The Noonday Devil is on the Prowl

I am slow to get into religious disputes with people of good will. If I think them to be in error, I figure God will enlighten them – or me – in His own good time. He may very well have some critical things to teach us during the period of error. I mainly get agitated if someone is following an error I consider to be mortally dangerous. Start talking about the Rapture or the concept of refuges as a place where God will send angels to lead all the righteous to sit in safety while the storm plays out and I will jump in every time. That is because these are deadly dangerous deceptions, calculated to cause otherwise decent people to fall into mortal despair at an existential moment. When they are not raptured or taken by an angel to a place of safety during crisis, people might easily lose all hope and perish to eternity. I will not have that. Thus, I will not abide any discussion of Fr. Michel Rodrigue or John Leary on this site. I have no clue whether they are well-meaning or not…but what they teach is so dangerous I just will not have it. Other than that I am pretty well content to leave people to discern for themselves in their own time.

It chills my heart, though, when people follow frauds that have been fully exposed to be intentional frauds. I saw some favorable comments about fraudulent mystic Maria Divine Mercy on an affiliate site…and wanted to cry. That woman was fully exposed in 2015. She is Mary Carberry (nee McGovern) of Dublin, Ireland. Her “messages” were, from the start, a marketing scheme to separate gullible Catholics from their pocketbooks. She succeeded to the tune of several million dollars, cutting and pasting some authentic prophecies with her own idiosyncratic twists to produce a creep show for Christians that sold quite well. This was well-publicized.

Discernment is a daunting task. You will make mistakes. But if you go following fully exposed frauds without doing any research (which is the ONLY way anyone could still be following Ms. Carberry) you are just begging the devil to take you down and get it over with.

I also get occasional missives touting the messages received by “the Little Pebble,” known in less ethereal circles as William Kamm of New South Wales, Australia. He is a convicted pedophile with convictions going back to the 90’s and facing new charges shortly after having been released on parole. But peddling “messages from God” keeps him going between little girls.

I suspect that most people who claim to have received messages from God are well-intended, if deceived. I deal with them from the standpoint of Isaiah 42:3 (which Jesus also quoted in Matthew 12:20): “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.” Even those who are authentic misinterpret what they have heard or been shown sometimes. But for heaven’s sake (literally), surely we can dismiss the transparent, intentional frauds!

I have always hated repeating my mystical experiences. Part of it is because I am not a messenger, I have a mission – a mission which requires some such visitations. But the reality is that most people, when they say, “God told me…” are just trying to lend divine authority to what is merely their opinion, considered or otherwise. It is a deadly dangerous thing to do if you have any clue what it is you are about. Frankly, I liked it better when nobody knew I claim a divine cheat sheet and many just considered me a genius for my frequent deep insights. After I went public, any errant detail was considered by some as evidence for my dismissal. So why did I speak about these things at all? Because I knew the Storm was coming and if I spoke of it before it was obvious to everyone, it would give credibility to the main message I need to convey: this is NOT the end – and God has work for us to do if we will take it up.

When I speak of mystical things now, it is not an effort to persuade you. Rather, it is to candidly explain the motivations of my interior life in leading this movement of the ordinary man. The fact is that Jesus said a tree will be known by its fruit – and the fruit or lack thereof is all that counts. I was instructed early on to take complete responsibility for all I said, blaming nothing on God – for I was clearly shown that despite my very best efforts, I would err at times, sometimes badly. We hold what treasures we have in earthen vessels.

I look at these things paradoxically. On the one hand I think that almost everyone who says, “God told me…” publicly is just trying to give heft to his own opinions (I do not speak here of people speaking privately in trying to discern what is right). On the other hand, I also think that God speaks to each of us a thousand times a day and our perception is so limited we are lucky if we perceive much of any of it. But whether you believe your instructions come from God or from your own devising, you – and you alone – are responsible to God for what you do. You cannot escape that accountability or abrogate it to anyone else.

