Me Speaking to a CORAC Group at the Flight Museum in Dallas – photo by Sheryl Collmer

By Charlie Johnston

The picture above was taken by Sheryl Collmer while I was speaking at the Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas. Is that a great photo or what? I had no idea I would have such a gorgeous view behind me – but it must have been a little divine prodding that caused me to wear my blue pinstripe suit with a bold red tie.

While in Dallas I went to Mass at my favorite little Church in the Diocese – Mary Immaculate in Farmers Branch. It has very striking stained glass windows at the front, which look like vivid water colors, but have the illusion of depth to them. I noticed that at least 10 % – and maybe as much as 15% – of the people there were NOT wearing masks, yet no one, Priest or parishioner, molested them. The woman, Deirdre Hairston, who a Priest called the police on, is actually the daughter of some very dear friends of mine. I was with them Monday afternoon and then, that evening, at the family birthday dinner for her Father. At dinner I told the family about the tolerant atmosphere at Mary Immaculate – and I credited Deirdre for it. Thank goodness, Bishop Edward Burns, who has given wide latitude to individual Parishes on how to enforce Covid rules, issued a directive telling Priests and Parish employees NOT to create or escalate public altercations on any disputes on such.

Fortunately, Deirdre’s little one-year-old daughter does not seem to have absorbed any trauma from the incident. During the afternoon, she was sitting between Deirdre and me as I was talking to her parents on another couch. Several times, the little girl playfully tapped my hand as I was talking to them and when I looked at her, she was looking away with a sly little smile as if to say, “Who, me?” I chuckled.

I was disappointed that it had happened in the Dallas Diocese. While Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler is the only current Bishop in Texas who I fully trust, Bishop Burns has seemed, to me, to be a reasonable and orthodox man who wants to live the faith well. I have long ranked him second only to Bishop Strickland in Texas. Besides the directive he issued, Deirdre told me he made a conciliatory call to her. I am saddened that no visible corrective action has been taken against the Priest who so badly escalated the whole thing – but I am told the Parish involved is a “woke” haven of committed lefties – and the woke crowd are the most intolerant people since the KKK.

This last year, if I go to Mass and it doesn’t feel like a desecration, I am relieved – and I am not often relieved on the point. After the lovely Mass I attended in Farmers Branch, I was fortunate to attend a few in Tyler, Texas which were wonderful! They even had Holy Water available for all. Hallelujah!

Despite my dismay at how flaccid the American Bishops’ have been at defending the faith and the faithful this last year, I have been both hopeful and confident that the worm is going to turn as they realize that no amount of submission, however craven, is ever going to be enough for the woke pagan left. Yes, I know that some Bishops seem actively to be trying to undermine the faith and the Magisterium. How else to explain Chicago Cardinal Blasé Cupich shutting down Mass at the University of Chicago a few weeks back AND ordering students NOT to attend Mass anywhere else? Or columnist and Jesuit Priest Fr. Thomas Reese’ recent tirade demanding that young people be banned from Traditional Latin Masses – in order that the Latin Mass may be ultimately killed off entirely? Or the Vatican’s Fifth International Conference that includes pro-abortion folks and globalist speakers, but orthodox Catholics need not apply? Or Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin refusing to direct a radio station at Catholic Seton Hall to stop broadcasting music celebrating black mass and other satanic material? Whether these people are deeply misguided or malicious in their efforts to amend the doctrine of Jesus Christ – who is God – there is little that can be done about them. They must repent or perish. But they are a minority, however substantial and influential.

The influence of those Bishops who seek to undermine the faith is exaggerated because of the irresolution of the majority of Bishops who want to do the right thing, but are baffled as to what the most right thing is in these times. It is like the line from the Yeats poem, The Second Coming: “…The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” Don’t scoff. Why would it surprise you that good-hearted Bishops are as baffled and frozen by the strange and rising terrors of these times as ordinary people are? The last thing they need to do is listen to yammering idiots with bluff courage telling them to storm the barricades. That’s the sort of thing the horned Viking Shaman who stormed the Capitol did. It was a stupid, feckless stunt that he was drawn into and, as soon as the heat was on, he turned on his fellow idiots like the big-talking weasel he is. I am glad the good-hearted Bishops do not hearken to the siren cry of such self-destructive, futile gestures. Their job is not to make a pathetic statement doomed to failure, but to protect and defend the faithful.

I have more sympathy for the Bishops’ collective plight than I sometimes let on – at least for those who are not actually trying to undermine the faith. They know that their moral stature is at, perhaps, an all-time low – and it is demoralizing. Nobody thinks of Bing Crosby and “Going My Way” when considering the hierarchy these days. That is due to some factors that are entirely their fault – and some that they have no control over. The flaccid response to the sexual abuse crisis involves more than a few Bishops – but almost all the Bishops and Priests involved come from the wing that seeks to undermine and overturn the faith. Meantime, the Vatican has set the tone of obfuscation and obstruction on the issue – so the goodhearted Bishops are lumped in among those who committed the offenses by the folks in the pews and locked out of dealing effectively with it even to preserve their own reputations – by the Vatican. It often feels as if the Vatican prefers to use the issue as a cudgel with which to smear good-hearted clergy than to hold actual offenders to account. The Dallas Conference in 2002 works hard against the Bishops in these crosshairs, for that was a time when the American Bishops clearly COULD have dealt firmly with these issues, made a bold new commitment to the fundamentals of the faith and set things back on a firm footing. But they did not, preferring to act like the board of directors of Catholicism, Inc., rarely mentioning Christ or the faith at all. That utter and optional failure by a previous generation of Bishops – which allowed disgraced predator Theodore McCarrick to pretend to be a reformer – bankrupted the pool of credibility for this generation of Bishops, even if they wanted real reform and renewal despite the Vatican’s hostility to such ideas.

