Cry the Beloved Country

pillar-of-salt

By Charlie Johnston

One of the things that this Corona Virus business has illuminated, but is rarely commented on, is that there are reasonable precautions we could have and should have been taking all along to defend vulnerable populations from the ravages of ordinary flu seasons. In the aftermath of all of this, I seriously doubt that many people who are sick will think it prudent or brave to go to work or Church anyway. That is the one silver lining I see in all this mess.

In the beginning, experts raised enough serious questions that it was not entirely unreasonable to take extraordinary precautions. If this was going to be the equivalent to the Spanish Flu, it made some sense to take steps to prevent it rather than just react to it after it had taken hold. Even so, never before had we massively quarantined a healthy population instead of just reserving that practice for sick populations. By week three, it was pretty clear that this was NOT the successor to the Spanish Flu. But instead of rifling our approach to protect target populations, we just doubled down on locking everything down. In the process, we revealed some fearsome things about who we have become as a people.

It would have been good if people had thought clearly, from the beginning, about the trade-offs involved in this approach. There are always trade-offs; there is no free lunch. Shutting down the world economy has consequences – and the longer the shut-down, the deeper the consequences.

Imagine two small villages in a remote area of the world. One has very little currency in circulation – but the people there make things, grow things and build things; making up for their lack of cash by trading vigorously with each other. The other has an abundance of cash, but its people do not make anything, grow anything, or build anything. Which do you think is rich and free from want? This is one of the illusions of socialism – spreading cash around as a substitute for the hard goods and production which constitute actual wealth. It is why a Soviet Union, Cuba or Venezuela becomes, almost overnight, an impoverished nightmare. The timeline to go from prosperity to ruin is how long it takes to draw down the accumulated capital that the previously productive society had accrued. Our response to this virus has been to shut down productive work and print more cash. The longer this goes, the more like the second little village we will become.

A couple of things have startled me.  In every previous crisis in the history of Western Civilization, the churches have been regarded as the most essential function in the society and, in fact, in some cases have been the institutions responsible for bringing the crisis to an end. In this case, churches have been regarded as entirely unessential havens of superstitious ninnies. I am not surprised that that is how modern elites treat faith. I am shocked at how easily the whole society has accepted that verdict – even as abortion clinics, liquor stores and pot shops are branded essential businesses which must be allowed to continue offering their services unimpeded.

I expected that some local officials, getting their first taste of authoritarian power, would become as enthused about and hooked on it as a crack addict. I did NOT expect so many police officers to be such willing accomplices to enforcing arbitrary and senseless exercises of raw power. I always thought they would be on the side of normal people. I think most of them are – and some police organizations have publicly vowed that they will NOT enforce un-Constitutional orders that have no rational basis. But way too many have eagerly agreed to cultivate snitches and arrest people for playing ball on a deserted playground, surfing alone on an empty beach and other such nonsense. If police organizations which do respect Constitutional rights don’t start giving serious blowback to those who don’t, the police will dilute the support of those who have been their strongest allies. And if any think that the left is ever going to be supportive of police in a genuine law and order context, boy, are they in for a surprise.

As I said, I knew that the various restrictions would energize the exuberant aspirations of petty tyrants across the land, but I had no idea it would be so quick, so comprehensive, and that so many people would accept it with such docility. We are, as Dennis Prager says, in a dress rehearsal for a police state. Even as the impact of the virus, itself, is being proven to be minimal, many local governments’ response gets more draconian.

Before this virus took off, many systems across the globe were over-stressed. We have added an unprecedented amount of new stress to the mix. There will be no getting back to normal. We have dramatically destabilized already unstable economic, political, cultural and religious systems across the globe.

It strikes me as altogether consistent with the Divine sense of humor that He chose to give us a choice once more – a serious but responsible approach to a potential crisis or naked, blanket panic. We were faced with a choice of freedom or safety. We could have had both with a serious response that respected liberty and did not impute authoritarian power to government officials. Instead, we chose panic and general lockdown. And so, as to freedom and safety, we will have neither. At least not without a fight.

Therein lies the irony. By mismanaging this crisis and refusing to refine our course when we saw the evidence of our mismanagement, we have laid the seeds for a much greater conflagration that we will not be able to manage. The churches will not deliver us from this particular crisis – but they will become our sole, best hope for emerging from the conflagration whose seeds we have sown.

I think we will emerge from this crisis and probably spend the summer thinking we have dodged a bullet, that we have gotten things back under control. But the demons we have unleashed will steadily eat away at the already damaged pillars that hold society up. And then we will have to make our stand, for God and for man, for liberty and for responsibility, for faith and for reason. There are only three major roles to take if that crisis comes – oppressor, soldier, or victim. We are called to be God’s hands and feet on earth, His soldiers.

In my mind, I see two opposing and errant poles of thought. One thinks we are sufficient to ourselves, and so relies in its own prowess to solve all problems, leaving no room for God. The other, in a caricature of piety, insists that if we pray enough, God will take care of everything, never demanding that we engage in the prayer of doing, leaving no room for us. At her trial, St. Joan of Arc was asked why, if God wanted France to be saved, He didn’t just save it instead of having her raise an army. She replied that, “the army fought the battles and God gave the victory.” There is a reason why I regard St. Joan as one of my most important patrons. The way to avoid either of these poles is to regularly take on things too big for you, things that require God to have any hope of success while vigorously doing everything in your power to accomplish all that is not reserved to God. If you fail, that is not what God had in mind or, it was, but not in the way you expected. Then get back to work on your next project.

