I had a different column ready to queue up today, but last night this idea hit me powerfully…
Of late, I have been bombarded with messages from atheists saying stupid things like, “I wouldn’t follow a God who would kill His own son,” or “A God who would let children suffer is a monster and I will not believe.” Those are a couple of the milder epithets. It got me thinking that I hear a lot of formulations even authentic Christians make that miss the point of the nature of the Trinity; the Incarnation; and the suffering, death, and Resurrection of Christ. As we prepare to go into the fulness of the Storm, we need to be more precise.
First, it is altogether fitting and proper to call Christ, “the Son of God.” It would, however, be equally fitting and proper to call the Father, “the Father of God,” just as it is fitting and proper to call the Holy Spirit, “the active Spirit of God.” It is a mystery to understand the Trinity, one God in three distinct persons. But it is helpful for our understanding of what happened if we contemplate the life and mission of Christ in that context.
After the fall of Adam, God put His plan for the reconciliation and salvation of man into motion. He decided that He would come, Himself, taking on our humanity. That task fell to the Eternal Son. By truly taking on our humanity, Christ became a member of the family of man.
He had to do this in a manner that fully preserved our free will if He would have us be His children, rather than merely pets. Free will opens up the possibility of evil. It also bestows moral agency, which is a big part of how we are made in God’s own image and likeness. Since He could not revoke free will without making us pets, rather than potential heirs of His Kingdom, God chose to live solidarity with the least of us in taking on our humanity. He came and was counted among the lowly and powerless. He suffered and was persecuted for righteousness’ sake. It was not so He would know our condition; He already knew. It was, rather, so we would know He stood with us, in both our joys and our sorrows.
His mission was to conquer death, for in doing that He gave us an invitation to become members of the family of God. But in order to accomplish it, He must first die. Having joined our family by taking on our true humanity He invited us, His brothers, to join His Divine Family by conquering death through Resurrection. He lived the mission He chose perfectly. But He is not the relentless pacifist some would like to make of Him. In Luke 22, while preparing His disciples for His departure, the Lord tells them that he who has no sword should sell his cloak to buy one.
Contrary to what some inane folks like to opine, we are NOT all God’s children. John 1:12 says that “…to all who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God.” He gave us power to become children of God. That means all are welcome in Christ’s Church, but only on His terms, not on theirs.
For all his brilliance, the satan is a linear thinker who, like a crow, is easily seduced by shiny things. Those Christians who complain that they wish Christ would have spoken more plainly and directly miss the point. If you enter the Scriptures seeking what is true, the Lord will lead you into wisdom, progressively unveiling His mysteries. If, instead, you go looking for the loopholes, the devil has already got hold of you.
Throughout all of eternity, the devil could never have imagined the way God would actually accomplish our reclamation. He is blinded by his malignant hatred of mankind and his linear thinking. His hatred includes those fools who think to make themselves his lieutenants and allies on earth. The satan knows that the only kingdom he will ever have is on this earth – and only so long as time endures. The only purpose of his kingdom is to torment humanity and seduce as many men as possible to the same oblivion he will be consigned to at the end of the age. All who reject God will be isolated in darkness, living the torment of their own disorder and malice.
Shallow thinkers who want to play smart on the cheap think God a cruel master who delights in punishing men. To the contrary, God holds the only spring of water in the entire universe – and invites men to drink freely from it. Those who refuse to drink His water wither away into torment. They consign themselves to hell because they refuse to drink what He freely offers. Sin is, objectively, damaging. Like a drug, it progressively blinds us to its deadly effects even as it anesthetizes us with a fleeting pleasure. It draws us away from God and the cool relief of his living fountain.
A whole generation has deceived itself that we are the titans, that it is by our mighty power and prowess that we will create a heaven on earth. And we sink more deeply into the hell we have actually created. The satan is often called the “accuser of mankind.” The deceived generation has redefined morality. Instead of morality being the good you do in accordance with God’s law, they think morality means relentlessly seeking out the splinter in everyone else’s eyes and self-righteously condemning it. A shroud of misery wraps itself around us ever more completely.
It is no accident that, even as violent storms have decreased over the last few decades in their absolute numbers, they have increasingly hit populated areas. God is trying to remind us that it is He who is master of the winds and waves – and the climate. We foolishly demanded He butt out and leave us to our own affairs – and so, He has for a time. The flooding in China, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ stadium sitting underwater, the catastrophic fires in Maui and across the American west, borne by our foolish incompetence and pride, are a call to repentance and humility. Woe to those who will not heed the call and double down on their own prideful dreams of supremacy.
Those who think themselves the titans develop a peculiar form of myopia, believing that good and evil only apply to this brief sojourn on earth. They have forgotten – or never known – that this life is merely our prelude to eternity. As it is written in Romans 2, the Lord will render unto each of us according to our works – and charity covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). The Lord speaks not of charity as the world does, but of that largeness of spirit that is rigorous with itself and generous to others, even to the point of great sacrifice. We choose our eternity. Just as a man’s life on earth does not begin until he has died to the womb, so the fullness of our life does not begin until we have died to this world.
Godless barbarians have seized the reins of power in the world. They use the language of charity to justify their atrocities and brutal control. It is a perverse form of godliness that altogether denies the power of the one, true God. The truth is not in them. All they have to offer is misery, mutilation and death. We must come out from among them to form communities of light and life, communities that will be the building blocks of a true new world order, under God. To do that well, we must contemplate deeply on the nature of Christ and the good He calls us to. Use your anger, but never let it use you. If the sum total of your righteousness is to oppose the depravities of the Godless barbarians, you are in grave danger of simply replacing their depravities with equal and opposite ones of your own devising.
Let us build the City of God together, knowing that we are not the architects, but simply the workmen.

