I have often spoken of how, many decades ago, I came to the understanding that authentic prophecy is not so much that men may fathom the mind of God as it is that they may see the spiritual reality behind certain temporal events. That means that a solid prophecy is cause for more alertness to events rather than smug assumption that one “knows” God’s plan.
For almost a millennium before the birth of Christ authentic prophets in Israel had foretold the coming of a Messiah who would redeem God’s people. During that same millennium, not a single person of any stature expected that Messiah to be anything other than a political and military leader who would restore the temporal dominance of Israel. No one got the specifics right – or even close – that God would come, Himself, becoming part of our family that we might have the opportunity to become part of His family. God is always startling, fresh, and new.
People think that prophecy is revelation. They are not wrong, but it is only in the most general sense – like a mysteriously wrapped package under the Christmas tree is revelation that there is a gift there. The fulfillment of prophecy is the beginning of revelation. It is in the events that unfold after fulfillment of prophecy that we see God’s plan begin to unfold. It is always in ways that are unexpected and extravagantly generous.
Many good people have counseled me to temporize in my support of Israel after the atrocities Hamas perpetrated on Oct. 7 of this year. I will not and cannot. This is one of those temporal events that has a much larger spiritual significance. It is the beginning of a great revelation, one that will cut to the bone of all our expectations.
I have been expecting an event like this. It signals a great new turning, just as the Revelation 12 sign in the sky on Sept. 23, 2017 signaled the beginning of laying bare the rot at the core of all our institutions in the world. Apparently, I have not conveyed what I think this all portends very well, as some seem to think I believe that this will be a quick battle between good and evil where my favored side will briskly prevail. Others seem to believe that I think one side comes with entirely clean hands and the other with entirely dirty ones. We seem to have lost the capacity to distinguish between what is flawed or outright bad and what is genuinely evil. Even worse, many seem to think that one cannot fight actual evil with real vigor unless one’s hands are as pure as a vestal virgin’s.
The first effect of Armageddon is to destroy our illusions. For the brief interregnum since WWII, we in America and much of Western Europe have lived in a cocoon of safety. While that is comforting, with the loss of any real knowledge of history it has made us into pitiful rubes who are simultaneously preeningly arrogant in our naivete. We play judge and jury about what everyone else does from our cocoon of safety in the west, having completely lost our sense of history and how starkly existential all battles, but particularly tribal battles, are. My primary message in, “Welcome to Armageddon,” was not that the devils were coming for Israel, but they are coming for each and every one of us. The invasion of and atrocities on Israel on Oct. 7 were the equivalent of the Battle of Manassas, the first major battle of what became a much larger, comprehensive American Civil War. Only this time it is global. This is what I have meant when I have said that God is pushing us to a time where each of us must choose whom we will serve and publicly declare ourselves. There is no area of neutrality. The only judge and jury in this case is God, Himself. The rest of us are participants, whether we like it or not.
Let me go, brick by brick, why I believe the attack on Israel is the opening battle in what will be the greatest crisis in world history. First, a little history and some facts on the ground…
- There has never been a nation of Palestine. There is no unique Palestinian language or set of customs. Palestine is a region of the Middle East, just as Appalachia is a region of the US. For almost all of history the Palestinian Region has had Jews and Arabs intermingled. It was ruled by Israel in antiquity, which was conquered by Rome, then conquered by Muslims and the Ottoman Empire, then ceded to Great Britain after the Ottoman Empire was vanquished, culminating in the re-establishment of the Jewish State of Israel in 1948. The Arabs in Palestine were offered a mandate to create their own nation-state at the same time, but declined. This would be the first of three refusals by Palestinian Arabs to form a nation-state. The sticking point? All such agreements required Palestinian Arabs to give up dreams of exterminating Israel and all Jews in the region.
- Israel became a nation in the Palestinian region around 4,000 years ago. Though conquered and ruled by others for much of that history there has been a continuous and substantial population of Jews there ever since. After becoming a nation-state again in 1948, surrounding Arab states united to try to completely exterminate Israel. They lost. They did it again in 1967 and then in 1973. Again, they were vanquished in the subsequent attempts, losing territory in the process. The population of Arab Palestine surged, as the other Arab states largely refused to accept those Arab soldiers displaced by the wars back into their native countries. In 2000, Pres. Bill Clinton brokered a deal that would give Palestinian Arabs an independent nation. Israel made substantial concessions, but the Palestinians refused, launching yet another Intifada against Israel. In 2008 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered the Palestinians a new deal – one in which Israel would evacuate tens of thousands of Jewish residents beyond what it had already evacuated from Gaza and give the Palestinians nation-state status. Again, the agreement would require Palestine to abandon its goal of exterminating Israel and all Jews. Palestine refused.
- In 2006, having been given autonomous authority by Israel in Gaza, the Palestinians elected Hamas, a committed terror organization, to govern it. According to public surveys, Hamas retains 57% overt support at the low end and 65% overt support at the high end among Palestinians even after the brutal butchery of Oct. 7. As a humanitarian gesture, Israel had been giving Palestine free water, electricity and other utilities since 2007 – because Palestine’s government used the billions it has got in aid to buy rockets and bombs to destroy Israel instead of building public services. Despite the smear of being colonizers, Israel remains the only multi-ethnic state in the region. The 2 million Arabs in Israel live unmolested, with full citizenship rights – even serving in the Knesset. Israel provides evacuation routes for Palestinian civilians while Hamas refuses to let anyone use those routes, preferring to keep its human shields to slow Israel down and to have as propaganda against Israel. It is absurd to criticize Israel for bombing the published evacuation routes after several days of no one using them. Egypt has sealed its borders against any Palestinian refugees. Other Arab nations refuse to receive them because the Palestinians are too radically violent for even other Muslim states.
