Laying Down the Trump Card

Glowing holy card depicting Saint Joseph holding Jesus among winged demons

By Charlie Johnston

Just over a month ago I told my son about Trump Accounts for the kids. Frankly, these are the greatest things since Harry met Sally.

Because they give a seed deposit of $1,000 for every child enrolled who was born on or after Jan. 1, 2025, some folks have gotten the mistaken idea that those are the only kids who can be signed up. Wrong. Any child under 18 can be signed up for an account. Those born before Jan 1, 2025 just don’t get the initial seed money. You have to make the initial deposit yourself.

The truly exciting thing about them is that various philanthropic entities and people can make deposits themselves – and they are, based on regional and other criteria. Wealthy donors LOVE it. They can make donations directly in which ALL the money goes to kids, entirely bypassing the middlemen. Some do it by state. The left and professional charities HATE it, because they’re not getting their cut.

Well, my son and daughter-in-law went ahead and opened accounts for their kids, though they were not quite convinced about the random donations that would just appear. Fortunately, my son has a lifetime of experience that, when I am insistent, even if it seems improbable, I almost always have my facts straight. He called me excitedly last week to tell me that someone had already added $250 to each of the kids’ accounts – that I was right on the money, so to speak. I looked it up and found it was the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (of Dell Computers).  It made an incredible  $6.25 billion dollar donation to give every kid who has an account an extra $250 – and every dime of it went to kids, no 10 percent for processing  or even a penny to the various middlemen. Donald Trump has made it right tough for leftist compassion-mongers to skim money off the top of charitable giving.

At first, my son said it was hard to sign up. I told him that was strange, because I had told an Idaho woman about it a few days earlier and she had her kids’ accounts going the next day. The next day Chaz called me back and said his mistake was not downloading the app. He said once he did it from the app, it was easy as could be.

If you have kids or grandkids under 18, you should get on it. This is the coolest and best program to build a nest egg for them I have seen in my lifetime. Man, I wish we had had something like this when my kids were little. And I reckon next time I need to replace my laptop, it’ll have to be a Dell. (Unless, of course, Mr. Hewlett, Mr. Packard. Or Mr. Apple wants to up the ante with my grandkids )

I thoroughly enjoyed my presentation at the Symposium on Transforming Culture at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas last weekend. In the end, I decided to work from my outline rather than give the fully formal text. After years of almost constant public speaking (okay, fine, decades) I prefer a spontaneous approach from an outline rather than a fully formal speech. I’m okay with a formal speech on the radio or with a teleprompter. Shoot, at my first radio station, I was considered the best ā€œcold readā€ in the place. (In broadcast, cold reading is the ability to read a piece for the first time out loud and make it sound natural).

The great thing about working spontaneously from an outline is that you actually interact with the audience in a sort of tacit dialogue. Yes, you’re the only one speaking, but you can see – and more importantly, feel – what the audience is thinking and feeling. When I get on a roll, I can feel when the crowd clicks with me. It’s not any sort of mind-meld, more like a harmonious chord which nourishes itself as the ideas and the emotion processes between the crowd and the speaker, becoming more than the sum of its parts, at least so long as it maintains harmony as it grows.

Benedictine has asked us to submit formal papers from our presentations. It will publish them in a review of the symposium. That suits me just fine. My formal paper will just be the same as the column I publish here taken from my presentation. The title, again, is In God’s Own Image.

I have long known that demons are opportunistic. They look for entry points where we short circuit our critical faculties by suspending reasonable disbelief or letting the precision of our minds fade to a blurry haze.  A friend of mine often says, almost as a mantra, that all bad thinking is the result of bad philosophy. (The friend is eschatologist Desmond Birch, also a friend of many of yours). While I don’t entirely agree, it is a staggeringly powerful insight. Bad thinking is largely the result of philosophical slovenliness.

This fuzziness has HUGE consequences. The failure to provide (or even understand) sound sanitation practices was the platform upon which all the great plagues that afflicted mankind were built.

The Lindsay Clancy fiasco and her unhinged supporters are a perfect example of the opportunism of demonic entities. They have used slovenly thinking to infect a substantial cohort of people, certain types of angry women, in particular.  Even that frightening cohort is just a subset of a much larger faction of atheist, materialistic, incoherent rebels. They call themselves compassionate as they revel in the harm and murder of people who don’t agree with them. They call rationality fascism even as they use the coercive tools of fascism to impose their fuzzy, unfocused will. Incapable of thinking clearly or arguing coherently, they have adopted the ultimate heckler’s veto of raw and murderous brute force – and call it righteousness. It has become almost a clichĆ© to note that for all their self-righteousness, these people are almost uniformly angry, miserable, and brutish.