Many Bishops went beyond (some far beyond) what the states’ dictates on the Covid response were. While I don’t like or agree with it, I somewhat understand it. When people are taken hostage, their first instinctive (though errant) response is to try to show the aggressors that they mean them no harm, as if it is all just a misunderstanding. This is the proper tactic when you hold the power in an imbalanced situation, but not when the power is held over you. When the power is being exercised unjustly over you, such a response only encourages the aggressor that you will be easy to manage – and that they can up the ante whenever they please. The majority of Bishops did it in hopes of preventing any deeper assault against the faith and the faithful. It was an administrative decision, however counterproductive. It was compounded when some of the “woke” political clerics, such as the one who called the police on Deirdre Hairston, thought it was a great way to push the little people around. My big things are to defend the faith, hearten the faithful, and defend the faithful. Though most Bishops acted in hopes of preventing deeper depredations, the scorecard is 0 for 3 on my prime imperatives.

Now many Bishops are about to lift the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation – and to face a more serious financial crisis than they have ever imagined possible. Many Catholics are never coming back, maybe as many as 50 percent. The bulk of those who do come back are those who will be entirely intolerant of callow virtue-signaling and the refusal to get serious about clerical abuse.

The truth is that the best of our Bishops are now living Luke 9:3: “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.” The Lord is stripping the Bishops of prestige, honor, money and worldly influence. He does not do this to punish them, but to empty them of the things they have relied on so that they only rely on Him. And then, in Luke 9:4-5 He gives them real Apostolic authority: “And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” In Matthew 10:15, Jesus adds that, “…it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.” Jesus empties those He calls that He may purify them, fill them with the Holy Spirit, and empower them with full Apostolic authority.

I have long thought that the best Bishops’ fighting spirit and competence are hobbled by the constant deference they are afforded from the moment it becomes clear that they are on track to become a Bishop. Their primary tool of battle are statements written in language that are pale imitations of the classical prose of St. Thomas without the music of insight, ingenuity and passion to give them life and force. They have the smell of faculty lounge battles rather than of the sheep. Stripped of the assets they have become accustomed to, at a time when even the virtue of collegiality often means becoming co-conspirators with clerics who seek to upend the traditional faith and teaching of the apostles, the Bishops of good heart are being made anew, taught to fight again against hostile forces both outside and inside the Church. They are having to learn that they are not primarily administrators, fundraisers, diplomats, or even theologians, but first and foremost Apostles of the Living Christ – and that there is real and exhilarating power in that. Even amidst the transient, frothy waves that dissident clerics are making daily, I see early signs of the elemental power of a rising tide of fidelity among our Bishops. They are starting to live Christ’s command to His Apostles as He prepared to leave them in Luke 22:36: “…let him who has no sword sell his mantle and buy one.”

Let me first give an assessment of where we are. It will not be entirely accurate, but it is of the sort of analysis I do of the political landscape in plotting a political campaign.

Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich was chosen for his ideological affinity with the Vatican – even though he is a mediocrity – and was intended to be Pope Francis’ point man in the Church in America. A mediocrity can survive and even thrive in a top leadership position if he has the wit to know his first order of business is to gather allies and take counsel from them. But Cupich is the sort who likes to thump his chest and throw his weight around. Unfortunately for the Vatican, it led to him offending not only his orthodox colleagues but many who are otherwise ideological allies – not to mention cringeworthy moments such as when he suggested it was silly to worry too much about clerical sexual abuse when we have serious things like climate change to contend with. What most people missed when Washington D.C. Cardinal Wilton Gregory was given the highest profile role in the Church in America was that it was a rebuke to Cupich. Gregory has some real diplomatic chops, even if they are more often used to try to posit to the secular world that the Church means them no harm (and is, thus, unserious about what it believes) than to present the splendor of Christ’s teaching to the world. Gregory is far too smart to alienate ideological allies and even has some real capacity to mollify ideological opponents.

Orthodox Bishops largely steer clear of tangling directly with Gregory while picking fights with Cupich – for even Cupich’s allies would like to see him taken down a few more pegs. You saw this first when the remarkably bold and orthodox Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann challenged Cupich for chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities and prevailing, even though it was nearly unprecedented for a Bishop to challenge a Cardinal for such a spot. It was provocative beyond the bounds of the tightest congeniality for Cupich to run for that spot in the first place: ten years ago, when he was Bishop of Spokane, he forbade his Priests from participating in 40 Days for Life Campaigns. Cupich is, perhaps, the Bishop most hostile to the Church’s pro-life teaching in America. After Joe Biden was seated in the Oval Office, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez (who is also currently presidlent of the USCCB), mildly rebuked Biden for his ardent pro-abortion politics. Cupich loudly criticized Gomez – and then shut up entirely about it. I suspect Cupich shut up because he was warned off by the Vatican. Now orthodox Bishops are cleverly luring Cupich into being their foil in order to clarify and give their position legs. Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila weighed in on denying communion to pro-abortion Catholic politicians. Cupich immediately challenged Aquila, which allowed Aquila to further refine and strengthen his original point. While Ordinaries of smaller Dioceses such as Tyler, Texas Bishop Joseph Strickland and Springfield, Illinois Bishop Thomas Paprocki are at the cutting edge of much orthodox thought, Bishops in larger Sees are getting into fighting form, both because they have to and because Cupich has made himself a useful foil. Now San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has issued a pastoral letter calling it a matter of integrity for any self-proclaimed Catholics who publicly repudiate Church teaching to refrain from taking Communion. When the orthodox and gentlemanly Cordileone first came to San Francisco, he was set up to receive a DUI after an event with the powers that be in San Francisco. Later, they tried to use the Catholic integrity of his schools to try to upend him. I would bet that Cordileone tried to give private counseling to Nancy Pelosi on the subject, to be discrete and spare her dignity – and that she played along to try to chump him. Now Cordileone is not just orthodox; he is a battle-hardened, seasoned veteran of the cultural wars, while still retaining his gentlemanly mien.