The events since Oct. 7 are not just business as usual in the Middle East – or the rest of the world, for that matter. After nearly a century of wallowing in shades of grey and indulging in constant “on the one hand, on the other” equivocations, we are now forced into a series of black and white binaries. God is forcing us to make choices and publicly declare ourselves. You must choose or perish. It is time for serious precision of thought and action.
I have often made clear my contempt for hazy, pious-sounding bromides that sound okay but mean nothing – or constitute a complete misunderstanding of the sentiment expressed. Foggy thinking makes for foggy action – and constitutes much of the reason why we have drifted far from the philosophical moorings that made Western Civilization the great blessing for mankind it is. A few quick examples:
- “WWJD, What Would Jesus Do?” Though well-meaning, this question completely misses the point. Jesus might well walk across a lake to get to the other side. Jesus might use His authority to calm a storm. I am not Jesus – and His mission is not the mission He has assigned me. The salient question is, what would Jesus have me do?
- “Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.” A genuine saying of Christ, but many silly, shallow people have used it to justify outlawing swords, or demanding that Christians never use force for anything. If that is what Christ meant, why did He tell all His disciples to get a sword for after His departure in Luke 22? To live by the sword is to impose your will by force; those who do that will ultimately perish when the same force is used defensively against them. This is not just with Christ’s approval, but at His solemn command.
I could give dozens of examples but these are sufficient. If you simply shop the Bible or other great wisdom literature in search of snippets that seem to support what you already want to believe, you will not get wiser. You will get dumber – and more petulantly certain in your own ignorance. You must study it looking for seeming contradictions and see how they interact in synthesis with each other in order to find truth and the fullness of the meaning. It is the difference between stumbling around in a pile of lumber and exploring a house made from that lumber.
Do you have a coherent, comprehensive world view? Or are you just situationally opportunistic, eagerly taking every snippet you like to heart regardless of how it contradicts other things you profess to believe? Again, it is the difference between stumbling around in a pile of lumber and exploring a house made artfully from that lumber. A pile of lumber will offer you little to no protection from the stark choices that now abound. A coherent edifice is defensible.
So first, dig deep. Challenge your own assumptions vigorously. It is hard work, but it filters out the contradictions and errors. It is essential for these times and the battle before us. If you are your own worldview’s most demanding critic you will speak with confidence, for what you say has already been mercilessly vetted. It prevents you from becoming a blowhard.
From the time I started writing about these times I have been consistent on what the overall sequence looks like. First, substantial dysfunction grows almost invisibly as people shirk off discrete instances as not their concern or not that big a deal. Then the depth of the rot that has taken hold is revealed. This is frightening and disorienting, when it should have been the steady growth that was frightening – before it could take hold. Then all must choose and publicly declare themselves. During this period, God ruthlessly slaps down the comforting fantasies and sophistry with which people try to console themselves and pretend they are in control. We are in that period now. Once enough people abandon all illusions and make their mature stand, God will intervene. He does not forsake a penitent people.
First, there is the illusion that battles do not have to be existential. This was largely promoted by a president I otherwise admire, Harry Truman. It was Truman who came up with the idea of limited war, accomplishing some aims, then evacuating in hopes that everything will sort itself out. Throughout history, battles have largely been either to the death or to unconditional surrender. My attitude has always been to avoid war if at all possible. If there is no option left but war, I do not believe in proportionality. Go in hard, fast and strong, making the consequences of war clear to the opponent. The quicker an opponent realizes a war is unwinnable, the more lives are ultimately saved.
A civilized nation will not target civilians. Yet in any war, many civilians will die as collateral damage. When you make it a prime objective that no civilians be harmed, rather than that they not be targeted, you give savage opponents incentive to hold their own people hostage as human shields to prevent you from attacking them. This results in more innocent people being killed. Imagine a group of 20 gang members highjacked a school bus with innocent kids inside – and then started systematically killing everyone in the region who was not part of their gang. If you refused to target the bus because of the children, do you think you bear no responsibility for all the innocent people that die? Sorrowfully, hostages often – maybe usually – die. But God’s justice ensures that no innocent hostage dies to eternity. The best way to prevent it is to make sure that belligerents who seize hostages are killed with dispatch. If you can do so effectively while saving hostages, by all means do so. But do not let your principles keep you from destroying the belligerents. Otherwise, you are setting up an endless cycle of hostage-taking and condemning more innocents. That is both hard and real. Genuine war is a desperate and savage effort at survival.
For eons, siege warfare was used as an effective method of prosecuting a battle that would minimize casualties. A siege would cut off all supply lines to the opponent, effectively starving them into surrender. The Nazis perverted this humane option in the Siege of Leningrad in WWII. Germany would not accept surrender and sought just to starve everyone to death. Now, ignorant folk demand not only that there never be a siege, but that opponents must feed their enemies, ensuring that resistance can go on endlessly with casualties rising endlessly, as well.
The ”on the one hand, on the other” equivocations that have taken root in the west have caused us to lose the capacity to differentiate between disorder and actual evil. The demand that no one can resist evil unless they have spotlessly clean hands is a formula for the death of all at the hands of evil. Even in prison, inmates know there are some prisoners who are beyond the pale because of their depravity and savagery. Pathetic that our temporizing has left us less able to discern actual evil than convicted, violent criminals. Of course, sometimes the temporizing is just an excuse for not taking any meaningful stand at all.