I know their pain is real. They have given themselves over to be flogged by the satan and his minions – and have allowed these demons to falsely convince them that it is those who have not given themselves over to satan who are the source of their pain. It becomes a cancer of the heart and soul, feeding on its own dysfunction and giving the demons greater sway over both individual souls and the culture at large.

My friend, Susan Skinner, author of the Veil of Veronica Blog, is convinced that the evil spirits of Jezebel and Molech are running rampant in our culture. I concur. I first met Susan when we discovered that both of us, on Dec. 20, 2014, had had a vision of demons spewing out upon the earth like lava from a volcano, intent on ensnaring as many as they could before their time was up, with a special focus on inflaming the vanity of the pious to ensnare them.

Twelve years later, the good news is that their time is almost up, which is probably why they are so intensely frenetic. The bad news is that they have ensnared many, with yet more to come. I spent a lot of time the last couple of weeks praying that these demons, these accusers of, these enemies of, mankind be bound, that the afflicted may begin to be delivered from the chains of their vicious and frenzied torment. A wounded and cornered animal is dangerous, but the torment it suffers is also real and intense.

The most consequential Novena for me every year is the dual, overlapping Novenas to the Immaculate Conception and to Our Lady of Tepeyac (commonly called Guadalupe). I am planning to talk to our Prayer Team at CORAC, and to several Priests and Religious I admire and respect, to put together a taped daily Novena Prayer Reflection to bind and banish the spirits of Jezebel and Molech…and all the evil spirits who prowl the earth like lions seeking whom they might devour. We must, indeed, fight the depravities of our time, but without deep prayer for deliverance of the afflicted (including ourselves) our fight will be in vain.

This Sunday, September 20, we will hold a virtual retreat, a global ZOOM Meeting – and you are all invited. It is the 26th Anniversary of what may have been the most consequential day of my life up until now. I have been emphasizing to people that we must learn to walk on water, for that is the only way to get to the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart. Of course, there is no way to walk on water except through abandonment to Christ, in complete trust and confidence. The retreat will begin at 5 pm ET, 4 CT, 3 MT, and 2 PT. So you’ll have plenty of time to get to Mass, have Sunday dinner, kick back and relax. We will focus on some priorities going forward and your comments and questions will be moderated by our Executive Director, Michael Murray (better known hereabouts as MP).

I strongly urge you to read the most recent edition of the CORAC Newsletter. In my column, I gave an intimate episode from my personal history to illustrate what is required of us in discernment in these times.

I said earlier that the demons are opportunistic. They look for the holes in our faith, the flaws in our daily lives. They especially look for vanity and self-righteousness.

Scripture constitutes public revelation – and the Church is the only authorized interpreter. So Scripture and  the Magisterium of the Church are our reliable guides.

Private revelation – apparitions, visions, prophetic words, etc. – do not add to the fullness of revelation contained in Scripture and the Magisterium, but may be a useful tool in successfully navigating a particular time in Salvation History.

In many circles, there is a great hunger and eagerness for private revelation. Many people will take at face value the most specious nonsense if it is purported to be a message from God. Here are a couple of things you need to know:

Most purported private revelation is not revelation at all. It is just some mouthy crank trying to augment his private opinion by claiming it is from God. Of the rare private revelation that is of supernatural origin, more comes from the devil in an effort to deceive than from God. And the devil makes a right frothy presentation, with plenty of whistles, bells, fireworks and drama. The Lord usually comes in a small, gentle, whisper (1 Kings 19).

People often ask me why I do not speak more plainly and openly about what I am shown. It is because I know how clever and seductive the devil is. If you knew what lengths and pains I go to to vet and confirm everything I am given before I will publicly speak of it, you would give thanks that you do not have to deal with such things. I have a horror of unintentionally misleading people because I was fooled for a time – and I know just how easy it is to be fooled by the devil, who is constantly prowling, looking to exploit the unguarded seam in your armor. I have complete confidence in God – and little in my own prowess. And I will be held to account by God for everything I say and that I do.

A harder truth is that, even in canonized saints, not every word that falls from their mouths is necessarily accurate. Even if they have seen truly, they often interpret poorly. A nihil obstat does NOT guarantee the accuracy of a text, only that it does not contradict faith and morals. I always cringe when someone says, with confidence, that, ā€œMary said thatā€¦ā€ and then cites some saying attributed to Our Lady from the vision of a saint as absolute fact. It is far worse when they cite a random, unvetted, purported mystic – who might just be a devil wearing a pious skinsuit.