The USCCB, itself, is now preparing a direct challenge to the practice of some leftist Catholic politicians calling themselves “devout Catholics” while publicly rejecting Catholic teaching on abortion, family, and sexual issues. Don’t be deceived by Cupich’s appointment to recommend American Bishops at the Vatican. This is a classic case of promoting someone up to a place they can be more carefully watched and distracting them from where they are creating the problem. Make no mistake, Cupich will have substantial influence and can be counted on to make recommendations that are ideologically amenable to the Vatican, but if Cupich and Gregory disagree behind the scenes on an important See, I expect Gregory’s counsel to prevail. Meantime, Cupich’s wading brashly into disputes is an effort on his part to assert that he is still the Pope’s point man in America. It rallies orthodox Bishops while diminishing his influence further – both as useful foil to the orthodox and albatross around the necks of the progressives.

Even so, I think the Vatican made a serious miscalculation in its appointment of Gregory to the key role. Oh yes, he is much more deft than Cupich in preserving collegiality in dealing with his fellow Bishops and relations with the general public. Though it has been 15 years since I had a conversation of any length with him, the Bishop Gregory I knew then worried way too much about what others thought of him, was profoundly eager to be an insider, and overestimated the power of his genuinely formidable diplomatic skills. But for all those lesser enthusiasms, he kept in mind that, in the end, he was called and had solemnly vowed to be an Apostle of the Living Christ. He is currently a Deep State Bishop, but at some point, when it becomes clear that mere human cleverness is not reconciling men to Christ, I expect Cardinal Gregory to choose Christ boldly and baldly at a critical moment, dashing both the hopes of the progressives and the fears of the orthodox that the Church in America might be made into an opponent of Christian doctrine rather than a proclaimer of it.

Cardinal Cupich and the formal assaults of the pagan American left are the best things that have happened to orthodox clerics and Bishops in America. Having been emptied of the ancillary things that gave them comfort and confidence, they are being remade anew in fighting form – and in God’s own image. Right now their steps may, like a toddler, be a bit wobbly, but as the cultural battle over the faith deepens and gets starker I expect them to grow stronger, becoming a formidable fighting force defending the faith, heartening the faithful and defending the faithful. It is licit to disagree with or criticize a Bishop, but avoid condemning one, even in the recesses of your own mind, for God is renewing many – and it is foolish to condemn your critical allies. It is time to step up and act as true allies to those good shepherds who are finding their stride.

The fire from below from all sides has disoriented and, even, paralyzed many good-hearted Bishops. But as they are stripped of everything but their faith in Christ, they are starting to discover they can call down fire from above, the fire of the Holy Spirit that clears all obstacles. Many of the Bishops we now wonder about will end as heroes of the great renewal of the faith that is already in motion.

Our Lenten fundraiser was a bust. Not because people were not willing to help with CORAC, but because of significant interior technological problems. Oh yes, we had malicious bot attacks and such, but the fundamental problems were in the coding. This month, we are making dramatic changes behind the scenes. We will retool the whole donations portal to a new system that is compatible with most browsers, has stronger security against bot and other malicious attacks to shut it down, and works reliably and consistently. I have had lengthy discussions on the subject with the two staff vendors who run the system and choose the outside tools to make this work for all. This is priority one for the organization this month.

We still need the financial help. If you have tried to donate online but the system would not let you in, please send a check to:

The Corps of Renewal and Charity

13940 W. 26th Ave.

Golden, Colorado 80401

By the end of the month, I expect things to be set up to run smoothly and even allow for recurring monthly donations. We’re still less than a year old and have made incredible strides. I will not ignore the growing pains or let them drag on. We have much work ahead of us.

  1. Fantastically coordinated photo! Love the banner of CORAC and the flag behind you. And that reflection of light on the flag is prophetic! May all the evil scheming crumble and give way to the Light of Christ.

What a dynamic collection of ministries at the Mary Immaculate Church!

Intriguing analysis on the Bishops, Charlie. I have never forgotten what you shared about, then, Bishop Gregory back at TNRS and we have prayed for him in our nationwide morning prayer group in The Anointed Life. So true are your poignant insights about them, Charlie, yet, the insights concerning their pruning are both beautiful and hope-filled for the potential to which they hearken. I love the promises of a New Beginning with the splendor of the Church rising from the ashes of so many failures and so much unfaithfulness. All that we have been through, God is using in ways such as how He designed a pearl to be formed. “An irritant works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating is deposited on the irritant until a lustrous pearl is formed.”

May our Pearl of great Price, the Kingdom, come more fully to earth via a renewed hierarchy, CORAC and every good effort to serve the Lord and His people! Veni Sancte Spiritus!

    1. CD;
Not giving financial advice but I’ve been buying silver. We stackers call it ‘phyzz’, as in physical. No paper games! Preserve purchasing power over time as the Dollar devalues. For example, I can buy a gallon of gas for a quarter. The math goes like this: A pre-1965 quarter (90% silver) has .18 ounce of silver. At today’s price, let’s call it $26.75/oz.,would come to $4.82. Ta da!
Note: Gold & silver dollar prices are highly manipulated by the bullion banks & COMEX and have been for a long time. Patience and strong hands are a must.
Posting from my phone so I hope this goes through. 🙏

  3. This is so encouraging to me – despite the problems you identify. The highlight of my weekend was reading Aquila’s (rightly named the Eagle!) letter and response to Cupich. I also beamed after reading Cordileone’s letter. I have been a fan of his for a long time – he was magnificent at out foxing the atheist mayor of San Francisco during the covid lockdown.

I had forgotten that Cupich was once bishop of Spokane. I have family there so I pay attention to news from the area. Did you know that Spokane has the highest population of Wiccans in the country? Maybe that explains things.

  4. Hey Charlie

Very good article, and snapshot of where we are on several levels

    A Few observations

Regarding masking…in the Mid Atlantic area, novus ordo parishes mimic the outside world. Almost everybody is masking, and some of the priests will bust on you if you don’t.
In the Latin mass parishes, virtually no one is masking. And some of these masses are packed. Just a small handful of people wearing masks, and I just assume these people may have legitimate health issues for which they need to take care. As it should be, seems to me.