We have long, particularly in the United States, played judge and jury to the actions of other nations, secure in the knowledge that however we come down, the violence will not reach us. That is why this event with Hamas is global – and guarantees we will face the starkest choices now. We have allowed the godless left to mutilate language to the point we establish moral equivalency between combatants who have no moral equivalency – and that has just empowered the savages.
Among young people between the ages of 18-25, surveys show 48% of them support Hamas over Israel. The same surveys show that 71% of the same people believe that Hamas is bent on genocide against Israel. That means that a substantial majority of those who support Hamas understand it is genocide and support the worst atrocities for their comrades in arms to get their way. That means that the greatest horror is not that many people are so ignorant of history that they will errantly support the brutal torture of even babies to get their way, but that so many DO know the history and still support the butchering of babies to get their way. That is not errant disorder, but naked evil.
This entirely shreds the moral pretense of the godless left. They posture as champions of the downtrodden, filled with compassion and charity for all. By their actions, they are telling us loud and clear that they do not oppose genocide and butchery on principle, but simply as a tactical matter. They would kill us where we stand if they believed they were strong enough to make it stick. Contemplate that the next time you hear a plea for “common sense gun control.”
We have had a great moral illumination here. One side is repulsed by the idea of savage genocide as an acceptable means to get their way; the other side eagerly embraces it, restlessly working to gaslight the world into putting them into position to make it stick. The left in the west cheers on the butchery because it is what they aspire to when they feel strong enough.
This has huge consequences for personal relationships. It is also the driving force that will transform the globe very quickly. As I have written before, contrary to all the happy talk about peaceful Islam, the Koran commands Muslims to conquer the world – by persuasion if possible, by the sword if not. The many Muslims who do, indeed, value peace are now going to have to deal with the stark internal contradictions of their faith. As much as I loathe Islamic Jihad, my study of the Koran and the Haddith after 9-11 shocked me into the realization that it is the most authentic expression of Islam. Multiculturalists are going to have to come to grips that some cultures are superior to others in guaranteeing peace and co-existence, while other cultures seek to obtain it by butchering everyone who disagrees with them.
Western Europe is probably lost, at least for a time. In London last weekend they had several hundred thousand people marching in support of Hamas. Western Europe welcomed in the invaders with no requirement of adopting western notions of liberty and tolerance. Now they are about to reap what they have sown. Russia, which is playing footsie with Iran to tweak America, saw a horde of antisemites storm an airport looking for Jews to kill at an airport in Dagestan, its majority-Muslim province. Russia has had more than its share of problems with Islamic Jihad, notably the Beslan School attack of 2004 in which 333 people, mostly children, were attacked and murdered. It, too, will have to decide where it stands on principle rather than tactical considerations.
In the United States, lip service was given to Israel while Joe Biden hastened to get $100 million in new aid for…Palestine. Though many civilians suffered in Germany, Franklin Roosevelt never considered giving financial aid to the Nazis, knowing that it would go to finance Hitler’s war aims. America DID give historic assistance after receiving Germany’s unconditional surrender ending the war.
One fellow (here or on Twitter) informed me the fight to destroy Hamas might destabilize Israel internally, leading to its government falling. Do I come across as a dewy-eyed naif? Of course it might. The only thing that keeps Israel from being as leftist as San Francisco is the ever-present threat of annihilation. Many modern Jews have subordinated Yahweh to mindless leftism. They, too, will have to decide whom they will serve. For them, though, it is obviously existential now.
Apparently, some think that when I say many unexpected things will happen I mean all things will fall the way I want them to. To the contrary, borders will fall, alliances will rise and die and ALL will be winnowed to determine whom they will serve. Some I will like, some I will not. We are on uncharted ground now. What I know is that God intends to force us to choose or perish – and that is what we will do. I have never offered a plan on how to turn back the storm we have summoned. I have spoken of how to weather it in solidarity with each other under God.
If you are going to write to direct my attention to the puddles of dysfunction among communities and people of faith to try to pretend it is the same thing as the pestilential swamp of dysfunction we have welcomed, don’t bother. I am not at all interested in your sophistries at this stage of things.
If you want to avoid, at all costs, the sufferings attendant to what is upon us, you will probably perish. This last year I have bluntly told people at talks who have asked who will send their social security checks if the government falls that no one will. It will be gone. I soften it by noting that if it happens to one person, that is a disaster but when it happens to all, it forces people of good will to live solidarity with each other. That is what the whole purpose of CORAC has been from the start: a way to live solidarity in cooperation with each other in the ugliest of times.
The Church hierarchy is going to have to make some tough decisions. If it just wants to be a leftist NGO to gain influence in the world, it will quickly find its influence dead on both the left and the right – or more appropriately among the heterodox as well as the orthodox.
Those people who retreat into theological conspiracies, ersatz theological takes that contradict Scripture and the Magisterium, wishful thinking about the dominant political figure who will rescue us all, or ersatz private revelation (including made up addendums to approved private revelation) are just trying to maintain a semblance of control over what they never had control of in the first place. The only thing any of us control is our behavior. It is through that – Acknowledge God, take the next right step, and be a sign of hope – that God will move to renew the face and the faith of the world. If you adopt that fully internally, you will suffer hardship and want. But you will discover, improbably, great joy in the midst of the suffering. God has begun the process of taking us down to our foundations, to rebuild or discard us as we show our fidelity or lack thereof. It is paradoxically through our suffering we will re-discover all we have forfeited. The joy at the rediscovery will be sublime.
I know that there are many people of good will who will disagree with me profoundly on this nakedly stark assessment. That is okay. This, too, is a process of discovery. If things proceed broadly the way I foresee them, we will be glad to welcome you back into the fold if you later decide that the ordinary way makes the most sense, after all.

