On Dangerous Ground

I was involved in an auto accident Sunday that could have been – and possibly should have been – fatal. I came out of it unscathed – and my car came out of it practically unscathed, too.

I was eastbound on I-40, around 10 miles out of Amarillo. I was going 75 mph in the left passing lane, about to go past a semi. An SUV came up on my right and started to merge where I was. I honked and started to veer left. Unfortunately, by the time the driver of the other car realized I was there and pulled back, my wheel had already hit the grass in the median and started to spin out of control. I got the car back on the road, but in my struggle for control, it went to the right into the ditch past the shoulder, continuing onto a farm road and then, into the ditch to the right of that. I was deeply fortunate that there were no vehicles behind us as I spun through four traffic lanes – three eastbound and one westbound. The terrain was fortunate for me, as well. The first ditch had a relatively gentle slope and then a very gentle lip onto the farm road. I tried to get control back on the farm road but the momentum was too strong and I carried into the ditch across it.

The folks who accidentally ran me off the road stopped to see if I was okay, God bless them. It was a young Hispanic family who was taking their grandpa to Tulsa for a scheduled cancer treatment. My car, amazingly, did not even have a new dent in it, though the centrifugal stresses had flattened the front driver’s side tire. I was able to back it out of the ditch. The family put my donut tire on, still very nervous and concerned. They did not seem to want to exchange information so I did not make a report. The car was fully operable and they were very nice, if nervous, people. Some might think that stupid, but I was not about to be the servant who, after his master forgave him so much, seized on a fellow servant who owed much less. One young fellow gushed that I had handled the skid and drift better than any he had ever seen. I don’t remember what I said, but I thought it was undoubtedly my guardian angel who handled it. I gave them each a Brazen Serpent Prayer card before I left.

With the help of a cashier from a Love’s Station, I found a guy, Nathan, who would fix the tire on a Sunday afternoon. But he was 70 miles up the road. When I pulled in, it was a double-wide trailer with a bunch of trucks out front. He had a service truck he used to help people on the road. He said he was just about ready to put a shop up when the price of everything exploded and his plans were killed for the time being. He fixed the tire, found that nothing was wrong except that a lot of dirt and grit had gotten between the tire and the wheel. He checked and fixed several of them. He was very kind. My son-in-law called while I was there and Nathan turned the air on in his service truck for me and went and got me a Pepsi. He worked an hour in the 90+ degree heat to get it all done and my tire remounted. When I asked him how much I owed him, he astonished me by saying $15. I was having none of that and gave him significantly more. I don’t have much personal money, but I always think of the widow who gave Elisha the last that she had when someone does me a signal service. The workman is worthy of his hire – and Nathan was worth far more than $15 after spending an hour of his Sunday afternoon in the hot sun getting me road ready.

I have been thinking about all that happened. Probably in 70% of such cases in identical circumstances there would be significant damages and injuries. I didn’t even have a bruise across my chest from where my seatbelt grabbed me. What are the odds of coming out of it with no injuries to anyone and no serious damage to any vehicle? One in 200, one in 300? Yet there it is. Beyond that, I have had five circumstances the last two years where people who helped me could have significantly gouged me. Never happened. In fact, in three cases I ended up giving people who helped more than they asked. People are kind if you treat them with dignity and don’t scream about what you are expecting from them. Thanks be to God. There is much more there to be contemplated, but I think a very clear message is that God and His people can be counted on – if only you humbly do so without bewailing your misfortune.

Back to Russia and Ukraine. The war goes far rougher for Russia than Vladimir Putin expected – but far better for Russia than the west reports. I have fairly clear vision, but it is rough to see when everything is surrounded with such a thick cover of smog.

The first thing to understand is that this is like a rhinoceros battling a lynx. The cat may scratch the rhino, but it will not win the larger battle. America has sent Volodymyr Zelensky the equivalent of more than a year’s worth of the entire GDP of Ukraine and a lot of deadly weapons. I don’t think it has helped Zelensky – who has developed such a case of hubris that he refuses to enter into negotiations with Russia. This could have been prevented 20 years ago by negotiating for self-determination for Crimea and the Donbass – which identify primarily as Russian. It could have been ended early on by ceding the same. It could be ended now by ceding the same. But the globalists and our western elites want war with Russia – by proxy if possible, openly if not.

