The Seven Stages of Renewal

South Bend, Indiana – In the 19th Chapter of 1 Kings, the prophet, Elijah, goes up in the mountain in search of God. While there he is buffeted by ferocious winds, a big earthquake, and the outbreak of a terrible fire. But God was in none of these. When a still, small whisper came to him, Elijah went out in adoration, for here was the Lord God.

The modern world and the modern church is buffeted by heavy winds, terrible quakes, and ravenous fires. God has sovereignty over all these things, but that is not where He is. Do not go looking for Him there or become distracted by the fearful violence of the winds, quakes and fires around you. I speak of these things, but I try to keep us focused on God’s still, small voice – which we find in the little things we can do to make life a little better and a little more joyful for those around us.

Let’s take a look at some of the winds and waves…

A lot of very serious people are giving me their assessment of when, exactly, everything will go ka-flooey. They are also telling me what they are doing in hopes of cushioning themselves from the consequences of complete social collapse.

I have said, from the beginning, that this was coming. It has come to a head later than I expected but much quicker than almost all the rest of the world believed possible. Far more important than the precise timing of specific events is the purpose behind each of those events. It is to bring as many of us back to God as is possible by our internal dispositions. God is changing our way of thinking, if we allow it. Let us call it the seven stages of renewal…

First, reveal the depth of the rot. While that pot has been bubbling for almost a century, it finally came to full boil in late 2017 with the “me-too” revelations throughout entertainment, politics and news media. But this was just the beginning. We saw, once the Russian collusion hoax was revealed to be just that – a hoax – that the institutions we have long relied on are no longer working for the public good, but in an organized grasp for power over all of us. The news media lies all the time about everything. Gov’t bureaucrats serve neither the people nor their elected superiors: they work to enslave us and choose their own allies to rule us, while relentlessly working to topple anyone outside the cabal who accidentally wins election. Credentialed Churchmen work to topple Scripture and the Gospels to remake the “faith” into their own image. In their hands, Jesus is demoted from God to front man for their progressive project. You cannot change this. Rather, God wills you to see it with clarity that you may advance to the second stage.

Second, you are forced to choose where you stand. While instinctively quick in most people, this stage takes time to play out for two reasons. Most people, even if solidly grounded in their faith, desperately want to believe that things will smooth over. Who wants to believe they will have to actually fight for their most foundational beliefs? While it may seem this breeds nothing but raw paralysis, it also gives time for those who are honestly misled to literally get right with God. As Mark Twain said, it is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. As I have often said, nothing is lost in God’s economy – so God gives time for those who have an honest heart but a foolish head to choose well. If they are not eaten up with narcissistic hubris, many will. Those who persist in believing, contra the growing evidence around them, that they – not God – are the source of all wisdom will become part of the ash heap of salvation history. Before this step is fully completed in the bulk of humanity the next step begins.

Third, you must publicly declare yourself. It avails nothing to believe in God while keeping it to yourself, as Gideon found out before he stepped it up. As the Apostle says, “Even the demons believe – and tremble.” (James 2:19) Your choice must be followed by declaration and action or it is just an evasion of your active duty before God.

Fourth, battle begins. As the lines are drawn with growing clarity, subtle subversion gives way to overt attacks. That does not mean efforts to deceive cease, but the deception is far more brazen. Attackers twist language, using the semantics of liberty and faith in their efforts to subvert it all. Censorship is touted to “save our democracy.” Biblically forbidden sexuality is endorsed in the name of “tolerance.” It is largely a more concentrated form of the old, “evil is good and good is evil” play. It only fools those who are already committed to evil. It fortifies the resolve of those who are committed to God. It does, however, confuse those meek souls who desperately want to believe that, in the face of determined evil, there can be some compromise between good and evil. Some of these succumb to the siren song of evil while others awake to the danger before them and re-commit to God. After the initial confusion and chaos, this stage solidifies the lines of the battle.

Fifth, people realize there is no place of safety. The forces of aggression will not stop and are not at all shamed or slowed when their depredations are fully revealed. Even as people realize the battle cannot be stopped; that there will be no peace until one side has prevailed and the other defeated, some timid souls still hope to find safety by keeping their heads down. But the forces of evil now no longer demand mere tolerance for their depredations; they will only accept outright endorsement and participation. Those who try to insist on neutrality after this stage commences will be swept away by the forces of evil, with little help from the forces of good which they have determinedly held at arm’s length in hopes of avoiding trouble.