And now, the devil is prowling around like a snarling beast, not waiting for night to ensnare people but prancing about in the noonday sun. Some people are enraptured by the prancing, thinking that anyone who claims to hear directly from God must surely have their best interests at heart – and so walk right into the snarling beast’s mouth.

Do you think the devil is clumsy? Do you think he is a dull-witted strategist? Do you think, because he is the father of lies, that palpable lies are the only arrow in his quiver?

Let me tell you a little about the devil. He will tell you a thousand truths just to make you comfortable receiving the one lie he desperately wants you to believe. He will not just use your weakness, your fear, your penchant for sin to lead you into the valley of death. Oh no, he is much more clever than that. He will pervert your love, your compassion, your very desire for righteousness to lead you astray. He will transform himself into an angel of light to deceive you (2 Cor 11:14). I spend a lot of time consoling people after a disaster of their own making who thought they were doing good. Most people are only prepared for Devilry 101 – but the actual devil is the Doctor of Deception.

Just around the turn of the millennium, my angel warned me that the devil was going to send me false visions and, so, to beware. Sure enough, I had some of the most consoling visions of my lifetime – but each subtly denied some truth of the faith. So, I dismissed each I discerned. I was feeling pretty proud of my discernment until my angel appeared to me, clearly irritated, and said, “He is not trying to convince you of what is in the visions. He is trying to convince you that he is clumsy.” The message was that, even though I already knew the devil would use my best instincts to cause me to founder – and so was not prone to believe something just because it was comforting or mirrored what I already suspected – he was still far more clever than that.

I have never been offended by anyone who approaches my claims with skepticism. I get offended when some people lie or maliciously twist what I say, but even then, it comes with the territory. I do expect people to be at least as skeptical of my experiences as I have been most of my life. An authentic mystic is caught in a divine conundrum: he may just be a little nuts – and so could do damage to the people of God, himself becoming a temptation to lead others astray. On the other hand, if it is an authentic call from God and he ignores it, he has defied God. I struggled with that for decades. I finally decided to quit doing the “to be or not to be” routine and go forward “as if” what I was shown was true and needful. But not before having some clear guidelines and guardrails in place, in case I was deceived and for those times when I erred. First and foremost was obedience to lawful authority. Second was to abide no belief that, if followed to its logical conclusion, would destroy the foundation of faith. For example, I believe in Vatican II. I do NOT believe in the noxious “spirit of Vatican II” that many perniciously dissident clerics and commentators have used to promote false and licentious doctrine. But if I were to believe, as with some overly pious cranks, that Vatican II was, itself, a great error, I would have to believe that a solemn council of the Bishops of the world presided over by the Pope had formally taught error. In that case, the faith of the universal Church would have failed and the gates of hell would have prevailed. If that were the case, then Christ would have been wrong in His assurance to us. If He was wrong, He would not be God and our religion would be a fraud. None of that is true – but it would be if the musings of those who peddle it were true. Mouthy pious scolds should consider where their logic ultimately leads before so fatuously attacking the very foundation of faith.

Recently, I dismissed the messages promulgated by a Mission in Texas which is constituted by what I believe to be very good people. But they promulgated those messages in defiance of their Bishop’s lawful direction, believing the messages were too important to be obedient. For crying out loud, this is the very sort of situation I was confronted with at the turn of the millennium when I was given to the satan to be sifted. He showed me things I wanted to believe, things that I thought were urgent. But there are two major things wrong with this kind of thinking: first, believing that you can accomplish good by defying Christ’s clear command of lawful obedience. Second is a complete lack of faith – believing that if you don’t act now God’s will will be thwarted. I believe I have a divinely appointed mission and I focus on it constantly. I also know that if I die tonight, God will accomplish His will.

I don’t care whether anyone believes the mystical stuff I speak about. If I could, I would go back to the way things were before I went public. But the toothpaste is not going to be squeezed back into the tube. I do insist that I be judged by what I do, not by any sort of purported intimacy with God. My message is not that God is close to me, though I pray that is the case. My message is that God is close to each and every one of you, right at hand. Keep His commandments in all things while trying to take the next right step. That is your guide.