Regarding politicians…I’ll believe the bishops are getting serious when I see a few of them excommunicated. Until then, not holding my breath.

Lastly, your comments about tradition minded bishops preparing to make some noise reminds me of activity we’re seeing in the secular world RE: states rights, and our hope that they will start to take back the power ceded to the feds but rightly belonging at the local level…

Glad to see your optimism and hoping your assessments come to pass

    1. We go to a Latin Mass and yes, it is packed. When the whole china virus started, they wore masks for a week or so and that ended. They started a third Mass on Sundays to comply with the Bishops “only so many people in church thing”, now they have to have 3 Masses on Sunday just to keep up with demand. They even had a third priest helping out for awhile. If you want a decent seat you need to get to Mass at least 1/2 hour early. Church is packed. During the shut down, our Priests were giving private Masses to families so everyone in the church could received communion. And they kept right on giving last rights and baptisms through the whole thing.

We just love living here where anywhere we can go in this diocese, we can be assured to attending a reverent, beautiful Holy Mass. And with Holy Water in the fonts! Thanks to our wonderful Bishop Strickland. Plus, in our parish, we have the reverse of Mary Immaculate. I would say we have just 10% wearing masks.

And right after I read your post, The Last Refuge posted their article about another town in Southlake, Texas. It is a joy to read about the grassroots of America fighting back against the anti-God, leftist agenda…

  10. I sure would love to believe that more bishops are “growing a backbone”! It was encouraging to read recently that they are preparing something? to address the many pro-abortion politicians who present themselves for Holy Communion. Archbishop Cordileone’s pastoral letter was fantastic. Sure wish we had hundreds like him!

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had a real Pentecost like the first one?! Come Holy Spirit!!

  11. Charlie, one surprising development I have observed at the parish level over the past year–the collection never decreased, despite only a fraction of the faithful attending Mass. I believe this represents the same fraction of the faithful who who take doctrine seriously, who strive for actual virtue instead of virtue-signaling, and who want their shepherds to speak and act like ambassadors of the Kingdom of Heaven. I agree that perhaps 50% of the flock may never return to Mass, but the laity who demand a genuine renewal in the Church, and are willing to work to bring it about, are those already seated in the pews.

    1. Father, I am very encouraged by what is happening in my diocese (Lansing). We have had holy water back for quite some time (at least in my corner of the diocese), and the past couple of months have seen the return of hymnals to the pews and of altar servers. One of our Perpetual Adoration chapters used to have a rosary hanging from each pew, in case an adorer had forgotten his own. These were all removed last year; but a couple of weeks ago, somebody hung them back on the pews. As of Saturday, every pew still had a rosary, so I guess they’re staying.

And I’m very excited and grateful for our Bishop Earl Boyea. This 2-minute video pretty much sums it up:

    2. Victura,
I totally agree. I know we have not only continued our weekly collection, but increased it. We really felt our priest and parish was doing its best to reach out to its parishioners, even going to their house to give the Holy Eucharist. Also, I truly expect a huge % of post COVID church attendance drop off, on top of the already shrinking attendance that has been going on for years. Where are we at, 20-25% of attendance from 50 years ago? Anyway, God does not need the fickle during these times, He needs the faithful ones.

  12. Really cool pic Charlie!!! I think I may print this one out and it may end up on my “wall of fame,” hallway!!! 😎 Anxious to hear that talk and hoping it will be up soon 🤞 🥳

I like this part of your piece:

Why do I like it? It gives me great hope in humanity! It just makes me smile to think of people finally discovering their reason for being and ultimately acknowledge their/our God!!! Oh May God inflame the hearts of all mankind that we may begin again and walk again in peace and solidarity with our God🙏

This is a very helpful message from Jesus to Anne a lay apostle I happened on this morning too!

    “May 1, 2005
Be at peace, dear children of Heaven. There is no reason for anything but a peaceful countenance. I am working in your soul if you are allowing me to do so and you will come closer and closer to me. You see that I am calling you to do this. I want you to behave like me and even to think like me. You will be gentle and kind to those you meet in your day. They will then consider what it is that makes you different. And there is a contrast between those following me and those following the world. The closer you come to me, the greater the contrast. I would like to see a multitude of people drawing closer to me. You can help with this project because you represent me. I am calling everyone and I use each of you to do this. Please be my voice in your world and cry out to your brothers and sisters. Tell them of my love for them and tell them of my wish to draw them closer to me. If you allow me to work through you, I will do so. If you practice loving all people and being merciful to all people, soon you will be speaking my name to them. You understand that if you are not merciful and kind, it will not matter what you say because people will be repelled. It is only through your love, inspired by me, that they are moved. Be as gentle as I am gentle and people will be drawn back into the safe pasture of my Sacred Heart.” Anne the lay apostle

Anyways, Charlie, I’m sure you’re just exhausted 😴!!!! Rest assured we are all holding you up with prayer and sacrifices until you get back home for a little R & R! 🥳🐿✝️😇 You hang in there dear friend of God, and thank you for this heartening piece!

  13. I pray for freedom from this fascist lockdown in Ontario, the worst & most extreme in all of North America.

It’s been very hard for me be hopeful the past while when like a boa constricter the Canadian & Ontario governments have been putting the squeese on us to break us while slowly trying to corner & coerce us into taking the experimental frankenshots. There’s no place to go, no place to hide, and no Christian resistance/community to take refuge in.

I dread the future confrontation options:
    1) Be taken by force to the covid concentration camps where we’ll be tortured, possibly killed, & the children molested.
    2) Fight off & kill the intruders to my home with kitchen knives & garden tools.
    3) Set the house on fire to keep the intruders away, but we burn to death.

    I don’t like those options!