Because of my illness we postponed the global ZOOM meeting last Sunday. It is on for this Sunday at 4 pm ET, 3 pm CT, 2 pm MT, and 1pm PT. I am prepared for a very lively discussion. But first, I will lay out the direction CORAC is taking now.
Your link to the meeting is here.

If communication goes out for any length of time, meet outside your local Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Tell friends at Church now in case you can’t then. CORAC teams will be out looking for people to gather in and work with.

We needed this, Charlie. Thank you. Love the brick by brick approach and the history material. (I’m ever learning as you teach and preach.) Your love for us shines through your forthright expressions of what has been, what is and what will be dire events right up ahead.
This is another keeper for meditation and contemplation. May we continue pondering, honing and integrating mindsets which stir up greater fortitude, trust in the Lord and authentic reliance on Him while being ever ready to take all the NRSs to which He directs us as we weather what is to be with those around us.
This post is a kind of Confirmation piece. About 63 years ago, I received my slap on the cheek. Oh it was gentle, but it signified this potent message which I lifted off a summary about the Sacrament of Confirmation: “It was to make me recollect that as a valiant combatant, I should be prepared to endure with unconquered spirit ALL adversities for the Name of Christ.”
We’re being called to maturity and your writing has just the right amount of being slapped in the face to shake us out of complacency, illusions of control, temptations to arrogance, addiction to private revelation which gives us the inside scoop and more… May we be filled anew with Holy Spirit who can quell our fears and bring forth new measures of courage, the better to Love and serve God and His people. And may we seek God’s enlightenment about our needed areas of growth NOW.
With hands opened wide, let us pray to receive God’s Plan and Will in all the dimensions which will bring forth New Life in the Renewal now underway. Blessed be God forever! Ave Maria eternally!

Amen Charlie. I agree on all fronts with you. I have to say though, that being in agreement with my government at the beginning of Hammas attack on Isreal unnerved me. I really don’t believe our govts stance on anything these days. In fact, it looks like we will leave Isreal out to dry. Sending “aid” in seemed ridiculous, as you said. Sad that Isreal is having its hands tied by universal opinion. The whole war could have been over by now if they had had free reign. I think that the worse is yet to come, especially in America. Talk about letting your guard down. We are wide open, I say regrettably. Thank you for a very honest and stark commentary. With all the rhetoric going on, it’s hard to see the forest through the trees.