But I see signs that the devil has launched his initiative to ensnare the pious by deceiving them into doing his will, thinking it is good. I learned long ago that I would err sometimes. I told you when I first began writing these things that it would be so. I will err again – and when I do I will tell you as soon as I know and will correct my course. Discernment is very hard, particularly when the devil starts churning things up designed to deceive the most pious. You will err, too. Not to worry, God is with you if you take responsibility and confess your errors.

But for heaven’s sake, at least weed out the “mystics” and writers who are transparent, open frauds or who counsel courses that destroy the foundation of faith. God expects us all to stretch out our hand to Him to be healed. Don’t walk blithely into the mouth of the snarling beast.

  1. I appreciate this to the max, Charlie. SO needed right now. I love the way this piece invites us to a deeper examination of what we’re thinking and saying as well as who we’re following and where that one is taking us. Captivating material for contemplation and meditation.

    1. You know, Beckita, in late 2010 or early 2011 (I know it was before I went on my pilgrimage) one of my Priests stumbled onto her early writings. He sent it to me to get my take (my Priests – and now other Priests – do that sometimes). I read it and told him to stay away from it: that this was a diabolical effort to pull people away from the faith and a complete fraud. I’m pleased and that – and was more pleased when she was completely exposed as a malignant fraud a few years later.

      1. Totally evil, Charlie. Some people who think they are to make public alleged messages is one category of problematic, but the work of MDM is intentionally deceptive for material gain. Diabolic indeed.

    I have ordered “When the Lion Roars” by Msgnr. Rossetti. It insists that being a mystic is not fearful and I know that if I think God has given me a “Word” I will go to someone I trust for discernment. I won’t jump off a cliff or shout messages because God’s Word is for me, personally.

    Anyway, updates on the book and on my health should be forthcoming. Please keep praying for me as results from tests have not returned.

      1. Beckita, I will take your words to heart! ~ I have started on a pain-killer and I’m feeling MUCH better. I’m sure taking the time to ponder is now on my agenda. Not so much sleeping. ~ We have still not received any test results from the ultrasound of the kidneys and the echocardiogram will be on Wednesday. ~ Please, everyone, continue to pray for my doctors. ~ And, BTW, my youngest sister is now hospitalized in Texas with heart…Tests? I’m doing my best to not be distressed by this. Praying for her doctors.

  4. If I’ve learned anything when reading about the lives of the saints, it’s that there is a great reluctance to reveal supernatural visions or experiences to the public eye. I think they don’t want to draw attention to themselves or be seen as anything more than what they really are. People almost automatically associate visions with holiness. It’s inevitable that people would never look at them the same way, and it would put their lives under a microscope. Or it might have the opposite effect, and others might think such a person was crazy.

    One evening we had a priest over for dinner and he confided to us that three separate people within his parish had visions of Jesus in the Eucharist. He didn’t say who they were and we certainly didn’t ask. But it was naturally understood that those who received these graces wanted them kept private—or at least to remain anonymous. Unless a supernatural occurrence is explicitly meant to offer a benefit or convey a message beyond the original point of contact, one has to weigh whether or not revealing such things is beneficial or not for others to hear.

    I think that authentic supernatural occurrences or mystical experiences are far more common than we think. People just tend to keep them private.

      This issue is the @2020 Second Printing ~~ The very last chapter is of Fr. Michael Rodrigue which, in the footnotes states “He remains a priest in good standing, obedient to the Church, and his new Fraternity is officially recognized within the Catholic Church.”

      At this time (2nd printing) his writings have not been condemned by the Church, “which has not made an ecclesial investigation.” May I assume that the investigation HAS occurred and that this last section be ignored?

Charlie, I’ve read and have heard Fr rodrigue and as much as I wanted to believe him -simply because he is a Frenchman like me😂 and I am also of Canadian descent- yes stupid reason- but when I heard him talk about the Antichrist being here I totally lost interest because I truly believe in what you have told us, Charlie, and also because I totally believe in what Desmond A. birch has also taught us through his book, Trial Tribulation and Triumph before during and after Antichrist!

