When Does Christ Call us to Reject Legitimate Authority, Legitimately Exercised?

By Charlie Johnston

Missoula, Montana –

Never.

Period.

I wrote a week or so ago about my very pleasant experience last year touring the grounds of the Mission of Divine Mercy near San Antonio. The people were solid and faithful and focused on Christ, it seemed to me. I liked them. I also noted that, at that time, San Antonio Archbishop Gustavo Garcia Siller, had not made a public statement on the purported messages from heaven the Mission has recently published. Now, he has. In addition to the statement, Abp. Garcia Siller issued a formal decree.

A big issue of contention is the statement from the messages that, “…you have allowed the usurper to sit on the chair of My Peter – he who is carrying out the Great Treason that will leave My Church desolate…” I initially interpreted that as meaning the satan has fully infiltrated the Vatican and is influencing, sometimes even directing, error. Abp. Garcia Siller interpreted it as being personally directed at Pope Francis, certainly a good faith interpretation. Reading through correspondence between the Archbishop and the Mission, it is clear that the Mission interprets it as the Archbishop does. This is a BIG red flag for me.

Whether or not anyone accepts the authenticity of my visitations and visions, it has been the experience of my entire lifetime. I can speak with some knowledge on such things and the rules and parameters of them. In over 60 years of such experiences, only once have I ever heard heavenly beings speak with raw contempt of a specific person. Always there is sorrow, and often pity, but the sole time there was raw contempt was startling – and not as nakedly contemptuous as this interpretation is. Heavenly beings need not speak with raw contempt, for they know that Christ is sovereign. Whatever individuals do will be used to carry out His sovereign plan, regardless of the person’s intention. The sorrow and pity is for the potential loss of heaven for the person. Heavenly beings do not react with fear and loathing to the bad activities of men, only sorrow and pity. (The one case where mild disgust was exhibited to me involved a person who, with full knowledge of what he was doing, chose the satan over God. Thankfully, I have good reason to believe the person involved has repented.) It could still be that my interpretation is correct, but the Mission insists that it specifically targets Pope Francis and the Archbishop is taking them at their word. If their interpretation is correct, then this is a false message.

As regular readers know, I am not an enthusiast of Pope Francis, but I am not an enthusiast for trying to make a bad situation out to be a super-duper bad one that gives me license to violate Christ’s commands. And that is what this is.

In its response to Abp. Garcia Siller, the Mission says it is obeying God rather than men. That is the feeble dodge of people who have become unhinged by their own grief or anger. It is also a failure of trust in Christ. Some suggest that the Archbishop is a “woke” Bishop. That is irrelevant. The only question is whether determinations on such things are within the local ordinary’s legitimate authority. The answer is a simple yes. That has nothing to do with whether the Bishop is right or not; such determinations are disciplinary rather than doctrinal. Many great saints have been suppressed for a time – and they were obedient to legitimate authority, legitimately exercised. Their obedience proved them – and Christ, who always ultimately gets His way, justified them – more than a few times to the joy of those who initially suppressed them.

The hierarchy was initiated by Christ, Himself. There is NO situation in which He would say that something is so important that you must disobey His prior command. None. To pretend such is to pretend that God can err. To obey your Bishop’s lawful command, lawfully given IS to obey Christ.

Let me underscore how vital this is to me. My Archbishop allows me to speak and to write. He forbids me to do so in public presentations on Catholic property in the Archdiocese of Denver. If an apparition of Christ appeared publicly in Church in Denver and commanded me to speak publicly there I would refuse, even though all could see and hear Him. Why? Because it could only be a test of my obedience to the hierarchy He set up or a devil playing at being Christ. I KNOW what Scripture says; I KNOW who my Archbishop is; but I can only believe who an apparition is – and I am not so childishly foolish as to believe I cannot be fooled by the devil. Nor am I so lacking in trust that I can be made to believe that the only way Christ can prevail is if I defy His clear Scriptural commands.

That does not mean I have to do whatever my Bishop says. If he tells me what kind of car I must drive (or, for that matter, what shots I must take) I am free to ignore him. But when he speaks from his legitimate authority with a legitimate command, to obey him is to obey Christ. When He went up with Mary and Joseph after the temple, Scripture records that Christ was obedient to them. Not that He pretended obedience, but that He was obedient. If God, Himself, in His Incarnation, was obedient to the people He placed in authority over Himself, how could any of us claim to be imitating Christ in our disobedience?

