A Year of Judgment

The iron rule of economics and of human behavior: What you reward you get more of and what you punish you get less of

Conventional wisdom says that the election was a split decision – with Democrats picking up the House and Republicans adding to their majority in the Senate. Conventional wisdom also says that the next two years will be nothing but gridlock. I doubt it.  I think some unprecedented things happened election night that are deeply consequential.

I was more wrong than I have ever been about the results of an election. Oh, I have looked more wrong at times…but, again, something very deep and fundamental happened here, something that last happened 90 years ago.

I was working with hard data that showed the past partisan history of the individuals who voted early – and was further modeled based on the past partisan performance of individual precincts for those voters whose partisan history was unknown. That showed a big lead for Republicans in the suburbs of Dallas – and in most spots across the country. Yet when the returns started coming in, the early votes were almost the inverse of what I had expected. It made me wonder if some voting machines had been programmed to “flip” votes. But I was watching four suburban counties – and that would have required a truly massive, coordinated conspiracy. Absurd. I just did not understand, at all, what had happened.

On Wednesday I saw preliminary numbers from around the country that showed suburban women had voted at a 64% level for Democrats. Suburban women have been majority soft Republican for decades. This would have to be a massive shift. As I looked around the country, the results fit that data point. In the Houston and Dallas suburbs, the Republican Party was decimated. I looked at the Chicago area. Thirty years ago, Chicago was blue, while suburban Cook and the five counties which surround Chicago (Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and Will – called the “collar counties”) were all solidly red. Twenty years ago, suburban Cook had gone purple, but the collar counties were safely red. This year Cook and all the collars went blue, In Denver, the sole suburban Republican Congressional District went Democrat. Republicans took losses in Orange County – the previously conservative bastion of the Los Angeles area. Suburban women had, indeed, shifted their allegiance suddenly and decisively from red to blue.

The last time a significant demographic cohort had done such a thing was in the early 1930’s. Until then, blacks had voted overwhelmingly Republican. It was partly the legacy of Lincoln, but also because the Republican Party was the firewall against the Ku Klux Klan, then the paramilitary wing of the Democratic Party. Under Franklin Roosevelt, blacks started voting Democrat. It was astonishing, less than a decade after the “Klanbake,” – the 1924 Democratic convention where nearly half the delegates were Klansmen. Republicans were slow to pick up on the sudden demographic shift. Once they did, they considered it a fluke brought on by the Depression and figured that, once the crisis was past, blacks would come back home to the Republican Party. Didn’t happen.

On election night, completely baffled, I spoke with a successful, young executive in the equities market I knew. He is about 30 and I had been impressed by him earlier in the cycle. He told me we were just caught up in a cultural wave that couldn’t be stopped. He said that people of his generation do not vote on rational grounds, but just go by feelings. I objected that surely all the violence, suppression of speech and intimidation could not be justified by them. He smiled and said, “Oh, but my generation DOES think it is justified.” I looked at him in astonishment and said that if that is true, we will not be able to preserve liberty. In the most chilling comment of the cycle, he calmly told me that of course we won’t be able to…that he has long known that his generation would be the one that would finally forfeit liberty in this country. I was utterly speechless.

On Wednesday, I was disbelieving as I dived into data that confirmed the sudden, dramatic shift of suburban women from soft R to moderate D. Perhaps they were turned off by Donald Trump talking mean…but how could that trump the constant rioting, violence, intimidation, censorship and mob action of the left? Is identity politics really more important to them than the prosperity and safety of their own families? I am still baffled.

Actions, though, have consequences. Perhaps suburban women thought they were sending a corrective message to Trump. If so, they sent a more powerful message to Democrats and the media. They rewarded leftist rioting, violence, intimidation, censorship, and mob action with their votes. The Democrats have learned they will pay no serious price for mob violence. The establishment media has learned that there will be no serious price for a constant barrage of false narratives. Social media companies have learned they will pay no serious price for routinely censoring Christian and conservative speech. If unelected bureaucrats want to oppress Christians for trying to live their faith, the electorate just told them to have at it. We may tut-tut, but there will be no serious price to be paid. The left may be civil for a time, but even if they are, they have learned they can go to violent mob action with impunity any time they want or need to. What you reward you get more of and what you punish you get less of.

Right now, Democrats are actively trying to steal the governor’s and US Senate race in Florida. Why not? They may fail, but they will pay no price for trying. A few nights ago, a left-wing Antifa mob surrounded Fox News Host Tucker Carlson’s home, terrifying his poor wife who hid in a pantry and called 911. They vandalized his house and his car. Why not? Authorities seemed pleased they had dispersed the mob – but I have heard of no one being thrown in jail for it.

This is deadly serious. In the 12 years between 1905 and 1917, Lenin’s relatively small group of revolutionaries had their ups and downs, always pushing the envelope with violence. Russian authorities came to think they could live with them and that the sporadic, intense violence didn’t mean much of anything…until the Revolution succeeded. Within a year, it was an absolute dictatorship and all semblance of individual autonomy for Russian citizens was gone. In the 12 years between 1921 and 1933, Hitler’s Nazi Party had its up and downs – with the future Fuehrer even spending time in jail. Always, it pushed the envelope with violent mob action to achieve its aims. Eventually, otherwise responsible German officials and businessmen convinced themselves they could live with it – and even ultimately control Hitler. In 1933 he became Chancellor – and within a year the states that formed the German federation were stripped of all autonomy and made into mere administrative districts of the federal government. All individual freedom was stripped from the people and Hitler made himself absolute dictator. Ironically, when the terror came to their respective countries, many of the most enthusiastic advocates of both Hitler and Lenin were jailed or executed. These thought they were guaranteeing their own dominance by subjugating the people of the nation, but they were only sealing their own doom.

Authoritarian movements have an odd and arrogant certainty of their own moral superiority. They never say they want supreme power because they are power mad. They make up a good cause – a cause so good they can use it to justify their violent mob tactics – it is for a greater good. For Lenin, it was all for the good of the workers. The bourgeoisie was the enemy, relentlessly vilified and oppressed. Ultimately, ownership of a cow and a goat was sufficient to get you imprisoned. By the time Stalin took power, picking up unauthorized fallen wood from the forest for your stove was sufficient to get you summarily executed. With Hitler, it was all for the German people, who had been betrayed and stabbed in the back by “perfidious Jews,” foreigners, and politicians who had a different opinion than Hitler.

After he took power, Hitler was relentless in vilifying Jews, blaming them for everything that went wrong. Last Friday was the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the hideous night in 1938 when the Nazi’s relentless attacks on the Jews burst forth in horrifying nationwide violence and murder, It was prelude to the Holocaust – and all done on behalf of the “gentle, peace-loving German people.” And if any of those gentle, peace-loving Germans disagreed, they were obviously fellow travelers of the “perfidious Jews” – and could join them in the camps.

For a good decade before the Hutus in Rwanda murdered Tutsis en masse, the Hutus had vilified and scapegoated the Tutsis for all their own governmental failures – just as the Nazis did with the Jews for over a decade before the persecution erupted into murderous violence. The details vary, but the larger sweep is always the same. When the restraining power of the law corrodes, a society without God is just a raw scrabble for power. The scrabblers never say it, but that is all it is. The quest for power without reference to God justifies any means for attaining it. The reality is that the atheist left has become the idiot spiritual heir to the Communists, the National Socialists, and the Hutus. They lack the intellectual heft of some of their forebears, but have all the imperial certitude in their own moral pre-eminence. If you are a believing Christian or Jew; if you value family; if you value liberty for all, then you are the new bourgeoisie, the new Jew, the new Tutsi – fit only to kneel before the social justice warriors or be exterminated.

The spirit of anti-Christ is deceptively simple: it is the belief that good can be done without reference to God. It is as futile as the belief that thirst can be quenched without reference to water. Oh, it is persistent, though, for its adherents actually delude themselves that they are doing good, that their intentions are noble. Throughout history, leftist movements have arisen which insist that sand or sawdust are the only proper ways to quench thirst. (The fundamental feature of modern leftism is its belief in absolutist centralized power that tolerates no dissent. Under those terms, all the evil totalitarians of history can properly be described as leftist in the modern sense.) As they fail and things turn quickly and starkly desperate, they blame dissenters for the failures rather than even consider that they may be wrong. They persecute, imprison, and then execute their dissenters…and then many scapegoats from their own movement, until they finally choke on all the sand and sawdust and it all collapses under the weight of its own folly. Sometimes a society can rebuild from such folly; more often it just trades persecutors. The spirit of anti-Christ is ascendant in the world these days.

Many expect the next two years to be a complete stalemate. More likely, it will be the intense and violent skirmishes that precede outright war. Incoming Democrat committee chairmen promise to wage war against Trump, issuing subpoenas and endless investigations. Trump is not a docile little lamb, though. He can launch criminal investigations into Democratic corruption by some of its top leaders. He has something the Democrats don’t have; actual evidence. But the Democrats now have something he doesn’t have; suburban women and millennials. Millennials are almost uniformly overly credentialed and shockingly uneducated, thinking (like the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz) that their diploma makes up for their lack of brains. In the last century, the variants of socialism have murdered over 100 million innocent civilians. Just in the last decade, socialism turned prosperous Venezuela into a desperate hellhole where pre-teens turn to prostitution to help their families survive. So what ideology do millennials prefer as the most just? Socialism. They have become invincibly ignorant, unable to ask the critical questions necessary for independent thought, only able to parrot the indoctrination they received at the leftist mills that were once universities. It is both tragi-comic and heartbreaking to listen to some ignorant college kid who has embraced fascist ideology and fascist tactics accuse others of being fascist for arguing with her. They are proud of and even insistent upon their malicious ignorance, thinking it enlightenment.

I had deeply hoped for a solid conservative victory. It was our best hope to get out of this battle with the least amount of violent strife. If the larger populace is committed to equal justice under law for all, arrests and jail for all rioters and activist thugs could have tamped this thing back down. But once the bulk of the populace no longer believes in objective standards of law, equally applied, the political system must inevitably fall. The political levees are under assault. I don’t think they are going to hold. Meantime, the hierarchy of the Church and the churches are as weak as they have ever been. The worst are predators or busy themselves making war on the faith established by Christ and passed on by the Apostles. Even the best are ineffective at defending the levees of the institutional churches – or holding predators to account. And yet, “…the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong…” (Ecclesiastes 9:11).

On their pilgrim way to the promised land, the Israelites were attacked by the powerful Amalekites (Exodus 17). Moses went up to the top of the hill overlooking the battle with Aaron and Hur. As long as Moses kept his hands up in prayer, the Israelites had the best of it, but when he wearied and his hands dropped, the Amalekites would prevail. Seeing this, Aaron and Hur lifted up Moses’ hands for him when he tired – and the Israelites won the battle. The battle is to those who call and rely on the one, true God. Neglect neither the duty of Moses nor the duty of those soldiers of Israel. Lift each other up when weariness overtakes you. The battle is the Lord’s, no matter what the odds seem.

