I was somewhat startled at the reaction to my last piece on my disaffection with Pope Francis and his crew of theological vandals. Oh, I had a few of the usual cranks who explained to me how I am wrong about everything or citing their simplistic literal take on some prophecy to refute me. I had one fellow who is fully orthodox, but also fully supportive of whatever Francis does. Itβs a contradiction, but he is a very good man, trying to find his way in difficult times as are the rest of us. There are a few others like that that I have not heard from this time.
But the bulk of the reactions left me thinking that the Vatican and heterodox Bishops are now sitting on a powder keg of their own making. I heard from a lot of Priests who were very glad I was talking bluntly about the whole thing without opining that since there are some bad clerics, all clerics are bad. There is a huge amount of dismay and resentment from the most docile and obedient Priests.
I had one Priest of a particular order tell me that he agreed with everything I had written, but his order had discussed it and is going to keep their heads down and pray for relief. That seemed perfectly legitimate to me. With various religious orders, we have some which work in public actively, some which are contemplative, and some which are cloistered. We are not all the same, but all work together from their authentic calling to build up the kingdom.
Of course, Diocesan Bishops are called to publicly defend the faith and the faithful. They can do it subtly with diplomatic elegance or they can do it boldly and full-throatedly, but they must do it with fidelity to the Master of all. To fail to do it in particular instances can be forgiven: to refuse to do it for worldly considerations is to repudiate the Master, Himself. As a fellow I much admire once said, βThere will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.β
I wonder, sometimes, how many of our leaders believe in God at all anymore. I do not get disconsolate when I am treated unjustly because I know the Lord of Hosts sees all β and will repay. I fear not doing the most right thing I can think of because I know the Lord of Hosts sees all β and will repay. Whether leaders believe or not, the Lord will reveal Himself in His time. The question is, βWhen the son of man comes, will He find faith on earth?β (Luke 18:8) Woe to those who have not considered the Lord, in order to make the world think they are smart! Those who have taken an oath to defend the faith and the faithful and yet refuse, in order to make the world think they are smart, might as well take their millstone fitting now.

I do not believe the country will hold together to the next election. I think we will go into real secession, full catastrophic collapse, or open civil war before we get there. Iβm rooting for secession as the least violent of the alternatives before us.
Townhallβs Kurt Schlichter has been on fire lately about where all this dysfunction is leading. He is also right on target about the co-conspirator culpability of the establishment media.
That said, I will still opine about our political βchoicesβ for two reasons. First, I might be wrong. While I have historically been deadly accurate about substance in my analyses, I have also been off on timing. (Cranks like to focus on extraneous details I miss, but who cares? Cranks are going to crank.) Second, it is what I have spent most of my life doing. Old habits are hard to break.
It has dismayed me to see conservatives, who think they are immune to leftist depredations, approach the primary elections as a flame war rather than a vigorous debate of actual issues between candidates. The supporters of Trump and DeSantis have besmirched themselves with false, nasty smears about the opponent. They may not have adopted the ideology of the left, but many have adopted wholesale the lying smear tactics of the left.
I think Donald Trump will ultimately be regarded as a great hero in the American tale. He was the first to openly and bluntly challenge the noxious dysfunction which has pretended to be wisdom in our elite ruling class. America was founded to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Little men of great self-regard took control and made it a government of the elite, by the elite, and for the elite. Trump broke the ice protecting that cadre of experts without expertise.
Trump ignited a movement for the people and against the elite. That movement is only picking up steam as it goes. Yet if Trump ignited the movement, I canβt help thinking that he may, personally, already be a spent force in that movement. Everything is so bloody personal to him. That is partly understandable, as there are few figures in American political history who have been so unjustly and relentlessly persecuted. I want accountability for the persecution. I think a lot of mainstream leftist leaders deserve prison for their dishonest, vicious, and illegal tactics. But I canβt help notice that the majority of people Trump denounces these days are people he, himself, hired. His personnel decisions were often made based on who flattered him best in the moment. He suffered more sabotage from the deep state than any of us imagined possible, but his often scattershot approach to key issues did not help. On the few that he maintained consistent focus, he did well. But Trumpβs approach to governance could hardly be called consistent or disciplined.
Ron DeSantis does not have the charisma that Trump has at all. Nor does he have the presence or political judgment that Trump does. DeSantis actually is what a lot of Democrats falsely brag about: a policy wonk.
When DeSantis decided to make anti-wokeism the centerpiece of his early campaign, I thought it a very serious mistake. In my estimation, a campaign theme is a sort of coat hanger which should capture the essence of a candidateβs nature and on which he can hang each of his specific policy positions. For DeSantis, I would have chosen something like, βHe gets it done.β He is not going to out-charisma Donald Trump β or out-insult him, either, for that matter. A campaign theme should put your best foot forward and keep people focused on what the primary benefit you bring to the position is. That DeSantis gets it done is his best quality β and his theme should keep this front and center all the time. His personnel decisions are routinely good and dispassionate. When he takes on an issue, he carries it through to fruition by having command of all the details. He wastes no time or capital raging about things he cannot or will not change. Florida did not elect him because of his great charisma. He barely won the first time. But once Floridians saw how effectively and surely he gets it done, and how consistent he is in what he champions, they re-elected him in an historic landslide. If DeSantis engages in a flame war with Trump, he will lose. If he keeps it focused on how determinedly and effectively he gets it done without extraneous battles, he will win.
In this election, I prefer DeSantis. But I have seen Trump govern before, so I would feel reasonably confident that if he prevails, he would put aside the flame-thrower and focus on priorities for the good of all. I will not flame either of these men.
Of course, I think it wonβt matter because we are coming up to fundamental disruption. But it DOES matter. We are going to need good, solid men and women to rebuild from the ashes the left is bent on leaving us with. Now is a time when character is revealed β and that matters a lot, however things play out.

