On Sunday, September 20, we will host a virtual retreat via a global ZOOM meeting. It will begin at 5 pm Eastern Time, 4 pm CT, 3 pm MT, and 2 pm PT. So it will be early afternoon on the West Coast and late afternoon on the East Coast.
We will cover many things. Among those will be the status of the CORAC Handbook, which has changed incredibly since I first nearly finished it several years ago. We will discuss what we are called to as this “global civil war fought on cultural lines” fully enters its final state. We will talk about why – and how -we must learn to walk on water to get to the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart. As Shakespeare once said, “The problem is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” As Pogo put it in equally blunt and colorful terms, “We have met the enemy – and he is us.”
During the first part when I am yammering on, our Executive Director, Michael Murray (affectionately known here as MP) will scour comments and choose some to bring up and invite into the discussion. The battle with Iran has become a sort of background noise. I have had several people say they see how things are going by where gas prices are each day. I find it rather interesting that this is the modern version of siege warfare. In medieval times, siege warfare was common. An occupying force would surround a city, cutting it off from all outside contact and supply until it finally surrendered. The advantage of siege warfare was that it resulted in very little loss of life. The problem was that it required a great deal of patience, going on for months…sometimes years before it was finally settled. The besieged waited in hopes that some outside force would appear to rescue it. Those who made the siege worked to prevent that and starve the besieged into surrender.
Right now the U.S. has cut Iran off economically, diplomatically, and physically from most of the rest of the world, after destroying its military capability. Ironically, the forces of tyranny in Iran are hoping that Democrats will win the midterm elections and then lift the siege, restoring them to full power in their much reduced state.
I suspect that, however the elections turn out, America’s role in the battle will be largely over by the end of the year. If Republicans prevail, Iranian despots will know they cannot prevail – or even survive – much longer. Their thoughts will turn to how to get out of the country before the hangman’s noose of a battered, but enraged population finds them. If the Democrats win, the immediate pressure will quickly be off. But that will not be the end of it.
Donald Trump has badly decimated the military capability of the Iranian mullahs, whatever the New York Times and the rest of the Pravda media say. The regime is badly enfeebled. In its efforts to force other Arab nations to support it (by attacking them – a weird strategy to garner support. But hey, it worked with Iran’s unarmed populace) Iran has infuriated other Arab nations, countries who have long considered it a problematic trouble-maker in the Middle East. With its weakened capacity combined with the animus it has triggered in most other Arab and Muslim states, the regime is a dead man walking. Democratic diplomatic appeasement will prolong the battle while changing who will strike the deathblow to the maniacal fanatics who highjacked Persia way back in 1979.
The Islamic regime is reduced to choosing its destructor: a quiet surrender to the U.S., with hopes of getting out before the Persian hangman comes, or destruction at the hands of other Arab states around it – most of which are, indeed, Muslim, but few of which are institutionally and murderously insane. The only reason for them to push for a Democratic victory is to buy more time to get out of Baghdad before doom comes calling.

One of my least favorite classic novels is Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. The craftsmanship of the novel is spectacular. The choice of words used to describe the action are fully calibrated to match the mood and narrative. Few novels have been so brilliantly constructed. But the characters run the gamut from repulsive to conniving to pathetic. None are very likable.
I have come, lately, to think it weirdly prophetic. First published in 1856 in France, within living memory of the depredations of the French Revolution, it saw clearly the vicious vapidity that increasingly marks our own times. Emma Bovary, the title character, is a vain, silly woman who thinks it is life’s duty to entertain her and treat her as a princess while offering nothing in return. She cheats on her devoted (if mediocre) husband, neglects and resents her daughter, is given to moments of guilty sentimentality without any resolve to reform, and it all ends in disaster for her entire family and herself. Entirely because of her vain romantic fantasies and utter self-absorption.
Though only around 350 pages, it was still a tough read for me because it is so depressing. Yet I think it truly a story for our times. And a big part of what I work at is to try to spare us from the catastrophes which will be the bitter fruit of our own shallow, self-absorbed fantasies.
Vanity of vanities! There is nothing new under the sun.