Our field days have been exemplars of the kind of communities we are building. Joe Gallagher is working with us on the new Reveille series, short documentaries on different events and activities CORAC members are initiating throughout the country and, embryonically, the world. His first broadcast is on the field day we had a few weeks ago in Lone Rock, Wisconsin. When hostess Gerry Farina speaks of the 150 people who were in attendance, she is speaking only of the adults. We had half again as many children. How glorious it was to watch them all laugh and play together! I was chatting with one woman who had a three-year-old daughter in tow. You could see the merry mischief in the little girl’s eyes. As we were talking, the little girl broke off to run to some other kids. Mom called her, but the little girl kept going. The lady broke off the conversation, saying she had to get her daughter. I told her that she could be comforted that if her daughter did escape her watchful eyes for a few minutes, this was probably the safest place in America that day for it to happen. She laughed and went off to get her girl.
It was the young parents who were most dazzled, many of them having never experienced a joyful gathering where all could laugh and play together without worrying about offending the joyless scolds in attendance. There were none. These are the communities CORAC members are working together to build. The family is the first Church, an image of the Holy Trinity, itself. Families are the building blocks of a Godly community. Let us build the City of God together.

I also contemplate that Jesus humbled Himself to be incarnated because God redeemed every iota of living a human life, for every iota was tainted in the fall of Adam and Eve, even though we’re still left with difficult consequences such as concupiscence, diseases and suffering. It is a massive comfort, when enduring the weight of a trial, to remember that Christ blunted my suffering by having carried it all to Calvary with Him.
Love your phrase: “entering the Scriptures seeking what is true.” Here’s where we Catholics need to up our engagement with the Lord. While Sola Scriptura is not the full way of coming to know and love Truth, neglect of reading the Scriptures also misses the mark, for one denies himself the opportunity to go deeply into doing his part to reach a closer union with God – a union for which He hungers with each of us on THIS side of the veil. St. Jerome was spot on: “Ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”
Another rich phrase: “Godless barbarians” most leaders truly are.

Your words echo the words of the Servant of God, Maria Esperanza who foretold a time when she saw small communities of faith gathered round the Eucharist. In contemplating this for the last nearly 30 years, I have come to understand how important spiritual communion will be when people may not be able to enter their local churches for a while. I also see how the small communities are not to be exclusive, but to be protective so that members continually Go Forth to evangelize, in word and deed, and continually draw strength and consolation as Holy Spirit overshadows each one to go out, again and again, building the City of God, a true civilization of Love.

That God did not “send his son” but rather CAME as the son, I have never considered before in my 73 years as a very active Roman Catholic. It is so insightful, Charlie. Just WOW! My contemplation for the week.