It is written that the time would come when scoffers will arise, following their own ungodly passions and setting up divisions; worldly people, devoid of the spirit. (Jude 1:18-20) A man recently observed to me that liberty and the Constitution are not the point; faith and family are. I acknowledged the truth of that while noting that liberty and the Constitution are the terrarium in which faith and family can safely thrive. Scoffers have now mounted a full-scale assault on both the faith and its terrarium. Neglect neither, resting assured in the knowledge that Christ is with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20)

Last year began the process of everything being revealed. All have chosen their sides. Now begins a year of judgment, in which each shall reap what he has sown; destruction for the scoffers, mercy for those who have persevered and endured in faith. It will be far more unpredictable, volatile and incendiary than any can now imagine. With full knowledge, each of us has given witness before God to who we are. Don’t go wobbly as the winds and waves rise.

Mordor approaches. Keep your arms to the battle as you raise your hearts in prayer, lifting each other up when weariness encroaches. We have entered the terrible times, but those who endure in faith will see the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the renewal of the world.

  1. Wow! Sharing in the speechlessness, well nearly speechless, when considering the statistics on the suburban women votes and the common millennial mindset. Stunning. The invincible ignorance is downright frightening. Add the apostasy within all Christian churches and no wonder St. Gabriel insisted there was no avoiding this Storm.

It’s a blessing that we don’t exactly know what’s coming. Weighing historical precedence for where we now find ourselves brings new meaning to the exhortation to live day by day, perhaps moment by moment at the most intense times. What I DO know for certain is that time given each day to be present to Christ in order to speak our hearts to Him and to give Him time to speak to us will strengthen us and restore our equilibrium when needed. It will also cement the truth that He is always with us.

    1. Shocking, yet not. I think within my entire family, I am the only woman that voted Republican. It saddens me immensely that my daughters, granddaughters, nieces and cousins believe in a godless, sinful world. Lord have mercy. My prayers will continue for the conversion of their souls.

God be with you and all here, and may the Blessed Mother protect us, St. Michael the Archangel protect us from evil and our guardian angels and all the other angels guide us. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us when our littleness, weakness and lack of eloquence frighten us. Lord have mercy on me a sinner and teach us to love like you do.

…”The moment I reached the brilliant light it felt as if my spirit melted into what I can best describe as an ocean of Divine Love. This love was so great and encompassing that I know very well that there are no human words that can adequately describe it. It is the Love of G-d that is so great, so sublime, and so perfect that it passes all human understanding. In other words it is so all-encompassing that it cannot possibly ever enter or fit into the mind of man nor can our words describe it! Our mind of flesh cannot comprehend or hold this powerful and awesome spiritual love of G-d! I was in a state of total ecstasy as I just melted into this ocean of sublime love that G-d felt for all of His creation. It was all around me and came from within me and from without me and seemed to pulsate with its own life as it expanded outwards through the entire universe. Within and as part of this vast ocean of love I also felt tremendous peace and restfulness. This was G-d’s rest. It was much different than any other peace or rest on earth. This rest of G-d was a release of an invisible constant struggle that we all have while living on earth, though we are not aware of it. Nothing on earth could ever compare to this, ‘His’ awesome peace and love, that my spirit was now experiencing.”…

    1. Good to see you, Sapperdepitjes. Actually, in the US a president is limited to serving for 10 years in office. He or she can only be elected to two full terms according to the 22nd amendment to the US Constitution. However, if an individual becomes president through the order of succession, then they are allowed to serve an additional two years.

Fr. Chad Ripperger, an Exorcist, speaks of this point: quite candidly, I might add. He said “feelings” (paraphrased) (in the below video), the devil manipulates human feelings to his advantage.

The example he gives is two male neighbors. One guy feels compelled to tell his neighbor ‘he has a nice, green lawn’ and upon delivery gets a snarky negative reply unknowing the guys wife just castrated the husband for spending too much time on the lawn.

We don’t know what’s in other peoples lives, minds, relationships…

So relying on feelings instead of rational, fact based discernment may lead to error. Fr. Ripperger stated all must discern the facts and their knowledge of the Church teachings

  4. Hi Charlie. I wonder how many Republicans actually welcomed this change in the balance of power because of their dislike of Mr. Trump, those wolves-in-sheep-clothing McCain types. This certainly throws a wrench into the works for the President.

I understand better your comment about how a Republican victory in the House would have made dealing with the Left a *little* better. Now that the Dems have taken control of one part of one branch, this victory will only serve to embolden them further. Instead of being deservedly rejected, this election has given them a mandate of sorts, showing that many Americans don’t care about their crimes, their sponsoring of violence, or the censorship, or their rotten attacks on good people — Trump must be stopped at all costs. They are encouraged to proceed unrestrained with their current tactics. Look out!

Still looming in the future is the chaos and fullness of the Storm. Everything continues to march in that direction and it seems unlikely it will be averted. Mitigated, yes, but not averted. It is curious how events have unfolded since 2017, and it is getting messier and more complicated all the time. And I haven’t even brought up our Church! Interesting days ahead.

    1. PD, emboldened is exactly the word I just used in discussing all this with my husband. The Dems have a touch of victory and you can hear the threats already. It’s a scary time, not like anything I’ve ever seen in my lifetime!

Charlie, your analysis is shocking and horrifying at losing the female votes this way. The Lord told me years ago, as I saw the early rise of radical feminism, that it was the Garden of Eden all over again – many women have been deceived by the evil one!

When I began to read this last night, Charlie, and the fear crept in, I heard the words in my head, “You have been created for this time”, as we’ve been told here before! This is a very strange feeling, but trying not to imagine what lies ahead. God bless you all!

Right now the only one able to rally people seems to be trump and he doesn’t appear equipped to do the job. It’s no longer enough to tweet – judge it’s time for him to speak to the people. I pray he is open to the Holy Spirit…

  6. An important aspect if the evil is that it is globalist (think global act local); we see a push towards destroying nations via mass migration and multi cultural.

Some heartening news lays before us. Hungary, Poland and increasingly Italy are moving overtly Christian government. The new president of Brasil was a cradle Catholic and practicing Pentacostal.

In my view, Christendom* is at war with the globalist tyranny. We are currently in the mobilization phase.
Perhaps we will prevail, perhaps not. But we will follow Him.

*I reject the term ‘The West ‘ on explicitly religious grounds. Both paganism and the enlightenment are dead

Also, has anybody else sensed that God is speaking to us when ‘Paradise on earth burnt to ashes’ is in the news?

    1. Timothy, yes Italy has elected a “sovranist”, anti-EU Government, One of the Ministers, Matteo Salvini has been successful so far in reducing mass migration. He says he is not a practising Catholic , nonetheless he referenced Christian values during his electoral campaign , showing on one occurrence a Bible and on another a Rosary to the people participating to one of his rallies. He says he supports the Judeo-Christian roots of Europe, the same roots who were stripped by the European Constitution. He was heavily criticized by the Italian Catholic hierarchies.
In spite of all above, I do not know how long this Government will resist the globalist pressures and the financial war the EU and the European Central Bank are directing against Italy. Moreover the Government is formed by two parties very different from each other and the President of the Republic, who should have a balancing role in tune with the Italian Constitution, being elected by the previous Parliament with a Dem majority, has a bias toward this Government and after the election tried to oppose the formation of this Government and tried to impose a technical Government under EU unofficial control, something which is unconstitutional and unheard of, but alas we are not in democracy anymore, I think. Anyway, in the end the current Government was born. Someone says also thanks to favorable support by Trump (I do not know), but the same sources now say that the difficult situation Trump is facing at home will perhaps leave us more alone and subjected to EU and specifically Germany tyranny.
      So I hope we resist.
I also hope our Government will manage to deliver some of its policies apart from stopping mass migration. Our wages stopped to increase ten years ago!
That is why I pray for both our Countries and as you say Christendom!

  7. Last year I watched the documentary The Agenda with friends and also read on-line about the book The Naked Communist and it seems that communism could easily be a reality for this country. I remember as a teenager, my own father telling me that communists said that they will take over this country and they will do it without firing a single shot. The fact that I always remembered that statement reminds me that I was born for these times. Complete surrender to God and a strong prayer life is my only answer to not let fear overtake me. The fact that, as Charlie said, so many are completely ignorant of the reality before us is what makes me most afraid.

  8. Charlie,

This is Gary from Iowa. Last Saturday night, we went to listen to Fr Chad Ripperger, an Exorcist speak at a Church near Madison, WI. He stated, “that 22% of the 18 to 25 year olds are diabolically possessed! So this goes along with you comment about the millenials.

Thanks for your overview. I too suspect this will be a “riveting” year.

      Less than 1% possessed.

I feel that I have gone through that oppression myself though I am a gen X.

It is terrible! I thank God for the great woman of Faith that was my mother. Her greatest gift to me was her example of Faith and trust in God. And her example of Forgiveness.

      1. Cardinal Ratzinger has a collection of sermons in a book titled “What it Means to be a Christian.” I gave my copy to someone, so can’t quote him, but in 1964 he said something to this effect: We are seeing something the world has never been seen before: youths that have no sense of God and are incapable of knowing him. (If someone could find the words, I’d be grateful)

Oppressed, obsessed, or outright possessed, Fr Ripperger’s claim that a fifth or a quarter are demonically influenced is plausible. Without having any knowledge of God and raised in a fatherless, self-centered, instantly-gratifying culture (not unlike 1920’s Berlin), the devil is free to work his black magic. If they can’t know God, how can they conceive of a devil? Neither grace nor sin exist, so what guides their morality besides basic natural law? This is scary because the victims are probably unaware — unless they agree to possession.

I knew a couple women who claimed to be witches. I kindly laughed at them because it was clearly nonsense and none of them were as hot as Elizabeth Montgomery. But that was the devil’s doing: nothing to see here, it’s pretend, not real, so just ignore it. Meanwhile he could establish a foothold in the person. Today, thanks in large part to TV and Illuminati hip-hop musicians displaying demonic iconography like butterflies and covering one eye, satanism is flourishing today like a fashion.

This is Nicki Minaj, a richly successful pop star who is idolized by boys and girls. Her videos are nothing less than pornographic. Here, she is describing an entity inside her whose name is Roman. He “comes out” during videos and performances and helps her do things she otherwise could not. It would be unusual that this is just a simple mental disorder. Tragically, it is probably the real deal:

(You Tube link edited out; you can search with the title, “Nicki Minaj & Her Crazy Alter Ego Personality Boy Roman,” on You Tube if you wish to view this.)

Let’s pray for Nicki, Beyoncé, Miley, Madonna and all the decadent pop stars who, as Fr Benedict Groeschel said, are in a lot of trouble.

During the Storm, many of the faithful may be called upon to exorcise lesser demons. We must shield and arm ourselves for battle.

My own 2cents is that T. turns a lot of people off with a suffocating air of braggodocio; Reagan was confident but humble.

Off topic-who would you like to see on the short list for AG? Or at this stage, is our
country too far gone, and to paraphrase HRC, ‘At this point, what difference would it make?”