          It is not the end of the world and time for the Antichrist just yet!!! So much more has to happen before the satan can come into play!

          It makes no sense at all that the Antichrist will appear before the era of peace-although I do agree with you that what is going on is a good dress rehearsal!!! 😂😂😂

          As a result of all I have conveyed in the first paragraph , I felt it was futile to continue to read or listen to anything more that Fr. Rodrigue had to say!

  7. Charlie- I have noticed on X (Twitter) what seems like a large wave of anti-Catholic vitriol from users labeling themselves as “Reformed” or “Scripture Only” Christians. They seem to be especially active on recent converts to Catholicism.

    I know one of the mantras of this site and of CORAC is to defend the Faith and defend the faithful. I have spent good time cracking back at these “saved” folks in defense of our Faith, but find myself sinking into snarky, sarcastic and even insulting language. On more than one occasion, I have typed a reply, admired my laser-sharp wit and then deleted it because I was more interested in the ensuing “likes” than actually accomplishing something for Jesus or God.

    It has come up more than once in Confession, but I’m not sure where the line is drawn between defending and offending. Do you have any guidance for me on this? I know you are active on X.

    1. Ah well, Jayman, I can be snarky as can be sometimes. If I see an opportunity to win someone over, I usually take it. If someone is being a pompous ass, I sometimes give a reasonable reply in hopes of winning over those who will read the initial post and my reply. But sometimes snark is the only answer I give. You do the best you can according to your authentic personality. Part of me thinks that if people don’t want none, they shouldn’t start none. Another part thinks that if they want to get into a battle of wits with me, they should have come better-armed. I think in terms of the overall sweep of my comments rather than about any individual post…and my thought is always whether I am generally heartening the faithful or not. Sometimes snark accomplishes that best.

      Long ago, doing politics, I routinely would ask regional coordinators (RC)for a critique after I did a talk. Once, in Decatur, Illinois, at the home of an RC after a talk with his volunteers, he told me, “Charlie, you’ve got to dial it down a bit. You come off as too intellectual.” His wife was preparing dinner in the other room and jumped in to exclaim, “Charlie’s no intellectual. He’s plain as dirt.” Then she got a sly grin and said, “No, you’re right. He is an intellectual – but he’s our intellectual,,,and he’s smarter than any they’ve got.”

      We all have strengths and weaknesses. It is good to use our strengths to help the cause and to hearten those around us, but not to bully our allies. So, cast your bread upon the waters and pray for the best.

      They will know we are Christian by our love.

      If people of faith you are debating are ignorant of it, they are more like children than adults. Jesus told the Apostles before Pentecost that they could not handle more of what He had to say but to wait on the Holy Spirit who would lead them to these truths. Pray to the Holy Spirit to enlighten yourself (and them) before posting a comment. Faith is supposed to be “attractive” not a burden even though His word is sharper then any two-edged sword! If you are given words by Him, He will not return void and you will be a profitable servant of His. But remember this: “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” (Luke 17:10).

    4. Hello sir . . . My first impulse is always snarkiness. Fortunately, my better self instantly takes over because I know that any comment with even a hint of snarkiness, ridicule or any kind of negative connotation will not be helpful.

      This played out with me about 1 hour ago when I was reading through comments on a post with a picture of the Pieta captioned “It all began with a mother” (obviously in reference to Mother’s Day). You might imagine the myriad negative comments which this provoked.

      I responded to only one: “Jesus called his mother woman as if she wasn’t that important just another person”. My response: “Would you like to learn from other parts of Scripture about the significance of Jesus calling her woman?” I have yet to get a reply.

      My second inclination is almost always to ask a question, usually with an idea to share truth. Unfortunately, I rarely get a reply.

