A friend who is a very effective activist said to me the other day that he was worried that we were going to go around kicking every barking dog so much that we miss the central point and come unprepared to the critical moment. I was delighted, for that concern has been at the heart of my approach, as well.

A reader pressed, with real passion, for action right now. Well, the truth is that when I said I decided early on that I would give our religious readers a mulligan for just about everything they would do this spring, I had a lot of reasons for that. Prepare to get a few mixed metaphors ahead – in hopes that one or more of them register in a vivid way for you.

Start off by getting a curtain rod. Balance it on your fingers at either end, so that your left hand is at the far left end of the rod and your right is at the far right end. Then move your right hand slowly left until both your fingers are at the far left end of the rod. No matter how slowly or carefully you try, you will quickly discover it can’t be done. When things get far enough out of equilibrium, the rod will slide over your left finger until a broad equilibrium is reestablished. This is an elementary form of demonstrating the feedback principle or that every action has a reaction. People often envision life as a still photo, but it is not. It is an ever-changing kaleidoscope. We make a LOT of mistakes because we assume that a current trajectory is the permanent trajectory of events, when it NEVER is. How many articles have you seen that start off by saying, “If current trends continue…”? Current trends never continue for very long. The authors of such pieces might as well start by saying, “If something happens that has never happened in the history of the world before, then…”

Human events are dynamic, not static. If you put together the best predictive model you can that takes into account the dynamic rhythms of life and of human behavior, you will rarely be entirely right but you will usually be in the vicinity of accuracy. If you use a static model that limits itself to current trends (as most of the self-acclaimed “smart” set almost always do), you will routinely be wildly wrong. People being people, such benighted researchers almost always wildly exaggerate the impact that our poor species has on events. Right now, many folks panic over the variance in average earth temperatures by as little as two degrees over a century – and are convinced that it is we who are causing it. If a sea rises at the rate of three inches per decade, it portends disaster that we have caused. Everyone knows that eons ago, glaciers receded, continents shifted and such. But it was a mere 30,000 years ago that the land bridge between what is now Alaska and Russia sunk beneath the sea. A mere 15,000 years ago, the Timor Sea in Australia was rising so fast that it moved the coast inland by three miles every year. The great shifts and cataclysms happened before man was on the scene at all and the more recent events I have mentioned occurred when man had about the same global footprint as any other medium-sized animal. We are not the Titans. The earth is not some fragile flower ready to crack if we use too many SUVs. It has all the feedback loops that God designed in nature and has a pulsing rhythm of its very own where it harmonizes with the acts of man and the many animals that make up its eco-system. At best, we are janitors here – not architects.

A lot of bad models predicted that millions of people were going to die from the Wuhan Virus. The models almost all assumed that whatever was the current rate of infection at the time they were set up would be the permanent rate. It was as idiotic as assuming that you will be operating in permanent darkness if you do your calculations at night. It was the modern equivalent of the ancient practice of making sacrifices so that the sun would return and you would not have permanent winter. Idiocy, idiocy and more idiocy – all masquerading as knowledge and in which we play the starring role. New viruses come into the world every few years – usually with an initial high rate of infection which, over many years, recede until they winkle out after immunity has become broad enough – only to be replaced by other batches of new viruses. The course is common and predictable. Within that constant set of changes, some are particularly virulent, some particularly weak. It makes perfect sense to study the effects and characteristics of such things, that we may best determine who is most vulnerable and how best to defend them. But it should be done with the humility that thus it has ever been – and we have survived and thrived anyway.

With the Wuhan Virus, I agreed that it was worthy of extra precaution – but primarily for reasons that much of the establishment and media are trying to bury right now. I was convinced from early on that this virus was bio-engineered by man. If that were the case, it could bear some startling new characteristics and nasty surprises. A couple of weeks of shutdown early on to flatten the curve seemed reasonable, even if a bit of an overreaction. It doesn’t bother me that some people take more (or on occasion less) dramatic actions than I would – so long as they are not wildly unreasonable. A shutdown until a “cure” is found – something that has never been accomplished with a virus in human history? That is not a precaution, it is civilizational suicide. Who needs a giant meteor of death when the idiots who call themselves the smart set are eager to destroy us all for our own good? (Though smallpox was eradicated, it was NOT cured. It was eradicated by creating such a comprehensive herd immunity that it could no longer survive. The “precautions” we are taking now are designed to impede the development of herd immunity…so not only are we trying for a cure that has never been achieved with any virus; we are actively repudiating the one thing that has previously eradicated a virus.) Aren’t we the clever ones!