We have entered a great forge. May we cooperate with God so that what He brings out of the forge is better and more noble than what went in.

    1. Hmm. I guess people will have to look for the document themselves. It’s not hard to find. The key phrases to search are:

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

GOVERNMENT’S MOTION TO DISMISS THE CRIMINAL INFORMATION AGAINST THE DEFENDANT MICHAEL T. FLYNN

    2. Sister Bear, I’ll leave the scholarly analysis to the legal beagles who’ve actually had a paying gig in the past 25 years (James Ignatius McCauley, JTBrannigan, Patricia, I’d love to hear your thoughts). All I have to say is: It’s about dang time. It’s been clear forever that this was unjust.

  1. I don’t usually print long pieces but this is is a gem. I don’t know how much weight this will have. Even if it simply heartens us to know we’re not alone in our concerns and that we are in solidarity of prayer, it’s good.

APPEAL FOR THE CHURCH AND THE WORLD
to Catholics and all people of good will
“Veritas liberabit vos.” (“The truth will set you free.”)
    John 8:32

In this time of great crisis, we Pastors of the Catholic Church, by virtue of our mandate, consider it our sacred duty to make an Appeal to our Brothers in the Episcopate, to the Clergy, to Religious, to the holy People of God and to all men and women of good will. This Appeal has also been undersigned by intellectuals, doctors, lawyers, journalists and professionals who agree with its content, and may be undersigned by those who wish to make it their own.

The facts have shown that, under the pretext of the Covid-19 epidemic, the inalienable rights of citizens have in many cases been violated and their fundamental freedoms, including the exercise of freedom of worship, expression and movement, have been disproportionately and unjustifiably restricted. Public health must not, and cannot, become an alibi for infringing on the rights of millions of people around the world, let alone for depriving the civil authority of its duty to act wisely for the common good. This is particularly true as growing doubts emerge from several quarters about the actual contagiousness, danger and resistance of the virus. Many authoritative voices in the world of science and medicine confirm that the media’s alarmism about Covid-19 appears to be absolutely unjustified.

We have reason to believe, on the basis of official data on the incidence of the epidemic as related to the number of deaths, that there are powers interested in creating panic among the world’s population with the sole aim of permanently imposing unacceptable forms of restriction on freedoms, of controlling people and of tracking their movements. The imposition of these illiberal measures is a disturbing prelude to the realization of a world government beyond all control.

We also believe that in some situations the containment measures that were adopted, including the closure of shops and businesses, have precipitated a crisis that has brought down entire sectors of the economy. This encourages interference by foreign powers and has serious social and political repercussions. Those with governmental responsibility must stop these forms of social engineering, by taking measures to protect their citizens whom they represent, and in whose interests they have a serious obligation to act. Likewise, let them help the family, the cell of society, by not unreasonably penalizing the weak and elderly, forcing them into a painful separation from their loved ones. The criminalization of personal and social relationships must likewise be judged as an unacceptable part of the plan of those who advocate isolating individuals in order to better manipulate and control them.

We ask the scientific community to be vigilant, so that cures for Covid-19 are offered in honesty for the common good. Every effort must be made to ensure that shady business interests do not influence the choices made by government leaders and international bodies. It is unreasonable to penalize those remedies that have proved to be effective, and are often inexpensive, just because one wishes to give priority to treatments or vaccines that are not as good, but which guarantee pharmaceutical companies far greater profits, and exacerbate public health expenditures. Let us also remember, as Pastors, that for Catholics it is morally unacceptable to develop or use vaccines derived from material from aborted fetuses.

We also ask government leaders to ensure that forms of control over people, whether through tracking systems or any other form of location-finding, are rigorously avoided. The fight against Covid-19, however serious, must not be the pretext for supporting the hidden intentions of supranational bodies that have very strong commercial and political interests in this plan. In particular, citizens must be given the opportunity to refuse these restrictions on personal freedom, without any penalty whatsoever being imposed on those who do not wish to use vaccines, contact tracking or any other similar tool. Let us also consider the blatant contradiction of those who pursue policies of drastic population control and at the same time present themselves as the savior of humanity, without any political or social legitimacy. Finally, the political responsibility of those who represent the people can in no way be left to “experts” who can indeed claim a kind of immunity from prosecution, which is disturbing to say the least.

We strongly urge those in the media to commit themselves to providing accurate information and not penalizing dissent by resorting to forms of censorship, as is happening widely on social media, in the press and on television. Providing accurate information requires that room be given to voices that are not aligned with a single way of thinking. This allows citizens to consciously assess the facts, without being heavily influenced by partisan interventions. A democratic and honest debate is the best antidote to the risk of imposing subtle forms of dictatorship, presumably worse than those our society has seen rise and fall in the recent past.