Sixth, people begin to mount plans for defense. Having deceived themselves for so long that everything was going to smooth out, they are now shocked into action, realizing that it is not going to go away if they just ignore it all. Unfortunately, the action most choose initially is panicked and childish. Most begin devising a plan of escape that counts entirely on their cleverness and not at all on God. A little wisdom would tell them that if they were not clever enough to see that this was NOT just the normal give-and-take of politics it is a fool’s game to make their cleverness the foundation of their defense. A smaller group retreats into a restless search for signs, for “messages from heaven” that will tell how God is going to do everything for us to get us out of the mess our neglect and avarice have created. In short, they double down on the neglect that got us here but now call that neglect “faith.” This is the most chaotic stage of all – and would be terribly prolonged if not for God’s mercy and grace.

Seventh, the mature ora et labora – or pray and work – stage. Those who work furiously from their own cleverness may spend all day mapping out how to feed the multitude with a couple of fish and a crust of bread but, despite their exhaustive efforts, all will go hungry. Those who spin ever more dire or hopeful pronouncements from heaven will ignore their constant failure and keep spinning in the void. Even the best, most clear-sighted among us still see as through a glass, darkly. The worst just relentlessly spin fantasies, either to terrify the masses or give false hope to themselves. The disengaged gear may spin furiously, but until it engages, it won’t move anything. Ora et labora. Without God, our labors are in vain. Without work, God’s grace has nothing to anoint. When we grow wise enough to know that it is all way too big for us, but do the little we can right in front of us, trusting to Him for all that we genuinely can’t do, God’s grace will take up residence among us. The force of 10,000 evil empires cannot withstand the power of  a tiny smidgeon of God’s grace. Ora et labora. Not when we say it, but when we live it – without fear and without expectation, but simply because that is what God calls us to – is when satan and his evil will be swept away by the tidal wave of God’s grace.

Then, and only then, will we be properly attired and ready for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart. We will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living because we will be the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. And then will open a new era of real peace, prosperity and brotherhood under God among men. Cast away childish things and become heralds of the Triumph.

From the beginning, I founded CORAC as a foundational tool to live ora et labora. I have little sympathy for survivalism. Most survivalists won’t. Though I have – and continue – to live a life of profound mysticism, my mysticism tells me it is time to work, to trust God when I can’t even see the step right in front of me, to hoe my little garden because it is what God calls me to do right now and until He reveals His hand. If you must have a sign or a formula, that is what I have. Join me.

Ora et labora.

Thanks to your generosity, we have enough in the bank at CORAC to cover April now. I hope to get May covered before we finish the latest fund-raising drive. I have two major projects I have been trying to work on for CORAC’s priorities this year. First is drilling down to the local level more intensely. Second is to produce a manual on how local people can develop an effective and efficient means of exchange – a form of emergency currency – if the financial system completely melts down, as even many establishment thinkers now fear. Alas, while I have these largely built in my head, I have found I just cannot get it done while on the road. I need lengthy periods of uninterrupted concentration to flesh it all out. To that end, I will be holed up at an undisclosed location near the mountains after Easter for the rest of April to get it done. Last year my big spring project was to get the Brazen Serpent Prayer finished, prayer cards designed, produced and distributed. That is dwarfed by either of these projects (and they are not the only big ones I have to finish during my April sojourn). Sr. Marie Ursula, head of the CORAC National Prayer Team, has put together a beautiful Brazen Serpent Prayer Rosary.

Some people speak to me about my “ministry.” I think, rather, that I am a sort of spark, encouraging all of you to launch a thousand small ministries, each caring for those around you in community and fortifying the structure of the faith as Christ directed. So, if you can, donate to your ministries. If you can’t, donate your time or encourage your friends who can to join CORAC and help renew the faith and face of the earth.

If communication goes out for any length of time, meet outside your local Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Tell friends at Church now in case you can’t then. CORAC teams will be out looking for people to gather in and work with.

  4. I love this so, so much. I think this is my very favorite post in a long time.

    I equate The Next Right Step with AA and Alanon recovery speak. My sponsor always used to say to me, “Where are your feet? That’s where you are.” Meaning, Briana, do what’s been given to you for THIS day (this moment) to do. Stop imaging yourself in next week or next year with pretend solutions or disasters. (this is not to say you don’t make Drs appointments or go to school or be wise) Sure enough as I got right up on the crux of the conflict God had made a way through.