I have been forlornly astonished that it seems many people are discovering, for the first time, that viruses are primarily transmitted by personal contact and that those who have the most vulnerability because of other factors such as age, health and existing conditions are most vulnerable to any virus – new or old, and that, ultimately,  death is not a preventable condition. Like a lion in pursuit of a herd of antelope, the virus culls the herd of the most vulnerable. This situation has laid bare that there is much more we could do in a targeted way to protect the most vulnerable from these viruses, both new and old – and that we should do everything we reasonably can to do so. We should also do so knowing that if we do our very best, tens of thousands of the most vulnerable are going to die every year from viral complications. It has absolutely astonished me to see that so many advocate that the herd of antelope should be forced into a cave where it must starve many of its healthiest, most vigorous members in hopes that none of the most vulnerable will be ever culled from the herd again. Civilizational suicide.

Beyond this, I know very well that one of the satan’s signature moves is to isolate those he targets for destruction. That he has succeeded in getting much of the whole world to isolate itself sparks a primal dread in me. The devil uses all our worst qualities and our most extreme emotions to herd us into the vulnerable positions he prefers to attack us from. It unnerves me that we have been so willing, even if it turns out it was justified for a time to make ourselves so vulnerable to him.

So why, given all this, am I not screaming at the top of my lungs for it to stop right now and everybody do things my way?

First, the smartest, most honorable, and shrewdest men are sometimes wrong. That includes me. I have three friends I deeply respect who are much more alarmist about this virus than I am. One was decidedly right on an issue on which I was decidedly wrong a few years back – and the hedging of my bets borne of my respect for him spared me some embarrassment. I do not think I am the end-all in these things – and do trust that, under God, time will usually sort them out. That is not to say I dither when action must be taken; rather, that while candidly espousing my views, I don’t usually act until it is absolutely necessary or clear.

Second, having been the actual final word in several major organizations, I know it is a LOT tougher than it looks. I respect those in authority who accept actual responsibility for the actions they take, even when I think they are misguided for a time. Most of those who shout the loudest from the sidelines about acting with “courage,” are the quickest to run like scalded dogs when they actually have to take responsibility for anything controversial. So it is my default setting to give any in authority the benefit of the doubt for as long as I reasonably can.

Third, on the major issues, hectoring or strong-arming someone into conceding to my point of view accomplishes very little. If they are not actually convinced, as soon as they see an opening, they will reassert themselves. It turns out that convincing someone to shut up or to concede to your will is NOT the same thing as convincing them. If you want a permanent victory, you can’t just prevail on a particular topic, you have to change the very mindset that made dangerous error possible. I believe that most people want to be just (while understanding that a substantial segment just wants power). If I strong-arm those people who want to be just but disagree with me, I have not convinced them – and usually drive them further into the opposition camp. But if I calculate my comments to force the opposition to respond with both words and action, we both reveal ourselves. If I am wrong, I will come to see it. If they are honorable and just, I will come to see it. And if I am right, those who are honorable and just among my opponents will come to see it and embrace it. A person who has become amenable to my position because of what they have seen with their own eyes becomes a steadfast ally – all the more steadfast because I made no effort to strong-arm them. A person I have browbeat to accede to my position is no ally at all – but an opponent suppressed for a time who will restlessly look for a way overthrow my transient victory.

This is the method I almost always use for the big issues. You have to have faith that most people will ultimately want to do what is most right and just. If they don’t, then there will be no alternative to serious strife anyway, so what have you got to lose by taking the most positive construction of others motives? In addition, I try to determine and focus on the key central points. Many causes are lost because the advocates are so easily led to chase restlessly after points that are extraneous to the larger resolution. I know. I have defeated opponents by luring them into chasing after shiny objects or confusing their missiles with chaff – and so missing the main point entirely. I am VERY sensitive about not being so distracted, myself.