I am a committed Catholic, committed with my whole heart. But from the beginning, I made it clear that, βall faithful and orthodox Christians of any stripe, and orthodox Jews, as well, are full and equal partners in the work before us. There are no βjuniorβ partners here. And all people of good will, whatever their faith, are true neighbors to us. If we devote ourselves to the work before us well, God, Himself, will see to the unity among us after the storm has passed.β This is foundational to everything we do.
I agree with most Protestants that your level of holiness is mainly dependent on your relationship with God. Denominations give you tools to achieve that. I think the deposit of faith has been entrusted to the Catholic Church. That means that Catholics have the best tools to develop relation with Christ, particularly the Eucharist. What that means is that a bad Catholic is the worst of the worst β a man who has squandered the elegant tools Christ has given him. I admire my Protestant brothers who boldly seek the will of Christ andΒ do it. That I think they do so without as many sacramental tools as I have makes their accomplishment all the more praiseworthy.
No person living today is responsible for the divisions in Christianity. We are all responsible for doing the work that God has laid out for us. If we do that well, not one person who has put his shoulder to the plow will be deprived of his heavenly reward β and part of that reward is unity, which we will get only after we have done the work God intends for us.
I am thinking of getting a moderator for the threads, similar to what we do on this site. We very rarely have to remove anyone. Once people get the idea of what the bounds are it makes for fruitful, fraternal discussions rather than mere flame wars.
If you are mainly interested in proving that the Catholic Church is the only way to achieve unity with God β or the Baptist Church or the Methodist Church or whatever, there are places for you on the Internet. This is not one of them. We are focused on authentic brotherhood and the work before usβ¦and all who call on the name of the Lord are welcome here. Those who believe that Godβs word is binding and decisive are my brothers, even if they interpret some things a bit differently than I do.
If communication goes out for any length of time, meet outside your local Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Tell friends at Church now in case you canβt then. CORAC teams will be out looking for people to gather in and work with.

Thank you, Charlie, for giving your opinion of both Trump and DeSantis. It’s too bad they can’t/don’t work together. They would make a great team.
I do think, though, that we all fall into that trap of flattery. And the devil is wily and can make something (or someone) bad seem like a good. This is why it is so important for us to pray for all candidates to be prayerful themselves and rely on God.

I so often agree with your words that I pray extra that we are seeing the true Way. As a convert also, I can clearly see the good in both sides. We all love God.
We, also hope for secession over civil war although it may happen here in Oregon as the βredβ eastern side separates from the βblueβ western side leaving us on the wrong side! π’ On the other hand, there are more corac members on the western side.

Read it. Underlined it. Reread most of it. Answered so much of the psychology in Germany 1930βs and Christianity there. I always am reminded of Pope Benedictβs parents and how they handled it. Metaxas does draw parallels to today in a jaw dropping way.

The Congressional hearing with the IRS whistle blowers made it perfectly clear that Brandon was selling services to foreigners and employed Hunter as his bagman. Even AOC could see that as she twitted her minutes away trying to distract from the damnable truth; other DemoRats chose to distract by ranting about the lack of equity in traffic stops and criminal convictions for Blacks. The role of the Justice Dept and its FBI covering for the Brandon grifters was made obvious– no one could deny it with trivial BS excuses of prosecutorial discretion honestly playing out, with Hunter said to have been fully charge. No DemoRat or their media allies has even attempted to explain away the LLCs created to channel the payola to the Brandon grifters– it’s just as obvious as obvious could ever be.
But, there is no street rioting while the politicians exchange nasty stares and both claim to be supporting “Democracy. The FBI and JD carry on with business as usual. Trump continues to be attacked by every Tom, Dick, and Harry who claim to be vested prosecutors and investigators. Really nothing much is changing, except the enormity of the Brandon crimes has been fully exposed. Teenagers continue on their way concerned with their daily lives as usual. Wall Street is unaffected. The media continue to lie, if more brazenly. The politicians yak yak at each other and the public as they have always done. More or less same-old same-old is how our country turns now from one day to the next.
The next election is the thing, whether honestly conducted or not.