A concurring opinion of your post is Steve Quayle- explaining why he thinks a civil war is coming. Excerpt from Usawatchdog,(link below): “I believe the civil war is part of the fifth column and the plans of both the Russians and the Chinese military to initiate a civil war to turn a country against itself. A nation divided cannot stand. A house divided cannot stand . . . . I am getting reports about all of the weapons from all over the world going into Mexico. These weapons are being distributed even to the gangs in the United States. I think this is one thing people do not recognize is the gangs have adopted more of a military positioning than just simply a criminal positioning.” Quayle thinks what is going on is global. Quayle says, “People have got to understand the New World Order is about ‘out with the old world and basically the foundation of Christianity’ . . . to substitute a Luciferian elitist world and the destruction of mankind. . . “, the remainder-https://usawatchdog.com/civil-war-is-coming-to-america-steve-quayle/

  11. Yup, liberals will be bold now and we will have to rise to the occasion. You are right: this is what happens when a culture tries to be good without Christ. I felt it years ago, sitting in a public school room waiting to take the SAT . . . where a crucifix would have been in a Catholic classroom there was, instead, a big sign in purple that said “Be Nice”. Looked like trouble to me. And it is: we now have a lot of emotionally driven people untethered to truth who are willing to hurt you to make sure that you are ‘being nice’ too. You can’t reason with them and you can’t convert them. We just have to pray for them. We make no sense to them. It comes down to basic truths that they have been taught not to accept because it’s ‘not nice’. Their emotionally driven reasoning is a perfect circle, it is self contained and self sustaining, but it does not touch the truth. I think that’s actually G.K. Chesterton’s definition of madness. It’s very sad. This is why I believe that this mess absolutely cannot end until the evil here has burned itself out and God performs a miracle of conversion for many, many souls. I have no idea what this is going to look like, but I think history is about to repeat itself . . . and it seems to me that humanity finds ways to be worse, not better, with each new clash. Many liberals think that they are more evolved than conservatives. I heard a woman on a PBS news interview actually say that humanity is on an evolutionary journey and we have moved on in our enlightenment beyond the things conservatives want to protect and preserve. She said, literally, that we’re finally ready for Communism. No one in the newsroom batted an eye but my jaw was on the floor. I thought these kinds of statements were only found on, like, YouTube comment feeds under weird videos one might fine oneself watching laaate at night. Or on Star Trek. Nope, this is real. Now, this might seem all doom and gloom . . . but actually I am full of hope. What else is there to do now but fight for the truth and perhaps die for it? This life is not all there is, and if there isn’t a conflict soon, that will mean that I can only look forward to helplessly watching my children’s souls erode away into a dark eternity as the foundations for spiritual and mental health and freedom are taken away effortlessly one by one. We’ll find a way through if we trust in Jesus.

  12. So I can’t blame this on cheating. We women have done this to ourselves and to our loved ones. That is one of the saddest realities I have ever heard. First women fall prey to the lie of abortion thus destroying their unborn children. Now they ( don’t wanna say we again cuz it’s not all…) choose a side that will destroy their living children. I was unable to stop this train wreck even in my own family. Now what? I shudder to think…

  13. I am having a deer in the headlights moment after reading this article. I am not exactly sure why because I was saying before the election that if the dems lost the riots would start right away. If they won it would take a couple of weeks. Maybe reading it from someone with political experience and everything makes it more real.

I visited with one of those suburban women types. She said she was afraid of Trump. My guess is she has been having a steady diet of MSM news and all things negative towards President Trump.

  14. I would be very depressed by this piece Charlie but I’ve seen this coming now for quite a few years. I take great consolation in the Church and the promises of Christ and friends like those I’ve made here at TNRS. I think of St Teresa as Beckita quoted her recently:

Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things are passing away. God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone suffices.

  15. Why did Trump lose those suburban women?

I posted the following comment on “Final Pre-Election Thoughts”

“President Trump should not have said “barbed wire, when used properly, can be a beautiful sight”. Followers of Christ cannot approve of such language. This type of language plays into the hands of the Left. We become their mirror image when we speak like this. President Trump would be a much more effective and inspiring leader if he would avoid the use of such stupid and unchristian remarks.”

I think this is the only comment I’ve ever posted on ASOH or on Charlie’s old web site that didn’t get a single “like”. There is a tendency not to criticize the President here no matter what he says. But I have a sense that such remarks cost him dearly in suburban precincts.

    1. Yes, Frank, I have had rolled my eyes at some of those comments the President has said.
But, I would rather have a immensely talented surgeon with a lousy bedside manner operate on me than one who is incompetent but has a smooth charismatic personality. (I believe that one preceded President Trump if you get my drift.)

Unfortunately the suburban women have accepted that darn poison apple once again.

    2. Frank, I agree with you that some people hesitate to criticize President Trump for fear of sounding liberal, but I cringe at so many things he says. He (we) is human and flawed, but I truly believe he is playing a major part in battling these evil forces. All we can do is pray for him that the Holy Spirit guides his actions and his speech.

    3. Interestingly, Frank, just after I cleared your comment, I checked in at FB where I found this article posted by Fr. Rick Heilman. This does not mean that President Trump can do no wrong. It’s simply another perspective.

Here’s the piece, He Fights, by Evan Sayett

My Leftist friends (as well as many ardent #NeverTrumpers) constantly ask me if I’m not bothered by Donald Trump’s lack of decorum. They ask if I don’t think his tweets are “beneath the dignity of the office.” Here’s my answer:

We Right-thinking people have tried dignity. There could not have been a man of more quiet dignity than George W. Bush as he suffered the outrageous lies and politically motivated hatreds that undermined his presidency. We tried statesmanship. Could there be another human being on this earth who so desperately prized “collegiality” as John McCain? We tried propriety – has there been a nicer human being ever than Mitt Romney? And the results were always the same.

This is because, while we were playing by the rules of dignity, collegiality and propriety, the Left has been, for the past 60 years, engaged in a knife fight where the only rules are those of Saul Alinsky and the Chicago mob.

I don’t find anything “dignified,” “collegial” or “proper” about Barack Obama’s lying about what went down on the streets of Ferguson in order to ramp up racial hatreds because racial hatreds serve the Democratic Party. I don’t see anything “dignified” in lying about the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi and imprisoning an innocent filmmaker to cover your tracks. I don’t see anything “statesman-like” in weaponizing the IRS to be used to destroy your political opponents and any dissent. Yes, Obama was “articulate” and “polished” but in no way was he in the least bit “dignified,” “collegial” or “proper.”

The Left has been engaged in a war against America since the rise of the Children of the ‘60s. To them, it has been an all-out war where nothing is held sacred and nothing is seen as beyond the pale. It has been a war they’ve fought with violence, the threat of violence, demagoguery and lies from day one – the violent take-over of the universities – till today.

The problem is that, through these years, the Left has been the only side fighting this war. While the Left has been taking a knife to anyone who stands in their way, the Right has continued to act with dignity, collegiality and propriety.

With Donald Trump, this all has come to an end. Donald Trump is America’s first wartime president in the Culture War.

During wartime, things like “dignity” and “collegiality” simply aren’t the most essential qualities one looks for in their warriors. Ulysses Grant was a drunk whose behavior in peacetime might well have seen him drummed out of the Army for conduct unbecoming. Had Abraham Lincoln applied the peacetime rules of propriety and booted Grant, the Democrats might well still be holding their slaves today. Lincoln rightly recognized that, “I cannot spare this man. He fights.”

General George Patton was a vulgar-talking, son-of-a-bitch. In peacetime, this might have seen him stripped of rank. But, had Franklin Roosevelt applied the normal rules of decorum, then Hitler and the Socialists would barely be five decades into their thousand-year Reich.

Trump is fighting. And what’s particularly delicious is that, like Patton standing over the battlefield as his tanks obliterated Rommel’s, he’s shouting, “You magnificent bastards, I read your book!” That is just the icing on the cake, but it’s wonderful to see that not only is Trump fighting, he’s defeating the Left using their own tactics.

That book is Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals – a book so essential to the Liberals’ war against America that it is and was the playbook for the entire Obama administration and the subject of Hillary Clinton’s senior thesis. It is a book of such pure evil, that, just as the rest of us would dedicate our book to those we most love or those to whom we are most indebted, Alinsky dedicated his book to Lucifer.

Trump’s tweets may seem rash and unconsidered but, in reality, he is doing exactly what Alinsky suggested his followers do.

First, instead of going after “the fake media” – and they are so fake that they have literally gotten every single significant story of the past 60 years not just wrong, but diametrically opposed to the truth, from the Tet Offensive to Benghazi, to what really happened on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri – Trump isolated CNN. He made it personal. Then, just as Alinsky suggests, he employs ridicule which Alinsky described as “the most powerful weapon of all.”

Everyone gets that it’s not just CNN – in fact, in a world where Al Sharpton and Rachel Maddow, Paul Krugman and Nicholas Kristof are people of influence and whose “reporting” is in no way significantly different than CNN’s – CNN is just a piker.

Most importantly, Trump’s tweets have put CNN in an untenable and unwinnable position. With Trump’s ability to go around them, they cannot simply stand pat. They need to respond. This leaves them with only two choices.

They can either “go high” (as Hillary would disingenuously declare of herself and the fake news would disingenuously report as the truth) and begin to honestly and accurately report the news or they can double-down on their usual tactics and hope to defeat Trump with twice their usual hysteria and demagoguery.

The problem for CNN (et al.) with the former is that, if they were to start honestly reporting the news, that would be the end of the Democratic Party they serve. It is nothing but the incessant use of fake news (read: propaganda) that keeps the Left alive.

Imagine, for example, if CNN had honestly and accurately reported then-candidate Barack Obama’s close ties to foreign terrorists (Rashid Khalidi), domestic terrorists (William Ayers), the mafia (Tony Rezko) or the true evils of his spiritual mentor, Jeremiah Wright’s, church.

Imagine if they had honestly and accurately conveyed the evils of the Obama administration’s weaponizing of the IRS to be used against their political opponents or his running of guns to the Mexican cartels or the truth about the murder of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and the Obama administration’s cover-up.

This makes “going high” a non-starter for CNN. This leaves them no other option but to ratchet up the fake news, conjuring up the next “nothing burger” and devoting 24 hours a day to hysterical rants about how it’s “worse than Nixon.”

This, obviously, is what CNN has chosen to do. The problem is that, as they become more and more hysterical, they become more and more obvious. Each new effort at even faker news than before and faker “outrage” only makes that much more clear to any objective observer that Trump is and always has been right about the fake news media.

And, by causing their hysteria, Trump has forced them into numerous, highly embarrassing and discrediting mistakes. Thus, in their desperation, they have lowered their standards even further and run with articles so clearly fake that, even with the liberal (lower case “l”) libel laws protecting the media, they’ve had to wholly retract and erase their stories repeatedly.

Their flailing at Trump has even seen them cross the line into criminality, with CNN using their vast corporate fortune to hunt down a private citizen for having made fun of them in an Internet meme. This threat to “dox” – release of personal information to encourage co-ideologists to visit violence upon him and his family — a political satirist was chilling in that it clearly wasn’t meant just for him. If it were, there would have been no reason for CNN to have made their “deal” with him public.

Instead, CNN – playing by “Chicago Rules” – was sending a message to any and all: dissent will not be tolerated.

This heavy-handed and hysterical response to a joke on the Internet has backfired on CNN, giving rise to only more righteous ridicule.

So, to my friends on the Left – and the #NeverTrumpers as well — do I wish we lived in a time when our president could be “collegial” and “dignified” and “proper”? Of course I do. These aren’t those times. This is war. And it’s a war that the Left has been fighting without opposition for the past 50 years.