    Where are my feet? That’s where I am got me out of NJ, down to FL, finishing up my RN, and building a beautiful life down here. So don’t think you don’t travel with those feet-you just allow God to direct your path.

    I’ve always been a Benedictine at heart. Ora et Labora.

  11. Charlie . . . I have a difficult time seeing everything going “ka-flooey”, at least in this country. I do agree the pot “finally came to a boil”. I think it is just going to keep boiling and bubbling over since there seems to be no lid on it to make the pressure build up to the point of ka-flooey. The only possible lid would be a government enforced lid which might have been possible had not Trump succeeded in the big 2016 upset combined with Elon’s Twitter takeover. Moreover, the deep-state is hamstrung with the USA because of the 2nd Amendment.

    I have vacillated since the stolen 2020 election on the possibility of the ka-flooey, and finally decided last autumn it won’t happen. I believe the pot will continue boiling, bubbling over and everything will just keep getting a whole lot messier. That goes for our Church too.

  12. I often remind people of Hemingway’s famous quote from The Sun Also Rises

    “How did you go bankrupt?”

    “Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.”

    There is wisdom in his writing, much of it gained from personal experience. It’s been said systems also fail in this manner. Slowly, then suddenly. This includes political systems, financial systems and even mechanical systems. Neglect oil changes in your car’s engine and see what happens over thousands of miles. Our spiritual life operates in the same way. We may neglect it and fall away from the faith gradually, like the frog in the proverbial pot of water which is slowly heating up. Then suddenly he finds himself boiling and we find we have lost the Faith.

    It feels like we have now reached the second, more sudden way of failure in almost all things. I’m glad it is Lent. It is a good time to assess our progress and perhaps change our oil. Godspeed and God Bless.

    1. This hit home! Ouch. I trusted the gauge and when my car made funny noises, I attributed it to his dishonor not wanting me to get to mass. But on the way home, my personal ker-flooey, the oil was dry, and my engine ka-put. So, since Christmas, I have been dependent on others. And I live miles from anyone. (Other than the 10 folks who depend on ME!) A whole new way of life. No daily Mass. No sidewalk counseling. No more filling up my prepping holes with garage sales and other bargains. Instead, we are using from my existing stash.

      God has many. many ways of making me humble.

    1. CD, I pray that Father R. is correct! Love your Hanoi Jane idea. I remember so clearly those days. We had more than one friend shot down over there.

      So much to chew on, Charlie! I just keep telling the Lord that I want to do His will, stay in the Divine Will, and not have my own ideas motivate me. But I hope my family can stay safe and be together if possible. Again, it depends on His Will. I feel such a weight now.

    I also appreciate your link to The Brazen Serpent Prayer Rosary. To clarify, this was the work of many CORAC National Prayer Teams Committee members and others who advised and participated in various ways. The talented videographer (a member of the CORAC National Prayer Teams Committee) put it all together, beautifully.

    We-all discerned that people might join together in a structured way to pray about what they are seeing all around them, specifically concerning vaxxx reactions; our group et al have facilitated that.

  22. Thank you Charlie for a most timely post. Hanging in there doing the little I can each day and leaving the rest to God.

    I’ve grown especially fond of the Hallow app this Lenten season and have been surrendering my worries to Our Lord’s care through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother. I ask her every night to cover me and all her faithful children under her mantle as the Lord tirelessly pursues His lost sheep ushering them to join us. 🙏🏻

    Anything is possible when we’re riding the wild rapids, isn’t it? We must remember as well that God gives the prophecies through His chosen ones who say, Yes.” At the same time, God is never subject to the prophecies, for He is the Master of us all and the Master Plan of the Storm. Remember that Through a Glass Darkly piece? Here are some excerpts:
    **Authentic prophecy is always an invitation from God. It is an invitation to remember His goodness in times past, to see His mercies in times present, to come back to Him with our whole heart, and to call others to do the same. It is guidance on how to act in particular times and circumstances to accomplish this. It is assurance that He is there, that He loves us, that He wants us back, and that He will walk with us if we heed Him. It is an invitation first to the one called to prophesy, and then to all who will hear. It is an invitation to come to God and participate with Him in His gathering of His children. The most important part of prophecy is its call for what we should do.