    1. Al2,
“My hope is in the Lord”.
      What does that truly mean?
      “For man it is impossible.
But with God all things are possible”.
What is it that becomes possible?
We are called to trust and to “keep the faith” which neither “death nore rot can steal”.
None of us get out of here alive. I think people do not quite remember this when things get sketchy and they start to panic about what they will loose. But there is a great reward awaiting us and our Father desires that we be where He is. This earthly testing ground is but a moment in eternity and these things here on earth are but teaching props for our spiritual education. We were created to: “love and serve God (through each other) in this life” and to “be with Him in the next”. If everyone did this the world would be like heaven on earth but many people do not. Others evil actions do not give us the right to act differently than what we were created to be as we are told to “love our enemies and to “do good to those that hate us” as a reminder of the reason we were created even in these times of distress.
The readings Sunday from John 15 speak of our oneness with Jesus as a part of His very being:
“I am the vine, you are the branches.
Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit,
because without me you can do nothing. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.
By this is my Father glorified,
that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”
It is a great gift to be chosen to serve God who receives glory by our obedience and trust.
Many times that glory is borne by the crosses we must bear.
      Jesus, I Trust In You.

      1. Hi PHILLIP FRANK, when children are involved, you don’t just hand them over the pedophiles & murderers, it’s not as simple as you suggest. People easily preach just become a unwilling martyr, and don’t care what happens to the children… What does Jesus say about children? Shall I abandon them to be devoured by the wolves? It’s easy to tell & expect others to just accept death.

People need to carefully consider what they say & do about other people’s situations.

I seen the covid announcements at work yesterday, and I’m beginning to feel that boa tighten it’d grip.

        1. I get you on the children.
I have seven of my own plus their spouses (and their brothers, sisters, parents and children/grandchildren) plus my 25 grandchildren to consider. And two more on the way this year!
That is a lot of lives to dread over! I could easily obsess what may happen to them and statistically I may loose a portion of them to all manner of terrors the world has to give.
But my main conscern is their souls. I will never have the deep long-lasting relationship with them all that I hope for while here on earth but I will in eternity and that is comforting to me to know in heaven we will be together eternally without pain or fear. And Scripture tells us we will not even remember the pain of this life and that it will all be forgotten. So no amount of trauma will remain and I do not consider it until it actually happens. Then I suffer come what may, move along and hope again.
And my hope is in the Lord who told us not to worry about what they can do to our body because it is the spirit that gives life and is the eternal rhelm we are to consider here and now.
Hope this helps clarifies my last post a little better.

          1. Their “souls” is my point exactly! I’m not talking about adult nor teenage children here. The globalists & liberals WANT to separate young children from their parents, so these children can be destroyed mentally & physically before they’re killed with next to no hope salvation.

Statistics are meaningless, the loss of just 1 child is too much in this world of abortions.

            Young children need protection.

I just finnished listening to the “low intensity warefare” topic that the governments around the world are doing to their people to wear down their populations before proceeding with conventional warfare on their peoples.

Any people coming to force vaccines on me & my family will be treated as enemy soldiers in a conventional war, because there’s no acceptable alternatives.

        2. I just glanced at this earlier and immediately thought of a couple of things. (1) 2 Maccabees 7, and (2) that any time someone here is feeling “that boa tighten it’s grip,” there will invariably be someone else here to help them back on their feet (more or less gently or otherwise). Either way, it’s not an invalidation of a person’s situation, so much as validation of what helps transcend that situation, and the often debilitating limits we place on our growth in this valley of tears.

Swung back to read Phil’s comment later and couldn’t help but notice his reference to the seven children of his own. Interesting thing…that recounting in 2 Maccabees. I’ve always wondered if that has some sort symmetry with mention of the seven Churches. At any rate, the Mystical Church not only endures the tomb, but we’re assured She’s eventually the redeemed, resplendent and pure Bride.

What’s scarier? Suffering to get things done (purifying) here? Or, seeing Him on the other side only to realize how bedraggled and unfit for Heaven we are, in need of the Purgative Flames?

          Hannah had it right.

  14. It is always a delight to see Charlie’s latest installment in my inbox. I often find them filled with many insights, including practical applications, as well as being a source of encouragement. It is rare that while reading Charlie that I don’t have to pull out my dictionary to find the definition for a word or two. It is always nice to add to my vocabulary. Thank you Charlie for this lagniappe.

It became clear sometime back that while we are the beneficiaries of Charlie’s writings, he often has others specifically in mind when he writes. The bulk of this writing gives some very insightful “standard-operating-procedures” for our Bishops to regain their true and orthodox perspective during a most difficult and crucial time in the Church. I have prayed daily for our Church leadership for many years. After reading “Fire From Above” I am prompted to redouble my efforts in this regards so that God may raise up more great heroes like Sts. Paul and Augustine among our Bishops and clergy, those who speak with truth, clarity, and boldness. This in itself would most certainly hearten the faithful.

    1. I often ponder certain parts of Charlie’s writings and feel as you do Randal that he is speaking to or about other things on his spiritual mind from God’s perspective. This sentence I’ve been thinking about🤔 ever since I saw it:

“Make no mistake, some who even now seem timid and indecisive will become heroes in the days ahead, as God fills them with new heart, new hope, and new courage; while some we rely on will fade away. “

Especially the part…” while since we rely on will fade away….”

Drats I wish I knew what that means! 😂😂😂.

Oh well, we weren’t meant to know everything.

    2. Well, a Chinese student friend told me a group of folks more or less continually monitor for anti-communist Chinese internet postings and quickly preserve them before they are removed for contradicting the official narrative. It’s the only way they find out what is really happening.
Lesson: if you live in a controlled-media area (USA), quickly print anything you want to save. Fewer and fewer areas of the internet are protected from censors.
Forty years ago, before all this technology, it was a relatively simple thing to lose the person following you or to physically debug a room. We could tell when letters had been opened. Nosy neighbors did have to be reckoned with. Americans are not yet acclimated to this brave technological world where massive amounts of personal info is available and massive brainwashing is possible. In those days you were institutionalized if you had to be intensively brainwashed. The burden of payment has been shifted from the government to the individual. Now, in this century each person is expected to keep their Internet in good paid working order. And to keep their phone on their person so government agencies can track them, their contacts, medical history, politics and purchases. Internet content effectively can be controlled to align with the official covid fairytale. And you are expected to be informed, gullible and obedient to the latest mandates.