You must know that the opportunistic demons are fully using this mania in some circles for private revelation to enthrall and deceive the faithful. If you know what every internet rando has to say about what God told them and do not have a solid foundation in Scripture, Church history, and formal doctrine, you have lost the narrative – if you ever had it. You are, to the devil, as a crippled elk is to a wolf. Stop bandaging yourself with unvetted private revelation until you have the firm foundation of Scripture and Church teaching with which to discern what is useful and what is not.

And yes, that includes what I say. What any of us say to each other may be useful, but without a firm foundation in Scripture and the Magisterium, you have launched into shallow, rocky waters without a navigational map. It would be hard enough to traverse it on your own without the demons constantly trying to lure you into the rocks. Your faith will lift you up, but it must be nourished by Scripture and the Magisterium.

Put on the full armor of God!

Over a decade ago I casually wrote a phrase that I have come to think was one of the most inspired in my life. I will close with it.

ā€œAs you look at your life, you cannot measure it by the books published, the soup kitchens worked, the refuges built – though if you can do those things, they are good. Rather, you must judge it from the perspective of the hope you inspired, the peace you spread, the joy you engendered, the love you kindled – for these are the sure marks of the Kingdom and of God. All else is detail.ā€

  3. I have only peripherally followed the Lindsay Clancy situation. I’ve been amazed and appalled almost more by the treatment of the juror and the complete loss of any sense of what would happen if she were to have been declared innocent by a bunch of women jurors. Catastrophic for feminism as it would be because entirely mis-focused.

The key item that is not being looked at and which very much alters the entire debate is that she was on not just one but many psychiatric meds.

At some point we are all going to have to wake up to the fact (not theory) that the entire alteration of psychiatry to a medical paradigm with largely untested and inadequately vetted psychiatric drugs that are almost impossible to get off of is one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever perpetrated.

Some patients do benefit from these, but at least 20% of those who take these drugs develop loss of affect, meaning that they lose their ability to feel emotion. Almost all shooters, starting with Columbine, are on or are believed to be on these drugs. From a biochemical point of view, they either become suicidal because the loss of emotion makes life not worth living, or they become seekers for more and more intense emotion as their ability to feel emotion ebbs away. And murder is one of the most intense experiences.

In many ways they resemble natural psychopaths: they can plan extreme crimes and carry them out without remorse and show little emotion in the aftermath. In other respects they resemble demon-ridden “God told me to kill people” actors looking for destruction just to feel *something* again or assuage the demanding voices in their head.

Lindsay Clancy was on these drugs and appears to have become a biochemical psychopath or open to demonic influence. She really was not in her right mind and likely is innocent, an innocent victim of a Pharmaceutical industry that knowingly sells these drugs for money and destruction. The people who should have been the defendants in that trial are the pharmaceutical executives and government agents which allow these drugs to be sold without adequate selection testing and monitoring and for setting up mass shooters and killers who can be used by the legacy media to push gun control and other negative issues that are meant to spread destructive influence throughout our society.

As far as I can tell, a mistrial was the best outcome, because the real killers were not in the docket, only the hacked robot they created and tormented. For the public and the government to go after her again without understanding these drugs and then widening the debate or the trial to include those truly at fault will serve nobody except those wishing division and harm to our society.

    1. Lots to think about, Steve and Briana. For sure and certain we, collectively, make a mess of our lives when we live without God at our center. Thanks be to Him that we only can do that little right before us because the need for change is too much for humanity to accomplish on its own. It’s absolutely massive in scope.

  4. Charlie I had post partum psychosis after my 7th child. I used to have terrible and frightening images of putting my baby in the oven.

I cannot begin to explain how scary it was.

I told my Dr and he said it would go away.

It did, eventually, but while it was going on it was very difficult to navigate. I used to have my oldest hold the baby while I cooked because I was so afraid of losing my grip on reality.

I’m not a murderer. And if I had actually broken with reality I can’t imagine what people would think. But I understand which is why I don’t support her, and know murder is murder- but also know how tenuous my own grip on reality was after that last birth ( I blame too many children too fast and lack of sleep, with malnutrition added in). So many women I know have suffered the same as well.

I’m also a psych nurse and was horrified looking at her list of meds. Just horrified. This case ripped the mask off mental health care in this country. We have got to stop drugging people as a matter of course. She was on common treatment.

As a psych nurse I also have seen many people in psychosis, and when we figure out the right cocktail of antipsychotic meds, they come back to themselves and are usually greatly ashamed of who they were when their brains weren’t working. They often have command hallucinations that tell them to do harmful things. But the voices go away with medication: There is a part of your brain that can tell reality from non reality and the idea is that part of the brain starts not being able to tell between the real and unreal.