So, say anything you want about this president – I get it, he can be vulgar, he can be crude, he can be undignified at times. I don’t care. I can’t spare this man. He fights.

How anyone who has striven to put on the mind of Christ can defend this remark is baffling. The rambling rant Father Heilman posted is 15 month old — long before the barbed wire remark. I voted for Trump and voted straight Republican on 11/6. I like it when he puts a very biased and arrogant press in its place. But we’re not going to win any war when we use the language of the enemy.

I am reminded too of the Obama out and out boots on the ground interference in the Egyptian and Israeli elections and the total mess the both of them made of Syria. Their full intent was to replace legitimate governments with the Muslim Brotherhood.

      5. The phrase I’ve heard as my favorite describes President Trump as a “Necessary Glorious Bastard”. It has almost become a term of endearment for me. The man is most certainly a warrior, a brawler, and time will tell if he will have been exactly what we needed. I just dont see Our Lady, St. Michael or Jesus much offended by his words and actions. Just my take.

    4. Honestly, Frank, I find that to be the problem.

When you (collective “you” — not you, Frank) are willing to throw your lot in with the abortionists, demonstrated anti-Christians, and violent thugs because you don’t agree with “the way” the President said something, the problem is you, not the President. I tire of those who hold their support/vote “hostage” until they feel they have been adequately coddled and catered to. The situation in this country is dire. I’m less concerned with someone who’s manner of SPEAKING makes someone uncomfortable than I am with a group who has ACTED with violence and prejudice against our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.

If you would look back during the presidential primaries, you would see quite a bit of criticism of Trump on the old web site. He wasn’t my choice of candidate. I begrudgingly voted for him against Hillary. Since his election he has proven (through his actions) to be much more effective in the face of challenges (both foreign and domestic) than any of my first choices would have been.

I have also currently have criticisms of Trump. As an example, Trump’s tariff policies have made things tougher in the company I work for. I never once, however, considered voting to give Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Planned Parenthood and ANTIFA my support because of this.

There are many things that worry me about the direction of our country, our world and our Catholic faith. The president’s language is not one of them.

We here talk about the Time for Choosing. So it is. It seems there is a large and perhaps growing segment of the population is addicted to the state of Not God. Looking for an excuse to vote Not God. Looking for an acceptable rationale for advocating, supporting, advancing and ENJOYING the State of Not God while deluding their conscience that they are DOING THE RIGHT THING!

In a strange way Trump’s language has empowered that kind of wrong thinking among those who enjoy their way of life.

    5. imho, POTUS has a large audience. Surely he will offend some no matter what he says. Ronald Reagan called evil *evil* and a wall came down. Obama could did not call out terrorists. He said ISIS, which he referred to as ISIL, was a *JV team* as they grew in strength. Tough talk is warranted in some cases. The event of this caravan, POTUS may believe was one of those times. He is taking on a global dark power and is doing so in a mighty way, as I see it. This coming from an Illinois suburban collar county mom who did not fall prey to the election propaganda.

    7. I appreciate your comments Frank. As an early supporter of Trump, when my conservative Catholic friends simply could not fathom me supporting him over Rubio, Cruz et al (like lots of commentors on CJ’s old site I might add), I have spent many introspective hours working through all this.
I supported Trump in part because he was in nobody’s pocket (as far as I could tell) and the past gentlemanly approaches of McCain and Romney were easy targets for the press as they systematically dismantled their reputations as soon as they entered the general.
I don’t worry too much about the mid-terms. It was inevitable, at least IMO. Trump is at war with the fake news, from whom many people get their opinions. Putting aside the pro-life suburbanites (like my family), consider what the soccer moms are listening to as they fill their family’s lives with never ending activity, listening to a TV in the kitchen while getting the kids prepared for the next destination. They hear that Trump is a racist, anti-women, fascist, etc etc. day in and day out. I am not excusing their actions, but this is how a majority of people have their opinions “given to them”. I would venture to bet that almost none of them heard Trump say anything about barbed wire. But they DID hear the fake news tell them what to think of that comment, and many others. The press was never going to give this guy a fair shake. They turn even his best comments into something profain and sinister. You can’t fight that by being more gental and civil.

Anyway, in the end, we cannot put our hopes in any of these political institutions. That is one thing we should all have learned from the mid-terms.

She did not know just a week or so ago when I mentioned it that POTUS was not taking a salary. Sadly she falls right into the demographic you mentioned, and my two nieces, new to voting, just went along with her, as I did as a young adult (followed my parents political preferences). Election day, she told me she was on the fence about voting at all and asked for guidance in an email. I gave her a link to her sample ballot and some sound advice about how to avoid ads and go to sources for info. It was too little, too late and she did not go blue or red, she told me she went “green” when she could. Many Cook Co. candidates were unopposed democrats. Heavy sigh.

But I heard it and it was embarrassing, crude and un-Christ-like. I pray outside an abortion clinic during the Forty Days for Life campaigns and am staunchly pro-life. But that’s not going to prevent me from criticizing Trump when he exceeds the bounds of decency.

        1. I respect that. One thing I know about myself is that I am outcome-oriented (for lack of a better way to put it here). When it comes to the President I evaluate him based on outcomes. I don’t have to like all of the rhetoric, but his behavior has not “trumped” the outcomes in my way of measuring this. He has been staunchly pro-life, which should make most of us here feel good. He is not perfect, but who else has been willing to meet the press on the front lines, locked and loaded? No politician in recent times has exposed the depths of their bias for all to see, and with the SCOTUS hearings, it should be more obvious than ever that abortion is at the root of the insanity on the other side. It is NOT the President’s rhetoric that fuels the hate. He is not above criticism … I agree … but I thank the Lord during every family Rosary that he is our President at this point in history. Imagine the alternative.

          1. I thank the Lord too, every chance I get, for the tireless way President Trump fights for a country and people, and values. This man loves America and wants to see God acknowledged again, I believe, because he loves God too. I judge him on his love. He is doing the best he knows how and I believe that God is using him because Trump is willing. Charlie has told us to judge righteous judgement. No doubt the president is a sinner, but I watch his face intently, his eyes, his expressions. He is sincerely trying to save our republic and root out corruption as best as he knows how. I think, if anything, I see a man rising to the occasion and who knows what conversion is going on in his heart. Maybe he is seeing the vast evil rising and about to swallow us whole and knows he has to do his best, trusting that God will do the rest. A good man, fighting back the forces of evil, and fundamentally changed because of it. This is what I see that seems more important. I am grateful to have him do his best to rally us. He is not a spiritual leader, but he is most definitely a leader for our times. Would that we had our spiritual leaders front and center rallying us as he does. I cannot fault him for trying his best.

But the fact is, the wave happened and will continue to happen – and you’re post so eloquently states what I was feeling (but you are so good at putting it all in prose). I would almost described it as despair, but with groups like ASOH, I quickly avoid that label because I know what the outcome is. We win with Jesus! We just need to be ready to take the next right step when the time is right. Thank you Charlie. God bless us all!

  17. Charlie, There may be a silver lining to the Dems taking control over the House, and stifling legislation potentially beneficial to the country, such as infrastructure repair and modernization.

The European Union’s (EU) economy is heavily overleveraged with government and business debt, worse even than during the 2007-8 world economic collapse, and their economy is now in a downtrend; the same is true concerning debt and a receding economy for China. Economists in this country are estimating our next down turn is developing and will start to show late 2019 to early 2020. In the meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has just reiterated that they are continuing their program of raising short term interest rates to bring them in line with a historical average (an average that is about double the current rate), and the fed is also letting bonds and mortgages acquired in great volume under their prior Quantitative Easing (QE) program to roll off of their books as they expire, thus reducing the money supply and financial liquidity in our system (which is largely the world system, because of the dominance of the US dollar in world commerce). The net effect of current fed policy is to head off future inflation– but the world economy is now contracting, so the fed’s policy is effectively further hindering the US and world economies.

US government and business debt is also at a historically high level. When economies contract, governments collect less tax income, as business income shrinks, and that makes servicing government and business debt harder to do, which further reduces motivation to spend. Historically, the fed always waits too long to reverse its anti-inflationary interest raising programs. The net result is that our next Presidential campaign will likely be conducted while our economy is shrinking.

Trump stated after the election that he was eager to work with Pelosi to achieve common legislative goals, such as reducing the cost of pharmaceuticals and improving our infrastructure, but if the House was going to bog down the Executive Branch with investigations, then legislation would also suffer.
Thus, Trump will be positioned to blame the Demos for the coming economic slump, and lack of positive legislation.

Re working women and recent college and HS graduates newly working for a living, they do tend to be liberal about spending other people’s money, but they will eventually realize how well-intended government welfare taxes away their own worked for income. Thus, older (presumably more mature and knowledgeable voters) tend toward Conservatism.

    1. Money supply was a huge reason for the economic collapse of 2008. But so to was the banking committee run by Barney Franks with support of Chris Dodd. They placed the full faith of the United States to back all mortgage loans. They eliminated the mortgage rules set up after the Great Depression (one of the causes of the GD was a housing mortgage collapse) to prevent another collapse. Banks ran with the government backed mortgages and loosened rules. The banking committee was run by Democrats under George Bush. He was on CNBC (business channel) repeatedly warning of an imminent financial crisis because of what the banking committee had set in motion. He was ridiculed by Barne Franks and Chris Dodd as stupid. They declared that their policies were just fine.

When the elevator door opens they will cut women off. It’s as if all differences between men and women no longer exist and men should no longer show any sort of courtesy to women. Who knows, maybe the women have brought this upon themselves. I’m just waiting for one of these millennial females to file a complaint against me for what they may perceive as a ‘micro aggression’ because I refuse to exit an elevator before they do.

        1. Another sad relevant tale of woe: my daughter and son-in-law and their baby boy live with me. They don’t have a car so at around 6am Grandmom starts her taxi duties ending with my daughters late night waitress shift. Last summer his family came to visit from New York. His brother borrowed my car and immediately backed it into my house. The car is now literally duct taped together with tape the color of the car. Nobody hardly notices. Anymore. But I digress. Well, said brother came last week to move in with us. He still hasn’t apologized or even mentioned it. And when I drive my son-in-law to and from work he simply gets out of the car and slams the door and goes to his destination. No open door, no goodby or drop dead. Chivalry is dead, cremated and buried. And yes, I’m living la vida loca.
PS: my daughter is pregnant again. They got married on his lunch break at the concrete factory where he works by a notary who had her best baseball cap on that day! Yeeha!

  20. There is still some background noise about economic collapse. I see a huge push to buy gold and silver and even rumors that Trump wants to take out the Fed. The rumors warn the collapse could be so terrible that it could outpace the Great Depression. Could economic collapse be the Great leveller that brings both rich and poor to face hunger and want? Is that the way the satanists/socialists gain full autonomy?
This fire we see blazing in CA is perhaps what the whole country could look like with so much envy towards the rich. My husband still mocks me and calls me a “prepper” but i have only enough for a month and with stores to help the children in my neighborhood if we have to hunker down.
That is, if I get the luxury of riding out the storm with my family. My parish workplace has families with so many spiritual needs and basic needs to survive. Last Monday, I had to follow two brothers to their car to speak with their dad about their bad behaviour in religion class. One is so hyperactive, he literally hangs upside-down on his chair and his older brother, when I was speaking about the 3 obstacles to holiness – ourselves, the world and the devil – made the devil sign at me with both his hands. The rest of the class hates them. I know they only need Jesus more. Pray for their mother and me as we meet tomorrow to discuss. The older brother is only in 9th grade but argues with me that abortion is a right.