There is widespread speculation that Putin is sick or cognitively diminished. That could be, but it is the sort of propaganda that is always spread about enemy leaders. I have seen no hard evidence of it yet. I suspect that he is stunned that even an invasion could not get the west to the bargaining table – and now the west is spoiling for an open fight with nuclear Russia. I don’t know if Putin is a madman who has lost touch with reality, but I know western leaders have long since lost touch with reality. Here’s what is likely to happen going forward:

Russia will accomplish its aims to secure the Donbass and Crimea. Russia’s frustration with America and the west’s deafness to the easy way of doing that may lead it to take Ukraine over altogether. If we do continue to push for expansion of war and fill Zelensky with continued fantasies of his own invulnerability, Russia may set off a nuke in Ukraine in hopes of finally getting the west to see the stakes involved. Then it would assure European countries it will go no further if they stop whipping up war plans against Russia and expanding NATO. If America and the west continue to push, then we could have global war. If it sobers up, things will go much more quietly. But that could be a desperate situation for American elites because if Russia takes all of Ukraine, you can bet it is going to start revealing the secrets those elites have hidden in Ukraine in revenge.

Russia is the indispensable buffer between the world and China’s hegemonic ambitions. The geo-political significance of Ukraine, which is regional, pales before that. China, while nominally supporting Russia, has given little in the way of tangible assistance. That is a blessing. It means Russia can give lip service to, but largely stay out of the fray, when China invades Taiwan later this summer or in the fall. This war has put a wedge between Russia and China – a very subtle wedge, but a wedge, nonetheless. The one nation which could have prevented or negotiated this war away was the United States. Instead, it has busied itself throwing gasoline onto the flaming pile, thinking a larger conflagration would be in its current leadership’s partisan political interests. Boy, is that illusion going to be shattered before the year is out!

Amazingly, for all the incompetence and hubris, the war has progressed in a manner that preserves the potential needed to overcome the massive Chinese threat when it finally fully shows its face. Russia knows it needs a strong and sober America to survive and have a chance of overcoming that threat. America does not know that it needs Russia for that coming project, but it will. The entire American foreign policy establishment has the combined geo-political knowledge and analytical prowess of a dull-witted third grader right now. But events will painfully educate America into casting off the lunatics who now “govern” us and act in self-defense. I will write more about that this weekend.

Most of us will live to see America once again become a major force for good in the world, but only after we have been badly enfeebled by our dalliance with the willful adolescent idiots we now suffer to govern us. A badly weakened America and an equally badly weakened and chastened Russia will wearily make common cause to stop the megalomaniacal ambitions of an incredibly emboldened China. A lot more people will suffer and die than would have to if we had stuck to real justice instead of “social” justice illusions and sound policy instead of toxic ideological flights of fancy. There is real peace at the far end of all this, but another generation of young men is going to be badly decimated because of our entirely preventable hubris. I pray that the horrific trial we are plunging headlong into will be sufficient to convince people for a thousand years that human nature cannot be whatever you want it to be and that peace and prosperity are attained and sustained by reverence for God and good policy choices. I always knew the road to hell was paved with good intentions: I did not know it would be lined with crowds cheering on their own descent into the maelstrom. All those timid people who have tried to protect their political viability by compromising with evil lunatics will be swept away by the very demons they have summoned.

Already the rules have changed, however it may seem to you in this fog of cultural war. Petty, clever gamesmanship in service to your own wishes will get you killed. It is your love of and service to God and your neighbor that will carry you safely through this valley of death we have chosen to enter.

And boy, have they got a line-up of speakers who will knock your socks off! First up will be Dan Cheely, former talk-show host at Relevant Radio and now director of evangeliztion for St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Chicago. Then comes Anthony Esolen, who I personally believe is the most elegantly beautiful Catholic writer in America today. A bold survivor of the “cancel culture” who stood his ground firmly with charity when the shrieking mob objected to having a refined orthodox Catholic voice in residence at “their” college, Esolen is the very definition of refined, courageous and charitable. His recent piece on unborn children moved me to tears. They will wrap up with renowned international champion for life Raymond de Souza.  President of the Sacred Heart Institute in the U.S., de Souza champions life tirelessly as an activist, writer and broadcaster.

As with most of CORAC’s events, there will be no charge to attend. (You gotta buy your own lunch, though). So, if you can make it next Tuesday, June 14, they still have some seats available.   1. Mercy, Charlie. The composer of the Brazen Serpent Prayer has, once again, been saved from a horrible fate. Glory to God! And blessed He is in the good people who have assisted you in your trials. And blessed He is in those who love and pray for you as your make your pilgrimage, driving from place to place and meeting to meeting.

    In these days of import, living the launch into the worst of the worst to come, I continue to be grateful to pray the Brazen Serpent Prayer each morning, renewing my commitment to be ALL IN through and with God and finding that this prayer has taken me into a deeper and more certain dependence on our heavenly Father, the God of Providence.

  3. Charlie, great article. I would like to solve the puzzle. Illegal aliens. The folks who seemed so reluctant to exchange information. But hey, they have rights to drive you off the road, just like American citizens. Your thoughts on Russia and Red China seem on point. Keep them coming.