It’s a horrible suffering and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone.

I understand how right it is for you to strongly warn against people listening to voices.

However I think there’s a difference between people who are seduced by voices like you’re talking about and drugged up post partum mothers who are losing their grips on reality.

    1. I know an older relative was on too many prescription drugs – most not even psych meds. It all came crashing down at one point and she was hospitalized for three days having terrible and frightening hallucinations. They started over with a much more restrained regimen.

I am very sympathetic to the damage our pharmacological manis is causing us. Yet I can’t help but wonder if that is another seam that makes us vulnerable to infestation. Some of the ugly things that I saw with several older family members and prescription drugs gave me a lifelong aversion to them. At 70, there are some medications I take – mainly for the prostate cancer that may be gone. But I won’t take anything unless I have done some significant independent research on it. It scares me – not only for the ugly physical effects I have seen, but for the potential I see in it to diminish your capacity to reason soundly.

      1. Charlie, I absolutely agree that these drugs and how they are prescribed are avenues for infestation, but so are the illnesses themselves. Ultimately, I had suicide voices in my head from depression caused by inflammation due to four infected wisdom tooth sockets. Nobody knew they could get infected, so I had no idea until 48 years later. One doctor saw the extreme inflammation but couldn’t see in 1978 that it could cause depression. Nobody understood my depression and so gave me almost useless meds. *Most importantly* nobody back then – or now! – sees the possibility of the voices being demonic because God (and thus the devil) has been pushed out of all our conversations and understandings.

How much different would my experience or Briana’s experience have been if God were an accepted part of all health evaluations and thus the possibility of evil could be discussed and resisted properly? Imagine how Clancy’s treatment would have evolved if those treating her immediately recognized the importance of her statements that she was hearing voices commanding harm be done? Th process and the likely outcome would have been totally different. Yet the single most important fact in her life at that point was not recognized, and all hell broke loose, literally. Now Clancy needs to do time but with lenience and get treatment entirely covered by the malpractice insurance of the doctors involved, while her doctors and nurses should be severely disciplined or removed from practice, and the Pharma companies involved exposed and their executives arrested and put on trial with their meds.

We talk about Faith, Family and Freedom, and those are wonderful to focus on. However, it doesn’t really expose to most people the everyday details of conversations and diagnoses and behavior in office and so much more of daily life’s brief moments that are so critical to our destinies. It is said that the Devil’s greatest accomplishment was to persuade us that he doesn’t exist, but really, he got a twofer a while ago when he persuaded us that God either doesn’t exist or isn’t involved in our daily lives, because that persuasion not only took him out of our calculations and experiences but also the single most effective way to recognize and resist him.

Briana, I am dismayed to hear of your own experience. I admire you for your strength of spirit and character in the midst of that severe pressure.

        1. Good insight, Steve. I have been much focused on the everyday consequences of the intentional myopia of the philosophical and scientific materialism set off by the Enlightenment (which I sometimes think of as the launch party for a new philosophical “dark ages.”) Sadly, many genuine believers unconsciously adopt this materialist philosophy in their approach to everyday life and routine analysis. The devil convinced us to partially blind ourselves and we don’t even notice the blind spots. I am trying to come up with a rational method of dealing with this practically. It is tough, because “signs and wonders” enthusiasts get so overeager that they do the devil’s work of convincing ordinary people that only crackpots even consider such things. It has been telling to me how many Priests, who normally avoid such things assiduously, talk to me candidly about spiritual and mystical things. I was first startled by the palpable sense of relief that radiated from them that they could finally discuss such things seriously with someone who was clearly rational.

My dear friend, the late Fr. Regis Scanlon, with great humor encapsulated that phenomenon. We became friends before I became prominent. Many people in the Archdiocese knew we were great friends. Fr. Regis once told me, in the midst of the growing controversy, that he got asked about me five or six times a day. With a great grin, he said he gave them all the same answer: “I don’t know about his prophecies, but he’s not nuts!” he would exclaim with a jaunty flourish.

There is a great hunger among religious authorities to be able to talk about these things with insight and rationality. Of course, many who make claims like mine make matters worth by insisting that they be treated like the Oracle at Delphi and count any skepticism not as skepticism of them or their interpretation, but as skepticism of God.

I think the devil has successfully created a perfect storm blocking serious consideration of the fullness of human experience, tacitly blocking off the spiritual entirely. We must find ways to end the blockade, to lift the satanic siege, to get to right reason. It occupies a lot of my thought these days.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Absolutely, Charlie. However, it may be easier than you think. I find that more and more people are becoming willing simply to acknowledge God or Jesus in casual conversation. If that process, which already exists in many people, can be sped up somehow, there will inevitably be both a greater willingness to expand that style of conversation into more fraught situations and as well, a beginning of a willingness to push by lay people to force doctors and so many others to start acknowledging God and Jesus in *their* conversations and work.