Well, not to worry SanSan: your government didn’t mean what it said. You did.

Thank you for the historical background on Palestine. It provides important context that many find inconvenient because it gets in the way of their preferred narratives and outcomes. For that reason, it has been buried by the Ministry of Truth.
One of the most fascinating, and scary, features of the last 15 years is that every time you think things can’t get worse, they do in very substantial ways. Likewise, when you look backward at how your own view of the world, your country and government, and the Church has changed over that period of time, you realize how wrong your assumptions were and how much malice and dysfunction (and Marxism) were hidden beneath the surface of everything without you noticing it was there. Then as you look forward again to the future, you understand further that there is so much more yet to be revealed. It is somewhat intimidating to think about it all. Ultimately, for me, this is partly what makes it easier to abandon it all to God’s protection and providence. I am neither equipped nor prepared to find the answers to what lies ahead. All I can do is rely on God to show me the way forward. Without that, it would truly be overwhelming. Jesus, I trust in you.

Thank you Charlie for always being honest and straight to the point. We need that and there isn’t much of it anymore. I will not be able to be on the Zoom meeting this Sunday. Is there any chance it will be recorded? Or is that even possible with Zoom?

It will be recorded and rebroadcast – though, of course, you can’t ask questions in a rebroadcast. (Well, you can actually…you just can’t get any answers.)

This is how I talk to God. This is how I ask my husband what do I do now. God is silent – though Charlie may answer my questions later. My long dead husband is also silent. So I ask St. Joseph. Oh, yes, he is silent also. But maybe somehow answers come, and I carry on. And then, yes, I ask again.

Thanks, Charlie, for this brilliant review, analysis, and commentary.
Hamas placed an infant in an oven, lit it afire, and then had the parents watch as their child screamed in agony burning alive; then they chopped off the parent’s heads; they videoed their brutality back home to parents and on the internet proud of what they had done. Hamas raped young girls, dragged them thru streets, and then chopped off their heads. Those who support this behavior define themselves for God and humanity as likewise evil.

Jack,
The bible tells how when a person (or nation) falls from truth that they enter darkness of reason. We seldom see this, if ever, on a large scale as it is mostly censored but now the censors have joined the fallen too in their moral compass to an equal point of iniquity.
Charlie makes the point of drawing lines. I discovered this back when Obama was making this a type of mandate to separate Americans while he was president. Our nation had become reckless during the housing bubble and after it and the stock market popped, we became even further entrenched in drawing lines. Obama set out to destroy our nation. Declaring himself a follower of the Koran his “fundamental transformation” design was to do just that. Biden’s pay to play presidency is just a continuation of these policies but the true levers of power are global and we know who controls them:
“the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain. He showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “If you bow down and worship me,” he said, “I will give you all this.”
(Mathew 4).
But the devil is chaos personified. He can only cause chaos and confusion. The great “divider” ever destroys wisdom and the mystery of inequity displaces, more and more, the ability to descern.
This confusion concerning Israel’s enemies is biblical: “Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all.” (Isaiah 41).
“The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: “Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it. On that day, declares the Lord, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’ (Zechariah 12).

Thank you for this piece Charlie… it has helped me, especially when our government has been less than trust worthy. As things have swirled downward the last few years I have found peace through the years, sitting in front of the tabernacle before mass . Holy time then and now remains the most beneficial way for me to deal with the reality front of us. The paragraph in your explanation about reading the Bible really struck a chord.
“You must study it looking for seeming contradictions and see how they interact in synthesis with each other in order to find truth and the fullness of the meaning. It is the difference between stumbling around in a pile of lumber and exploring a house made from that lumber”
Amen! Grateful for your insight … lately in prayer that was made clear to me …. about the contradictions in the Bible and reading it in whole, as you said like taking in the finished product versus the building materials. As we know, cherry picking never is the whole truth
On a joyful note, we just returned from Estes Park YMCA inColorado last week …. got to visit chapel on the rock ,Saint Catherine’s and camp St Malo at the foot of Mount Meeker all in glorious weather. Felt so much peace as always there.

Today’s November 1st Saint of the Day is Saint Deborah, very appropriate. In 2013 I was a pilgrim in Israel and came an afternoon earlier that the rest of the group. The first night’s stay was in the coastal city Haifa. While walking the beach, about every 15 minutes a military helicopter flew along the shore. This was ongoing. Across from our hotel in Jerusalem was a police precinct with heavily armed young women guards out front. At the Jordan River near Jesus’ baptism, the mine fields still remained across the fence in Jordan. To go the Bethlehem, we went through Checkpoint 300, crossing between Israel and the Palestinian Authority territory in the West Bank.
We talked to several American Jewish young adults who seemed to be making their own pilgrimage at the encouragement of their parents. Israel will defend their right to exist.
And then we left thinking that they had their problems and it was their struggle. And now…