    1. Thanks Joe. I suppose they could have been illegal aliens, but it could be they were uninsured, or maybe they were just nervous. If they were the former, it took a great amount of courage and compassion to stop and check on my well-being. They made a bad mistake that could have been a deadly one but they DID come and submit themselves to me. Lord knows, I have made stupid mistakes while driving, at times. I believe that, if I had been hurt, they would have gotten help, whatever the consequences to themselves. The young woman was struggling to hold back tears – and then astonished that I was not harmed at all.

      1. Whether illegal, uninsured or just nervous because of that driver’s almost deadly error . . . their moral compass is on the dash and functioning properly.

    Funny thing…when you were super sick with Covid, I ended up getting super sick as well and wanted to light a candle at church for you. Needless to say, I couldn’t get to church so I lit candles 🕯 for you in my home with what I had.

    Last Friday I was lighting candles for my loved ones, and it entered my mind to light one for you too! I did! It’s still lit I’m sure for it’s one of those big ole 7 day 🕯 candles!!!

    Anyhow, I’m sure you weren’t saved from disaster because of the Holy Spirit inspiring me to light one for you, but in the greater theme of things, we are all working together as church militant, praying for each other!!!

    I see Crewdog still lights his virtual candles 🕯 for you too!🥰

          1. Yes, Linda, back since Tuesday evening, and back to work on Thursday.

            Just thinking… this time last week was the first day and we were still walking in quite exhausting heat – but the thunderstorm and torrential rain would hit us in just a couple of hours!! On each of the first two days you don’t reach the bivouac area until about 8 p.m. so the days are long, and the rain didn’t really let up until about 30 mins before we arrived. But at least we were carrying wine distributed among us in plastic bottles, so we had that to look forward to. And hot soup, which the organisers provide (they are very efficient, and it’s a huge logistical undertaking). Hot soup and red wine. Mmmmm…😊 Not a bad way to end a very challenging day!

  6. Perhaps Charlie’s miraculous survival is a sign of how God can always do something new! Though Charlie was swept up in a gravitational tornado and came out unharmed, maybe God’s people will also come out of this massive swirl of the culture war with just a great story to tell.
    Charlie, the aggressive move to the left of the blundering driver was blind but had dire consequences for you and yet, through that maelstrom, you came out shaken but unharmed. He was sorry for the ill he had caused you but wanted to get away without any consequences to himself and left you on your own to proceed on your journey. Yet, thanks to the good heart of another and the grace of God, you are able to hearten us even more as our Good God also wants us to overcome our own fears and just trust.
    I could be way off base but that’s the first thing that came to me after reading this; the meeting between you, the ordinary Child of God, and the godless agressors in this culture war.

      I’ve been pondering what you posted for quite awhile now. I’m in awe that my generation has had a ringside seat all of these years to the tremendous assault of evil. I am forever grateful that I was able to receive the grace to find my way out of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s without too much damage–even tho my sinfulness contributed to the carnage we are experiencing now. Since 2008, I have been in prayerful reparation for my soul and all souls. I have worked in the service of Our Lord and know that it was His love and grace that kept me going. I will continue to pray for the illumination of hearts and minds and for conversion of my family, neighbors and my nation. Yes, I believe my twilight years will be in “monastic prayer and service” for mankind. Even though I look in horror all around me, I am at peace, knowing that Our God will carry His people home soon. Until then, I wait on the Lord.

      God bless you Charlie, so relieved that you and everyone on the interstate were kept safe. Also, many good people came to your aid.

        1. Ha! My son and youngest brother are top marksmen. My son took the prize at the academy even though he had never shot before – but he let the second place winner, who had been shooting all his life, think that my son had, too. No sense rubbing it in. I suspect a lot more things than we know run in the genes. On the other hand, I feel safer riding with my NASCAR brother when he is going 120 mph than I do with another brother when he is going 60. But sometimes a gene does skip over.

    I am trying hard not to envision any future as only God knows what that looks like. Clinging to Him and begging for His constant grace as I surrender to Him is all I can do. So difficult in my littleness…

  12. Charlie, I’m so grateful that you survived your ordeal on I-40. God is Great!! 35 years ago when we first got married my wife and I lived in Lubbock for a year. We had traveled 40 out of Amarillo a few times. Today we live near the same highway, only now in West Tennessee. It can be a real challenge to safely travel on that road and I’m well experienced on I-95 and the NJTP in the Northeast. Seems to me you were meant to come across that family and make contact with them. Let us keep them in our prayers, especially the grandfather and his battle with cancer. I will include them and Nathan in my Rosary tonight. God Bless.