“The road map and aim was set out by the PMO and is as follows:

    – Phase in secondary lock down restrictions on a rolling basis, starting with major metropolitan areas first and expanding outward. Expected by November 2020.
    – Rush the acquisition of (or construction of) isolation facilities across every province and territory. Expected by December 2020.
    – Daily new cases of COVID-19 will surge beyond capacity of testing, including increases in COVID related deaths following the same growth curves. Expected by end of November 2020.
    – Complete and total secondary lock down (much stricter than the first and second rolling phase restrictions). Expected by end of December 2020 – early January 2021
    – Reform and expansion of the unemployment program to be transitioned into the universal basic income program. Expected by Q1 2021.
    – Projected COVID-19 mutation and/or co-infection with secondary virus (referred to as COVID-21) leading to a third wave with much higher mortality rate and higher rate of infection. Expected by February 2021.

    – Enhanced lock down restrictions (referred to as Third Lock Down) will be implemented. Full travel restrictions will be imposed (including inter-province and inter-city). Expected Q2 2021.
    – Transitioning of individuals into the universal basic income program. Expected mid Q2 2021.
    – Projected supply chain break downs, inventory shortages, large economic instability. Expected late Q2 2021.
    – Deployment of military personnel into major metropolitan areas as well as all major roadways to establish travel checkpoints. Restrict travel and movement. Provide logistical support to the area. Expected by Q3 2021.”

    1. No doubt evil plans have been and continue to be developing in Canada, the US and all over the world, Al. Best part: God’s Plan trumps any evil one. AND evil is caving in on itself, eventually spinning itself into exhaustion with its actors turning on each other. We can choose to dwell on the frightening things and more deeply scare ourselves and those around us, or simply take note of them and choose to focus, instead, on God, acknowledging Him and building each other up with our next right steps while allowing God to make of us a sign of hope to those around us. The old order is dying, crumbling around us, while we can live in detachment with interior freedom, a freedom that keeps us intent on: Trust, Do, Love.

      2. Well stated, Beckita. The picture says it all.

AL, It is my prayer that your heart [spirit] can rise up and be comforted and strengthened by the words of counsel and encouragement that people here send forth to you. The words are just as much for us as for you. Know that we are concerned for you and your plight. We also carry the fears, but strive hard not to let them rule us – a tough work.

Surrender your fears/anxiety to the Lord [you KNOW this, but hard when fear is in control]. Two things that I go to constantly to keep on a somewhat even keel – the prayer [novena of surrender] and the Memorare. And always the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy. There are times I feel I can hardly pray, but I say the words anyways, just asking Jesus and Mary to accept my poor anemic effort.

Short Story: This morning at Mass [Wed] we heard again the words of the Vine and the branches. I said [in my thoughts] to the Lord. “You know I feel terrible this morning [physically]. I feel like a crushed grape.” Then the thought – “to become the choice wine!” Whoa! A Holy Spirit moment! My head came up, my eyes widened – “This is to die to myself!” Just as Jesus did. Thanks, Lord!

Be Blessed Al, you, too, Beckita and all who come here for comfort or encouragement or just company.

It is always good to hear you reiterate and elaborate on things we see and read about with more detail and analysis. I have read and have been cheering, so to speak, those bishops and cardinals standing up for the right to life and issues of Catholic faith that cause scandal and do great harm to the Church as promoted by our “devout” Catholic non-president and his army of pagans.

Your description of the growing process of the fighting spirit of our spiritual leaders is one that is pertinent in us as well. I think we have been disappointed with a lot of the action and inaction of many of our priests and bishops during these and in other times. As you astutely noted, it is a time rich in opportunity for which spiritually leaders to take their stand for Christ and the Church. Let us follow and support them.

    1. Sorry, Littleone, we can’t link to an article which holds Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre as a model for how to weather the Storm. He led those for whom he was spiritually responsible into a schism from the Church. To this day, the SSPX has chosen not to fully return to the Church. Our goal is to encourage people to remain in the Barque of Peter while working and praying to bring about reform and renewal.

      1. It’s interesting, Beckita. I engaged a priest who was wearing a cassock in a conversation in an airport once. He was an SSPX priest. I commented that he was not following our Pope and his order was not in Communion with the Catholic church and he maintained that they were. I couldn’t figure out how he could assert that, but he discontinued our discussion when I challenged him on it.

        1. Very interesting, Kim. I do understand the intense frustration with certain members of the hierarchy. It seems to me that leaving the Church during this, her Passion Time, is like deserting Christ during His suffering and death on the Cross. Maranatha!

      2. The SSPX is not in schism. Yes, their position is not completely regularized at this time, but they are not in schism. Father Zuhlsdorf has written extensively on this topic his blog.

        1. Ben, it seems there are differing opinions on this matter. Some heavyweights believe the SSPX is schismatic. Cardinal Burke, former head of the Vatican’s highest court, believes they are in schism: Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, former Prefect of the CDF, also made such a statement. And I just consulted the canon lawyer in this house who says, in reality, they are schismatics because they don’t accept the legitimate authority of the Church. However, he added, the Church does not officially use this term in hopes of regaining this group.

    The Surrender Novena: Day 9

Pray always in readiness to surrender, and you will receive from it great peace and great rewards, even when I confer on you the grace of immolation, of repentance, and of love. Then what does suffering matter? It seems impossible to you? Close your eyes and say with all your soul, “Jesus, you take care of it.” Do not be afraid, I will take care of things and you will bless my name by humbling yourself. A thousand prayers cannot equal one single act of surrender, remember this well. There is no novena more effective than this.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything!