  10. Charlie, I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said about Maria Divine Mercy. 

    This is my story about Maria Divine Mercy:  One day last year I was asked by a very pious woman in our parish to join her and some of her friends for a prayer meeting at her house on a Sunday afternoon.  So my husband and I went.  At the prayer meeting, she took out some pamphlets with prayers that I never heard of, “The Book of Truth and the Seal of the Living God…prayers by Maria Divine Mercy.”  Well, the six of us there at her house prayed these prayers of this person, Maria Divine Mercy.  These prayers in this Seal of the Living God book are interspersed with the Our Father, decades of the Rosary, etc.  In other words, traditional Catholic prayers.  I came away feeling very uneasy about these prayers as I did not understand why we didn’t just pray the Rosary together without this person’s prayers (MDM) intermixed with the decades.  Our hostess was very head-strong about these MDM prayers.  She wanted to make this “MDM prayer meeting” a regular thing for every Sunday afternoon. She was insistent that these prayers were necessary for the times we are living in.

    But then I went home and immediately did research on Maria Divine Mercy.  I found out she is a fraud.  The whole “Book of Truth, Seal of the Living God” is a fraud. This truth is not hard to find.  After my research, I told our hostess that Maria Divine Mercy is a fraud and that my husband and I would not be participating in her prayer meeting because I did not feel comfortable praying the prayers created by a fraud.  Well, it didn’t matter to our hostess that MDM is a fraud.  Our hostess was still insistent that the prayers were still “good and should be prayed in these times.”  I offered to share the research about this fraud with her, but she never has asked me to share it with her.  She still prays these MDM prayers with the other three members after Mass in the church.

    And just recently, like a month ago, our hostess couldn’t wait to tell me that the Seal of the Living God prayers has received the imprimatur.  Charlie, how can this be?  Is this even true?  And if it is true, doesn’t this create confusion about this whole fraud by lending credibility to it by adding the imprimatur to the prayers? 

    (I have searched the internet and I can’t find anywhere that the imprimatur has been added to these prayers so I am not sure this is true. So any help finding this information would be greatly appreciated.)

      This is the devil’s game through and through. Those who persist in playing with our Mother’s adversary are in great danger. All we can do is name it when confronted with the invitation to drink this poison, pray for all involved and steer clear of any other engagement with these folks who double down, double down, double down… Some things God must tend to directly, and for this, the Battle Hymn of the Republic comes to mind. It makes me tremble to think of being at the end of His terrible swift sword:
      Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
      He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
      He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword
      His truth is marching on

      1. Thanks for this great investigative work, Beckita. And I can only say that I’m profoundly sad that this egregious “MDM” scam originated in my own country 😔

        Dear God, we have enough problems already here, which mirror those in the US in many ways e.g.

        grossly irresponsible “government” (deliberate non-use of capital) dominated by woke and neo-bolshie activists, flooding the country with “immigrants” and “refugees” and libelling any opposition as “far right” etc. etc.;

        a corrupt and compliant lying media, the “court eunuchs” as Mary Steyn says, totally in the pocket of the regime but preening themselves on their “objectivity”;

        a supine Church leadership, often too willing to mouth all the pieties of the zeitgeist and become, in effect, a sort of State Church…

        One could go on. And on. But – what are we doing about all this?

        Well, just 2 months ago, in the two utterly unnecessary referenda on the Constitution designed by the woke excuse for a gubbamint to further weaken the family/women (i.e. real women) and advance their foul agenda, the People finally said “NO!!” and handed them such a resounding defeat on both issues that they’re still reeling back in their rat-holes. They now see the writing, writ very large, on the wall in terms of the national elections which must take place early next year, and know that if the genuine anger manifested in the recent overwhelming referenda result is maintained then they’re dead meat (already rancid, at that).

        There are also large protests against the grossly irresponsible immigration, which of course are either not reported on or lied about in the lügenpresse. We also have local elections next month which should result in another good kicking for them – combined with elections to the laughably entitled European Parliament (🤮) but who cares about that puppet-show. And we also have our Rally for Life in early July, which should get a larger turnout this tear as many, sadly “neutral” on the issue, will nevertheless want to come along as another protest against the regime.

