Yesterday morning I saw the full video of Iryna Zarutska’s murder on the Charlotte train for the first time. Though not nearly as gruesome as I feared, it was one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen. The vicious man stabbed her in the neck from behind three or  four times in a raw frenzy. At first, she looks up in (literally) wounded bewilderment wondering what has happened. At this point she may have thought he had just hit her. Then she sees spots of blood on her slacks and realizes she is badly hurt. You can almost see the magnitude of the pain wave over her. She lifts her hands to her face in forlorn desolation, deeply despairing. Then she starts fading and tilts, almost gently, into her seat, from where she falls to the floor and her death.

I thought very hard about linking to the full video here, for I think we need to begin to look with cold clarity at what we have wrought, instead of forever looking away. But I can’t bring myself to do it just yet.

I was in a strategic discussion with a key colleague when word came that Charlie Kirk had been shot in Utah. We finished talking and I saw the distant video of the assassination. But then I saw a close-up video of it. After Kirk was hit, a geyser of blood gushed forth from the left side of his neck. I could not see how he could survive that, but I prayed that he might. It was not to be.

I have said that the power of evil is broken…and so it is. I think some have interpreted that to mean that the fight is over. Truth is, it has just begun. When evil’s power is broken it almost never slinks away quietly. It shrieks, lashes out, hisses, and fights until it is decimated, desperate to take all to perdition with it that it can. It will not be defeated until we take it seriously.

I think of the clouding over of men’s minds I spoke of in my last piece this week. It is a mystery when Scripture says that God “hardens” some men’s hearts. If God wills all men to salvation, why would He harden the hearts of some at particular times in salvation history? I don’t think God hardens the hearts of any whose hearts are not already hard – and the hardening He does adds a blindness so they cannot see the actual consequences of their own demonic fury. Though that would explain the hardening, it obviously causes things to get worse, in the short term, for the rest of us. But when this sort of madness comes over a culture, the more intense it gets the quicker it burns out, so it is a mercy of sorts – but a right hard one. The intentional clouding over of men’s minds is the only thing that makes sense to me right now. I see reporters on the left that I knew and respected 20 and 30 years ago – and almost all have succumbed to the madness. Same thing with some Democrat officials I used to sometimes collaborate with. There is a blindness and a rage there that was once uncharacteristic and I would never have anticipated..

I think of when I was a boy of 12 and the Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago, just 50 miles south of my far north suburban home. There was out of control rioting at that convention that did not start dying out until the late Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered his police to shoot to wound looters and shoot to kill arsonists. He was a Democrat – but those were in the days when Democrats and Republicans often offered serious, responsible men. Thirty-six people (that we know of) were murdered during the “mostly peaceful protests” of the “summer of love” in 2020. Was there any official, Democrat, Republican, or Independent willing to give such an order then to stop the mayhem? No. We are no longer a serious people.

I have been saying for well over a decade that we have entered Armageddon. It is NOT the same thing as the Apocalypse, which is the actual end. Armageddon is the final, decisive battle between good and evil which precedes the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart and the opening of the great era of peace. It is critically important for many reasons – but ultimately because it is literally our last chance. Once the era of peace begins, the next mass falling away from the faith will herald the Apocalypse.

I have told you several times of my encounter in July of 2000, when my angel, agitated with me, told me animatedly that, “You must tell them true and they must choose or perish.” I think this week, we have crossed into the final time of mercy for choosing. Leftist activists, media, and office holders have shown nakedly who they are. It has done for them what the invasion of Poland did for Adolf Hitler: revealed them for the demonically evil lunatics they are and removed all excuses for ordinary, honest people to have any truck with them – other then to fight, defeat, and then banish them from civil society altogether. Leftist activists have been cheering and making jokes about Kirk’s murder. I can’t think of a single time conservatives did something as disgusting as that. Leftist media has busied itself making excuses for the murderers – and, incredibly, intimating that either Donald Trump or Charlie Kirk, himself, is responsible for his murder. If you believe the media about a single thing after this display, you are probably irremediably stupid and vicious. Democratic officials who, just a couple of weeks ago, were cursing and condemning people for praying after the transgender murdered schoolchildren at a Mass in Minnesota, are now piously offering their “thoughts and prayers” for Kirk and his family. The skinsuit of piety is fooling no one any more. We heard what you really think of prayer just a few weeks ago. We all know that the neighborhood headquarters for vicious hate is probably at the house that has the “Hate has no home here” yard sign. I guess a headquarters is not the same as a home.

