui ola , and God bless all here.Aloha

  35. I always have had a hard time seeing these. My wife’s advice worked for me. Hold it right up to your nose and slowly move it away while focusing as far away as possible. I guess the lesson for me is to see what is really happening right under my nose, I need to focus on the the eternal. And oh, listen to my wife.

  36. Well this Magic Eye led to a headache! I have to admit I tried a few times first but then had to look at the comments. Even tried the nose to the screen trick. After many attempts, (including bumping the screen with my nose and losing the picture a couple of times), I finally saw it! My eyes don’t like me very much right now. lol. Still trying to adjust back to normal, whatever that is.

    I do appreciate this lesson Charlie. Just like I had to look deeper inside then pull away to see the picture, I have to look deeper inside and pull away from me to see what He wants me to see, not what I want to see. Oh yeah, and r-e-l-a-x. I seem to have forgotten what that is like lately. Thank you for the reminder. ~juls

How I love St. Vincent de Paul and have felt deeply connected to him on many levels of his life. In addition to being born on his feast day, I was delighted to be born at the Hour of Mercy, 3pm. Added to this, I just discovered last week that on the old Church calendar, September 27th is the Feast of Our Lady Stella Maris!! A trifecta of Heavenly connections. Oh All of Heaven, pray for us as we journey onward in this Storm of storms!!

    1. Diane, there have been quite a few videos going around about the October 4th emergency alert. The ones I’ve seen do not look like solid analysis. Rather, they are brimming with speculation and fear-mongering. Our CORAC Comms people are not concerned about the FEMA test.

    2. I noticed a slightly different format when checking out.

      Re FEMA alert October 4 at 1:20 CT. Seems like the prepper sites are pushing faraday cages although a file cabinet, old fashion cookie tin; even wrapping phone in aluminum foil will suffice.
      (One site said to make sure it’s turned off completely or the battery will drain trying to find tower signal through those impenetrable covers.). My daughter and son will be asking their daycare providers to turn phones off at 1:15 pm central Wednesday so all those piercing alarms on the caretakers phones don’t scare the kiddos. Some sites say turning volume off will not silence the alarm.

From Feb. 11, 2011 to Aug. 21, 2012, he walked 3,200 miles across the country, sleeping in the woods, meeting people and praying as he went. He writes on cultural, global and political issues from an orthodox Catholic perspective. He emphasizes that we find God most surely through the ordinary, doing the little things we should with faith and fidelity. His constant refrain is that, to live real joy, we must acknowledge God, take the next right step, and be a sign of hope to those around us. He lives in the Archdiocese of Denver in the United States.