Finally, as Pastors responsible for the flock of Christ, let us remember that the Church firmly asserts her autonomy to govern, worship, and teach. This autonomy and freedom are an innate right that Our Lord Jesus Christ has given her for the pursuit of her proper ends. For this reason, as Pastors we firmly assert the right to decide autonomously on the celebration of Mass and the Sacraments, just as we claim absolute autonomy in matters falling within our immediate jurisdiction, such as liturgical norms and ways of administering Communion and the Sacraments. The State has no right to interfere, for any reason whatsoever, in the sovereignty of the Church. Ecclesiastical authorities have never refused to collaborate with the State, but such collaboration does not authorize civil authorities to impose any sort of ban or restriction on public worship or the exercise of priestly ministry. The rights of God and of the faithful are the supreme law of the Church, which she neither intends to, nor can, abdicate. We ask that restrictions on the celebration of public ceremonies be removed.

We should like to invite all people of good will not to shirk their duty to cooperate for the common good, each according to his or her own state and possibilities and in a spirit of fraternal charity. The Church desires such cooperation, but this cannot disregard either a respect for natural law or a guarantee of individual freedoms. The civil duties to which citizens are bound imply the State’s recognition of their rights.

We are all called to assess the current situation in a way consistent with the teaching of the Gospel. This means taking a stand: either with Christ or against Christ. Let us not be intimidated or frightened by those who would have us believe that we are a minority: Good is much more widespread and powerful than the world would have us believe. We are fighting against an invisible enemy that seeks to divide citizens, to separate children from their parents, grandchildren from their grandparents, the faithful from their pastors, students from teachers, and customers from vendors. Let us not allow centuries of Christian civilization to be erased under the pretext of a virus, and an odious technological tyranny to be established, in which nameless and faceless people can decide the fate of the world by confining us to a virtual reality. If this is the plan to which the powers of this earth intend to make us yield, know that Jesus Christ, King and Lord of History, has promised that “the gates of Hell shall not prevail” (Mt 16:18).

Let us entrust government leaders and all those who rule over the fate of nations to Almighty God, that He may enlighten and guide them in this time of great crisis. May they remember that, just as the Lord will judge us Pastors for the flock which he has entrusted to us, so will He also judge government leaders for the peoples whom they have the duty to defend and govern.

With faith, let us beseech the Lord to protect the Church and the world. May the Blessed Virgin, Help of Christians, crush the head of the ancient Serpent and defeat the plans of the children of darkness.

    1. This is quite a statement, connecting many strands of information. I concur.

I notice that most signers are not from the United States, although the USA is represented in most categories. This is a worldwide issue.

        1. Charlie, they (the people at Texas Right to Life) are the kindest and most thoughtful organization I’ve ever been in touch with. They actually call now and then just to check in and ask if I have any prayer requests. Truely genuine.

    3. Oh Beckita– this is wonderful and so encouraging! I was also delighted to see on the news a story about a salon owner who opened her business back up in spite of an “executive” order. She was put in jail but subsequently released by the governor, who also changed the order forcing business closures. Yay! This is what we need. Resist the trampling of the Constitution!

      Will rise together
      Will rise forever
      And God will reign

    6. Maybe this is one way unity will come about. Our voice will be a lot louder if other denominations join these types of statements. Also it would be a natural dividing line between orthodox and liberal Christians. I’m anticipating only traditional churches will take a stand. The people of the Kingdom.

    7. Cardinal Sarah had originally signed but told Archbishop Viganó to remove his signature. Unfortunately, Abp Viganó didn’t see it before it was published, so remove Cdl. Sarah from the signatories. I was just discussing with my wife. We are dismayed that so few prelates could be bothered to defend us. Lucifer must be laughing his horns off.

    1. Wonderful news! We all should ask our church leaders in our own states. Liberty Counsel is awesome. They did great work exposing what was in the Obamacare legislation.

Also wonderful Sr. Bear’s post about Flynn.

  2. Ladies – here’s a thought. If the dioceses request or require a mask to attend mass, maybe begin veiling? I’ll readily admit that vanity is a motivating factor (may God forgive me), but the effect of the ugly masks could be somewhat muted with an attractive draping of a lace veil. Men, sorry.

    1. I like it, goldensun. My parish has given us less than 24 hour notice that they will hear confessions this afternoon and everyone must *obey* the secular guidelines, including masking. I have so far refused to patronize any facility requiring masks. Now this from my local church, followed by, this is remark, “Please note, for those that made an Act of Perfect Contrition during Lent or Divine Mercy, this is the time to complete that in receiving the absolution that is given at the Sacrament of Reconciliation.” followed by a list of ransom demands, imho:

      “The Sacrament of Penance

Saint Mary Immaculate is open for the Sacrament of Penance on these dates and times:

      • Friday, May 8, 3:00pm until all are heard
      • Saturday, May 9, 3:00pm until all are heard

Please note that we are expecting a large number of people, so if you experience that, please come back for one of our later times.

When you come, your cooperation with the following is necessary and appreciated:

      1. IF YOU ARE SICK (WITH ANYTHING), DO NOT COME TO CHURCH. We understand you want the sacraments, but staying home when you are sick is an act of charity.
      a. If you have a fever, stay home.
      b. If you have traveled in the last 14 days, stay home.
      c. If you have a cough, or any shortness of breath, stay home.

      2. Before you come, please wash your hands thoroughly. You will be asked to use hand sanitizer when you enter the building.

      3. You must wear a covering over your mouth and nose (a mask or bandana) when you are on the church campus (inside or outside of the building). This is not optional; those without a face covering will not be admitted to the building. If you need a face covering, please let us know and we will try to get one for you.