I want to help all these families I have been hired to serve. As I approach my 55th birthday, I struggle with the avarice of life and the deep personal need i have to serve my husband and sons who have special needs. It’s a struggle to want to go deep and dark and ride out the Storm, and when it passes, come out to help on the other side. While events swirl around us, my own soul is a swirl of opposing yearnings.

The army is at the gates and I imagine I am Aragorn to inspire my courage. I have doubled my prayers for the Holy Souls. I feel sure they’re going to be my secret weapon. Invincible and swift to aid. May God grant us all peace and blessings.

  22. All week before the election I listened to NPR analyze changes in voter layout. One interview I heard that seemed to summarize this change was a woman in Texas who was raised Evangelical Protestant and who never, NEVER would have considered voting Democrat. Then through her church, she and her new husband got involved with helping refugees and spent the next several years doing that. Suddenly, Trump changed the rules on refugees, and the change directly affected people they had been working with. For that reason, she didn’t think she could vote Republican.

  23. I have been following the Messages given ( through) Christina Gallagher From Ireland. They are given so that we prepare SPIRITUALITY for the Judgement coming. WHAT WE SEE NOW makes those messages all the more BELIEVEABLE.
The -Don’t Care- attitude scares me as much as those against life-against Christian principal , Half of the people did not care enough to vote. They lack the courage to get involved .
I feel we need to prepare as Noah did, but a Spiritual ark. The people had a chance to back President Trump’s life effort, but tried to stop that by their vote.
With all that is happening, ( like the fires in California) does anyone ask- COULD IT BE GOD IS UPSET WITH ABORTION?

      1. I know that. But I have followed her mission for years now-read much, the many miracles , The many messages that have taken place, the experiences of priests that met with her.
The church is often slow- look how long to recognize Fatima, and the miracle of the sun was witnessed by many. Her Spiritual Director Fr McGinnity with a Doc.degree sees nothing in conflict with Catholic teaching. When they were in Minn. His mass took 2 hours. I noticed His Reverence. Christina passes all messages through Him.
Judge by the spiritual & physical Miracles. BY THIER FRUIT YOU WILL KNOW THEM.
I KNOW MOST PEOPLE DON’T BELIEVE HER ( or a # of other Visionaries ). There are more souls at stake now then ever. In the past there were the Profits . Can we not believe that God is trying to communicate with HIS PEOPLE NOW?
Our Lord in the boat– EVEN THE WIND & THE SEA OBAY HIM. Fast forward, 50 inches of rain because the storm stalled.-? As I have read-until our nation (and world) stop killing GOD’S new life, we cannot expect his Blessings & Protection.

        1. These are critical times, David. I have to say, though, that from the very start of my being public, obedience to legitimate authority has been critical to me. I gladly submitted to my Bishop and was very clear that I would obey him on these spiritual matters. I had my team prepped to scrub the site of any offending references had the decision been to significantly restrict me. The only restriction imposed was that I not publicly speak of these things on Church property in the Archdiocese of Denver – and I have scrupulously held to that. As both Beckita and Steve BC can attest, though, we were prepared to act quickly had the restrictions been harsher or more comprehensive. Now I likely would have written on cultural and political matters as I always had, but I would have gone completely silent on the supernatural things – and would not have directly spoken from a Catholic perspective, even though the latter is the right of every baptized Catholic. I figured, if it came to that, as an offering of reparation for all the disobedience in the Church, I would exceed my actual duty of obedience to that extent.

I want you to contemplate Luke 2:51…”Then he (Jesus) went down to Nazareth with them (His parents) and was obedient to them…” It does NOT say He pretended to be obedient to them…it says He WAS obedient to them. Imagine the majesty of that…God, Himself, choosing to be obedient to creatures He had formed and chosen to be parents to His incarnation!

In the world, obedience is usually understood to mean submission of the lesser to the greater. That is not how it is in Christian obedience (I speak of obedience to legitimate authority in its proper sphere here, not servile submission on all things). Christian obedience is a means of opening up channels of grace. If my superior gives me direction that is properly considered, even if mistaken, I open up a clogged channel of grace for him by my obedience. If I am petulant, my superior’s deep and serious contemplation and advice opens up a channel of grace for me. We do not trust that, by properly ordered obedience, that neither my superior nor I will ever err: rather, we trust that by acting in proper order, God will cover and re-direct even our errors – and prove our own fidelity in the process.

Ms. Gallagher has disobeyed the legitimate authority of her Bishop. Until she regularizes her relationship with him, she has nothing to say, however nice it sounds, that is worthy of hearing here. I really appreciate the contributions you make here and I look forward to reading many more of your insights. But I do not allow citations of any who are in disobedience to the legitiamte authority of their Bishop here. May God bless and keep you.

            1. Well, thank you for that, David…but I do not so insist out of fear of hurting my position with my Bishop. My whole understanding is that Christ INTENDS us to be obedient to legitimate authority over us, so in my lawful obedience to those Christ commands to be obedient to, my primary obedience is to Christ. To do anything other is to fail to trust that Christ will achieve His will – in part, through my obedience. If I am only obedient when I agree with the decision, what does that avail me? Even the most vicious reprobates can easily live that sort of “obedience.”

As a fellow Brother, you can always ask for a discussion of the topic. Not every motion gets an approval and it appears it was probably due to the “political nature” of your motion. As you know, politics are left at the door as we are all focused on Christ.

          2. Seeing your many gifts and talents, the stunning insights from supernatural visions you’ve been granted, and your personal interactions with residents of heaven and Jesus himself, your obedience to the faith and the church is your most admirable and inspiring attribute, Charlie.

This characteristic is common among all the saints.

            From the Diary:

Jesus told her “I was obedient to my parents, my executioners and now I am obedient to my priests”. (St Faustina said the devil can imitate humility but not OBEDIENCE.)

Jesus said to St. Faustina: “Yes…when you are obedient I take away your weakness and replace it with My strength. I am very surprised that souls do not want to make that exchange with Me.” I said to the Lord, “Jesus, enlighten my heart, or else I, too, will not understand much from these words.” (381)

“My daughter, know that you give Me greater glory by a single act of obedience than by long prayers and mortifications.” (894)

            1. “obedience” I was praying (on obedience) during today’s Rosary- sorrowful mysteries. Specifically, the agony in the garden where Jesus asked the Father to remove this cup… but to Thy will be done.

Also, pondering the Stations of the Cross during the rosary… when Jesus took up his cross, obedience to the local government. Further, “obedience” to Mother Mary and Saint Joseph.

  24. Charlie, you stated the condition of our country and our world very clearly. It’s very depressing. However, God is still in control. (Thank God!) St.Faustina’s message to the world in the 1930’s is to keep trusting Jesus. We must do our part with prayers and sacrifices, especially the Rosary.

Then in the 1960’s, Jesus asked Elizabeth Kindelmann from Budapest Hungary to write her diary and to spread the message of the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the world. “The Flame of Love itself is actually the immense love and grace of God Himself which He wants to give to all of us, especially in these times, which will do two very specific things – to ‘blind Satan’ and ‘to save souls.’ ”

We can’t give up, that’s what the Satan wants. We must keep praying and keep trusting Jesus. As Charlie says, “We have entered the terrible times, but those who endure in faith will see the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the renewal of the world.” Read about it at – http://www.flameoflove.us. The devotion of the Flame of Love has the Church’s approval.

Jesus I trust in you. St. Faustina, pray for us.

  25. This election hit me especially hard because I thought there was still that silent majority out there that held the same values as me. I know one election does not a movement make, but I’m having trouble seeing things moving in the opposite direction. When Texas becomes a toss-up state, we’ve lost the conservative firewall.

    Liked by 8 people

    1. Exactly, Jayman; you’ve concisely articulated what’s been rolling around in my head without my ever really putting it into words. When we have to worry about keeping Texas (TEXAS!), conservative ideology is toast in this country. I really, truly believed that normal Americans would never give the leftist thugs a pass and would instead come out in droves to help save our country. No dice.

Every single candidate for whom I voted on both the federal and state levels lost. Trump won my state in 2016. Yet in my state, Republicans just handed over the Governor’s, Attorney General’s, and Secretary of State’s positions to the Democrats. We passed over a God-fearing, pro-life war hero to send a pro-death Democrat back to the US Senate. The Republican Congressman in whose district I live just lost to a Democrat upstart. Tuesday was not a red-letter day in Michigan (no pun intended).

Perhaps I should be discouraged; but there’s no time for, and no point in, succumbing to discouragement. It’s time for more prayer, more sacrifice, more Trust-Do-Love as the period of skirmishing ends and the hour of all-out warfare is almost upon us. Couragio, y’all; God’s got this, and we will be victorious if we fight for Him and in His grace and strength.

Which reminds me… I haven’t been to Confession in a while. I’ll make a point of going in the next few days.

His running-mate is the daughter of my former boss, Dick Posthumus. I follow Michigan politics pretty closely. I had high hopes for John James, but to no avail.

My state of Indiana fared pretty well. We kept our Republican Congresswoman and we replaced our Dem Senator with a Republican. South Bend is becoming South Chicago in terms of Democratic vote fraud, but state-wide we’re still pretty conservative.

I’m glad that Indiana fared better than Michigan did. I was overjoyed to see Joe Donnelly go down. I love the state of Indiana; I was born there and lived there till I was 5. My grandparents had a lovely farm not far from Greencastle. We always spent Thanksgiving there when I was growing up. This time of year always makes me think of the farm, and extended family, and my grandma’s down-home Southern cooking (she was from Alabama).

      3. I think we here in Ireland can fully sympathise with what all right-thinking people in the US (no pun intended) feel in the wake of what happened – although at least you weren’t totally steamrollered, as the Senate is still ok, in the way we on the pro-life front here were with last May’s total betrayal of God (the second in three years).

When Charlie said: “I was more wrong than I have ever been about the results of an election. Oh, I have looked more wrong at times…but, again, something very deep and fundamental happened here” my immediate response was: “Charlie, we here in the Irish pro-life movement felt absolutely, exactly, 100% the same”. All our analysis, based largely on the intensive doorstep canvassing we undertook country-wide for over a year in advance, not to mention the widespread advertising etc. (much of it destroyed by “liberals”, of course), the Masses, vigils, the massive Pro-life marches, far larger than anything the other side could do, had pointed to a victory, albeit narrow.

        And then… well… yeah

In our case, the “something very deep and fundamental” seems to have been not so much the inability of people to recognise Truth but their fundamental desire to turn their back on it despite recognising it. Because if they didn’t recognise it, then why did the majority in our doorstep canvasses say they would vote pro-life, since to promise so to vote is to clearly recognise the truth of the position? No, I think (and I’m not alone here) that in their heart of hearts they DID recognise it but in the end deliberately decided that they didn’t want to go against the spiritus mundi, they deliberately turned against the Truth in order not to be “uncool”, they deliberately gave in to all the lies of the other side and allowed themselves to be made fools of. Oh, and of course, they deliberately permitted the killing of innocents.