I mentioned in my last piece that being a serious student of history gives little comfort. All the great and terrible “isms” since the French Revolution have piously pretended to be for the people and to be of the highest moral virtue to justify their ongoing murderous rage at being contradicted. The French revolutionaries loved to opine about the rights of man and universal brotherhood as they gleefully sent men, women, and children – yes, children – to be murdered at the guillotine. Lenin was glad to execute anyone who contradicted him, leading to Stalin’s cheerful assurance that you had to break some eggs to make an omelette. Hitler spent a decade before the holocaust explaining why the Jews were responsible for every ill Germany suffered – and self-righteously proclaimed everything he did was for the noble, German people. In Rwanda, the Hutus spent years smearing and sliming the Tutsis before breaking out in genocidal rage, hacking Tutsi neighbors to death. In America, leftists have been smearing conservatives as fascists, racists, and various types of “phobes” for almost two generations. I always knew they were stoking their rage to actually start killing those who did not submit to them. Combine angry attitude, little actual knowledge, and preening self-righteousness and this is always the end game. In New York City, self-righteous ignorant orcs are about to elect an open socialist as mayor. I give it little more than a year before the rest of the state and its neighbors start begging Trump to build a wall around the new Gotham City.

At this point, anyone who does not realize we are fighting demonic powers and principalities just isn’t paying attention at all. This week, God has allowed the issue to be forced. If we take the lesson, the establishment media that has been terminally ill for so long, will finally die, collapsing in on itself. The Democratic Party, having been subject to a hostile takeover by demonic forces, will die. No midterm hope for you boys. In time, an honest party for responsible liberals will rise to take its place. Activists who engage in fiery, but “mostly peaceful” murderous protests will hear responsible officials start to give orders to shoot active offenders.

Above all, I will tolerate no more lectures in crackpot theology from sinister atheists telling me what I must do to be a “good Christian.” I will bear no lectures on tolerance from people who eagerly offer to punch me in the face. Nor should you. Recognize calls for both sides to cool down as the cynical dodge it is by leftists seeking to escape accountability for their war on God and freedom.

I just pray that our hierarchy and Priests understand where we are, what time it is, and find both their chest and their spines.

John Adams said, just after the Constitutional Convention, that, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” We are not the people we should be. Pray that God helps us become that people. With His help, do your part.  If we do, we will truly be great again, both in word and in deed.

  1. Thank you, Charlie. It is ever a sweet balm to hear from you when the going gets tougher. I thought yesterday’s murder of Charlie Kirk was a signal that we have entered a deeper level of danger. The screenshots of Lefties chatting so casually on social media as they brainstorm the list of whom to eliminate next from the pool of conservatives who are brave truth tellers confirms for me how this worldwide war fought on cultural lines has become kinetic for us in this country. May we each respond fully to God in being and doing what we are called to be and do.

    1. Lots of folks at daily Mass, today. I was thinking what if all these folks… then I thought of all CORAC folks…then I thought of ALL CATHOLICS would pray the prayer of St. Gertrude for the conversion of the extreme lefty liberals. Then perhaps God would hear our prayers, and heal our land, and we wouldn’t have to have worse in order to have better. I’d much rather they be converted than be lost.

      Anyway, I will. Maybe lots of y’all already pray for the conversion of sinners, but I’m just beginning.

      Eternal Father, I offer thee the most precious blood of thy divine son Jesus, in union with masses said thoughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, for those in my own home and in my family. Amen.

      If one prayer, said one time, can rescue 1000 souls from Purgatory, surely God will rescue sinners everywhere!

      1. Even as a kid, Our Lady captured my heart to pray for the conversion of people. It was a mighty bonus which came from attending a Catholic grade school, a Catholic high school and a Catholic college.

        I love the spirit of mercy you express, Nance. Blessed are they who experience graces being poured out upon them because of you!!

        I wish there was, but there really is no magic bullet prayer which will get the lost to convert. No matter the prayer, one’s heart – sincere and humble while rooted in unwavering faith -is what works in tandem with the power of the Holy Spirit to bring about change in people. Even then, the openness of the receiver m.u.s.t. be in gear for the graces to work in him.