      4. Confessions will take place in the Commons. Please line up outside the building. There are marks on the sidewalk every six feet; please use those to maintain social distance. No one will be permitted to wait inside the building.

      5. If you have issues walking or standing in line, please let one of our staff know and we will address your needs if at all possible.

      6. Please understand there may be staff in the parking lot directing traffic. Please follow their instructions for safe arrival and departure. Also be extra careful leaving the parking lot as we anticipate many persons arriving and departing throughout each session.

      7. Confessions will be done behind a screen. Face-to-face confessions will not be available at this time.

      8. After you have made your confession, please leave the Commons so that we can admit the next person. Please do not linger on the parish grounds. Remember that we still need to maintain social distance so that all may remain well. This is not yet the time for a social gathering. We are praying for that opportunity soon.

      9. We are expecting many penitents, so in consideration of others, we cannot offer spiritual direction or counseling during these times. Please make a good examination of conscience before you arrive and plan to be as expedient as is possible so that others may also be heard. We want to be able to provide the Sacrament of Penance for as many as possible, so we appreciate your cooperation.

      10. You are asked to say your Act of Contrition either before or after, and not during your confession. Resources to say the Act of Contrition will be available in the Commons.

      11. If you are able to support the parish during this time, there will be a box in the Commons for you to make your contribution. You are also able to drop contributions in the drop box outside the Commons at any time, or mail them in, or contribute online through our website. THANK YOU for your support during this difficult time.

THANK YOU for your cooperation. We know it’s difficult having to adhere to all of these guidelines, but it’s more difficult to go without the sacraments, as you have no doubt experienced. Let’s work together so that we can have everyone experience the remedies of Holy Mother Church to the extent that we are able, while still helping everyone to remain well. Please know of our continued prayers for everyone at this time.”

We are led to trust and be not afraid, and this leaves me perplexed. Discerning and welcoming any thoughts/insights. Heavy sigh.

      1. My initial thought after reading is to deliver a dump truck of manure to the Pastor’s driveway, but calling him to make an appointment for a personal confession is better.

connect two telephones together and run the telephone line from one room into another…
        Or

        1. Well there you go! 😉

One of my current next right steps is to go to *the source* for first hand communications, whenever possible, since most us have a lot more free time on our hands. It also seems like the better thing to do rather than speculate and remain in the dark. I just called and verified with church staff that personal confessions are not an option at this time.

I am checking in area for other options this weekend that may not be so hard-lined. ❤

      2. This is the kind of insanity that is bred from the Lockdown mentality that breeds fear. It is insatiable and knows no limits. That is why it must be refuted in it’s entirety. The appetite for “Unlimited Power” knows no boundaries.

It truly is Sweden model or bust.

Is there another alternative that gives you more peace? Maybe consider write a polite but firm letter stating your (valid) objections to your local church and greater diocese? Consider withdrawing financial support,?etc.

        1. I was checking to see if other parishes were offering confession and while not finding what I was looking for, I did learn that Bishop Conlon resigned four days ago. I decided to go to the heart of the matter and phoned the Joliet Diocese. Inadvertently, I called the Joliet Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus, which was the # on the website I had open on my laptop screen.

A kind gentleman answered and when I asked if he was aware of other churches offering confession this weekend. He mentioned my parish, St. Mary Immaculate Parish, (SMIP). I explained my apprehensions and disappointments. In my venting, I learned that I was speaking to a priest, Father Ryan, at the cathedral and not to a staffer at the diocese. It turns out Father Ryan was a priest for a short time at SMIP. I remember him fondly.

Father explained that Bishop Pates, who has been assigned to our diocese in Bishop Conlon’s absence, is in his late-eighties. The concern that SMIP is accommodating for the diocese is the high possibility of the more vulnerable elderly arriving in large numbers. Just then my heart tangibly lightened up as I recalled that *this* is not just about me. We tend to make things personal and miss a bigger picture when the adrenaline is flowing. Father also shared that Bishop Pates, who resides with him at the cathedral, is easy going and welcomes input. I shared that having a central place to communicate with each other online within the diocese and be more transparent would be helpful. He will pass along my thoughts and concerns.

In closing, Father Ryan shared that science is not is thing and to err to caution is where we are still. He wishes he could trade places with us. He and his fellow priests are fasting and offering up communions and masses and share our desires to reopen the churches. I added that despite all that we still have Governor Pritzker to attend to. Father suggested that he is an enigma unto himself. I assured him of my daily prayers for him, the clergy/religious and for the church too, to which he was most grateful for. ❤

          1. Alrighty then. I lowered my guard and I accepted the conditions and reasoning behind them. So I get spiffied up in a hurry while thinking of how I will condense my confession into the number of the Commandment(s) broken and the number of time since my last confession for the short and sweet, here’s your hat, what’s your hurry version of reconciling and leave 30 minutes early for a prime spot in line.

I arrive to see only a few vehicles and about half a dozen employees donned in facial gear to let incoming drivers know that at 2:15pm today they were instructed to cancel 3:00pm confessions and they simply are not ready.

What a day! I beckon back to the days when I started listening to Rush Limbaugh. During the Clinton year’s he referred to days of his administration as, “America held hostage, day # _____” in a countdown. I feel as if we are now Earth held hostage, day # ______. The good news is two-fold, we survived the Clinton years, and the victory’s already been won.