In Minnesota, the Catholic Bishops decided to open the Mass back up regardless of what the state says. Frankly, I didn’t expect that. They won’t be the last. We have allies we don’t know – and we have allies who, themselves, do not yet know they are our allies. I do trust in the decency, honor and good will of most folks, even those I disagree with. Right now, most all of the strong-arming is being done by the anti-God left. That can win battles – at the cost of driving many of those they strong-arm into my camp. That is why battles won by such means almost always ultimately translate into lost wars. I am disturbed that some who agree with me on principle agree with the left on strong-arm tactics.

I take all of this very seriously. This crisis is receding even now. By the end of June, we will be largely back to normal whatever power-mad governors and mayors command. Hopefully, it will be a normal that takes seriously the need for targeted precautions without isolating the vulnerable or bankrupting the robust. Yet I am convinced we will see a full-scale renewed assault by the anti-God left – and sooner rather than later. It will be the decisive battle between the Church and the anti-Church, the Gospel versus the anti-Gospel. It is for the very future of humanity. It is not sufficient to win the day. We must comport ourselves in a way that will bear fruit that will last. That is my commitment – and why I will not panic. If the only way I can win is by strong-arming those who disagree with me, than I cannot win at all – and neither can you.

      To my first point, I did contact my elec. officials. Other than that, there is not much to be done, but try not to live in total fear for the day of forced vax.

      To the second point, large families are under censor. In all the gov. orders, it’s a lot of “no more than 5 people can be grouped together in any private gathering in homes” I don’t think I’m overreacting here when I say even though it had no teeth–yet–it was a chilling reveal of what The Deplorables want.

      As things become more surreal, there is a huge emphasis on “number” of people that can safely participate in church services. Regardless of the intent, the end result is most certainly not favorable to large families.The stage for hostility is being prepared. There is an unholy competition for access to sacraments, and whereas one or 2 could slip in, not so much a group of eight.

      It’s difficult for me to explain clearly. I hope I’m making sense. Again any wisdom is appreciated.

      A mother with informed consent would not allow her newborn to be injected with a vaccine to prevent STD’s that they are at zero risk of contracting

      In the new and *better normal* every person should have a right to exercise a truly informed consent – Good doctors and nurses would reject their position as demi-god and graciously assume their role as helper as our culture resumes the mothers righteous place as primary care provider, newborn babies would be spared the violence of injected toxins polluting their tiny and fragile bodies. Parents will be afforded true informed consent giving them the time to ask questions and to make healthcare decisions free from coercion free from hurry or from discrimination. Vaccine manufacturers will be subject to the natural laws of capitalism by providing transparency for their products and assuming financial responsibility for the harm, injury and death that they inflict. Conversations about vaccinations will be common and uncontentious as mother’s restore their natural bond to join as a tribe and a village to raising their children together. Hope exists where there once fear. Health exists where there was once illness and children are given a chance to thrive.

      This is the picture of new informed consent, God-willing.

      2. I agree with all that and it makes me sad for the medical tyranny that has run rampant these past few decades, especially.

        I kowtowed and my kids got all the shots except flu, hep A, and guardisil. I did force my ped to do an amended slower, schedule—but I’m not really sure that does anything. Now I have regrets, about refusing more of them, the hep b series, for instance, and slowing down the schedule even more.

        So, anyways, moving forward, I don’t think there is anything we can do where I live if they force us to take the corona vax. They want special session to pass no vax no drivers license, and no other things. My husband is renewing his license now, to try to avoid the mandate for a little while. The Deplorables own my state.

        Truly, what can we do?

          1. My state is hoping to go into “special session” by the end of June to get rid of religious exemption to vaxs. They will implement no vaxs = no drivers license, etc. So, hopefully, A Battle, 😀 Otherwise, we will hitch up the doggos and walk to the Artic, Lol 😉

  4. In my opinion, the restrictions that have been forced upon us are only the beginning. As soon as a vaccine is available, there’s talk of restricting air travel to only those with proven immunity, ie. through prior exposure or vaccination. It’ll be interesting to see if the globalists are able to force that one through. Much may depend upon the result of our November elections.