Despicable. And that’s speaking of those who had previously indicated they had some inkling of the Truth. For those who backed the thing all along and exulted in its passing the word despicable is too weak. I stress: that word refers to their actions, not to them as people. I deeply regret that a good many, if not all, of my own family are among them, not just the younger contingent. The rot is deep.

Still, as I’ve said before, we aren’t despairing. And neither are you. Times are dangerous, and seem set to become more so, but as for me and my house…

Blessings to all. Just think – Advent is just under 3 weeks away. Wow! Maybe I’ll take it more seriously this year, in terms of preparation, than heretofore. Because it was that sort of year – and Advent is actually the start of a new year in itself, our Mother Church’s Year. J.

        1. Wow, jaykay. Thanks for your perspective of what went awry in the voting last May. To choose death while full well knowing the truth certainly exists here as well and it baffles the mind. Such as this invites the Storm. We are historically known to be a stiff-necked people and I ponder anew that God’s Justice is the very fiber of His Mercy. Honestly, I think we’d surely destroy ourselves without His Justice. Maranatha!

  26. At first after the election I thought we were going to see a slow motion obstruction back; but then rapid obstruction began, with seeming possible decent resolve ahead ( pretty clear Repub leads with pretty clear Dem interference patterns).
But now with Charlie’s checking and evaluation, I see that yes, more of the same is near inevitable if the voters indeed didn’t really care about Mobs etc; rather than just sending a corrective signal.
So I just sent this off to an influential millennial close relative:

“While here, could you take a moment and tell me what “check” on what specific political thing you thought a Democrat win was necessary for?
All I could think of was Trump proposing an executive order on something ‘ much as Obama had done” ( on DACA — still being batted back and forth). I couldn’t understand that being a bottom line.”
And await the response for NRS.

  27. Excellent article. I am a suburban white woman who voted Republican straight down the line, as did the other women I know. I am as mystified as you as to the reason for women voting Democrat. It makes absolutely no sense to me. It saddens me. I think so many people are confused about right and wrong. The media has a strong influence over the way people see things, and I think many have become very confused. So many people have left the church and are far from God. I think we have to have a connection with God in order to see clearly, otherwise we are so easily confused.

      1. Many people I’ve come across don’t see the divide between Democrat and Republican as very wide, which is a flaw in their understanding of the fundamental issues. Also, the issue of abortion and pro-life stuff . . . unfortunately, for many it almost seems to be a tired issue and it is considered closed minded to make that the deciding factor in voting these days. That is a failure to understand the gravity of that issue and I honestly believe that if you don’t get that right, you’re not going to get other things right either. Anyway, this is also a backlash against some of the republicans that were elected last time because some just didn’t do a very good job. I know my area went back to blue because John Faso was a middle of the road republican and just appeared to be wishy washy to everyone. He lost to a Democrat transplant from NYC. Something I didn’t think would happen, but compared to Faso, the newcomer sounded like a straight talker with a genuine and genial character . . . despite clips of his former rapping career trashing the U.S. and blessing Iraq being circulated. So, I really think this loss was a combination of people having only a tenuous grip on fundamental conservative principles and some representatives just being unimpressive to begin with. On the hopeful side, though, I worked this election as a poll worker and my Democrat co-worker, wearing feminist buttons on her hat, told me that she was voting for the Republican governor up against Cuomo. She said she was willing to overlook the other guy’s pro-life position among other things because she just feels that character is so important. So, let that be a lesson to the Republicans . . . middle of the road, trying to please everyone, flip flopping on what you said you’d do . . . does. not. work. Be fearless and upright, honest and hardworking . . . it will gain the respect of those who do not have a firm grip on the fundamental principles. At this point, only a few people are educated well enough to judge firmly based on abstract truths . . . what many people are judging on is the KIND of person they seem to be. Women who are turned off by Trump think he’s not a nice person because of things like the immigration issue. Have you noticed that there is less in the media talk shows about how Trump is going to cause war or economic problems? It’s all about who is nice. The Left is going to use the House to keep up a constant drone of “Trump isn’t nice” in order to drive down his popularity. Trump hasn’t done anything that isn’t ACTUALLY awful, but the constant drone of perception is at work, and it makes people not look any deeper . . . it’s just a well-known ‘fact’ now that Trump is a jerk. By the way, the immigration thing? Let’s let the president do his job of protecting this country and let’s do OUR job of helping those in need. Many people are voting on issues a certain way because they have forgotten that the Government is not SUPPOSED to take care of things that we, specifically, are responsible for. So, “It’s not nice” to exclude people from the U.S. . . . fine, so let’s show how well we can take care of those who legally come in here within our communities FIRST, and then maybe we can let more honest families in!! It’s “nice” to vote to include everyone because it’s easy to do so since for many it doesn’t seem to affect us personally. It’s easy to vote nice based on abstract emotion and pass the buck to the government and then get all preachy when the government doesn’t magically take care of things perfectly. The general understanding of these issues is detached from practical social justice. I mean social justice based on the teachings of the Church. Principle of subsidiarity and whatnot. People are being swayed by abstract emotion because that is how we are trained to think these days. The imagination has been formed since youth to respond to images emotionally without much reflection. The images bring on the emotion, the emotion makes it feel right, and then we decide what is ‘nice’. That is why the media is so powerful. Prudence has given way to the ‘heroism’ of being nice. People are going to give away their rights and freedoms in order to be nice. Oh well. What is needed is general first hand experience of these fundamental conservative principles at work with heroic people leading the way in order for people to see the light.

I suspect the same with many who leave the church, their beliefs change and they follow the liberal themes which aren’t threatening to them. It’s easier to follow then fight for something or someone who presents controversy. Yes the connection with God is a must or confusion will prevail. Confusion creates havoc, following provides peace, even if disguised.

I am surprised at your revelations with regard to suburban women.

But maybe not so surprised. Wasn’t it Eve who was deceived by the evil one? And didn’t she precipitate the Fall by her choice?

Here again the female choice precipitates a fall. But Our Dear Mother will Triunph and make it right as did her son with regard to Adam.

I am so weary already. Lord Help us!

I went to confession to a priest visiting from WA state and he suggested divorce as an option ( I was in a bit of a gripe funk) because the Lord loves me and wants me to be “happy”. I was astounded. I told him that I would not hurt my child and contribute to the decay of society! He then shook his head and told me to say my act of contrition and never gave me a penance!!

I lit a candle for him after I prayed a penance given from past confessions.

Sometimes I am just amazed at what the world has become. It is a battle every single day.

“Last year began the process of everything being revealed. All have chosen their sides. Now begins a year of judgment, in which each shall reap what he has sown;”
Does this mean the “line has been drawn in the sand” … that there is no turning back (to God) now for an individual?

  32. Charlie, it is true. Women voting Democrat because they don’t like how Donald Trump expresses himself at times is truly amazing.

From a womans point of view, Why would we vote to enable the democrats who support mixed sex toilets, where little girls and other vulnerable females are exposed to the risk of molestation.

Also, there seemed to be a lull of perversion and degeneration since the Republicans took control of the USA government. And it was heartening to hear President Trump praise law enforcement for their service and commitment, unlike ex President Obama who seemed to be inciting racial tension on a mass scale. All that seems to have calmed since Pres. Trump came into office. Thank God.

Makes me wonder, was President Trump a chance for America to get back to the blessing of prosperity. Now… maybe as a Nation, America has rejected the goose that lade the golden egg; all for the sake of disordered pleasure, infanticide and hedonism.

From what I hear, schools and colleges seem to brainwash students into believing socialism is the intelligent way forward. Laughable when the whole world can see Venezuala disintegrate under socialism. And that from a country that once was so wealthy and successful.

Mind you it is even worse in the UK. We have a government (elected!) who completely betray their promise to BREXIT if elected. Theresa May is squirming and wriggling to stay in Europe, she is just another snake in the grass. Who would believe her father was a Vicar, who must be turning in his grave to have brought such a two faced liar into the world. IMHO

Also purged senate of flaky (pun intended) senators and put good ones in who owe Trump. Good news for court. Trying to steal GA and Fl won’t work. Liberals always try that stuff, but we are on it and it won’t work. Tucker Carlson thing was blown up. Ten snowflakes with a tambourine and bull horn hardly constitutes the IRA burning and blowing up houses during the troubles in Ireland. Lets just remember that we have had calls on this site for civil war since ’15. I don’t think the comparison to the Bolshevik rev is warranted yet. These guys are duds. 1. Love your presence here, Teddy, and while I agree with your points concerning the seats won and lost, I heartily disagree with your opinion on some other points. As Charlie has written, it’s important to look beneath the mere numbers of gained or lost seats to try to understand the state of our society.

Those people who showed up at the Carlson residence were not fluffy snowflakes at all. They were members of Antifa, a verrrrrrry dangerous force in this country right now. As defined: Antifa is “conglomeration of left wing autonomous, self-styled anti-fascist militant groups in the United States. The principal feature of antifa groups is their use of direct action. They engage in varied protest tactics, which include digital activism, property damage, physical violence, and harassment against those whom they identify as fascist, racist, homophobic, misogynist or on the far-right. Conflicts are both online and in real life. They tend to be anti-capitalist and they are predominantly far-left and militant left, which includes anarchists, communists and socialists. Their stated focus is on fighting far-right and white supremacist ideologies directly, rather than politically.” Such forces were at work in the prerevolutionary times which Charlie named, as well as, additional crisis times in governments throughout the world, such as the days when Mao Zedong and his communist backers overtook China. Antifa types infiltrated the country with violence, murder and mayhem.

I do not see politics as a distraction when defined by, “the way that people living in groups make decisions” and “the ways that governments make rules and laws.” Jesus, Himself, gave us the dictum to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. Archbishop Charles Chaput has written prolifically about the importance of Christian witness to faith in the public square. The very ways we make laws determine if people are protected in practicing their faith or persecuted and repressed. Hardly a distraction, this is essential to living and a God-given right.

With you on concerns for the Church. Praying in solidarity with all here for God’s intervention and that we remain faithful to His calling on our lives with TNRS as a means to do what He tells us to do.

    2. Well Teddy, I have seen you before…in many history books. The average gestation period between the first significant signs of decay and revolution is about 12 years. You have heard no calls for civil war here, only warning that we are stumbling ever closer to it.

You unwittingly make part of my point for me. Many, in such situations, progressively minimize and normalize violent behavior as the ugliness deepens. You say “10” snowflakes. Even the establishment media said there were a “little more than a dozen.” So how many people pounding at your door, voicing threats, and vandalizing both your door and your car are enough to be concerned about? How many conservative officials must be surrounded and harassed and threatened by flash mobs before you will consider it a problem? How many more times must conservative and Christians be shouted down from speaking before you think it might warrant attention? How many more bakers, photographers and florists must be punished or bankrupted by the state before you say enough? In the nearly four years we have been discussing this issue, tell me what year it improved in? It hasn’t – and a big part of my point is that we keep normalizing behavior that once would have gotten people some serious jail time.