        The Church does not officially teach or guarantee that the prayer revealed to St. Gertrude will save 1,000 souls. This idea sets up God as a slot machine. Prayer in; (ching, ching) now we have 1,000 souls out of trouble. But I know that’s not your heart, Nance. It’s just the mistaken understanding many have promoted about these sorts of statements attributed to the saints. Jesus, Himself, spoke in hyperbole and metaphors to teach and exhort us. One of my favorites is His challenge that we would embrace a faith so unshakeable it could move mountains. With that in mind, we can offer St. Gertrude’s prayer, or any prayer at all, while honoring the first and great commandment: “”You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” and leave every prayer in the Mercy of God. In this, we have done a great work, hidden in the little we can do in these sobering days of trials and tribulations.

        2. The promise Christ made to St. Gertrude for souls in purgatory was for her. It does not guarantee that others who say it will have the same result but pious souls (like Gertrude) gain more effect by virtue of their sanctity. One can say the prayer and our Lord will use it according to the efficacy He deems appropriate. The Church has no official position on its merits but because the prayer has an ecclesial approval from a bishop he is approving the theological soundness of the prayer, not the results of another person, other than St. Gertrude, saying that prayer. The efficacy of one’s prayers is directly related to the level of sanctity and virtue possessed by the individual, so it is possible to release a multitude of souls or just a few. In this respect, all mystical promises can be effective below or even beyond the promises given! So don’t give up on any prayer, sacramental or promise from Heaven based on a lack of an official church position (unless negative). The Church many times withholds discernment until the fruits of such promises are realized.

            2. Sorry, somehow I must have hit send…Oops. Anyway a big to do by a big saint, I THINK it was Philip Neri, a whole group praying an indulgenced prayer. When they were finished, God told him that he and one little old lady in the back earned the indulgence. The whole rest of the crowd (probably representing us) did not.

              What about the “promises” to prayers made after Pope Leo XIII’s time? Flame of Love? Divine Will? First Saturdays?

              I made one of those guaranteed novenas for my son. Afterward, nothing happened. I asked the Good Lord about it and the word I got (NOT out loud) was that He, God, can send the grace, but He will not force the issue.

              Me, I wish He would just force the issue! But, Praise God, I am not God! I will just keep praying and try to fill Mary’s coffers and let Heaven do the work.

              1. Right there with you, Nance, in sending up the prayers and trusting that God will do everything possible to reclaim His children. His thoughts and infinite imagination are, most often, so beyond any human capability to conceive. Why should I limit Him in asking for things to be done my way, in my timing?

                As for the novena for your son, while nothing happened right away, it’s so like God to work with another’s free will in a fashion that brings about fulfillment further down the road. After all, HE loves us and our sons and daughters as well as our other family members and the whole human race with a love supreme to our own, a perfect Love beyond all telling.

              2. Nance, I know what you mean about ” forcing ” the issue. For many decades my son was out of the church and in deep sin. I prayed about it but never wanted him to ” suffer the consequences” (ie; go to jail) because I knew how horrible it is in that environment. One day I prayed that if that was what it took to convert him, thy will be done. Very quickly he was arrested and spent 9 months in prison ( but after 2 years in limbo awaiting trial during the Covid epidemic period when the courts were shut down). So technically, he was under the thumb of the law for almost 3 years and is now on probation. But guess what?? He has returned to the church in a big way!

                The moral of the story is sometimes God waits on our will or the final retracting of our inhibitions to send out that grace needed to bring about a conversion. I’ve heard this is true in some exorcisms when it took the conversion of the whole family to finally free the child from the possession. In this I recognized MY lack of trust in His will over my sons conversion and my fear for something that was apparently necessary for my son to experience in order to break free of his captivity to sin. And through this, we BOTH grew in grace and wisdom!

  2. may God rest Charlie Kirk’s soul. I’m thinking of him as being martyred…

    In reference to God hardening hearts, I think of it as God’s permissive will, rather than his perfect will.

    classically, Exodus 7:3 is written as God did it directly, but right or wrong, I think of it as God “allowing” the farro to harden his own heart using his “permissive” will.