Mother, I am yours now and forever.

    Through you and with you

  28. Working on the “surrender thing” this week. I am employed in a rural county (doing youth development and healthy living work, such a joy!) by the state land grant university, which announced this week that all students and employees on-site and statewide will need to take the jab beginning fall term 2021. No mention of any exemptions. It’s weird to finally see it, in writing, in your email, after reading of others having to face this. No thanks, not willing to risk my natural immune system by contaminating it with an experimental gene therapy shot developed or tested on the tissue of aborted babies. I have an appointment with our small rural county commissioners in two weeks to discuss changing my position to a county one (which is was 2011-2016), otherwise I assume I will be fired by the university by late fall after numerous warnings, and starting a job hunt in our rural community. “Let go and let God”, so I am actually feeling somewhat excited to see what He has planned. Have been learning detachment by degrees this past year, thanks be to God and His guidance through all these weird C things.

Only approved vaccines can be mandated. The Biden Admin is saying no to mandates even as they try to get businesses and other organizations to mandate-by-defacto. If there are other people in your situation, it might be possible to find a lawyer who is a patriot and willing to help fight this. Note that I actually think the PTB will shy away from allowing a suit on this subject because they might very well lose. They will find other ways to get at you later, but people will benefit. I have no recommendations for a lawyer, except for Harmeet Dhillon who appears to be happy to take on such work. They may be worth checking with because they might be launching a general class action suit on this obvious subject or know someone in your area who might take a group on.

The virgin birth of the Church

The virgin birth of Christ became the virgin birth of the Church. Here we pass from the Incarnation to the crucifixion. Remember that our Blessed Lord changed his attitude toward his mother at the marriage feast of Cana. She was then known as the Mother of Jesus. But at the marriage feast of Cana he called her “woman.” Going back to Genesis, this is the woman whose seed would crush the head of the serpent. Then a year and a half later, when she was worried about him, and sent messages to him, imagine him saying, “Who is my mother?” He took all relationships out of the order of blood. For Christ they no longer exist. “He who does the will of my Father is my mother, my brother, my sister.”

  30. Novena to Our Lady of America for True Change and Hope for America

After praying the petition below for each day, pray the following:
Sister Mildred’s Prayer to Our Lady of America

O Immaculate Mother, Queen of our Country, open our hearts, our homes, and our Land to the coming of Jesus, your Divine Son. With Him, reign over us, O heavenly Lady, so pure and so bright with the radiance of God’s light shining in and about you. Be our Leader against the powers of evil set upon wresting the world of souls, redeemed at such a great cost by the sufferings of your Son and of yourself, in union with Him, from that same Savior, Who loves us with infinite charity.

We gather about you, O chaste and holy Mother, Virgin Immaculate, Patroness of our beloved Land, determined to fight under your banner of holy purity against the wickedness that would make all the world an abyss of evil, without God and without your loving maternal care.

We consecrate our hearts, our homes, our Land to your Most Pure Heart, O great Queen, that the kingdom of your Son, our Redeemer and our God, may be firmly established in us.

We ask no special sign of you, sweet Mother, for we believe in your great love for us, and we place in you our entire confidence. We promise to honor you by faith, love, and the purity of our lives according to your desire.

Reign over us, then, O Virgin Immaculate, with your Son Jesus Christ. May His Divine Heart and your most chaste Heart be ever enthroned and glorified among us. Use us, your children of America, as your instruments in bringing peace among men and nations. Work your miracles of grace in us, so that we may be a glory to the Blessed Trinity, Who created, redeemed, and sanctifies us.

May your valiant Spouse, St. Joseph, with the holy Angels and Saints, assist you and us in “renewing the face of the earth.” Then when our work is over, come, Holy Immaculate Mother, and as our Victorious Queen, lead us to the eternal kingdom, where your Son reigns forever as King. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be . . .

By thy holy and Immaculate Conception, O Mary, deliver us from evil!

Day One. Our Lady of America, you asked that the United States of America “be the country dedicated to my purity” and that your children in America “be the children of my Pure Heart.”

Please intercede for us that we may be granted this grace and morally good leaders who will act according to the revealed will of God and the foundational principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America.

Day Two. Our Lady of America, you said, “I desire, through my children of America, to further the cause of faith and purity among peoples and nations. Let them come to me with confidence and simplicity, and I, their Mother, will teach them to become pure like to my Heart that their own hearts may be more pleasing to the Heart of my Son.”

Please intercede for us that we may be granted this grace and morally good leaders who will act according to the revealed will of God and the foundational principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America.

    1. I appreciate the warning about the graphic details shown in the images at this site, San San. Some are very sensitive to images and may well be disturbed after viewing. For those who have this type of make-up, don’t go. This news itself – which has been covered far and wide for some time – may well be graphic enough for some.

I’d you haven’t listened to Jonathan Cahn I highly recommend.

This is from 2017. He remarks we are living in biblical times.

He’s the author of the Harbinger.

I’ve been asking Our Lady when we could expect to see signs of The Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart and Flame of Love Operations. May would be good!

Does anyone believe this was just one of those silly omissions that happen?

  33. Hopenjoy, I also work for a health care Agency. Our agency makes a big deal of following the UN charter of human rights. That charter has a clause about none will be subject to any experimental treatment. Is there a way to check if your employer follow that ?

  34. VATICAN CITY, May 7, 2021 — Chelsea Clinton has spoken out against freedom of speech on vaccine safety at a Vatican conference dedicated to open dialogue.

Clinton, 41, responded to a question about so-called “vaccine hesitancy” regarding Covid vaccines by saying that there must be a global effort to crack down on vaccine-critical social media posts.

“I personally very strongly believe there has to be more intensive and intentional and coordinated global regulation of the content on social media platforms,” she said.

“We know that the most popular video across all of Latin America for the last few weeks that now has tens of millions of views is just an anti-vax, anti-science screed that YouTube has just refused to take down.”