I think this may be the first time we’ve heard from you in comments, Louise. Welcome and thanks for sharing about your pilgrimage to Israel. Not knowing how long or how regularly you read “A Sign of Hope,” I’ll just share a penetrating passage from Charlie’s recent piece, Welcome to Armageddon. I do so to highlight that what has now begun is not about Israel’s struggle as we’ve considered the many conflicts in which she has been. The struggle is ours and the struggle is worldwide.
Before I share the excerpt from Charlie’s writing, I call to mind for us all the prophetic words of Pope St. John Paul II, spoken at an International Eucharistic Congress in 1976:
“I do not think that wide circles of American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel versus the anti-Gospel.
This confrontation lies within the plans of divine Providence; it is a trial which the whole Church . . . . must take up. It is a trial of not only . . . . the Church, but, in a sense, a test of 2,000 years of culture and Christian civilization with all of its consequences for human dignity, individual rights, human rights and the rights of nations.
We must be prepared to undergo great trials in the not-too-distant future; trials that will require us to be ready to give up even our lives, and a total gift of self to Christ and for Christ. Through your prayers and mine, it is possible to alleviate this tribulation, but it is no longer possible to avert it. . . . How many times has the renewal of the Church been brought about in blood! It will not be different this time.” (Source here.)
And now, Charlie’s enlightenment for us:
“This is not business as usual in the long-troubled Middle East. The eruption of support for the butchery in supposedly sophisticated cities throughout the world and among the trendy left elites who love to pretend to moral superiority marks this as a decisive struggle between the forces of good and evil. The battle lines are shaping between the Judeo-Christian forces who, under God, built Western Civilization, giving liberty and conscience full freedom on one side and the axis of evil of radical Islam, atheists, and leftists serving as acolytes of the satan on the other. In the global battle that has already begun, there can be no compromise: one side must win and the other lose.
The elite classes, in government, public institutions, media, academia, and entertainment are scrambling to figure out how to handle their obvious support and enabling of terrorists. Some are doubling down and openly supporting Palestinian terror. These are mostly college kids and some news people – not the brightest of the leftist pack. Others are desperately trying to establish some sort of moral equivalence between the brutalized and the brutalizers. Still others are trying to pass off weird forms of revisionist history to deny the obvious. Perhaps the most pathetic are those lefties trying to convince people that all this is Trump’s fault. (I am not joking about this. I have read several screeds by clowns who are geniuses in their own minds blaming Trump and pretending that Biden, Clinton, Kerry and the Democrats never did what they did in plain sight. I saw one particularly unhinged rant that this was all because Trump cancelled the nuclear deal with Iran.) Some really stupid, vainglorious people make up a history that never was to justify their support of murderous butchery.
Whatever excuses, deflections and justifications are used, this is become a moment of profound moral clarity. The world is divided up into people who will use and justify brutal atrocities to get their way and those in the Judeo-Christian camp who will NOT accept that atrocities are acceptable means to gain even the noblest ends.”
Perhaps for some, it just takes time to wrap our heads around the full import of where we find ourselves at this juncture. That said, it’s important to begin contemplating what IS our reality, the better to gird our loins and be a useful tool in the hands of God as He wants us not to cower in fear. (One source claims that the phrase ‘do not be afraid’ is in the Bible 365 times. No matter the exact number, we know it is repeatedly in Scripture which means God really, really wants us to pay attention to that dictum.) Rather than cling to fear, God wants us partner with Him in His Great Plan for these times.

On a previous post you gave the advice to “Let it go”
And I was just thinking how you “saved” my husband from my reprimand when he came home from the meat counter at the store with a piece of bacon for the dogs!
(and that was just one example of me putting your wise advice into practice!)
(I don’t think uncooked bacon is good for dogs and besides, they’re on a diet)

I remember my pilgrimage to Israel back in 2009. Our tour guide was a Palestinian Christian who lived in the West Bank. Toward the end of our tour I asked him point blank: would he prefer to live under the Jews or under the Muslims? His response was immediate: Under the Jews. Pretty much says it all. On top of which Israel is the only nation in the region that does not want to kill me.

What an eye opener. Charlie, your essays are part history, civics, cultural analysis and so much more. Will fwd to my millennials. Do you think there are already sleeper cells in our country waiting to wreak havoc?
A blessed solemnity of All Saints Day to all here. May they profoundly intercede for us.

How can there not be sleeper cells, Maggie? Reports about our southern border tell of people pouring in from all over the world. But I don’t think we’re the only country affected in this way. A prime example is Europe. Who can count the plethora of Muslims who have entered this continent, legally and illegally?

Yes. They are here. AS of the end of September, 169 people who are on the terror watch list were intercepted at America’s southern border this year. Since well over 10 people evade detection for everyone who does not coming through our porous border, we can extrapolate that around 2,000 terrorists have successfully entered the country this year alone. This is why Iran can promise to do to us what Hamas did to Israel. Their people are already here because of our open border. AS someone cleverly said, “Stolen elections have consequences.”