          1. yes, I saw about the Miraculous Medals in one of the links CrewDog circulated above. I wasn’t aware of it happening at all but… good!

            Will certainly keep y’all here in prayer during the Pilgrimage. The daily itineraries are so long (“all the next right steps…” Love it! 😁) that each Chapter gets to recite the entire Rosary, all the Mysteries, over the day. Not to mention the hymns, readings etc. And secular songs too. Next year, D.V., we should be back in the restored Notre Dame (de Paris – Chartres is Notre Dame also) for the start. Anyway, that’ll take care of itself – enough to do for this year as it is!

    2. Alas, it is a sorrowful thing that some people crave the form of piety without the substance. Beckita responded about imprimatur well, but know that the frauds always manufacture some phony imprimatur or approval to confuse as many as they can.

      I have never gotten nor sought an imprimatur for the public prayers I have written. Most folks know I am under obedience and so it is not needful – and could be harmful – to try to get my superiors to commit themselves to approve my work. It is sufficient for both of us (for right now) that they don’t condemn it.

      Given the nature of what I do, I sometimes color outside the lines despite myself. When I do, the Archdiocese is in contact with me – and I make the appropriate corrections. I carry my water under my responsibility and they do the same.

      But while they do raise questions when something I have said or done is not clear, they have been kind and just enough to put out a letter I could use when some cranks kept pushing that I was condemned, affirming that I am a Catholic in good standing in the Archdiocese of Denver. Most things can be handled privately easily because everyone involved is of good will and each takes full responsibility for their duty.

    And, Charlie, thank you for your explanation on your public prayers and the absence of the Imprimatur on them. Perfectly understandable and very well explained.

Beckita and Charlie, I have spent my morning going down the rabbit hole of The Little Pebble website, Mr. Kamm and his abhorrent history, and fake Bishop Broussard that now apparently runs The Little Pebble website who gave out the fake Imprimatur on the Maria Divine Mercy prayers. I had no idea. And this website promotes the Luz de Maria messages that our pious hostess (in my story) also promotes. Again, I had no idea. I didn’t know this Pebble website existed before today. Thank you for helping me seek and discern the truth.

    Charlie, this all brings home your message that we need to pray and discern especially now that the storm is upon us. The devil is prowling.

  14. I have read a number of the John Leary messages. I am utterly baffled that any thinking person could believe such messages come from Jesus. His words are almost entirely this-worldly, secular commentary on current events, with a heavy emphasis on the politics of the US Congress. That any prayerful person could believe such words are from Christ is an impenetrable mystery to me.

    1. It was the same thing with the old Locutions to the World site that collapsed in 2015. It reduced Mary to the role of news commentator on the events of the day. I had some people telling me I should be more like the woman running that site. Sheesh! I told them the woman running it might be sincere, but was completely deluded…that it was not Mary she was talking to. (When I was feeling particularly puckish I told them it might be Meryl Streep playing Mary, but it most assuredly was NOT our Blessed Mother.)

From the defense of the faith, self admired laser sharp wit, getting snarky and sarcastic to wondering if it was harming me more than converting the “saved” commenter, I’ve been there done that too. I often delete the X app to get away from all the aggression, assaults and intended accusations.
    Yea, yea, yea, I think of the “saved” one, you speak without knowledge, let Jesu take care of you. Defending the BVM, the Rosary, 7 Sacrament and the Eucharist sets me off in defense by using biblical references out of Jesus’s mouth. Prods often belittle the BVM. I rely on the Marriage Feast of Cana. For the Prod Jesus angrily replies to her request. For me it’s intimate banter, a playful tease between mother and son who know each other well. She knew full well of what she was asking Him. He knew full well He couldn’t refuse Her request. She doesn’t even wait for His answer. She just turns to the waiter and tells him to do whatever Jesus tells him to do. I love her earthly practicality here too.
    Anyway, say a little prayer before you answer, be positive and delete X to give yourself respite from the chaos ever so often. Give it over to Him to take care of those attacking souls.