    Let us remember who it is who truly provides us with our peace, our safety.       2. My wife’s family is from South Philly and she was born at St. Agnes. They all lived around Tree and Wolf Streets near the Burke Playground. In fact Burke is one of the family names. She grew up in South Jersey along with me. Lots of Philly cops and fire fighters in her family. Her paternal grandfather was a captain on the police department.

        I’m working right across the river from the airport and was watching the smoke rise up from the city last night.

  8. I’m sure you all have seen the riots in Minneapolis by now but did any of you see what led to it? Did any of you see that 8 Minuit tape of that dear poor man being killed by that murderous bad cop!!! Oh my gosh!!! Why didn’t they charge in to save his life?!?! I like to think I would have regardless of my own personal outcome!!! I couldn’t just stand there and watch that!!! What would possess a person to kill a person totally subdued and in shackles!!! It’s just horrible and I really cried for George Floyd!!! What are we coming to as a society!!!😫😭😢

Check out Citizen Free Press with many reports and videos, not only of the police station burning down in Minneapolis – along with the inane statement from the mayor – but also news about cities throughout the US erupting in protests turned violent. Seems to be a foreshadowing of much more to come.

    3. Our nurse daughter in Louisville, KY, emailed this morning to pray. The police apparently killed a black woman there and now there’s chaos in Louisville. I told her to be careful where she goes in the city; hope she’s safe at work in the hospital.

      Spiritdaily, Michael B., has written numerous times about the 1990 prophecy, There was a recent addition about the “disruption within a disruption”. Sure sounds like now! That’s his headline today.

      1. You know, Annie, I very much felt like the COVID-19 was a major turning point. Things will never be the same… and that’s a good thing from many perspectives. We’re moving forward into the toughest parts of this Storm and our Stella Maris promised She is our Ark of Refuge. Doesn’t mean we won’t suffer, but, Dear Lord, it is worthy to suffer for something good. Praying for your daughter and all who are in the current hot spots.

          I don’t delve too deeply into such things, but I love the simplicity of this and I figured why not? I suffer from great anxiety and fear after LiamXOXO died. Susan Veil of Veronica blogged about how Jesus said to give it to Him. So I decided I would do this every morning with Our Lady Tears of Joy. I got the holy cards and sleep with Our Lady under my pillow. I also keep her close to my computer and kiss her all day long. I think She is the only one keeping my sane. I’m really scared about the mask thing in church specifically and still have not figured out the path The Lord wants us to walk wrt to this. I wish I could just not be bothered by this and see it as a minor nuisance as so many do. I envy them their peace and innocence. I’m begging Him for wisdom, peace, courage, etc, here, His will be done.

          1. Yes, Littlelight. I have a couple of friends who promote this devotion to Our Lady of the Tear of Joy. The best thing I ever did when recovering from PTSD was to engage in EMDR sessions. Phenomenal changes in the brain occurred. I actually checked in with Fr. John Hampsch – also a psychologist – before going through it because I wanted to be sure this therapy did not violate anything about the Catholic faith. With the brain’s neuroplasticity, with guidance, a person can be set free from all manner of mental afflictions.

      2. Watching that ten minute video, infuriated me! A few minutes in I was expecting them to muscle Mr Floyd unto the cop car and drive away. Watching a man die! Cuffed, no less.

        I read the Minneapolis police are taught that tactic, to kneel on a persons throat. Esch. It further fueled my anger when I read not two officers but four were present, on scene. Infuriating. Mr. Floyd should have been restrained on the ground, picked up and thrown into the back of the car and taken away.

        I read also, Floyd and the cop knew each other… they worked together at a night club. Floyd inside security , Chauvin outside.

          I would like to amend my outrage… a little. Two of those Police Officers are fresh out of the Academy. Spanking brand new. Less than four days, on patrol.