There are more than a few cases where I have encountered people who I believed had started having credible locutions. Some react properly with awe and a determination to get it right, knowing what fragile vessels they are to carry such divine treasures. Many, though, decide they are suddenly experts on the mind of God and master of all they survey. I know that kindergartners love to play at grandeur, but this is a deadly dangerous place to play at such vanity. It can quickly destroy any usefulness they might ever have. I understand the impulse. After I first understood the nature of these things when I was a boy of seven, it was all cool and fun. A heavenly emissary would tell me something and so it would turn out to be. What’s not to like? And surely I was special. But after a couple of years, it took a hard turn. Things that I was told would match the specific words I was given, but would not be at all as I expected. When warned of danger ahead for a specific person, I was often directed NOT to tell them. In the early days I violated that more than a couple of times – and the result was always worse than the original danger I was shown. Learning to trust and obey God often violated every human instinct I had. But putting me through that discipline taught me to have real trust that Christ has this rather than a petulant trust that would only stand firm so long as He did it my way. Right now, as I see all the hair-on-fire takes of so many purported mystics I am profoundly grateful for all the decades of training I have had, despite all the tears, frustrations, fears, and sacrifices involved. Until you have been tossed around and knocked on your rear end by the phenomena you have not begun to be mature in these things.

Understand that the devil, the king of liars, often surrounds the central lie he needs you to believe with an escort of truths in order to give you confidence in the lie. Obedience to lawful authority, lawfully given is the guard rail God gives us to keep us from going off the cliff to our destruction.

As I said, I like the people at the Mission of Divine Mercy and respect their dedication to the faith. I pray that they will reconsider their decision on  obedience to legitimate authority. If not, as pious as they are, they will be useful neither to men nor to God.

Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Georgia) hearing Investigating Black Market Baby Organ Harvesting on Tuesday was gripping. It included 18 minutes of previously unseen video footage of abortionists speaking candidly. Some of the video was redacted to hide faces and names of the abortionists, but it comes from the trove that San Francisco Federal Judge William Orrick ordered suppressed. Orrick has no authority to suppress it when displayed by Congress. Watch this and ask yourself why Orrick suppressed any of it, other than that he is an enthusiastic supporter of abortion. The hearing does not begin until the 3:37 mark in this video, so pull ahead to avoid the dead air and elevator music.

  1. Excellent, Charlie. Reminds me of how consistently you have been expressing in these days that gem of wisdom from Proverbs: “Truth will stand the test of time.” Joining you in prayer for the people at the Mission of Divine Mercy.

That makes it sound very easy to distinguish betweeen legitimate and illegitimate authorities and commands. But a lot of what goes on today is not very clear. Did Pope Francis really have the legitimate right to forbid priests to say the Latin Mass, even in private? If a bishop tells people to stand (not kneel) during the consecration, was that a legitimate command or not? In real life, there are lots of areas where legitimacy of authority or command are not very clear. Criteria for how to tell them apart would be helpful.

    1. There is a substantial body of work on the question you ask, not to mention Canon Law. I get that not everyone studies it, but if a difficult issue comes up, they can. On matters of private revelation, it IS easy. That IS within the local Bishop’s purview.

Pope Francis DOES have the disciplinary authority to suppress the Latin Mass. I don’t think it is a prudent use of that authority – and ultimately I don’t think it will stand. But he does have that authority. When the Tridentine Mass was first promulgated outside of Italy, there were over 300 styles of Mass in common use – and the sitting Pope suppressed nearly all of them to make the Tridentine Mass truly universal. That was, in my opinion, a good use of that authority. Suppressing the Latin Mass is, in my opinion, a bad use of that authority. But the Pope does have that authority by long practice.

A local Bishop CAN give such an order IF it does not violate a universal rubric or if he gets a special dispensation from the Vatican.

Where we get in trouble is when people just make it up based on how they feel. The made-up claim that we must always do whatever a Priest says is nonsense and I have known it to be nonsense since my conversion – or that we must never criticize a cleric. That latter played a BIG role in the clerical abuse scandals. So is the claim that if an order violates my sensibility, it is not binding. That, too, is nonsense. There are objective criteria. There are also difficult cases – but rather than basing it on our emotions we should do the work of studying to find out what we are obligated to and what we are not.

This is an easy case. Both the Bishop and the Mission agree that the Mission is being disobedient. The Mission just says these messages are too important to be obedient about. While I am generally favorably disposed towards the content of the messages (with a somewhat different interpretation of them), they are NOT news to anyone and they give no new information that changes everything. Basically, they are opinions – most of which I share. Publicly promoting them as being from heaven is subject to the decision of the local ordinary, period.