I do realize that some people say I am just an alarmist because they truly think that. Others say it because they fear I am right and what it will mean…so they deeply hope I am wrong. I don’t know which you are. If everything just spontaneously smooths out without any real effort on our part, that would be fine with me (though historically unprecedented). People get badly hurt in these situations throughout history, though, because they will not believe it until they are the ones whose door is being pounded on in the night – and then they are completely unprepared. I want people here to pray for the best, prepare for the worst, and work to give effective witness in fidelity to God whatever comes…and not be unprepared to live their faith in all circumstances.

      1. People voicing threats, pounding at the door, vandalizing the front door and car. Hm.

Some years ago I came upon a lovely piece of Desert Ironwood in the greenbelt along the river. Too short for most of the walking sticks I typically fashion, I made it into a good walking stick nonetheless, with the intent of gifting it one Christmas season. I even carved some squirrels on the handhold, as you may recall me mentioning.

You’re not fond of walking sticks, so it sits in the corner beside my bed… within arms reach. Sure, I’ve had it on a hike or two. I fussed over it a bit, carving it to take out some of the slight curvature, boned the handhold myself, and added a pair of squirrels for good measure. It’s great as a walking stick, but spin it upright in the hand and it’s got nearly the perfect balance and heft for other uses. Only after adding antique oil did I realize I also had fashioned a pretty good defensive weapon. No more than a blunt club maybe, but an elegant one if it had to be used as such.

I pray that I can find it a proper home one day to fulfill its intended purpose as a walking stick. If not, I’ve got a good squirrel parable or two in my back pocket before I would consider next steps.

I’m not phased by the yelling, banging on the door, scratching the car and the like if I happen to be the only one in earshot. That’s gonna be answered with the courtesy of a good squirrel parable. Scare or threaten my family, though, and get ready to discover firsthand what a trusty piece of Desert Ironwood is capable of.

If anyone has a better plan, let me know.

          1. Ha, Mick. You would have liked my ole’ Granny. When some transplants from back east moved in next door to her and got chippy over her horses, she took to wearing my Granddad’s six shooters around the back stables… and taking target practice when she saw fit. Only problem, she was in the city limits! ‘Course the police that had to respond loved her instantly.

Heck, if the subversives hellbent on chaos show up at either of our front doors, I’ll just assume the Republic has already fallen.

Folks, get out there and work the neighborhood at every opportunity. Good will is enough, but take pies if needs be.

        2. When I carry my peacemaker, I sometimes think of my grandfather who was a mountie on the Buffalo Police Department, the last crew to ride horses in the city. He never had to draw his service revolver in the line of duty, though.

My little six-shooter has been on my hip or at my bedside for years now. It’s like a familiar old buddy. I’ve never needed it these past 18 years. I was even sucker-punched in Colorado Springs with one concealed on my right hip, but had no thought of using it. There was no real threat. I chuckled at the thought that if I had pulled it, the young guy would have wet himself (Mick: a stainless Kimber 1911 with 5” barrel).

Yesterday, though, while thinking seriously about the possibility of civil unrest, even in South Dakota, I took a moment to contemplate the black little pistol in my hands. Am I prepared to use it? Sure, I can put 3 bullets through the same hole on a paper target at 15 yards, but how about with a human being in front of me? I whispered: “I pray I will never have to use you.” A sobering thought. Maybe it’s easier to strike out with a bullet at some distance rather than strike a person in the head with a club at close range. I don’t know. Either way, using a weapon against another person, even in self-defense, is a violent act….one that might be impossible to ever forget.

          1. Patrick, that Kimber is a good-looking firearm.

Your last paragraph really resonated with me. Every time I go to the range for some target practice, I pray that I never have to fire my weapon at a human being. But I practice just the same, because this mama bear has little cubs counting on her if things go seriously south. But I can’t imagine how anyone could ever forget shooting a bad guy; that sort of thing must stick with you. I pray I never have to find out.

Rest assured, you will always remember. The difference is whether you provided your opponent a way out. David Grossman, (ret. UA Army Col) researched this topic, wrote a book “On Killing” and “Stop teaching our kids to kill” which in my opinion are exceptional in scholarship. I came across this article and watched the embedded video for a moment or two and found it excellant. Perhaps, it is because I sat in Grossman’s presentation for eight hours… on the edge of my seat.

            http://selfdefensetutorials.com/grossman-on-killing-interview/

“…I can put 3 bullets through the same hole on a paper target at 15 yards” Aim small, miss small. Most cops have a difficult time putting rounds on paper no less than in the same hole. Though, after 40 rounds or so, the hole does get bigger:)

For those who think it can’t be done, I’ve seen it and have doen it once or twice, abeit at three yards. It is a great training technique for firearm control.

Anyone interested, inverse a target in place, one shot through the center of the paper. That hole is your target. Shoot in batches of fifty rounds, one shot at a time. Holster after each shot. Complete three to four hundred rounds and call it a day.

Your grouping will demonstrate the deficiencies and allow you to correct. Move the target back double distance each day until you reach 25 yards. In one week, you’ll fire a little over a thousand rounds and be pretty (tired) confident of shot placement, forearm handling etc. Needless to say, a firearm instructor looking over your shoulder is encouraged.

            2. Excellent and appropriate video Sean. VERY interesting analysis about a tough topic.

I’m a huge WWII buff. I’ve seen many videos about a ship in battle being sunk by another with heavy loss of life – as in 1,000 or more. And the response of the winning crew is almost universal: first exhilaration and cheering at scoring a decisive shot, when the enemy ship lists and sinks or just explodes. THEN….. the sobering reality that the destroyed enemy vessel was full of men, fighting courageously just like the victor, men with families. Some are even horrified by what just occurred. Hats will come off as they quietly salute and mourn their fallen opponents.

Same with pilots: they call it a bogey or MIG in combat, but they realize there is a man in the other cockpit as it slams into the ground. One P-51 Mustang pilot said every single day he still sees the face of the terrified Japanese tail-gunner at the moment he killed him where he sat. Another was in a dogfight with a German through some mountains. During the interview, the American pilot wept recounting how the German bailed out at 50 feet and bounced on the ground and up over his wing. And another pilot in the Pacific got so close to a Zero just before shooting him down that he looked the Japanese pilot “dead in the eye”. It lasted just a moment 70 years ago, but the American said if he saw the man on the street today, he’d recognize him.

I imagine that hand-to-hand ground combat is something even more intense.
Killing a fellow human stays with you. (See Sean’s video above!)

Let us pray for our brave men and women who served in combat for our country. 🇺🇸

There is always the pepper spray option.

My wife and I both have our “conceal and carry” license although we never carry, just in case of future events, it is an option. My wife carries pepper spray in her purse and we have a large pepper spray at home in case of home invasion. If pepper spray doesn’t work, I have other options I can fall back on. I pray it never comes to that.

          4. When I ponder being a father, how often I ponder how our roots have shaped us for good or for bad! Thanks for sharing about your grandfather. One of mine carried nothing more than a sturdy ax handle behind the seat in his pickup truck. He and his many siblings grew up on the south side of Chicago in the poor Irish neighborhoods of those days. Rough streets. I know of only one story of him actually using that ax handle, but could recount 100’s more that make me proud of that root! As for that one instance, I’d be proud of that too if he had been.

I know I’ve got a habit of recounting real stories to communicate, but I sense the allegories get grazed over if not completely missed. Ah, my failure as communicator via the written word. Sloppy poetry at best. On to a more purely doing phase as I’m convinced we’ll be following Our Christ in that regard as well.

            1. Here’s a nice page about the Buffalo Mounted Police. In the “class picture”, my grandfather is Robert B.Ball (at 11 o’clock). In the photo with 6 men kneeling in front, he’s number 4 from the left.

              http://www.bpdthenandnow.com/mountedsquad.html

He once chased down a bank robber on foot and nabbed him. The guy stole a few thousand dollars.

I love him very much. He was a dear man, selfless, affectionate, and funny. He always looked to help his neighbor, loved to build houses and work with his hands. He never stopped giving. My Aunt Judy recently told me something about him. She said back when he was dying of cancer in the 80’s, a new priest came to his parish who would often visit him at home (probably also to bring communion). The priest said to her that he felt certain he was in the presence of a saint. He had a strong Catholic faith, and he died young at age 67.

He was married to my now 99-year-old grandmother, Honey.

Thanks for your story about your grandpa, MP. Real men from a different age.

      2. I am concerned that Charlie is exactly right, change starts out slow only to accelerate with momentum when its too late to stop. Political correctness starts out as a whisper, and now we have “microaggression,” “safe spaces,” and any show or attempted discussion of conservative values shunned by universities as policy with use of ordinary pronouns banned.

A mob pounding on your door at night when you are alone is no mere trifling annoyance. Families getting hounded out of restaurants is no mere interruption to public civility. The stage for violence is now systematically established by Maxine Waters, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and other progressive “leaders.” The House will next be conducting numerous politically inspired investigations to feed the mass media with a raft of alleged crimes by Trump and other Republicans, and judging by the voting in Arizona, Florida, and Georgia, many of our citizens, ignorant of history by design of progressive education, will unthinkingly accept accusations as true.

The next economic down turn is in the works too, and because debt is now higher than it was during the 2007-8 Great Recession, this time the damage may be far worse. The incivility now displayed is likely to be magnified by lost jobs and wages, and another crushed housing market with foreclosures.

        1. When you put it that way, Jack Hiller, a little firsthand story/allegory and a mere stick really doesn’t seem to amount to much. What can one person do against such mobs and potential horrors?

Oh. Look to God. Have faith and stand firm. Share hope with others. Think and act in practical terms… one step at a time… the little right in front of oneself.

That was clearly the plan for many here from the moment we first heard it and it has resounded and strengthened again and again over the course of our lifetimes.

  35. A suburban-Atlanta woman on the street election story:

My husband and I were at a dinner party last summer. This was with a group of all Christian couples (we were the only Catholics). The topic came up of “goat yoga.” Yes, I typed that right, “goat yoga.” The women were laughing and showing pictures of the yoga sessions to each other. I am not a fan of any kind of yoga, so I had never heard of such a thing so I proceeded to ask them about it. It is literally women doing yoga on the floor with goats climbing on their backs! Yes, goats! I exclaimed to the group that this is paganistic and demonic. Why would any self-respecting woman do this? The group just laughed and said it was just a fun and a trendy thing to do. Well, a growing group of women around here in a wealthy suburb of Atlanta think it is cute, stress-relieving and freeing. I still think it is insanity and quite honestly, demonic. This is going to sound odd, but this conversation at a dinner party summed up the election for me. I told my family, just before the election, that if things go sour here in Georgia, it will because of the goat yoga mom mentality. They represent to me the many who are no longer seeing the evil behind deceptively trendy things. Well, things didn’t go so hot in Georgia. We don’t have a certified governor-elect, vote tally keeps changing and lawsuits are flying.

So many suburban mothers and their children suffer severely from affluenza and prosperity gospel thinking. I think they truly believe when they support certain ideologies they are being charitable and sympathetic to the masses (those who live outside their affluent communities). This is the deceptive trend that I think the election showed. It also shows our ignorance of world history. I truly believe these women think politics and policy will not impact their individual lives. They believe their material wealth makes them untouchable or safe. Another big irony in all of this is many of these women are afforded this lifestyle because they are married to men who hold very capitalistic jobs, yet they vote socialism for the country. They do not see this connection. I keep asking myself – Why can’t these women see it? The deception? It is literally killing their country and the souls of their children.