          Policing is a different breed. Brave souls running into harms way, when most criminals flee, (they call on the cops to help them) But the road to a ‘seasoned’ cop, no less called a Veteran Police is a tough trail to ride.

          Character building all the way, working in an environment where no one trusts but gives the benefit of doubt thinking (knowing) the other hearts are good. The training does not stop at the Academy continues throughout the early years usually peaking at three years on Patrol. A seasoned NyPD cop usually has seen most of the job at three years and can grow into maturity. A nyc Transit cop usually gets the tenure at one year, due to working alone, in hostile circumstances.

          These two rookies, in all sense of the word rookie, probably were traumatized and thought they were observing a technique. Not Thinking Floyd would die. I only saw one rookie guarding the scene, while he watched the crowd with his back to Chauvin. In any stressful situation, our fine motor focus goes from fine to gross, in an instant, remains until the stress is relieved. Rookie Tao was clearly frazzled and out of his element, trying his best to protect the scene and not focusing on his Field Training Officer Chauvin, behind him.

          In the video, Tao demonstrates his attention on the crowd and is protecting his ‘partner’ of three or four days.

          His Police Experience in arrests, subject control, crowd control was ZERO, NOTHING, NADA. He had no experience in anything but “books”. He was “In Training”.

          Remember: The COP responding to your call of assistance has no one but his other cops to help him. Who responds to a cops plea for help ?… the morgue.

          My first days as a cop were a nightmare. One day, I was anonymous the next day in uniform, no longer innocent but a participant in the game. Suffice to say, confidence in my self was instilled working alone in Harlem, especially being called a blond, blue eyed white devil. In Harlem, Probably the most used word is “white”. The Whte man did this, the white man did that…The second used word Negro.

      My college economics professor attended Kent State, was there and observed (participated) in all. He stated outside agitators came on campus and disrupted/ caused the escalation of force. He stated the military would line up and march accross campus, driving the students into their dorms. He states it was all fun amd games as those on the line were the same age as the college students. They would party with one another afterwards.

      The routine was the same, the soldiers would line up and march across the field, driving the students into the closest dormitory. The students enter, and run thru the dorm, exit the other side, remeeting the soldiers line and contine onto the next dorm.

      He stated the college students knew the outsiders were not from the college and it was only, after did they realize they had been pawns. Exactly what is occurring in Minnesota.

      Notice, the antifa wearing all black carrying a black umbrella to shield his identity, breaking windows. Notice the pink shirted protestor confronting antifa. The strategy of antifa is choreographed movements with a security perimeter, inner and outer. I believe a person with a molotov cocktail maybe seen in the video.

My mom and dad met at Kent State.  My Dad’s parents lived in Kent.  For anyone familiar with Kent, my grand dad built Oak Knolls golf course in Kent.  I used to visit there every summer as a kid and play golf.  But best were the chocolate shakes and hamburgers my grand mom cooked in the club house.  My dad said she always used quality meat.  Sad is the golf course shut down a few years ago.—- Sent from Doug’s Back Pack

  11. Sadly with Donald Trump’s latest tweet about thugs and shooting soon to start he is showing that he is unable to access his adult self when needed. Instead of his first angry response which we have all felt he could have said something adult like, “Sure folks are angry about what happened to Mr. Floyd and we are addressing that. But at the same time it is not acceptable to harm persons or property when people are angry and the law must be enforced” Please respect law and order”. I fear that this type of angry response, instead of leading to healing and healthy change, will instead lead to more anger and will turn many independent voters and undecideds off. We all certainly need to pray more.

      3. Kind of reminds me what a relative a WW2 vet said once after some rioting. He said “Give me my halftrack and a 50 cal machine gun and I will put a stop to that”. I was feeling the same way at the time but I do believe our public responses need to be more nuanced than that. Strong at times yes, but there are limits. In my opinion he went too far and gave the left more meat here.

Point out that group of the two that supposedly represents the conservative, God-fearing right, and I’ll show you a massively complicit bunch of sinners that often looks an awful lot like the massive bunch of sinners on the left.

        I see little difference in the motivations for rioting and looting vs. the motivations for thoughtlessly throwing verbal bombs from the highest level of government (much more having masses applauding it).