A decade ago, Locutions to the World was all the rage. I agreed with about 80% of what was said in them, but I knew from when I first read them that they were not from heaven – and said so repeatedly. I softened it with some friends who were enthusiasts by saying, “That is not Our Lady. It may be Meryl Streep trying to play Our Lady, but it is not Our Lady.”

Saying something is from heaven gives it extra authority – and when some people feel something strongly they often say that without warrant to give THEIR words extra authority. It is for the local ordinary to determine whether it is or not – or whether it can be promulgated for the time being without such a final determination.

My friend, in these terrible times, one of the devil’s most useful tools is to say things that we agree with to get us to swallow the error embedded within. Don’t let your feeling be your guide when you have resources you can turn to. The criteria are already there. Few take the time to study them in any depth.

    2. Who are we to judge? I may not agree with things the Holy Father has done but the constant harping and criticizing him is not fruitful. Pray for him. Jesus demands mercy from ALL of us for ALL of us. The other thing that irks me is the constant harping on the Royal Family. All families have problems and disagreements. Theirs is made 1000 times worse by the evil press. My goodness, haven’t William and Harry suffered enough losing their mother? What about their poor children? Are we going to allow the press to damage them as well? May God bless them all. Let’s all look at our own heart and families and make some amends. Give Kate space to heal. Leave these poor precious children alone. Wake up please to the world we are creating.

      1. Welcome to commenting, Gwen. I’m grateful for those who have pointed to the grievous errors of Pope Francis while writing and speaking about these problems in light of Christ’s Church and His teachings. Consider the children in the past who were abused by priests, went home to tell of the horrors and were slapped and spanked for dare saying those terrible things about Father, thus denying those kids the assistance and care which would foster their healing. That silence was not mercy at all; and it further deeply harmed the souls and psyches of the sick priests who were then allowed to continue harming the children, themselves and Mother Church. We have a gaslighting, abusive Pope. To ignore this without judging with righteous judgement (the errant behaviors, not the heart of the any person) as we’re called to do, is to become co-dependents participating in our own abuse while doing nothing to protect and defend the faithful. Indeed, we continue to pray for this Pope, our Church, our country and the whole world.

        1. I totally agree. Mercy without justice is not healing. The astonishing thing is how the Lord stoops down to heal us when we are so broken. The choice is my friend’s. Radical trust or radical trust with prudence? I am nothing without the Lord and care not one bit for praise or recognition. I care about the children. I bow my to friend’s authority. He belongs to Our Lady. I paid a heavy price to say this and I accept it. Great is His faithfulness!

  4. Charlie, I appreciate this post so much! People often get mired in side issues, either not wanting to address, or not realizing that they are missing, the main point. The title of this post says it all. The sin of the ages–disobedience to legitimate authority, exercised legitimately–began in the garden of Eden; we still reap the consequences and have to be watchful for the tendency to “decide for myself.”

  6. Very timely post Charlie. Thank you so much. There is so much “deception” in the world right now. My discernment has been on overdrive. I thank you profusely for your direction. I was already beside myself with the writings of Luisa Peraccata that Father James Mawdsley has exposed on YT. I had never read the Volumes (my bad), I only read what was posted online by “Catholics” I thought could be trusted. If I had read all the highlighted parts that Father Mawdsley exposed, I never would have followed such deception. Just sickening.

Thank you also for posting the MTG and Daleidan video. I was unable on Tuesday to tune in. I’ve worked in prolife for many years and also attended David’s court hearings in SF, so none of the evidence shocked me……however, our governments lack of concern for innocent preborn babies, disgusts me. This long holocaust must end. I thank MTG for at least helping to move this information to those that need to wake up. St. Theresa Benedicta a Cruce, intercede for us. End Abortion now.

    1. Perhaps just start with reading the “24 hours of the passion”.

Daniel O’Connor has a video (Updates, Clarifications and Responses)

      beginning at 25:24

“when you put yourself in an intellectual posture wherein you will always just find some way to write off the actions of God as demonic, even proven Miracles, clearly fulfilled Prophecies, canonizations of the promoters of the phenomenon question Church approvals, Avalanches of good and holy fruits all of which Louisa has and if you’re willing to just write all that off immediately as demonic certainly you’ve shown us that you’ve shut a door in your heart.”…

Basically O’Conner is saying that the writings shouldn’t be interpreted in the meaning of our present society.

or just go straight to what the bishops say:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvGjYCyIr4w

        1. The question remains, SanSan: Is Fr. Mawdsley using a poor translation? The Vatican has released a book about Luisa: The Sun of my Will Luisa Piccarreta An ordinary life outside the ordinary. What will become of this publication? Will the suspension of the cause for Luisa’s canonization be temporary or permanent? Only God knows.

