A few people have asked me why I have written so little about Pope Leo XIV. I operate under the theory that the head of any large organization, if he is shrewd, will spend his first year to year and a half showing the disparate members of that organization that he means them no serious harm. I call it my “don’t spook the horses” theorem. This is particularly true if the organization is already riven with dissension. Certainly, the Catholic Church and its hierarchy qualify under that standard. Most lay Catholics and many Bishops want to live the Gospel as well and authentically as they can. Yet a substantial cohort of Bishops and activists are determined to overthrow authentic Catholic doctrine and the words of Christ to conform themselves to current cultural enthusiasms. Finally, a substantial cohort of people want the consolation of ritual without being bothered to live the commands of Christ.
I was chatting with a high Church authority this week who is very orthodox who understood my point, but thought there are some abuses which are just plain wrong and need to be corrected forthwith. He is, of course, right. But I pointed out that when any group tries to abruptly impose its program you are sure to get serious backlash, using the Biden administration and its push for hard left authoritarianism, as an example. People have to first get comfortable and emotionally accept the legitimacy of a new leader before that leader can successfully start pushing the envelope. My friend noted that re-establishing the fundamentals of the faith IS the needed pushback now. In essence, we are agreed on substance but differ on method. He did not use Trump’s hard pushback against leftist supremacy as a successful example of his preferred method – but he certainly could have.
I am certainly aware of some of the suspect appointments Pope Leo has made of Bishops who are heterodox (to say the least). I get annoyed when he talks of political matters as if they were fundamentals of the faith. No matter who tells me that I must take the climate change hoax seriously, I will not. As far as the climate goes, we are janitors, not architects. One would think that, after the massive failure of the Bishops’ collective response to the Covid nonsense, leaving altars across the globe desolate, they would have a little more humility about their lack of authority over temporal things and more vigor in teaching the fundamentals of the faith and preaching for salvation. But here we are.
I also know that Pope Leo has made it very clear that Jesus Christ is – and must be – at the center of our faith. This month Cardinal Raymond Burke will celebrate the traditional Latin Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica with the approval of Pope Leo. It seems to me that the Pope has approved of synodality as a means of authentically listening to the faithful, but that it can never replace the hierarchical structure Christ appointed to govern His Church. My friend is not sure of this point, though he is hopeful I am right. (So am I.)
The point is that both those who want a Church that follows Christ’s teachings and those who want to remake the Church in the world’s image have some things they can point to. Obviously, I am among the former – but I do not think we will know what manner of Pope Leo is for another year. Is he soothing the radical dissidents before a return to the Magisterium or is he soothing people like me before yet another hard left, political turn? I don’t know. But I do know that Christ’s Church will not fall. Whether this Pope will lead a return to the fullness of the faith or is yet another stumbling block on the way to it is yet to be determined.
The first two and a half years of his papacy, I was quite the apologist for Pope Francis. I came to think him to be the worst Pope the Church has had in its entire history. I want to believe a Pope is centered in Christ. But I won’t jump near as quickly as I once would have. Neither will I be black-pilled, believing every suspect decision is an indicator of rebellion from Christ.
As I finish this, I see that Pope Leo has made a stumbling, incoherent defense of Chicago Cardinal Blaise Cupich’s effort to give radical pro-abortion Senator Dick Durbin a Catholic Achievement Award. For the moment, I choose to believe that Pope Leo was just caught off guard by a question he had not seriously considered before. If, indeed, he believes that murdering children is the same as refusing entry to illegal aliens, our long, global, nightmare is not yet over. I choose to hope for the best until I am proven wrong.
St. Paul was rightly honored by the Church for his many contributions to the faith. He was given no honors at all while he was still Saul, persecuting the Church and killing the faithful.

I was infuriated by the reaction of some supposedly conservative officials and commentators to the brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC. After Kimmel falsely intimated that Charlie Kirk’s assassin was actually MAGA, FCC head Brendan Carr said that ABC could act or the FCC might open an investigation. Several “conservatives,” including Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and more than a few commentators, said the FCC Commissioner should not be trying to suppress free speech.
I expect this sort of dishonest dissembling from Democrats: the truth is not in them. But conservatives should live to a higher standard. When Kimmel said the assassin was MAGA, it was well-known that the assassin was actually a far-left activist in a relationship with a transgender, as confirmed by every law enforcement agency involved. It is a violation of FCC regulations for a broadcast outlet to knowingly give false information about a crime. Carr should not have threatened action; he should have taken action and then revoked it if ABC corrected the problem. That, actually, is his duty under the law.
I am sick to death of “conservatives” who argue we must not enforce the law if it will provoke a hissy fit from the left but don’t defend conservative laymen from persecution for having legitimate, lawful, conservative opinions.
Did you know that every U.S. Senator knew almost from the start that the Russian collusion hoax was just that – a hoax? They did. Because of laws on revealing classified information, every single Republican Senator chose to let the hoax against Donald Trump proceed rather than tell the truth and take the consequences while sparing the country this toxic, debilitating lie for almost three years. There were no “profiles in courage” among Republican Senators during that hoax. They knew – and refused to reveal their knowledge for fear it might cost them their influence. Not near as bad as Democrats who knowingly perpetrated the lie, but not much of a defense against the tyrannical ambitions of the left.
I pray that the supposed defenders of the republic will find their footing, but right now they disgust me.