  14. Well Charlie, that sounds like a real miracle to me! Praise you, Jesus, and all the angels and saints! Love your analysis as always!!! I’m so tired of hearing the “stand with Ukraine” crowd all over the media! Are there any truthful, intelligent people out there? Very few, but we know how to search for them, and search we do. Crewdog helps with that, as well as your resources, Charlie.

    I keep praying for the Light of the Holy Spirit to fill every human. Praying also for strength and perseverance as there seems to be one crisis after another in the family. I think I’m too old for this, but with God’s help…………… 😉

  16. Charlue, that sounds terrifying and I am glad you were protocted, and merciful to that family. None of it it short of a miracle. There are good, good people out there, too.

    My heart’s in my throat with the thought of war. My two living boys are a part of that generation. As are their friends, who have spent many hours at my house. And I pray they all have enough of a foundation to help them through whatever that future brings.

    1. Briana, I have three boys who are all draft age. I have to pray the surrender prayer every time I think about the possibility of war. And I pray too for their faith, which took a big hit when churches were closed. 😥 Trusting God big time with this.

        1. I’d rather have DeSantis, but understandably Trump might have better chances. DeSantis is more polite, yet is less negotiating and apparently not looking for a good media coverage. Trump was a good president, however, seemed bit naive and too focused on twitting and giving lots of interviews to the left wing corrupt media. And now he is also checked (compromised?) by the big pharma by giving them immunity (in good faith) in case the vax would turn out a failure, and it did. Trump still praises the vaxxes, but he probably would be finished in politics if he admitted he failed in this regard and his decisions nevertheless contributed to unnecessary deaths… Either way, these two candidates should avoid colliding in the primaries and should make an agreement beforehand.

    Yep, you’re assessment is realistic Charlie, just about anything could play out for Russia, China, & America, as choices & consequences decide future events.

    I’ve read tonnes of information over the years, and information in of itself is no substitute for the consequences of human choices. Our Lady’s warnings use conditional language like “if”, “then”, & ” not” which emphasise choices…

  22. Thankful to God for your miraculous survival on I-40, Charlie. Your story reminds me of a couple of my own similar car escapades; once on the Cross-Bronx Expressway in NY, and another on a small country lane in Eire. God saved me both times, even though both occurred before I came to know Him through His Son, the Lord Jesus. How wonderful is God that He should watch over and bless us so;

      1. A neat article, JoyFulHope. I particularly liked the way the Italian Professor Liberato De Caro explained the technique of “Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering” by using spaghetti as an example. It brought the explanation down to a level that I could half-way understand.

Consequently, should they decide to reduce production on their farms, prices will have nowhere to go but further upwards.

      My wife and I often buy a couple of pre-cooked containers of shredded chicken from Walmart. Originally, I started buying them because they seemed like a good deal for the price; $4:97 each. On my most recent trip to the store, I was stunned to see the price had risen radically for the exact same item – they’re now $12.97 each! At first, I thought that must be a mistake. But after a check on the labelling, I learned that this was indeed the new price.

      Much as we like the product, $12.97 for a pound of cooked chicken was beyond our budget.. I don’t like to think about what might happen next. Where will prices go if the WEF ask our pals, Bill and Melinda, to put the squeeze on?

  27. Hi, Charlie: My daughter and I had a similar wreck some years ago on the way to Florida in TN on I-75. I was passing on the left and someone on my right did not see me and we swerved into the grassy median and ended up facing northbound on the passing lane shoulder. It was quite frightening. When we had the car looked at the mechanic said he didn’t understand why we didn’t topple over, over and over again. There was grass all in our radiator and wheel well. When we looked up at the wreck, we saw one of those huge silver crosses that are erected here and there. God be praised.

    1. Well, if we are sharing such stories, I am tempted to share mine. I had one like 20 years ago in Poland. So there was a narrow road on that 30 mile trip so one lane for the drivers going South and North. And in this entire route there was only one small slope on the sides of which the drivers could not see the oncoming traffic. I was speeding northbound and the other driver whom I did not see was speeding southbound. In the entire story I did not react in any way, kept my course,I had barely time to blink my eyes. What I saw while almost on the top of that slope was a bike rider going South AND an oncoming car now speeding ( so the biker is not hit ) on my lane straight onto me. Until now I do not understand what happened, just saw a speeding car in the mirror behind me. Not enough time to even get scared just got so confused afterwards. As a kid I did watch the Casper cartoons though.

  30. Hi All. I am sharing this in case anyone else goes through this at times and needs some consolation. I have been feel a little down lately, and in some despair/hopelessness. I remembered Charlie mentioned once about Psalm 27 and it always helps me when I read it:

    This sounds as if millions of our boys are going straight into war with China and millions will not make it. This is devastating. All along I thought Trump etc would help us out of this mess. What good are the intelligence drops, hoping that Trump comes back, etc if we lose our families.