I try my best to not become despairing at all the inroads satanic deception has made in the American family, but it truly is hard. When you have younger children you have to constantly navigate through this demonic seduction, it is exhausting. However, I just get up each day pray and keep fighting. What else can you do?

Thank you, Charlie, for your insight. I have been waiting to hear what you thought since the election.

By the way, if you don’t believe me here is a link to “goat yoga” in one of the richest suburbs of Atlanta.

    1. Every move in yoga was made to honor thousand of Hindu gods. I do not think that a Christian could do yoga at all without opening oneself to spirits that are not of Christ. There are all sorts of exercises one can do without taking the risk. I always tell my fellow Catholics this and they just think I am alarmed over nothing. They say it is just exercise. I reply that when I make the sign of the cross over my body, everyone knows that I am Christian, and I expect that Christ is pleased. If one follows the Hindu practice, what is that action telling the Hindu spirit world ( which I do not think one could call Christian in any way) ? …. The goats add another level of oddity.

    2. D, you are wise to see this nonsensical practice as paganistic and demonic.

As with my encounter with wiccans, the satan wants those not participating to see it as playful folly….but you see it for what it really is: evil. Sounds like you have the gift of Discernment of Spirits. Bravo for not holding back and stating your view before the other Christians who should know better. So much for dinner parties with like-minded Christians.

On this Wikipedia page are two symbols of the devil and — WHAT DO YOU KNOW? — they both have goat heads. (Don’t worry…. possession is not possible by looking at, but do learn something of your enemy’s ways.)

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baphomet

      https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/baphomet-sabbatic-goat-satanic-symbol-meaning

This is precisely what I was talking about above regarding Beyoncé, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and the others. The goat — amid the other satanic iconography of humans dressed as animals — seems to have a prominent place in many of their pop music videos. These men and women have opened doors that should have remained shut, and then they *knowingly* propagate the devil’s message through images or by encouraging others to participate something.

But Goat Yoga?! That’s not remotely subtle. Sometimes the satan is so obvious with is tactics.

  38. Great article, Charlie. But man, is it sobering.

I too found the results of election night to be underwhelming and unnerving. I was hoping we’d take the House and more of the Senate, because that would ideally send a message of repudiation to the authoritarian left. But no. Instead ,the results leave me anxious for the 2020 election- if we even have an election.

Case in point: I live in Georgia and am flabbergasted that Stacy Abrams finished within striking distance of Brian Kemp. Everything about the lady screams “socialist dystopia” and yet she got almost 50% of the vote. Insane.

I was telling my father-in-law that the reason many young people today embrace socialism is because they are historically illiterate, but also because being taken care of is all they know. They’ve never had to pay bills, hold a job, or actually do anything on their own. Ever. Anytime they need something, their parents or whoever simply pay on their behalf. Then they get to college and have to face the reality that they will have debt/bills to pay, and this is around the same time they’re old enough to vote. And they’re like, “Well, my whole life I’ve never had to pay for anything. And I can’t afford it now. So yeah, we need a bigger government to socialize all this. Who cares if my taxes go up? Taxes aren’t that big a deal, right?”

And so they vote for the left in droves, not for any moral or historical reason, but because they’re ignorant, they have no money, they’ve never had a job, they don’t have families to provide for, and no historical frame of reference to learn from, so they just think a massive government with total power to tax the crap out of them will fix all their financial problems.

“The state will be my new parents,” they tell themselves, “and I’m fine with that, because my real parents pay for everything.”

As a high school teacher, this is what I see/hear a lot from my students. They fail to realize that along with your “free” healthcare and college and everything else comes a government that will brutally punish you for wrong-think. Not to mention obliterate your mind, conscience, and soul into what they think it should be.

Anyway, I thought this article was gonna say the Democrats had perpetrated election fraud and would be held accountable for it. That the reason your pre-election data did not match up with the result was because of Democrat manipulation of the votes. Which I still hope for, and which we are seeing n Arizona, Florida, and Georgia. Elite Democrats cheating is better than the alternative: more and more Americans are embracing leftist authoritarianism. My only hope is that which I see and hear in young people around me: they are nice and mostly normal, just abysmally ignorant. However, they have eyes, and many of them will prayerfully see the insanity of the left for what it is and want no part of it.

One last thing: anyone who says “Trump needs to tone down the rhetoric” or “he’s alienating women by his language” etc. needs to wake up. Seriously. That’s like criticizing the policeman for raising his voice at you when you’re house is under attack. He’s trying to protect you, not your feelings. We literally have a political party that riots in the streets, terrorizes civilians, shuts down free speech, marches around like Hitler’s Brownshirts, and celebrates sexual disorder and child murder and you’re going to complain about Trump talking about barbed wire in an offensive way?

    Give me a break.

It’s that kind of mentality that lead to a two term Obama (“He almost destroyed the country, but hey, at least I wasn’t offended!”) and that will eventually lead to the gulag. And it’s also why a benevolent dictator is necessary to save our country. The rot is too deep in the Left, the power-hungry insanity too deeply entrenched. You can’t play by the rules when the other side refuses to. The parallels between Trump and Lincoln have been made before, but just to put it bluntly: Lincoln had to suspend certain liberties to save the nation, and Trump (or whoever the benevolent dictator is) will have to do the same.

And the last thing such a person will need is Americans crying over brusque language while they fend off the wolves on our behalf.

You have stated it perfectly what has been going around in my mind. Except I have been busy cutting firewood and haven’t had the time to put it in words. There is no way Trump is going to back down, the harder they hit, the harder he will strike back.

Sessions being fired one day after elections, Whitaker sworn in hours later. Do some research on Whitaker, the Dems have a right to be worried, and they are worried, that’s why there screaming. I think it could get very interesting in the next couple of months if Whitaker starts acting.

Still, for our nation to return to God, things are going to have to get a lot worse. A whole lot worse! Think national debt. When things go down, it will get ugly. When that happens, if they freeze credit, there will be a subsistence crises. You can have all the gold and silver in the world but if you can’t buy food because there isn’t any to buy. Gold and Silver won’t do you any good. Better to grow and raise your own. (or shoot, fish or gather!)

As men, we are required by God to protect and provide for our families, don’t wait until it is to late. Well, back to cutting firewood.

      1. My career was in the Dept of Defense with a Top Secret clearance for well over 25 years. Any “minor” infractions of security regs were always dealt with, by law, severely. What Hillary Clinton did with her negligence of email and servers was astounding. By design, security law does not include “motivation” as any consideration for careless, yet Comey waved prosecution on the grounds that HRC did not intend to breech security.

If Whitaker does his job right, HRC will be prosecuted for possibly the worst security violations in history, and Hillary and Bill will be prosecuted for pay-to-play corruption, with Uranium One implicating Mueller and Rosenstein for, at a minimum, culpable negligence.

Top it off with some necessities to get through some hard times and “Pray for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary” Amen…

I find it interesting that the Democrats are all concerned about the “rule of law” when it comes to Trump, but when it comes to themselves…

  40. This really, really stinks:

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/vatican-bars-action-by-u-s-bishops-on-sex-abuse-reforms-at-conference-1542043668

So, they want the bishops to go on retreat and only think about the sexual abuse scandal, and then wait until February for a global summit? So input from bishops from Africa and Asia can help guide the U.S. bishops? Or is this to obfuscate the problem in political fashion come February?

More stalling from Rome. What an unusual directive.

What does the “Vatican” have up his sleeve?

  41. This president has threatened Roe v Wade to the consternation of so called upper class women which is why I think with the nomination ot Kavnaugh they went rogue, as well as the fact that they do not like confrontation which is the hallmark of Trump..That screws up their whole soccer mom mentality. their manicured nails and lawn and their perfect snowflake world. Dan Proft had the same analysis as Charlie and the same thing happened here in Illinois.

  42. Last night I saw two videos that buoyed my flagging spirits which only the truth-reality and nearness of Christ can do. Roy Shoeman was a Jewish Harvard professor when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him and now he’s a Catholic on fire with the Holy Spirit. The talks occurred at Eucharistic Congresses in New Zealand and Winnipeg. They’re on YouTube under “Blessed Virgin Mary appears to Harvard professor”.

    1. Yes, TOF! The links have been shared twice here and many positive comments have been made. What God and Our Lady have given Roy Shoeman combined with his fiat to share is a sign of hope!

  43. Brother Charlie, none of this really can surprise us, after all, our beloved Lord and Savior said that in the end, “white will become black and black will become white.” We are most definitely witnessing that very fact before our very eyes, wouldn’t you agree?

  44. From Catholic News Agency this afternoon:
Cardinal DiNardo: Vatican directive came from Congregation for Bishops

Baltimore, Md., Nov 12, 2018 / 01:00 pm (CNA).- The directive not to vote on the proposals which had been expected to form the basis for the response of the Church in the US to the sexual abuse crisis came from the Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston said Monday.

The president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops was speaking at the first press conference held at the bishops’ autumn General Assembly in Baltimore Nov. 12.

He indicated that the directive came not from Pope Francis, but directly from the Congregation for Bishops.

Bishop Christopher Coyne of Burlington, who spoke at the press conference, told CNA that he did not know whether the American members of the congregation played a role in the decision.

The American members of the Congregation for Bishops are Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago, and Donald Wuerl, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington.

A source close to Wuerl told CNA that he did not believe the cardinal had been involved in the decision.

DiNardo had announced the decision earlier in the day to “a visibly surprised conference hall.”

DiNardo said that the Holy See insisted that consideration of a code of conduct for bishops and a lay-led body to investigate bishops accused of misconduct be delayed until the conclusion of a special meeting called by Pope Francis for February.

Coyne told CNA that the bishops would also suspend their vote on establishing a third-party reporting system for complaints about episcopal conduct.

The Congregation for Bishops asked for the delay so that bishops around the world can be “on the same page,” and learning from each other, the bishops said. The importance of further precision in canon law was also raised.

Joining DiNardo and Coyne at the press conference was Bishop Timothy Doherty of Lafayette in Indiana.

Dinardo said he found Rome’s decision to be “quizzical,” and suspected the Congregation for Bishops thought the US bishops might be moving too quickly.

“I’m wondering if they could turn the synodality back on us. My first reaction was, this didn’t seem so synodical; but maybe the Americans weren’t acting so synodically either. But it was quizzical to me, when I saw it.”

DiNardo said the bishops have not lessened their resolve for action, and that they are not pleased by the Holy See’s decision. He indicated that they will continue to push for action on the sex abuse crisis: “we’re disappointed, because we’re moving along on this.”

Speaking to how Catholics can trust their leaders, he asked that they retain faith in the bishops’ commitment to reform, watching their efforts. He acknowledged that people have a right to scepticism, but also to hope.

The cardinal said he had proposed an apostolic visitation to deal with the problem, but that Rome had disagreed with that approach.

While acknowledging their disappointment in the decision from Rome, the bishops also spoke of the importance of their own obedience. DiNardo said they were responsible to be attentive to the Holy Father and his congregations, and Bishop Coyne said bishops are by nature collegial, “so when the Holy See asks us to work in collegiality, that’s what we do.”