The federal government is supposedly “shut down” today – and we still have several orders of magnitude more government than the founders of the republic said it was safe for a free people to have. I am not amused.

Some people seem to think that the Christian concept of forgiving evil-doers must be synonymous with enabling that evil. It is not. Forgiving an evil-doer leaves room for him to seek redemption. It does not – and cannot – relieve him of consequences. If it does, it is just a program to compound evil and violence throughout our culture. That’s a leftist ideal, not a conservative or Christian one.
Vengeance is, indeed, the Lord’s. Justice is the duty of all of us. Enabling evil is to betray those of genuine honor. While vengeance is God’s, I believe we all have a duty to be the instruments to deliver His justice.

The Blood of Christ has not gone anemic. If we refuse to be vigorous in defense of honor, liberty, and justice, we are enablers of society’s collapse into nihilism and evil. We had best think long and hard about that rather than just speaking in easy platitudes.
I have said repeatedly that the power of evil has been broken – and I mean it. I have also said that does not mean that the battle is over, but rather that the final battle with evil has finally begun. The question now is whether we have the fortitude and vigor to prevail when God, Himself, has largely cleared the field. Evil is shriekingly loud and vigorously active now that its power is broken. We will not defeat it by timidly deferring to its sensibilities.
If communication goes out for any length of time, meet outside your local Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Tell friends at Church now in case you can’t then. CORAC teams will be out looking for people to gather in and work with.

As always, you hit some nails on the head. Wait & see more from this Pope. The FCC, what a joke! Remember when the I Love Lucy set showed their bedroom with twin beds?! Protected from lies then?-I don’t know, but at least there was decency. Also, I have said to myself, yes, all of Congress had to know of the hoax perpetrated on Trump all along, just as they all knew for years that Biden was no longer mentally sound. I think all of them were afraid of what Trump might do, knowing his strong personality. But now, I think many are glad of what Trump and his administration are doing. I hope he/his administration use this shut-down as an opportunity to shrink the government even more since Congress/Dems will not be able to do anything about it. One thing I don’t understand, how is it that if the power of evil is broken, if it still is functioning as strong or stronger as ever? Shouldn’t it be depleting? (I know of the 100 yr reign.) I’m not sure the “good guys” are winning anything yet, unless you consider Trump’s wins in the Supreme Court. Glenn Beck says all evil forces are working together, even those who don’t like each other, ie China, Hamas, Socialists, Communists, etal., to bring down our Republic. Please comment on this.

It is strange to me that people really have a hard time understanding that when the power of evil is broken, that is when it fights the hardest. It can effectively no longer recruit new adherents…it just has to go with what it has – and if it can’t prevail with what it has, it dies.
The power of England over France in the 100 years war was broken when St. Joan of Arc lifted the siege at Orleans…but the battle went on for over 30 more years.
The power of Nazi Germany was broken when it invaded Poland. But the worst of the battle was ahead over the next five years.
Power is broken when an evil-doer can no longer deceive people of good will that they mean no harm. That is when the ugliness becomes most overt. The question then becomes whether the people targeted by the evil-doers have the will and the fortitude to prevail. If they do, evil can no longer prevail. We are at that point now. So, at least to my mind, it should be no surprise that evil-doers should be more frantic, trying to accomplish by force and terror what they no longer have any real chance of accomplishing by persuasion.