I feel like the little engine that could in these days. Instead of repeating, “I think I can”, “I think I can”, I repeat in my head, the next right step, the next right step, and life goes on! Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Easter weekend. ❤

            1. So to add to the confusion. We all agree there is a definite need to protect the vulnerable. There is much disagreement on how to do that. Reading pandemic again (the video), it is heartbreaking because a lot of what we are being commanded to do IS just bad medicine.

And yet the Fear makes it impossible for the light to shine through to more logical solutions (Sweden)

I bet there could be even more logical solutions, if the Totalitarian everything-must-be-destroyed brainwashing was stopped.

There HAS to be another way. We just haven’t been allowed to dissent/find it.

              1. This quote is from Dr. Mikovit’s book: pg 38.”Plague of Corruption: Restoring Faith in the Promise of Science . Just the name of her book gives me goosebumps.

Nobody is going to see this buried here, but the quote was just too delicious and mirrors my thoughts above perfectly. I’m sure her words mirror other’s thoughts, too. Hopefully, this is not an echo chamber, but rather the beginning of an authentic renewal:
                ================Quote
But in this current dark age of science, both the revolutionary and the
conservative are exiled. The revolutionary is shouted down for their
new ideas, and when the conservative asks for the evidence to
support an existing policy, they’re told the issue has already been
settled. Stop with the questions! In place of the revolutionaries and
conservatives in science, we now have the liars, the mercenaries,
                and the cowards.

While they ask each person to maintain a 6 foot distance and provide hand sanitizer they do not have long list of rules or require face masks. In addition our pastor Father Parker provides the best Spiritual instruction and direction of any priest I have ever confessed to. He is a gem.

        (1) Romans 8:28–“All things work together for the good of them who love and serve the Lord, and who are called according to His purpose”;

        (2) Psalm 27:14–“Wait for the Lord; be strong, take heart, and wait for the Lord”; and

        (3) CrewDog–“God bless the Republic and all here” and “Keep your powder dry.”

(I guess that’s four things, but whatever.) 🙂

        2. Oh, I never lack hope, even if it’s nothing more than a fool’s hope sometimes, and I am a big fan of all the Psalms, particularly 27:14. I say “all the Psalms,” including this one: “Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.” 74:4. And this one: “Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.” Psalms 7-6. Balanced out nicely with this one: “Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.” Psalms 27:11.

Aside from being a great study in balance, David is also a great study in struggle. One of the keys to his success, tone of particular Psalms notwithstanding, is that he overcame with honesty and integrity, even when he fell and got back up. Maybe especially, there.

Seems to me that “Rule of Law” is laid up in the ICU with a viral disease, attended to by too many who could aptly be named “Abuse of Power.”

Meanwhile the average American wears a mask and social distances. ‘Cept for that mom, for one, who opened up her salon and got thrown in jail by some bitter judge. Probably a good study in struggle there too, if one could drill down into the details of her life.

          Go, Mom!

“Dear young people, the happiness you are seeking, the happiness you have a right to enjoy has a name and a face: it is Jesus of Nazareth, hidden in the Eucharist. Only he gives the fullness of life to humanity!” – Pope Benedict XVI

“Hear Mass daily; it will prosper the whole day. All your duties will be performed the better for it, and your soul will be stronger to bear its daily cross. The Mass is the most holy act of religion; you can do nothing that can give greater glory to God or be more profitable for your soul than to hear Mass both frequently and devoutly. It is the favorite devotion of the saints.” – St. Peter Julian Eymard

“Everyday, Jesus humbles himself just as He did when He came from His heavenly throne into the Virgin’s womb; everyday He comes to us and lets us see Him in abjection, when He descends from the bosom of the Father into the hands of the priest at the altar.” – St. Francis of Assisi

“The Blessed Eucharist is the perfect Sacrament of the Lord’s Passion, since It contains Christ Himself and his Passion.” – St. Thomas Aquinas

“Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to heaven.” – Pope Pius X

  7. A book is tickling at the back of my mind. I think it was a novel by Morris West. Part of the plot involved major world leaders at a summit. Someone wanted all of them to agree to something so they cut off all outside contact and fed fake TV news to all of them at the summit. Based on the “news” they received, all agreed at the summit but then afterwards found out they’d been horse-swaggled. I was horrified at the time I read it 40 years ago, and thought it scare fantasy. It is sort of reality now. Anyone remember the title? I’d like to read it again.

    1. This is in response to the GP headline, “10 Churches, 20 Pastors Sue Oregon Governor . . . .” I have not been following that situation. What I can report is that, yesterday, our bishop (whose diocese covers all of Oregon east of the Cascades) announced yesterday that public Masses will resume this coming Monday, following prudent safety guidelines devised by the diocese. (I haven’t looked to see what the Archdiocese of Portland is doing.) This is being done not in defiance of but in cooperation with GovKate. Our bishop wrote a letter to county commissioners in late April proposing this reasonable approach, which is consistent with businesses being able to open up following prudent guidelines. I appreciate that we aren’t suing our governor over this!

And regarding our diocese, it turns out that we might not open on June 1 after all: apparently that date was given as “the earliest” that we might open. God bless our bishops, but the Catholics here are getting awfully weary of the bishops’ kowtowing to a power-tripping tyrant who keeps moving the goalposts without any basis in law or science.