God the Father did send the Son.. This is important because of what are called the “missions” in the Trinity. See the Catholic Catechism nos. 257 to 267The Son’s incarnation is a divine mission

Mack, can you quote the exact line in which it is said that God the Father sent His Son? The passages you mention speak to some theological principles, such as, *Whenever One Person of the Trinity acts, all Three are present and *Even as the Trinity is One, it is comprised of three Persons with each Person designated to have individual “lead roles’ if you will and while the mission of each Person of the Trinity is noted, this is done so in the context of All Three acting together.

Mack, this gets into the old, “Tastes Great – Less Filling” type of dispute. To argue about one aspect as if it excludes all others is to miss the point. The persons of the Trinity act in complete accord at all times. There is no dispute among them. In general, we know that the Father initiates, the Son acts on that initiative, and the Holy Spirit carries that action throughout the world. It is only by limiting the Persons of the Trinity to the limitations of human relationships that any dispute exists. The Son is the Son of God; the Father is the Father of God. God decided He would come. He came in the Person of the Son. The Father sent the Son because the Father initiates. But to suppose the Son had no choice but to obey the Father’s command misses the very nature of the Trinity, which is to act in full, simultaneous accord at all times. God chose to come. He came in the form of the Son. Because the Father initiates all things, He sent the Son. But this was NOT two separate wills in action. It was ONE will, working in harmony to accomplish the purpose of that single will. Because of the Divine Mystery involved, we have to think analogically about it, but when we confine ourselves to the limitations of the analog, we miss the point and deny ourselves the possibility of crossing the threshold of transcendence. Many people have gotten the mistaken idea that God (thinking solely of the Father) sent His dutiful Son to die…like an earthly father sending his son to war. There is nobility in that, but because of the limitation it imposes on God (actually only in our imagination of God), it is erroneous – and that error opens up the possibility of using that error to depict the Father as a cruel being who forced His Son into death. The only way we can approach the mysteries involved in the faith is through analogy. But it is a mistake of the first order to then substitute the limits of our analogies onto God – and defeats our efforts to draw near to Him rather than facilitates those efforts.

Great Biblical references to the Father sending the Son, Mack. Your original comment conveyed concern about the idea expressed that God did not “‘send his son’ but rather CAME as the son.” What I read from this is Nance’s delight in contemplating that Jesus, indeed, DID COME as the son. I don’t think she meant to negate the sending of Christ by the Father. (Correct me please if I missed that, Nance.) Rather, she is totally taken by the idea of Jesus’ fire and passion to come and rescue us.
I once heard Fr. John Riccardo, with an image of the Rublev icon of the Trinity before him, give a talk which included sharing an old story that interpreted the icon as the three Persons of the Trinity being in discussion about what to do for humanity after Adam’s fall. Fr. Riccardo said it was “the angst in Jesus’ belly” which impelled Him to cry out to the Father: “Send ME!!” I WANT to go down to earth and redeem, restore, and save Our people. So, to your point, Mack: surely Jesus was sent by the Father. And to Nance’s point: just as surely as Jesus was sent, He desired with ALL He was to come down to us.

Modern persons follow Kant in being individualistic and concerned with the autonomy of their subjective interior life. They are, in brief, obsessed with the self. Absolute though the self becomes, modern persons place all their hope in the *triumph of material progress*. We value our spiritual selves absolutely but think only technological advances are of public concern, only material progress can redeem those selves from the curse of nature that is suffering and mortality.
Pope Benedict concludes, the final cause of our hope is eternal life; it is the “resurrection of the dead.” Faith in progress thus appears to be an immanent, distorted, and impossible substitute for the one true hope: eternal life of body and soul in the Kingdom of God.

May I please comment? It’s the choice of words…
God is absolutely the Father of all. One God, One Creator. (No one created himself.)
Whoever and whenever you exclude someone, you’re actually excluding yourself from His Body, the Church. His love falls on the good, the bad and the ugly like rain, and actually never ends even if you reach the depths hell.
Know who’s ultimately, permanently nailed to the cross? Sin and death.
Love did that! Opened a Way to Eternal Life with the Father. ALL are invited.
Now Trinitarian Love is a total outpouring. If it wasn’t Father into the Son, the Son into the Father, and the Holy Spirit united in total OUT pouring, God would not be God. He left nothing for Himself at the risk loosing you.
I learn very slowly. I’m tired of choosing sides within the Catholic Church. Please! We were all put in the same boat! Arms and legs inside! It’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Thank you for your expressions about the Trinity, Friend of Angels. The Holy Trinity is a great and awesome mystery with depths we will not plumb completely either on this side of the veil or when we reach our Heavenly Home. If we knew completely, we’d be God. SO much has been written about the Trinity by many a sage one, from the Church Fathers to the Doctors of the Church, the mystics and beyond.
The sides must be taken, Friend of Angels. In the words of Archangel Gabriel: ALL must choose or perish. To NOT choose Christ and His actual Teachings is to deny Christ. I won’t. I can’t. Not only does my salvation depend on it, I love Him too much to abandon Him like that.
Surely is and will continue to be rough sailing with much up ahead. There is no room in the Barque of Peter for imposters who pretend to speak for the True Magisterium, be that person a consecrated one or a lay person. And it won’t be the faithful ones kicking them out. It is the choice of an imposter to separate himself from God. SO sadly, many are they who now do. Praying always for a return to the Lord for each and every one. Still, WE, each one, must choose Whom it is we follow. God bless you, Friend of Angels.