    **It is a great achievement of the devil that he has seduced so many into reducing prophecy to fortune-telling, a sort of mystical mystery theatre in which most act as passive spectators, choosing the character on-stage who best appeals to their interests, beliefs and vanity – then sitting back and enjoying the show. God calls you to act, to act with Him, to act selflessly to rescue His children from despair and disorder. If the emphasis of any mystic is on what will happen rather than what you are called to, it is a diversion, not prophecy. Authentic prophecy is active, requiring you to stretch out your heart and your mind to God and to stretch out your hand in solidarity with your fellows. It is not passive.

    **When you are shown, when you get a glimpse into eternity, it is like that. Trillions of parts all pulsing and whirling, traveling at different speeds and directions, often changing speeds and directions. It is like a three-year-old trying to make sense of the working of a nuclear reactor. At the most elementary level, you try to discern the convergence point of several different elements. It is a game that appeals to your vanity – kind of like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube writ large. Except it is impossible. Things change speeds and direction regularly. After a while, if you are wise, you largely drop that effort and focus on patterns that emerge. While you can’t discern all – or even many – of the details, you can see the larger trends they form.

    **There are several complications even in this. First, some things are symbolic and some are literal – and it can be difficult to recognize the difference. Some things can’t be changed; others are changed dramatically by our response. It is similar to a cruise liner sinking in the open ocean. Once it reaches a certain point in its distress it is certain to sink. It is almost certain that some people will die. How many will die, though, depends on the behavior of those caught in the catastrophe. If everyone is in panic and acting in an “every man for himself” way, many will die. If many are steady and resolute, they can help others do the same and many lives will be saved.

    **The key to everything in these times, after five decades of instruction, is not in the grandiose, but the simple. Acknowledge God, take the next right step, and be a sign of hope to those around you.

In Baptism, a person receives an anointing in which they are “incorporated into Christ who is anointed priest, prophet, and king” (CCC …we all are priests, prophets and kings, the Whole People of God participates in these three offices of Christ and bears the responsibilities for mission and service that flow from them.)
      If we are to fulfill our vocation we must fulfill the obligations put to us for our particular charisms. St Paul puts it this way:
      “Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.”

    Often, I imagine my father fuming over all the mistakes and lunacy these days. He had a masters in International Relations, and 30 years as a military officer. He would be heartbroken to see what has happened to our country.

  44. I was watching some powerful videos tonight of Father James Blount, exorcist and charismatic priest, on youtube tonight. The very last one I saw was this: He has recently seen the antichrist. He is a world leader. He talks about it on a very recent youtube video.(done about 10 days ago) He does not say much about the person except that he has seen him. He says we will know soon enough. He also asks us to say The Unity Prayer and A Flame of Love prayer which can be added to the Hail Mary. He says that these two prayers will blind the satan for us and our family and protect us from a lot of evils. If you search for Unity Prayer.     1. Well, Judith, I remain emphatic that this is NOT the time for the Antichrist to appear. That is not until the end and this is NOT the end. Fr. Blount joins the battallions of Priests and laymen who have been certain they have seen the Antichrist for 2,000 years and know his name. This does NOT change my mind about the appearance of the Antichrist now but it DOES lead me to regard other things Fr. Blount has said as suspect and overheated. One of us is mistaken. I’ll take my chances with the next right step.

Perhaps by ‘antichrist’, he means this is the man leading the opposition against Judeo Christian culture and against the flock. …..I do not think Father Blount has said anything that really supplants the next right step. All prayers offer protection, though never total protection.

        1. I’m sorry, Judith, I got a bit agitated. There is only one Antichrist, the man of perdition, who comes at the end and is the personification of evil. There are, indeed, many antichrists – and always have been…those who oppose Christ and His teachings. When someone says they know who the Antichrist is, that speaks to the man of perdition. I get frustrated that so many continue to treat the disorders in the world as an unfolding terror show and keep posing what they think are spoiler alerts. Even when I was talking about the storm that was coming and is now upon us, my focus was on what we can do to weather it all. I just don’t understand dire pronouncements about fearful things that we can’t do anything about when I am intense that our focus should be on the little we can do. I think these scary pronouncements are a distraction that easily leads us away from our duty and, so, sometimes it boils up in me.