Excellent article, as usual, Charlie. It is getting depressing. It is hard to tell now, up here in Canada, if we are ahead of you in decline or behind. Sometimes I think we are behind, the U.S.A. has actually surpassed us. We have hope in that Justin Trudeau now has 20 cars in a motorcade, unheard of for a Canadian Prime Minister, because he is hounded by protestors everywhere he goes. Our “Truckers” are heroes, they helped to wake up and stiffen those who had lost hope. We, in Canada, need the U.S.A. to be on the right path because of the great cultural and economic integration. God help us all.

Been praying for Canada for a long time, David. You, Canadians, have borne a mighty weight. May the Lord strengthen and console you. We, in ASOH, CORAC and beyond in this country, are hanging in there with you and for you as we walk through God’s Plan. I can see how He has used the works, prayers and tears of many who have gone before, living the faith steadfastly by placing God at the center of their lives while clinging to their rosaries with Our Lady of Fatima, to mitigate a LOT of what could have been an even worse scenario than what we now live. (I realize when we’re in the midst of the trials it seems things couldn’t possibly be worse.) In Almighty God’s Plan, it will get uglier, yet, He is ever faithful and He WILL break through this darkness with His LIGHT streaming everywhere as He makes all things new and we – just as Charlie has consistently and faithfully nurtured his chicks as a Mother Hen even while leading us as a shepherd, strong and true – really do a LOT, the widow’s mite LOT: everything we have, which is but each next right step at a time, when we embrace the wisdom of St. Therese by continuing to love in the little we can do before us. He’s doing quite well for himself. He is ideologically solid, at least from all he says and has a very clear way of expressing himself. I would like to see him have a big job first, though. It’s tougher than people can imagine until they have had something similar. Even though I am not sold on “gov’t. experience” being terribly meaningful, I was always leery of candidates for a big office who had not a big complex job where they had to deal with a lot of pushback in a frantic environment. I only ever signed up with one – and it was a mistake.

It saddens me to hear of Triumphalism on the threads. It was never like that before, and I haven’t had time to go back there in a long time, but perhaps I should, to help add to the unity.
We’re not going to get out of this well if we can’t work with others because they don’t pass theological muster.
I work with a lot of people who have very different beliefs than I do. We manage to get good work done. Lord have mercy on us CORAC members and help us to build unity focusing on the work at hand before us. Not how many angels dance on the head of a pin. Maybe this is why Catholics aren’t very good at evangelism?
My goal has always to have my RN before it all goes to hell and it seems that is what it’s working out to be. God’s timing is perfect.
I would think that we, the great unwashed, won’t stand for another presidential election theft and we KNOW that many states have not secured their elections. But who knows, God usually lets small things that we don’t expect cause topples.

I live and serve in my conception community ~ and I have lived and served in many other places before returning here in 2012. A handful of practicing Catholics and a handful of practicing Protestants/Evangelicals live here ~ along with many people of good will. We work together in response to any number of needs here.
Triumphalism is rare in the CORAC and ASOH community. I think that Charlie, Beckita, and others have made that clear from the outset. Sometimes the ASOH community (newbies et al) need reminders.

Amen, Sr. Bear, Actually, Brianna, as Sr. Bear expressed, it’s virtually non-existent in the ranks of CORAC. However, I quietly addressed it immediately ( edit: meaning I brought it directly to Charlie and MP) and I deeply appreciate that this has been nipped in the bud so we can dwell on God’s Goodness in all the great things that happen because of CORAC. We do have a lot of people who have come to CORAC via other opportunities to hear about us there. They then arrive without the background of all we’ve received over the years from Charlie’s writings at TNRS and ASOH. Still, we’re very much flourishing and the best news is that the dialoguing and working together are 99.9% amazingly beautiful, rewarding, and most helpful…for now and into the future!! Praying for you and your dream to finish your RN soon.

Ah well, Maggie. Of course, it’s an irony when expressed as the blog piece frames the appointment. Equally ironic is the kissing of the Papal hand in the image with PF having angrily brushed off the efforts of the Asian woman who tried to kiss his own hand in a show of respect for the papal office. Every Pope must rely on his collaborators in ministry for the Church is vast in its worldwide needs. I rather think that, then, Archbishop Bergoglio was given an opportunity to become a mover for good. I’m in the camp of those who believe God allowed the former Cardinal’s placement in the office of the Papacy to bring about a greater good, even though excruciatingly painful as it has been. Through PF’s words and deeds, the bad actors have come out of hiding and shown themselves to be who they are for God and All to see. Saddest of all is that some will be bitter-enders to their own destruction.

Oh goodness, Maggie. It was an interesting take on where we are today, yet, I find that particular site and its followers tend towards the outrage and scandals with not much heartening. So grateful for your longtime presence π and for all who have found a home here. Charlie has given us a space and nurtured the mindset of acknowledging the problems while focusing on hope, trust, and those little things we can do in this ocean of disorder we navigate.