I’m going to ask a very stupid question– what loopholes? I don’t understand how you go into it looking for loopholes? I’m sorry, I’m obviously not getting it and I want to. More so that I can see it in myself if need be.

No question asked in sincerity is a stupid one, Briana. I see reading Scripture while looking for loopholes as an exercise in trying to weasel out of what God is asking of us or in using the various literary devices, abundantly present in the bible, as a means to intentionally misinterpret what is conveyed. Most often this is done to justify sin and/or all manner of self-determination apart from God. Looking for “loopholes” can also be a means to deny concepts such as the Trinity, because the actual word “Trinity” is not in the Bible. I’ll bet we could brainstorm of list of ways people “use” the Scriptures for their narrow, specific intent rather than for seeking truth in the reading.

Thanks, Beckita. I was a bit under the weather yesterday and slow on the trigger. Of course there are no loopholes, but people try to create them to justify their illicit behavior. God is not mocked, whether you are pretending that only intercourse is sex to justify your lustful ways or that taking something from someone you have a grudge against is “social justice” rather than thievery. I heard some old southerners claim black folks bore the “mark of Cain” to justify their rank bigotry. Again, God is not mocked…but we often make a mockery of ourselves.

St Paul warns against this too.
He constantly admonished and redefined his teaching as many fell into self interpretation by blending all sorts of myths, Jewish law and peganism. They, by their ignorance, malice or greed, tried to win over some in order to have them “follow” them. Paul goes at length in his letters to Timothy giving him instruction to right this disorder.
“Have nothing to do with these people they are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”
(2 Tim. 2-3).

Thank you, Charlie, for your excellent commentary on our triune God and His relationship with the human race. People who think God is cruel only see a small part of the picture of life. We have only one God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Three in one, a mystery we will learn more about when we get to Heaven. That is, if we WANT to get to heaven. That’s a choice God has freely given us.
Regarding suffering, it comes in all shapes and forms and is always heartbreaking. That’s life. We’re not in Heaven yet. And why do we have suffering? Because our first parents were disobedient and chose to do things their own way. Then sin entered the world. It wasn’t supposed to be that way, but again that was a choice Adam and Eve made. Life was changed from that day forward.
We see what great love God has for his creatures by joining our humanity as a poor and humble servant, experiencing hardships, heartaches and persecution. Jesus (God the Son) freely chose to pay the price for our sins. He was crucified, died and was buried. That was our ticket to Heaven. But remember, the choice is ours. God wants our love in return and wants us all to be with Him Heaven. But He will respect your choice.
I hope that anyone who is reluctant to recognize the love and goodness of God will make an effort to learn about Christianity, starting with Jesus and His teachings to His Apostles, and how the church grew from the beginning of time in Old Testament through the New Testament. It’s a long journey.
If you live to be 100, it’s still a short life compared to eternity, and it’s our goal to get to Heaven where there will be no more tears and suffering, only peace love and joy. God wants your love and trust in return. But remember, you don’t have to go to Heaven if you don’t want to. It’s your choice.

So, yes, I was thinking, wow, the Father came as , as Mack thought. What a unique concept. Then in my meditations, I did remember all the references as above. My thoughts now are musing on WOW! The Holy Trinity IS a mystery. Because ALL of the quotes we have all read ARE TRUE.
God is so much MORE than our puny little brains can comprehend. Truly, the more we know/see/understand, the more we realize we do NOT know/see/understand! isn’t God awesome!