  4. I did not really follow Charlie Kirk, but knew of him and had seen some of his debates, but his murder gripped my heart with such pain. I think your title for this piece is so appropriate. With this assassination the world has shifted. I beg God for His grace for all faithful to choose wisely, and stand as steadfast as Charlie Kirk did. May he rest in peace.

    1. My friend, David Daleiden had gotten friendly with him this last year. It shook him up to see a friend – and someone from his generational cohort – so casually murdered. Tough thing to contemplate when you give a lot of talks and speeches from a traditional perspective. The left hs given way to evil and want to kill us. One side must win in this great battle and the other lose.

  7. Charlie this is yet a really great piece you wrote and so very sad too! My spirit is full of despair And anxiety at the moment from hearing the news of Charlie and the young Ukraine girl😫. I just keep doing what you told us to do long ago, acknowledge God, take the next right step and try to be a sign of hope. Then I offer up to God my heavy heart for the conversion of sinners.

    I have somehow developed this grocery store ministry over the years, probably because I’m a social butterfly 😂 but I think even more so, I try to explain to people what you have told us is coming aka the era of peace, and just be kind to people I meet that look down in the dumps.

    I have to confess that yesterday I waved hello to a young man full of really strange tats that looked so sad and as I did so I wondered if he’d shoot me or knife me to death😂😂😂

    I think we all have to be ready and prepared for anything these days.

    Personally, I’m really surprised at the hatred and evilness from our young people. I’ve heard lately that there are a lot of the hating sort! Sort of like a movement!

    I guess we reap what we sew. 😫

    1. Doug, my thoughts exactly! May God have mercy on us all. I heard that the shooter’s Dad and his minister turned that young man in. That must have been so hard to do.

      May Charlie Kirk’s blood be the impetus for a truly Great Revival, a great Triumph for Mary where Christians of all denominations realize we are on the same side.

One piece of hopeful news from a blue state: I know polling is not to be trusted 100% but when the margin of difference between those voting for a Republican vs. a Democrat in New Jersey is down to 2 points (!) there is a real chance we may kick the abortion hungry dems out of power in our beautiful state. Please pray for New Jersey (and Virginia, too) that we may rid our states of these people in November.

  13. I always saw that phrase “God hardened their heart”, not as a positive action God’s part, but as person’s reaction to God’s love. It seems that these radical leftists are so opposed to God and His love that they devolve into 180 deg opposition. That said the only tools we possess are love and prayer even at the cost of our own blood.

  15. I comment here only rarely (when I have something to say that I think is helpful or interesting). But one thing that has continually struck me since Wednesday is how the left refuses to make any distinctions on the right.

    To them, Fuentes and Kirk are the exact same as both have proven effective at preventing the left from wielding political power. The thing is, more and more on the right are being pushed into the groups that the left accuses us all of being.

    Without God, I think we would destroy ourselves completely. With Him, I still think things are going to get very very ugly.

  16. Initially I was enraged and wished the assassin was executed asap in a painful way. Yet, we need to pray for this college kid for conversion, and for his family as well. He might be sentenced to death penalty, which will be just, yet we got to pray for conversion of this young man so he is not lost for eternity…

    What a shame the Democrats on the House floor were screaming and didn’t want to say prayer in honor of Charlie Kirk!

  17. Great title. It is the wake up call for many a person. We are voting here Tuesday for the City Council and School Committee in my small city in MA. Both elected bodies have been taken over by young radical marxists- mostly by ballot harvesting. We have done our best to overcome it this preliminary. I am praying that God will inspire the hearts of those who do not normally vote in local elections to step up and do the right thing. Also hoping that the people who do vote will see the light after the gruesome events of this week. We shall see.

    1. Saul was an honest man who, in true ignorance, thought he was doing what was right by working to suppress Christian ideas. Comparatively, such a one is easy to convert when graces wash over him.

      1. It is the very reason why Saul became the great Apostle Paul. His zeal for righteousness was entirely unencumbered by wanting to prove whatever dumb thing he had ever said right. He truly wanted righteousness…and when he found he was wrong, he did not try to prove wrong was right, but sought passionately to follow the right.