You raise a good point: I should call ahead to the Ohio parish to see if we’ll even be allowed into the church on Pentecost. It would be a bummer to drive all the way there, only to find out that they’ve reached their allowed capacity.

  15. Debunking/Truth campaign like this against Plandemic vid is now all over the inter-webz:
    https://www.fox61.com/article/news/verify/verify-the-plandemic-documentary-is-full-of-misinformation/507-95caed4e-7a95-4452-ba7f-98cd0442c9e9

There is however one glaring misrepresentation in the Debunk narrative that I have noticed. I’d like to point it out here.

    The Debunk asserts:
    ======================================Quote
This is false. The flu vaccine does not increase the chances of getting COVID-19 by 36%.

Mikovits’ claim misrepresents the findings of a study into whether the flu vaccine could increase the chances of getting other viruses.

The study was done by the Department of Defense in 2017 — before COVID-19 broke out.

Soldiers who’d received the flu vaccine were studied to see if they had a higher chance of infection from other viruses.

The study concluded that there was “little to no evidence supporting the association of virus interference and influenza vaccination.”

It also adds that “those receiving the influenza vaccine were more likely to have no pathogen detected and reduced risk of influenza when compared to unvaccinated individuals.”

So the study never looked for COVID-19, and concluded that there was no evidence the influenza virus increased the odds of getting other viruses.
    ==========================================End Quote

1.The study “never looked at COVID19” because Covid 19 did NOT exist at the time of the study

    2. Debunk states: “The study concluded that there was “little to no evidence supporting the association of virus interference and influenza vaccination.””
This conclusion was taken out of context. The study did indeed find SIGNIFICANT virus interference with the coronavirus strains that were around at the time of the study (see below)

Here is the research study which Dr. Mikovits says proves vax with flu vax makes one 36% more likely to get a coronavirus (not other flu viruses, just coronaviruses and metapneumovirus). I don’t understand data enough to vet her 36%

Therefore, I just want ALL to see that the debunk narrative itself is not being entirely intellectually honest. What else are they lying about?

Alright, Science Peeps who are on ASOH, Time to set the record straight on this one point, at least.

    ===============================================Study link and Quote
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31607599

Vaccine derived virus interference was significantly associated with coronavirus and human metapneumovirus; however, significant protection with vaccination was associated not only with most influenza viruses, but also parainfluenza, RSV, and non-influenza virus coinfections.

    1. Little light,
      A virus is a plant.
      Bacteria is a plant.
      Penicillin is a plant.
All plants have chemicals called phototoxins.
Each plants phototoxin is toxic to other plants, this is why penicillin (a mold) kills most bacteria (including beneficial ones).
A virus or bacterium, when in a majority state, will kill or inhibit competing virus and bacterium. Our bodies have many active bacterium and virus that live in us in a symbiotic way. An antiviral vaccine destroys the relationship between our immune system and the more common forms of virus we sustain and encounter EVERY DAY naturally (there are several HUNDRED forms in nature). This reduces our balanced ecosystem and allows other virus entry into our bodies.
An example of this is if you till under a field of grass, many different types of weeds can grow in the disturbed earth. The grass produces a phototoxin that inhibits other plants from growing. If you kill the grass, the area is open to invasion. The same goes for our immune system.
Not unlike taking a vaccine, if you spray the weeds growing in the grass with Roundup, it kills both the grass and the weeds but then leaves the soul barren and open to any form of invasion. The Roundup has a temporary effect on killing weeds but a long term effect of leaving the soil reduced of protection from other weeds by killing the grass too. This is why vaccines can increase our chances to further infections.

It is said that many outlets had stories ready to go debunking the video and the doctor M. As I’ve said, look at the divide between dumbed down liberals who believe everything from the fake news, and those who look for real information and resources and analyze it all.

      1. Yes! We have to ask ourselves, why they are going to such lengths to debunk this? First silencing and taking off media didn’t work. Then, the debunk campaign. If what Dr. M has to say is so stupid, let them go on msm and disgrace themselves. That’s the argument Thomas Paine podcast makes.

Makes sense to me. I was asking myself same ? before reading that.

The book sold all copies, only available on kindle copy or the copy Sr Bear posted. Everyone needs to read it. Everyone.

  18. Haven’t been on here for a while. Personally, I’m light years away from God’s grace, and very deserving of good stomping followed be death, but I haven’t been able to change. Maybe I’m not qualified to talk about spiritual things anymore. When the last inauguration finished, I was lost. I felt like God cheated me. How could everything CJ talked about come true, but then end up being wrong when none of those things escalated to what he said would happen? It bugged me for years. Made me feel like prophecy would forever be useless to me after that. But I came back to check with all of this because I started to think that this new election might not happen and the economy looks like its gonna die. I don’t really know what to do in my condition, but I do think that you, Charlie Johnston, are right about everything and that your message makes sense. Just wish I hadn’t jumped down a rabbit hole. Im insanely curious about Dr. Judy Mikovits. Wish I new if she was telling the truth. But she is up against the global machine, and has no one to help her verify her studies so the fact checkers debunking means nothing to me. I suppose that sort of thing doesn’t matter right now??? Just don’t know if I can rest giving up on my search for the truth on Fauci, WHO and the CDC because something is definitely wrong and it eats away at me. Isn’t it our responsibility to seek the truth for our nations sake? I’d feel a bit unpatriotic giving up on that.