Charlie , Charlie ? Iran has the full support and backing of China, Russia, Pakistan, India , BRICS and the non anglo saxon centred world … which is more than half the entire world population… it has been under US Western siege and humiliating sanctions since the 1970s…. it has been under arbitrary military attack by Israel and its subversive Mossad infiltration along with CIA MI6 and all the western 3 letter agencies you can name. It may indeed be hit by nuclear weapons by Israel and USA backed by western diplomatic indifference… but that will simply ensure the GCC and Israel will also be left looking entirely like Ghaza, totally uninhabitable ….and the ´chastisement´ so long prophesied will have, as Karen Carpenter mused, only just begun. It´s existential for Iran Persia who have been around for 2,600 years compared to 250 USA. I hope i´m wrong but i cannot say i think you are right. God have mercy on all our souls…

thank you …. i have followed Charlie for many years and very much respect his insights and analysis usually, except on the definition of slaughter of innocents in Ghaza not being genocide…. in this case i hope i am wrong but not necessarily that Charlie is right…. we in the West have got to recognise that anglo saxon centred hegemony days are numbered… after Nagasaki Hiroshima , USA again possibly resorting to nuclear strikes on intransigent no surrender perceived enemies will simply remove all claims to western moral superiority… after all it was the British and USA who removed the democratically elected Iranian President Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953 when he declared that Iran wanted to have control of its natural resources … his western sponsored replacement was a brutal authoritarian who directly caused by his brutality, pressure for the ´revolution´ and the installation of the Clerical Islamist ultra conservative state . Since then Iran has been sanctioned, besieged, humiliated, attacked on all fronts by the evicted Western hegemonies and the Israeli state because it cannot be bought, threatened, coerced into submission. We are now at the threshold of an Israeli US Western fomented WW3 as a direct result of the failure of 75 years of failed siege. There is an estimated 300k Christians and upwards of 25k Jews in Iran living freely and respected7protected by the state, yet the oldest Jewish temple in Tehran was targeted deliberately by Israel because they are the wrong kind of Jews it seems. Tehran has a beautiful Catholic cathedral dedicated to ´Maryam´ and many many conversions are being reported from Iran. Will this Cathedral, as in Nagasaki, strangely be the epicentre of another horrendous nuclear strike? Iran and Iranians are not the monsters the Western governments and their media have demanded we all believe them to be since we got evicted in 1979…. this is one siege that will not end well for the entire world if USA Israel and the West follow through on the desire of some insane psychopathic war mongers to ´annihilate´ a 3000 year old civilisation because it refuses to genuflect to Western hegemony interests and Zionist ( not ´Jewish´ ) delusions of a Greater Israel by elimination of all Muslim neighbours who refuse to bend the knee to their agendas . I think my pessimistic views from few months ago come into fruition. I was rebuked here few months ago the war with Iran is a quick military intervention. Here we are, past 7 months and situation getting much worse with Iran-backed Houthis now seizing the Bab el-Mandab Strait through which approximately 5–9% of global seaborne oil trade (crude oil + petroleum products) passes every year. With almost doubled gas prices compared to pre-war prices, due to blokade of the Strait of Hormuz,so now we might rather seek to enjoy these doubled prices before they go up over the next months. Iran and Russia few weeks ago signing agreement to rebuild/expand civil nuclear capabilities is another questionable accomplishment.Trump promised at most 100 day war. Now he promises war will end shortly after mid-term elections. Trump might be good at chess, but was not aware that Persians mastered, or some say invented chess many centuries ago.

The Iranian conflict has very little to do with fuel prices in Europe right now, though it has been a convenient means of shifting blame by European officials. The primary problems for you are two-fold: 1) the intentional degradation of European industrial capacity, particularly as it relates to fuel supply and refining capacity and 2) the Ukraine war, which has now degraded Europe’s primary supplier of diesel, which is Russia.
Given this comment – and that of ‘magnificently..’ below before it, I am going to publish a piece today or tomorrow giving a deeper analysis. While ‘magnificently…’ adopts a scolding, pedantic tone in his comment, he starts with several absurdities – that Russia, China and most of the rest of the world are foursquare behind Iran. Sheesh, not even the majority of the Muslim community in the Middle East is behind Iran. The second absurdity is that the American response to Iranian provocations since the 1970’s is, itself, the provocation. While I agree our approach to Iran, up until this year, has been largely feckless, it is downright delusional to suggest that if we just would not have responded to Iranian depravities at all, everything would be sweetness and light. But ‘magnificently…’ has posted here frequently before under a different screen name and his main object is to prove that Israel and the Jews are responsible for nearly every bad thing in the world. I have little patience for that particularly nasty hobby horse. But I figure it is time to do a deep dive.
Geo-politics is like a machine that has a hundred moving parts. If you are aware of all or most of them, you will still miss the mark sometimes. If you only have a grasp of three of them, you will miss the mark every time and by a lot more. I will enlarge on that in a separate column within a day or two.