John, think about how many times evil manifests it’s dislike when things don’t go their way? At the very beginning the fallen angels rebelled and a “war broke out in heaven” because they disliked Gods plan. From then on it’s been us against them. They are quieter when they have the upper hand scheming beneath the radar when things are going their way but still wrecking everything they touch because it is their nature to lie, steal, kill and destroy. But they then manifest into open chaos when found out where upon they will ” burn it all down” and take their losses (followers) with them once their game is exposed. In the end, that’s all they got. The mystery of iniquity is how God works good from evil. The cross is the epitome of this mystery and is key to realizing just how cleaver God is in using His creatures to fulfill His designs. If God gave us everything we would be spoiled coddled selfish brats and technically slaves that have no choice. As sons and daughters of God, we are free of this slavery but not free of evil in the world. If He took away our choices we would not be free but slaves to His will. He wants us to choose His perfect will and not be like the rest of creation that is locked in its nature by what we call ” instinct”. Creatures have no choice but to be what they were created to be but we are given a choice and it pleases God to allow us the freedom to choose our own destiny. Evil wants us to choose it and that is why we see such chaos now in this gender confusion, etc But in order to gain ” merit” we must have something to merit by. Thus the struggle between good and evil that will not end until THE end.

Well, unfortunately Pope Leo XIV does not look too promising. As a bishop, he was a supporter of Cardinal Cupich, recently the pope stated that he is on a different political end compared to his Trump supporting brother, approved and let lgtbq+ pilgrimage in St. Peter’s Basilica, stated that church is not ready for affirming lgbtq+ because people are not ready for that (not because it is sinful), praised pope Francis and stated that pope Francis is with Jesus in heaven, and recently…blessed a chunk of ice at a global climate change summit. Yet if he does not object to traditional Latin mass, that would be a big positive progress compared to the predecessor, maybe it will take a few popes to get another Leo XIII or John Paul II … Since St. Peter, more than 50% of popes have not been canonized for a reason.

Dang Charlie, I know you said that this would look like the END but that it is not. Some of my non-RC Christian friends, especially one down south, are telling me to prepare to be air lifted out by Jesus. One even believes that if I stubbornly remain RC that I will be left behind. This morning Boston radio was talking about the 800 lb gorilla staring us in the face (religion of peace). If this isn’t the end then it’s an incredible dress rehearsal. Europe especially seems beyond repair. The shire is awakening but the drums in the deep grow louder each day. Jim C.

Ha, mvis…one of the things I get most irritated about is the “Rapture.” That doctrine was formulated in America in the 1830’s. Before that no Christian – Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox – believed such a thing. It was one of many Protestant inventions. It has become, for many evangelical Protestant groups, normative.
I hate it because it gives a deadly dangerous false hope to many otherwise good-willed people. What happens when things get brutal and a genuinely good-willed person is not “taken up”? They may go into existential despair – at the worst possible moment. We Catholics have a variation on that theme that is even more recent…the perversion of the idea of refuges as a place that all the good people will be taken to by angels to be safe as Armageddon plays out.
For the most part, the people who believe such things are the same people who know the very least about the history and doctrine of Christianity – but are smugly convinced they know it all. I consider it to be one of satan’s most brilliant ploys, designed to get a final gleaning of souls lost as he decisively loses the battle of Armageddon.
We are in the battle until the end. If we devise ways to protect ourselves from that reality, we are engaging in mere fantasy to excuse our refusal to proclaim the Gospel actively, in season and out. There WILL be a rapture, as it is described, but it does not come until long after the battle is over and just as the actual end commences. He who will be saved is he who endures to the end. If you are coming up with ways by which you will be saved without having to endure you are kidding yourself, but not kidding God. I do not condemn that as often as I should because so many good-willed people have wrapped themselves around this pseudo-soothing, recent belief.

Yes, Charlie, this “rapture” thing saddens me because our oldest, dearest friends (and family) believe in it. What is worst of all, the Mom, a fellow graduate of our Catholic college, left the Church, and died without the Last Rites. All I can do is pray for her, and all of them.
As I recall, they pin the whole idea on one or more particular Scriptures, for which the Catholic Church has no such interpretation.

Both guilty outcomes are told to me by my politically independent neighbor judge to be unequivocally obvious.
The only plausible chances for acquittal are leftist idealogues among the judges and/or the jury members.
Should acquittals/hung juries occur, courtroom justice will be seen by many of the populace as having crossed the Rubicon into outcomes being driven by highly partisan politics. Such a realization by millions of Americans may break the back of public confidence in the judiciary.
If our streets are unsafe, our educational institutions corrupted, our elections fraudulent, and lawless behaviour is rampant, the manufactured failure of the judicial system may be the powerful catalyst for societal violence.
My neighbor opined that if you are too slow and too docile in your response to a mugger’s attack, you will be robbed, likely injured, and possibly murdered. His analogy is appropriate to the present, compounded consequences of lawlessness and lawfare.
I asked, “What is the solution?”
I agree with his plea that we continue to fearlessly speak out for goodness and justice, and we pray for both Divine intervention and for the safety of the bold, brave, public champions of rightousness who lead the unending fight against the DS [Deep State] evil that constantly threatens us.