        When this vast movement of events hits its crescendo, I guarantee folks will have a completely different perspective.

          1. When everyone goes to bed around here I sometimes opt for a good love story on the tube. If it’s a Western, that’s a bonus, as was the case with McClintock (ok… I say McClintock is a love story). Truth is I enjoy a wide variety of late night shows, but it’s either all a great love story, or nothing at all.

                I’ll say that I think the underdog was the relationship in a world going cold, and, oh, how much much colder it is in our present times.

                Aside from my admission that I like a good love story, I’ll share that my simple plan and almost entire focus in this time is a heart devoid of fear and on fire. Virtually everything else seems like nothing more than a drain and a distraction. That said, I reckon the story will continue to include many facets (as did McClintock), including some comedy and high jinks.

                2. MP, after pondering your inquiry for a bit, I tend to agree with you for the most part. While ruminating, a few more thoughts of other love stories came to mind.

                  The 1965 movie, “Sound of Music” my mother told my dad was a war movie so he’d take her to the theater to see it. That always makes me smile. Mom was well on her way to being a nun. Both parents were raised in a Catholic orphanage and religious life was strongly encouraged. And, well mom did not become a nun, much like Maria von Trapp, she did not tell a lie. 😉

                  The 1985 movie, “Witness” with John Book played by Harrison Ford and Rachel played by Kelly McGillis, I loved until the end.  To this day, I still do not like watching an open ended movie. This made my mom laugh at me for being disappointed. She appreciated a love story that challenged us to have to use our imagination.

                  Another movie, which I did not anticipate I would like and loved, was the 1995 movie, “Bridges of Madison County” with Clint Eastwood as Robert Kincaid and Meryl Streep as Francesca Johnson. Shocker that I really liked it, even though I did not want to. I’ve never really been a fan of Meryl and I just could not see Clint as the romancing kind of guy. It is one of my favorite. ❤

I’ve watched in amazement since before the election first-hand how POTUS, the First Family, and their trusted staff coordinate efforts socially in an effort to thwart the MSM narrative.   13. Just watched a YouTube video of the area before the George Floyd incident that leads folks to think it to be a hoax.

    It was just taken off you tube.

    On Twitter there is lots of talk about the players in this incident. All very interesting coincidences.

    Lastly, it appears police officers, not EMT come pick up Mr. Floyd and Dont actually feel for a pulse. Just touch his head.

    About the destructive riots now proliferating in the United States: Like Benghazi, which was NOT a spontaneous response to an obscure video, these riots appear to be orchestrated and carried out by skilled insurgents. Among other things, since when does a rag-tag bunch of angry protesters have the firepower and ability to intimidate the police force of a major US city into standing down and allowing the rioters to burn down and loot the police station? (Actually, more than one.)

    Someone’s organizing this. It feels like war.

My dear friend is waiting for God to open doors that she can join in this pilgrimage and, in her heart, she simply wants to walk the land calling upon the many saints in France, the eldest daughter of the Church, reclaiming its lands and inhabitants for Jesus. My friend was raised in the boonies of northern Canada as her parents were missionaries there.

    There was something in her which could be brought out; something she could give, something … I could take. For behind the makeup, behind the pose and that ravishing modern appearance, there was … a soul behind that façade … but also a woman of suffering.

    From the start of filming there was an intensity on the set. Soon, the shoot became a grueling experience for Falconetti. Too grueling, some contend, with the tyrannical director extracting a performance like no other from an all too fragile actress. When it came for her head to be shaved, as the saint’s was just before her burning, Falconetti suffered some sort of breakdown. What was even more telling was that, at that point, the whole film crew suffered an emotional collapse as well. Later, when audiences viewed the film, they were no longer watching a part being played within a drama. Instead, before their eyes, there appeared something truly remarkable — transcendent even.         1. I know. My son and his family live there but the riots are mainly downtown and Denver is huge, the 19th most populous U.S. city. The area in which someone lives determines intensity of risk and I see no activity in Charlie’s neck of the woods. Nevertheless, it’s always good to remember him in prayer. Praying for all our families who are affected.