The acts committed by Hamas were pure evil. I have also read about things that Jack has brought up and more. It boggles the mind that young people in the West can celebrate this. Thanks, Charlie, for the great history lesson and another straight forward article.

I keep thinking of the warning of Our Lady of Kibeho. Her message wasn’t just for Rwanda, but for the world (her words). The brutality by which Hamas has tortured the young and innocent-how different are they from the abortionists in the US? Those who cheer this genocide- are they much different from those who cheer abortion in our nation?
In the book of Wisdom, God makes it clear that the first plague of Egypt was sent as a punishment for the murder of Israeli infants. I keep coming back to the implications of this for our time. May God grant me the courage to endure whatever comes- radiating His Love and Joy to those who come into my path.

Amen, Kate. Powerful insight. I see so many parallels in the original Exodus and what I call our own contemporary Exodus. Our ancestors in the desert were being purified as they railed against God as if He were to blame. So twisted. I think as we take our next rights steps, becoming a sign of hope to those around us, we’ll also be reminding ourselves and those in our sphere of influence that God is the author of our suffering. Not at all. In fact, we are being disciplined by God allowing us to experience the consequences of our sinful ways. And another fact: God is – and will continue – tamping down the very worst of what could be -and what we actually deserve – if He wasn’t intervening on our behalf as Divine Mercy.

It is so hard for me to wrap my head around such evil as Hamas has committed. My husband and I are listening to the Bible in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz and we just listened to 2 Maccabees about the mother with seven sons–all brutally tortured and killed. I guess there really is nothing new under the sun. Evil is evil…
I appreciate the history lesson, Charlie. Never really understood the conflict in Gaza/Palestine until today.
Finding myself on my knees more and more these days. 😔

I accuse myself of having been a ‘on one hand, on the other’ lately. This piece and a reply to a particular comment Charlie wrote in a previous thread has helped clarify my thinking.
Thanks, Charlie!