I will note, jeslyou, your comments mostly contain excerpts from Luisa’s Volumes or material related to her. It may well be time to let these rest. If they are from God, they, too, will stand the test of time and He will vindicate Luisa and her Volumes, allegedly filled with dialogues with the Lord. Perhaps, most important to consider is that we are not a site established to promote our favorite visitations and/or messages. Our minds, hearts, prayers and energy must be focused on what we are now living, what God is doing and the next rights steps to which He is calling each of us.

          1. The Church can’t just stop those that are following a certain message if She is to allow that message the time it needs to discern if it is truly from God or not. If we are to “test everything and keep what is good” that testing takes time. Even very wonderful events and saints have been condemned for a time and not only by bad actors. Sometimes God allows great strife to occur before they are fully recognised by the Church. God’s timing is perfect and great spiritual happenings behind the scenes may not be recognised until years, or even centuries, later. St Joan of Arch is one example.

When the Church does not following through with the canonization of a seer it doesn’t necessarily mean it has no merit and She allows time to see if the message remains viable. This may take a very long time because the message may be for a local event or just a personal revelation.

We must remember–every person in heaven is a “Saint” but not every saint in heaven is canonized!

          2. You are very kind and wise Beckita.

Actually all of her writings truly do fit the theme of acknowledging God, taking the next right step and I would say loving one another.

            1. Indeed they do, jeslyou, when those who are teaching or speaking about Luisa’s Volumes are doing so from a platform of a solid understanding of Church teaching. But then, so do many other particular messages given as private revelation connect with the core message promoted here, but we don’t see constant postings of these additional sources. Why? Because we’re not a site dedicated to sharing private revelation, however beautiful the messages may be. Luisa’s Volumes also encompass obedience to Christ’s Church and in this time of the suspension of her cause for canonization, it is also fitting to dial it back with Luisa. There are many places on the internet and via Zoom that one can meet with like-minded people who wish to delve into studying the spirituality of Living in the Divine Will. We’re not that place here.

            1. God bless you, SanSan. I’m so ready to move forward with it if Luisa’s Volumes are discerned by the Church to be authentic and I’m equally ready to totally drop it if Mother Church says: No more.

  7. Thank-you, Charlie for your input, and thank-you, especially for including Abp. Siller’s Decree.
I was happy for your discernment as my usual response is to sit back and wait for it all to play out. To have the Abp. respond so completely and clearly was helpful to me also.
God bless you and bless all our wonderful bishops who are simply trying to act out God’s will. Katey in OR

  8. “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

    Mathew 18:18

Jesus gave His church (Magisterium) power and authority. It is why they discern, usually over time, what it legitimate and which is not. No secular power, group or individual has that authority…period. Once a person or group decides that they are just following “God” they outperform even Jesus who said He does not follow His own will but that of His Father– Who’s legit authority He placed over Himself while on earth as a lesson of obedience for humanity to follow. For this, God gave Him “all power and authority” over His church which He then placed at the charge of the apostles who handed it down through the apostolic succession becoming what we now know as the Magisterium.

Since God Himself established this authority, He would not usurp it, particularly through a non-magisterial body or person’s vision or locution.

Simply put: why would God change this pattern after 2000 year?

    He wouldn’t.

  10. Yikes 😬 thank you for posting this Charlie! I heard about these “alleged,” messages on the last grace force so I searched them out, read them And spread the messages on fb and a few close friends! Now I’ll send your take on this new news from their bishop. I agree with you wholeheartedly! Obedience trumps! I don’t know a lot of things but I do know when people don’t obey their bishop (with things of this nature) division ensues.

I believe what goes on in the Biblical Holy Land is still relevant for US as is the significance of Blood Sacrifice. Blood Sacrifice from Old Testament to The Cross to modern Martyrs is a critical part of Our Faith! …….. a part that offends many 1st Worlders.

    1. Thank you, Joyful, for sharing this news with us. Praying for the repose of Susan’s dear mother’s soul. Praying as well for Susan and for all who love her momma. How beautiful to pass into Eternal Life on this date when we usually celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation. May Christ’s Perpetual Light shine upon Mary Josephine Carr Green!!