I would presume that God would get on board and help make that happen, even as people say, “We did it ourselves.” Certainly Trump has helped here. Think how he changed so many people’s willingness to say “Merry Christmas!” He is injecting God into many conversations. It just seems like a rising river or tide and may not need to be forced, only exampled.

            Words of the Queen
The Virgin Mary Speaks to Sister Mary of Agreda l.

“My daughter, human nature is imperfect and remiss in practicing virtue, and easily weakens in its exercise; for it continually seeks rest and evades labor with all its might. When the soul listens to and extemporizes with the animal and carnal part of its nature this latter will engross and overcome the forces of reason and of the spirit, and will reduce them to a dangerous and shameful slavery. This disorder is abominable and much to be feared by all ; but God abhors it without comparison more in his ministers and in religious: they, as a matter of course, are supposed to be perfect, and therefore are injured so much the more seriously, if they do not come out victorious in the conflict of the passions. By remissness in battle and by their frequent defeats they live themselves into a paralyzing and self-satisfied conviction of false security, content with the performance of certain easy outward practices of virtue, at the same time imagining (without the least real advancement) that they are moving mountains. The demon then introduces other distractions and temptations, and on account of their small appreciation of the rules and practices of religion, they begin to weaken in all of them, esteem them as light and unimportant matter, and, living on in their false security, come to lose the very perception of true virtue.

I desire that thou, my daughter, guard against this error. Remember, that a voluntary remissness in regard to one imperfection prepares and opens the way for others: these facilitate the commission of venial sins, these again of mortal sins. Thus the descent is from one abyss to another, until the bottom is found in the disregard of all evil. In order to prevent such a misfortune it is necessary to intercept from afar the current of sin, for the practice or ceremony, which seems but small, is an outwork which keeps the enemy at a distance, while the precepts and laws concerning more important matters are the fortress walls of conscience. If the demon can break through and gain the outer defenses, he is in better position to gain the inner ones. If then an opening is made in the bulwarks by the commission of sin, although it may not be a very grievous one, he already has a better opportunity to make an assault on the interior reign of a soul. As the soul finds herself weakened by vicious acts and habits and without strength of grace, she does not resist the attack with fortitude, and the devil, acquiring more and more power over her, begins to subject and oppress her without opposition.

Consider therefore now, my dearest, how great must be thy watchfulness, and how great is the necessity of not falling asleep in the midst of so many dangers. Remember that thou art a religious, a spouse of Christ, a superior, taught and enlightened, favored with so many singular blessings. By these privileges and many others, which thou wilt find connected with them, thou shouldst gage thy solicitude, for thou owest a return and correspondence in all of them to the Lord. Exert thyself to be punctual in the fulfillment of all the rules and practices of religion; let there be no rule, no command, and no exercise of perfection, which ever will seem small to thee; despise or forget none of them; observe them all with rigor, for in the eyes of God all is precious and of great import when practiced according to his pleasure. It is certain, that He finds pleasure in seeing his commands fulfilled, and is offended in seeing them set aside. Therefore in all things consider, that thou hast a Spouse, whom thou must please, a God, whom thou must serve, a Father, whom thou must obey, a Judge, whom thou must fear, and a Mistress, whom thou shouldst imitate and follow.

In order that thou mayest fulfill all this, thou must renew in thy soul the strong resolution not to listen to thy inclinations, not to yield to the negligence and weakness of thy nature; do not omit any practice or exercise on account of its difficulty, as for instance kissing the ground, as thou has been accustomed to do according to the custom of the religious. Both small and great perform with a loving constancy and thus thou wilt be pleasing in the eyes of my Son and myself. In the works of supererogation, after praying for a holy alacrity, ask advice of thy confessor and superior, and perform them with a spirit entirely free of any predilection or self-love, That which they direct, accept and write in thy heart, never resting in its punctual fulfillment. If it is possible to avail thyself of obedience and counsel, never decide for thyself on anything, how good so ever it may appear to thee; for the true will of God is always manifest in holy obedience.”

  5. This article explains so much. I didn’t know she had traces of Ativan – you can clean your house, cook a meal, and not remember- my pharmacology professor did just that and that’s when she stopped with the Ativan – another friend literally cut down a tree with a chainsaw on Ativan so to him it was a dream but his wife was terrified. His wife said he also used to work on the car) but mix that with sub levels of Valium? That causes agitation.