    1. Welcome back, Daniel. As you read the comments on this page, you’ll see there are lots of commenters who agree with your suspicions concerning Fauci, WHO and the CDC. Take a look at this article at the Citizen Free Press – and many other sources – today where there’s plenty a report on why not to trust them. I’m so grateful President Trump has shelved the latest document with recommendations from the CDC.

As for Charlie’s thoughts, from 2016, concerning the lack of a peaceful transfer of power, we can look all around us and read the headlines here to see evidence for why there has not been true peace since President Trump won the last election. Victor Davis Hanson – and additional current writers – have made the solid case for the attempt at a soft coup happening throughout Trump’s presidency *and* how this soft coup was well planned with hidden crimes executed, beginning when those responsible for them realized Hillary had lost the election. And while we don’t spend time going back to reinterpret things, the way this one has come about is a perfect example of why it’s important to hold all prophecy ever so loosely in our hands… ready to release it all to God and His surprising ways. One of my favored Charlie lines: We have a LOT of wood to chop.

    3. Welcome back, Daniel. Just this February, I was thinking about something from the old TNRS site: that the US economy would be exceptionally strong, and then, suddenly ~ NOT. In February of 2020, I wondered how that would all play out, if at all. Well . . . .

About Dr. Judy Mikovits: I just finished reading the first part of her book, “Plague of Corruption: Restoring Faith in the Promise of Science,” co-authored with Kent Hekenlively, JD. The Forward by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also gives food for thought. The Introduction, by Dr. Judy, is an opportunity to hear her speak for herself in the midst of various media reports.

      1. Good memory, Sr. Bear. When I bumped into this photo over at Citizen Free Press this evening, my brain was jogged with that idea that Obama would leave the scene in shame. (Not reveling in his demise, I’m actually sick of and angry with all of his deception and outright crimes but praying for his conversion.) Anyway, here’s the photo:

        1. That’s quite a photo, Beckita. I, too, look forward to and pray for his conversion. Everything he thought he would gain . . . is for naught and worse. I do not wish anyone permanent ill, but I do pray for sincere repentance and conversion. Who would not seek the unfathomable joy to follow?

    4. Daniel Fedele,

      I love saying your name!

I guess what we search for is the absolute truth. We won’t find it here on Earth only in Jesus Christ, The Truth. And it is always good to test and search. Often I ask God to reveal the truth. That can be painful because we may be attached to the lie. 😕

Funny you should say about Charlie’s prophecy. Just this morning I was reminded about all the things he was preparing us for…. chopping wood, making a stand, working with others using our mutual talents, working with people of god will, etc. Very pertinent to what seems to be imminent.

My priest’s homily was on: “what is your response to an atheist as to why you believe in God.” …. so God is preparing us in many ways.

      Glad you’re back!

    1. Welcome to commenting, Cynthia. As you read and, perhaps, take a look at the archives here, you’ll find that we do not spurn prophecy. We’ve mentioned many a Church-approved message on these boards over the years – as well as sharing about prophecies which have not been fully investigated yet – since Charlie established his site. It is the greater wisdom, I think, to take it easy on surety concerning what will actually come to pass in God’s Plan. That’s wisdom borne of the ages as God has communicated to His people through His prophets throughout salvation history and those of every age have been surprised at how God actually brings prophecies to fruition.

I’ve made pilgrimage to Garabandal, have read the book you mention and have viewed the video you have shared here. The Illumination of Conscience has been mentioned beau coup times in this community. I definitely lean toward thinking and hoping God will send a discrete Illumination of Conscience. At the same time, my heart and hands are opened wide to receive whatever He actually does as He intervenes in this man-made mess in which we find ourselves. I really want whatever He wants.

Finally, discussing prophecies is not our major focus here as we continue to live the core message which keeps us sane and in a state of trust and surrender to whatever God is doing: Acknowledge God, take the next right step and be a sign of hope to those around us. Another wonderful summation of our desire to partner with God in bringing about a New Beginning with renewed Church and culture is: Trust. Do. Love.

      God bless you, Cynthia.

  20. Belated Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers with this sunset shot I took on Mother’s Day:

I’ve been snapping away and sharing pics on many channels, particular stuff like this in the celestial realms. It’s been my habit for quite a while to add some commentary to the shots so people have something to further consider, but the silence had me wondering if it was all falling on deaf ears. So, I stopped the accompanying comments to change things up.

Turns out folks (even the least likely) were just waiting for me to shut up and let them tell me what they see. Imagine my delight when so many commented on St. Michael, flaming sword an all, leading the Heavenly host to do battle with satan. Well, mostly moms commented, but I imagine some of their men hovering around.

    1. Judith, I removed the link because there are assertions made which I think are important to verify as actual facts before posting them here. Yes, there are many troubling events which have occurred at the Vatican. Still, when speakers and writers start referring to our Pope as simply “Bergoglio” I think this leads us on a path of confusion where disrespect for the office of the Vicar of Christ could ensue. The greatest concern is that – before clearing such a video – there must be sure and certain proof that Pope Francis is in cahoots with the dark side of the UN’s agenda of globalism. Not saying it isn’t possible in these times of horrific corruption. We simply need proof positive before posting such an accusation here.