Clinton added that anti-vaccine content “flourishes” across the world by way of social media platforms. Her attempts to convince the managers of these sites to remove the material has not worked, she said.

“We know that — because I have tried — that appealing to the leadership of these companies to do the right thing has just not worked, and so we need regulation.”

    1. The Leftist beat goes on. So surreal that this comes via a Vatican sponsored conference. Still, I’m totally at peace thanks to Charlie’s ongoing analyses and reflections on these events as they are. For anyone who has not yet done so, do have a listen to the visit videos which are posted over at the CORAC website: Evil is exhausting itself while we are partnering with God to bring His Kingdom more fully to earth!

  35. “Bishop Burns has seemed, to me, to be a reasonable and orthodox man who wants to live the faith well. ”

Well, I don’t believe he does.

Next week, he setting up “jab sites” in High Schools so that the experimental gene therapy can be given to adolescents — anticipating that it will be approved.

The mRNA shot changes the “code” in your genes. In effect it is “software” to manipulate you.

Adolescents need to be protected. I believe it is to make sure they lose fertility.

    1. Disturbing news, yet, what we don’t know for certain, San San, is how poorly or well a person – including a Bishop – is informed. There certainly remains a battle for truth in public communication with a plethora of misinformation and disinformation abounding.

      1. I’m tired of Bishops telling us its our “moral” obligation to take a gene altering jab that is “experimental” and that fetal cell lines were used to develop it. I don’t care at this point if Bishops are “unaware” of the dangers…..they need to stop advocating for something they know nothing about then.

        1. Unaware of relevant Biblical passages? (Both wise & prophetic) Or have they abandoned their faith in Christ for a more worldly solutions & a worldly savior?

There’s no shortage of people making the wrong choices who we expected to be know better, but it’s a little discouraging that some of these people are supposed to be our leaders, protectors, and guides…

          1. On a bright side, I finally overcame a reluctance to attempt a Sunday Mass nearby after being told that I would not be turned away for no reservation and facial gear. It was a noon Latin Mass and I was welcomed with open arms. That was a sigh of relief and filled my heart with joy. Praise be to God for the leaders and leadership rising up with courage and charity! Now I am determined to locate some remnant laced fabric and make myself a mantilla this afternoon! ❤

            Happy Mothers days to all!

  38. Genetically modified mosquitoes have been released for the first time in the United States as part of an experiment to combat insect-borne diseases such as Dengue fever, yellow fever, and the Zika virus.

UK-based biotechnology firm Oxitec, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said it released the mosquitoes in six locations in Monroe County’s Florida Keys: two on Cudjoe Key, one on Ramrod Key, and three on Vaca Key.If successful, some 20 million additional genetically modified mosquitoes will be released later in the year.

“We really started looking at this about a decade ago, because we were in the middle of a dengue fever outbreak here in the Florida Keys,” FKMCD Executive Director Andrea Leal said during a video news conference. “So we’re just very excited to move forward with this partnership, working both with Oxitec and members of the community.”

The insects released by the biotechnology firm are all male, so they don’t bite. They’re expected to mate with the local biting female mosquitoes, and in doing so, they will pass on a lethal gene that will ensure their female offspring die before reaching maturity.

According to Quartz, areas including Malaysia, Brazil, the Cayman Islands, and Panama, where similar experiments have been carried out, have seen mosquito populations drop by as much as 90 percent.

The project has faced backlash from residents, who say their consent was not sought for the experiment.

    Parish Family,

    Setbacks and a Breakthrough

I’m sorry that it’s been a while since I’ve offered an update. A lot has happened and I didn’t know what to communicate or how to communicate it while it was happening, so I didn’t. I’m also sorry that last week many in the parish were exposed to out of context, inaccurate, and even sensationalized reports about my health condition. Now that my laptop was delivered to the hospital yesterday, I’ll plan to write to the parish directly about once a week, although hopefully not from the hospital.

Yes, as you know I’m still in the midst of my second stay at the hospital in this highly unusual situation. Without getting into too many details here’s essentially what happened: last week I went back to the hospital with a blood clot in my leg, which ended up traveling to my lungs. The major setback in the hospital was that the treatment for the clots (blood thinners) caused my kidney to bleed again.

This whole ordeal has caused a considerable amount of additional suffering for me. In all honesty, this hospitalization while less physically painful has been much more painful emotionally. I’m not made to be in isolation (no visitors) away from friends, family and all of you. I’m not made to be confined to a bed. Not knowing when I’m going to recover hasn’t helped. In a very real way, however, I know Jesus has drawn near to me in my pain, insecurities and fears and is walking with me. I’m always on the watch for the Father’s little gifts, and I receive them through the nurses and doctors here and also my friends, family and parishioners whom I’m able to talk to from time to time. It almost goes without saying the prayer offered by all of you is a constant source of strength, encouragement, and healing. Thank you!

My physical health situation is highly complex and requires doctors from multiple disciplines to work together to help me recover. The good news is that earlier this week, I underwent a procedure that the doctors believe might have been the breakthrough that will stop the bleeding in my kidney for good. So far so good. My doctors expect me to make a full recovery even though the timeline of that recovery is uncertain. This gives me hope as I cannot wait to return to be with you at the Altar of the Lord.

Just as none of us choose the sufferings that come our way in life, I didn’t choose this trial. According to the well-known analogy, what matters in the end is not what hand you’re dealt in life, but how you play that hand you’re dealt. How we respond to God’s grace in whatever circumstances we find ourselves is what God is looking for. Never forget that whatever is happening in your life, the saving presence of God, his unwavering love, his understanding and compassion, is always there for you. Only our God offers us the promises he offers. Only in Jesus can our deepest longings and desires be fulfilled. Only in Jesus does our life ultimately make sense. If things are going well in your life, praise him. If things are challenging, praise him. Either way, Jesus is always worthy of our praise since he is the source of our peace, our redemption and our hope. He is the Resurrection and the Life!