          That said, I know many people who take a lot of consolation from Fr. Blount and he is doing a lot of very good work.

          I get besieged each day by people all telling me who the Antichrist is, where he is at and what his name is…and who the Great Monarch is and that he is meeting with the UN right now or who the next holy pope is going to be and they are all planning our deliverance or our destruction while we sit and wait to see how it plays out. It frustrates me to no end. We are in hard times which will get harder – and God has work for each of us if we will accept it. That is my focus and will remain my focus. We are called to be collaborators with God in the renewal of the faith and the face of the world, not spectators. I am usually more circumspect at drawing attention back to our duty. But sometimes I do boil over a bit. My apologies.

      1. John 2:18-19 indicates that there are /have been many antichrists. I am no theologeion. However, to me an antichrist is a person whose plan is the destruction of the church of Jesus Christ and the Judeo-Christian laws and culture. It seems to me that this is on-going right now….though I know there is one who will appear at the very end times who will be much worse……I think Charlie once referred to the present person as an acolyte of the antichrist.

          1. I read “the very end times” to mean the end of the world, Judith. I know some speak of this period, before Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart triumphs completely, as “the end of times” meaning the end of these times incredibly marked by evil.

    3. I also watch some of Fr. Blount’s sermons and talks. I like Fr. Blount’s joy and his certainty in the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart. I find those things very helpful. While I’m pretty sure no one has everything one hundred percent accurate about where, exactly, we are in salvation history, and while I tend to believe that this is not the definitive end, but the end of an age, I am consoled by Fr. Blount’s zeal for prayer. As to whether he has seen the anitchrist, or someone in the spirit of the antichrist, or whether he is just totally mistaken about all that, for me, that is the less important part of his message. I figure lots of folks have great things to say, but still make mistakes. So, I’m trying to take the good. And I do find myself being more peaceful, more surrendered to God, and more joyful after listening to what he has to say. And I’m also trying to TNRS.

      1. I know many who are heartened by Fr. Blount for the reasons you convey, Joe. However, perhaps the greatest danger in claiming that THE Antichrist is here is the confusion this throws into the already heightened chaos around us. Too many who hear of the Antichrist may well jump to the conclusion that this is the end of the world. It’s a big deal to be confused in this way as it sets up a scenario for the enemy to tempt one to despair when our call is to rise up and be counted among those in God’s Army of those willing to do the little we can wherever we may be. Instead of living the mature Ora et Labora mindset, one could indulge in overwhelming paralysis via Ora et Celare way of thinking. (Desmond can correct my Latin since Father is napping 🙂 )

      3. I actually think that since Father Blount is an exorcist, he is probably very sensitive to the presence of evil. He certainly does not believe that these are the very end times. In any case, I think he was shown a leader who opposes anything that is Judeo-Chrisitan. I can tell you that, after watching some of his videos, I felt more of a zeal toward prayer (as Joe indicated, Father Blount is quite good at this). I also like his sense of humor. Since I have been feeling ill, a bit sad, and lonely, I found his talks helped to raise my spirits. I do not think this can be a bad thing, even is he is not 100 percent correct about everything. When talking about ‘antichrist’, perhaps there is simply a disagreement on definition. After all, Fr. Blount clearly says in his videos that this is definitely the very end times. I think Charlie would say ‘acolyte’ of antichrist……Mabye Father Blount suggested that one simple prayer might solve each of our individual problems, and I certainly do not think that is the case, but I will accept any new ‘weapons’ in this current battle. I also appreciate CORAC, for sure!

        1. I know quite a few people who appreciate Father’s talks and exhortations, Judith. The Scriptures speak of the spirit of the antichrist with which Christians have contended from one generation to another.

  45. If people are interested in the link to the video, it would be easy to find, Judith. I’ve received it from a lot of people. In respect to our focus here (fostering mindsets which will carry us through whatever exactly is yet to come), I’ve removed the link to Fr. Blount’s assertions. His claims could readily become a barrier to entering into the 7th Stage of Renewal about which Charlie has written in this very piece. (~BH)

    1. That is fine, Beckita. However, I can tell you that listening to Father Blount’s videos certainly lifted my spirits. I was meant to find him last night because I was in need of some humor and lightness. …. He is not perfect, but he has a place among God’s wonderful but imperfect messengers.