RESPONSE TO {MILINET-12 May}: Catholic bishop suspends priest and issues trespass order over blog about clergy sex abuse
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2020/05/09/virginia-bishop-priest-suspended-blog-mccarrick/

    “Dear Reverend Monsignor/Father:

In the process of gathering information for a news article, I am reaching out to you to gain a deeper understanding of Bishop Knestout’s attempt to remove Father Mark White from the parishes to which he is currently assigned. From what I have seen in covering the abuse story for the past 20 years, it appears that the dispute between Knestout and White is intrinsically tied to whether or not Pope Francis and others whom Father White identified on his blog are truly guilty of covering up clerical sex abuse.
Bishop Knestout and Father White would not be at this impasse had an impartial investigation been undertaken and completed involving the cover-up allegations Archbishop Viganò brought against Pope Francis almost two years ago, and more than 18 months since the Pope said an investigation would be undertaken. However, many are asking if one can really expect the Vatican to report that Pope Francis knew about McCarrick’s predation from both Archbishop Viganò and Richard Sipe and yet failed to censure him as Benedict did years earlier.

Many people who viewed Father White’s blog asked questions like: “Why should cardinals like Wuerl, Mahoney and others who were shown to have covered up abuse that cost Catholics hundreds of millions of dollars retain their titles and live opulent lives while people like Tim Curley and Gary Schultz who covered up abuse at Penn State find themselves behind bars?”

If you were a member of a “diocesan jury” and were asked to render a verdict on whether the Pope and Cardinal Wuerl truly did cover-up abuse as Father White alleged in his blog, or whether Bishop Knestout is correct in arguing that these allegations are divisive and false, what might you say to your fellow jurors realizing that there are truly two sides to every story; one which involves the truth, and one which involves a lie.

Please feel free to respond to any of the following questions which might help me write a balanced and informative article:

Bishop Barry Knestout ordered Father White to leave his parishes to work in prison ministry. Do you believe Father White was justified in appealing this order, or do you believe he should have practiced “blind obedience” by moving as ordered?

Do you disapprove of Father White’s blog, or do you believe more priests would be equally outspoken if they were not afraid of being reprised against and find themselves treated in a similar fashion?

After watching this same short video clip from Sex Abuse in the Church: Code of Silence that Father White watched, do you believe the Pope told the truth when he wrote there were no abuse cases in his Buenos Aires Archdiocese that is comprised of 2.5 million Catholics, and that the sex abuse victims lied to the investigative reporter about the Pope covering up their abuse?

Do you believe Father White is unjustly disparaging the ministry of Pope Francis and other Princes of the Church by falsely accusing them of covering up abuse, or do you believe Bishop Knestout – who owes his episcopal appointment to Wuerl and Francis – is covering up for them by attempting to silence White?

If the Pope is innocent of the multiple cover-up charges made against him (including the one involving his failure to address the rape of deaf Argentine orphans), would you find Father White guilty of libel and recommend an even harsher punishment than simply being transferred?

If Bishop Knestout succeeds in getting Father White transferred for alleging that the Pope covered up abuse, and if it is then shown that the Pope covered up not only McCarrick’s case, but also many other abuse cases when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires, do you believe Pope Francis, Bishop Knestout, and other prelates like Cardinal Cupich in Chicago and Bishop Robert McElroy in San Diego who reprised against outspoken priests like Father White, should all be forced to resign in keeping with the Pope’s announced zero tolerance policy?

Thank you for taking time to respond. Unless you explicitly wish to be quoted by leaving your name and phone number, all responses will otherwise be considered strictly confidential.

    Sincerely,
    Gene Thomas Gomulka
Rev. Msgr., CAPT, CHC, USN (Ret.)”

  24. CD, wow, ty for educating us on this major aspect of ongoing corruption. I am glad to see thechallenges/questioning. More of this must happen in every sector.

In CT, hospitalizations are dropping. I’m thinking of the Israeli researcher whose research showed no matter what strategy in 8 weeks a drop-off.

The hairdressers complained about being able to reopen, but not use hairdryers. So Gov. dropped that lunacy. I wonder when the gen. public will challenge the mask narrative. The need to wear masks permanently/ongoingly “until a vax is found” seems to be unchallenged and is meeting no resistance. This greatly troubles me. Everyone needs to stop drinking the Kool Aid and question this. Let’s have a widespread discussion on masks until mandatory vaxing and will this indeed work? What are the percentages of promised cures? Any downsides? Will the virus diminish to be a non-threat so that a vax isn’t needed? Isn’t that what happened with the Spanish Flu?

I’d like to see our churches challenge this. Maybe it is good medicine—-maybe not, The point is, questioning is NOT allowed.

This is breaking news. All about mandatory vax, My state wants to get rid of religious exemption for vaxs and make them mandatory, with no exemptions. Apparently the outgoing DPH commissioner, new since April 2019, didn’t do a good enough job. How does this relate to Dr. Mikovits, I wonder?

My next right step is often just cleaning out a drawer or decade ignored cabinet!!! What a job!!! But like I said, I really am appreciating Charlie’s constant teaching of:

Acknowledge God, take the next right step and be a sign of hope for all those Whom God puts in your path…!’ (Which ain’t many!!!)