  20. I’m in Singapore and Thailand as these tragedies are happening and I started reflecting on what freedom and civilization mean. What marks a free and civilized society? America “the land of the free” means you have to ride public transportation with the wariness of a prisoner in the yard for his daily exercise. I don’t let people get behind me in public buses and I stand with my back to the wall in the NYC subway lest someone shove me onto the track. You have people being assassinated in church and during a debate, followed by celebration or excuses. Thailand and Singapore both rank under 50 in Freedom House’s “freedom score”, yet things like that don’t happen here. There are fewer murders in Singapore this year than in Chicago the last week. Public bicycles in Thailand aren’t even locked…just lined up in a neat row for rental. People bow and smile, they don’t insult and mock. I’ve yet to see a person bent over from fentanyl or smelled a homeless camp from a mile away. What happens in US cities simply wouldn’t be tolerated here and it wouldn’t be excused. People are not rich but they are dignified. Even the Thai transgenders are more well adjusted…they don’t rage and demand to be called women, they just quietly stay in their own category. What I see here is not perfection but it’s civilized people. I look at the US and that’s not what I see, but I hope it can change

      2. Nance, you may need to have an *account* on Substack, but most stacks have a free subscribe. That can’t be activated without a Substack account.

        However, most stacks show a query for subscribing to that stack when you go there, and if you look carefully at the bottom of that query box, you will see a “No, thanks” link you can click to go through the Subscribe dialog box to the person’s substack account for free and without subscribing.

    I have been pondering the following from your “The World’s Babel Moment Approaches” writing a couple of posts back:

    “I have thought long and hard about the world’s trajectory. It seems to me that God gave us a great gift, an opportunity for people of good will to start pushing back on the right track to rebuild a healthy culture. Still, I think we have a massive collapse coming, because we really are not the people we should be. Our priorities are all messed up. So I have pondered, how does God both encourage us and rebuke us simultaneously, forcing us to get our minds right?”

    Pondering whether God (in His permissive will – He did NOT will this evil, I know that) allowed this past weeks events to occur in order to encourage us toward that rebuild using the great example of Charlie Kirk.

    1. It is a very tough thing to contemplate…unless you truly and deeply realize that life, death, and the afterlife are one continuum, Becky. Once we are conceived we are immortal. We are given free will, so we choose where we will spend eternity. Some immediately to heaven, some immediately to hell, but most to purgatory for a time (and remember, all in purgatory ultimately go to heaven).

      It is horrible that this happened, but look at the new commitment of so many people to what is right and life-giving. Since God will not thwart our free will, evil exists in the world. Charlie chose God.

      I am of the opinion that all people of good will ultimately get to heaven. God is not one to allow the good to slip away (thank God for purgatory!) Sorrowfully, we see many choose evil entirely, self-will run amok, and treating power as the greatest of all goods. They condemn themselves, giving public witness of their self-condemnation, even as they think they are winning. But in their evil acts, they expose themselves and drive those who are lukewarm to faith, while driving to greater frenzy those who, like them, have chosen evil as the only meaning in their lives.

      We have seen plenty of both since the assassination. But have you noted the baffled rage of people who have been fired for their celebration of the assassination? They have been so used to cavorting without consequence that they are shocked that decency is re-asserting itself with force. But it is. God most assuredly did not will Charlie’s death, but He has used it to spark a revival in those who had become lukewarm in upholding His teachings.

  32. I didn’t see it mentioned here yet, but yesterday I was excited to see what Michael Brown wrote on Spiritdaily. He had a quote from his book, from what Maria Esperanza told him in 2003. It was about “an innocent person whom (Jesus) loves a lot will die, an innocent person. This will shock the world, move the world.” She said it would occur in 10 to 20 years, and it would precede an “awakening”. It was amazing and wonderful to read that b/c we see people around the world reacting, South Korea, England, and all over. We know the devil will not give up without a battle, as “our” Charlie says, but I found it be be hopeful and meaningful. I’m sure many felt as I did, the day Charlie was murdered, that something awful but powerful had happened. I can’t even describe it.

From Feb. 11, 2011 to Aug. 21, 2012, he walked 3,200 miles across the country, sleeping in the woods, meeting people and praying as he went. He writes on cultural, global and political issues from an orthodox Catholic perspective. He emphasizes that we find God most surely through the ordinary, doing the little things we should with faith and fidelity. His constant refrain is that, to live real joy, we must acknowledge God, take the next right step, and be a sign of hope to those around us. He lives in the Archdiocese of Denver in the United States.