In 1976 I moved to Fort Worth for several months to do a project for my employer. Just over the hill from my apartment was a small airport that had a Cessna flight school, so I decided to earn my pilot license. While practicing with my instructor, he would occasionally reach over and pull the throttle back (which created a sound I learned to recognize), and I would have to choose some farmer’s land to head for in order to perform an emergency landing (in practice only). After I’d had about 40 hours of flying with him and on my own, my instructor arranged with the local FAA examiner to come do a flight test with me. At the test, the examiner watched me do various things and told me to do certain maneuvers. As I came out of one such maneuver, suddenly the engine died, making a different sound I had never heard before.
I cautiously kept things straight and level as the engine windmilled and said (very tensely!), “I did not do that.” This was in case he had not done anything either, and we were facing a genuine emergency. Quietly, he said, “Then I’d say you need to land the plane.”
Having waited, voiced my concern, and received a reply, I shifted from cautious gliding to having all my thoughts, emotions and actions focused on landing the plane safely.
When the events of October 7 and October 8 occurred, I saw so many people flipping the switch from not caring much about or paying much attention to the Israeli/Palestinian situation to backing Israel and its government with carte blanche permission to take down Gaza and Hamas no matter the cost.
I had tremendous trouble with this, partly because I am a Ponderous Ponderer and don’t like to jump from one state of mind to another state of mind without understanding why. I was amazed and concerned that so many people I know or could read about appeared to have learned nothing from the Covid years where people’s switch flipped and suddenly everyone had to lock down, wear masks, and (worst) blithely accept a deadly bioweapon into their arms. Hadn’t people learned that trusted people could in fact not only not deserve that trust but also have deadly evil intentions, or that events could be manipulated and propagandized? Additionally, did we – and Israel – not learn from our reaction response to our 9/11 in 2001 which over time has left us far worse off than if we had been much more measured in our response?
Even more so, as I know things (and suspect other things) about our US government and its Biden regime, so also I know things (and suspect other things) about the Israeli government that makes it illegitimate in my eyes. Just as we here in the US need to remove and charge the Biden Administration with treason and murder, so too do I think the people of Israel need not only to handle Hamas and the Gaza Strip but also decide whether to remove their own government and try members of it for treason and murder.
When Charlie wrote his two posts, “Welcome to Armageddon” and “The Devil is in the Details,” somehow, I don’t know how, I got the impression that Charlie was saying that I had to support the Israelis and their *government* in their fight with Hamas and the Gazans, in order for me to remain right with God.
That really took me aback, and I wrote some comments expressing my concerns about the situation and how everyone was reacting.
Instead of dealing with me specifically in comments, Charlie wrote a third post, “What is Truth?”, and I must admit I am much relieved, as he answered my two main concerns, though he may not have intended that specific a response.
First, he said he doesn’t care what happens to the Israeli government or any other entity or people because *everyone* and every entity is now on the line to go through this global experience of Armageddon. God will be testing every person and every entity without exception.
Second, Charlie clarified that how we reacted to the event(s) that triggered our entry into Armageddon really makes no difference. We’re all in it anyway, and it will test all of us.
When I understood this, I realized that I was in the same place I was in during that FAA flight test when my engine died. Now that he has helped me understand that we are all in the soup together no matter our way into that soup, I am able to do what I did when I got the reply from the FAA examiner – I can drop all my past and present concerns and simply devote all my thoughts, emotions and actions henceforth to navigating through Armageddon to my moment of Choice.
And that brought to my mind another analogy. At the end of the regular season, the Major League Baseball teams entering the playoffs drop their past record and start the playoffs with no wins or losses. Yes, *how* they come into the playoffs, their predilections, degree of teamwork, and so on, will impact how they proceed through the playoffs, but the past no longer matters in an objective record sense.
Now I realize that we all have entered Armageddon State as of October 7 & 8, no matter who we decided to back nor how we made that decision, though our habitual methods of choosing and our biases or leanings will affect how we go through Armageddon.
Like Charlie, I am not a fan of limited wars. The best way is to do everything you can to develop peaceful relations, but at some point war is the only way forward and *should* be existential to at least your enemy. Also like Charlie I have read the Quran. In fact, I have read the version that is taught, which is the ahistorical Quran, and the version the imams keep to themselves, which is the historical Quran. They teach the ahistorical version, which mixes up the various stories, because doing that almost completely obscures the fact which is exposed by the historical Quran, which is that the Dear Leader became more and more bloodthirsty, demanding, power-hungry, and evil the longer he lived and taught. I found nothing but bad stuff there and realized a long time ago, like Charlie, that Radical Islam *is* the purest form of Islam.
The Israelis have not been as pure as the driven snow in their treatment of the Palestinians in the past, but (1) several times they have worked to be fair, and (2) altering their behavioral lapses would confirm their best character. On the other hand, if Hamas were to alter its behavior to show their best character, they would largely cease to be Hamas. My sympathies and general support lie with the Israelis. Now that I gather that supporting the Israeli government is not required to remain right with God, I can leave it to the Israelis themselves, first, to decide what to do not only to handle the Gaza and Hamas but, second, also choose whether or how to repair or replace their own government. I think the Israelis will face their Choose or Perish moment(s) in a way that will encourage them to choose God. I have no such belief at the moment that Hamas and many of its supporters in Gaza will face their moment(s) of Choose or Perish without great risk of choosing badly. Both sides deserve my prayers, but I suspect Hamas *needs* them more.
Finally, we’re in Armageddon State whether we like it or not or whether we flipped our switch on Israel on October 8 or spent a few weeks cautiously thinking things through. I suspect that our future path requires less Pondering and more Acting to help oneself and one’s neighbors through all the troubles and choices coming our way.
No matter how each of us chose to enter Armageddon State, It was simply time to move there, and we were all, in our own way, simply ripe for that move.
My apologies to anyone who was confused by my confusion, and I thank Charlie for taking the time to address my (and anyone else’s) concerns.

Interesting Steve that Oct 7th is a major Marian feast day, the Holy Rosary. Throughout history God has used the Blessed Mother’s feast days as markers probably to remind us that, in the end, will be the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart.

Even more telling in the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Patricia and Steve, is that it was THE decisive battle, in 1571, that saved Christian Europe from being overcome by Muslim dominance. And the battle came to conclusion as it did, for Pope Pius V asked all Christians to pray the Rosary, seeking Our Lady’s potent intercession. (Our Lady didn’t appear with messages about the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart until more than four hundred years later in 1917.) I don’t think it an accident that Hamas and all in cahoots with its barbaric alliance intentionally chose October 7th to launch their newest onslaught of heinous crimes as they now charge forward to fulfill the dictum of the Koran.
Charlie said it best: “This is not business as usual in the long-troubled Middle East. In the global battle that has already begun, there can be no compromise: one side must win and the other lose.“

Amen, SteveBC. With plenty of opportunities to test us: Do we really trust in God and His Plan?
My prayers these days are for hardened hearts to be opened, repentant and converted (the most powerful act to bring about mitigation) AND that my own hands remain open as I release to God all the messages I’ve ever read, along with my discernment, knowledge and and insights (This doesn’t mean I’m a non-thinking zombie; rather, it is an act of readiness and willingness to let my own limited thinking go when it becomes clear that my filter was clogged with things that were never meant to be or which were altered in real time as only God knows best how to bring about the greatest number of conversions).
I want, wish and will to be among those who will welcome, receiving with gratitude and with empty hands, what God is actually doing, day by day, moment by moment
