Defining Deviancy Down

Today is the National Rosary Rally, sponsored by the Holy League. It culminates the 54-day Novena for our Nation. It has been a tumultuous time. May God shed his grace on us.

*******

I have been a little under the weather. I broke a tooth off at lunch on Wednesday and spent the next two days getting emergency dental surgery. It left me a bit woozy going into the weekend. As you probably know, I have terrible teeth. It runs in women on my mother’s side of the family. She had full dentures by the time she was 22. I am the only man I know in the family similarly afflicted – but, hey, my love of reading is also an endowment from my Mom, so I’m not complaining. Now I have a partial dental insert. Ha! I lasted longer than any of the others who got the chalk teeth in the family. Sorry I’ve been quiet all week…but it’s been a rough week. (I actually swallowed the tooth before I knew what happened. Fortunately, it did NOT bite me in the rear end on the way out).

*******

I have been disquieted by all the states that are launching their own investigations into the Catholic Church. Given the hierarchy’s utter failure to effectively police itself – and with pretty clear signals from the top that the Vatican is not going to take it seriously any time soon – it was inevitable that this should happen. Heaven knows, if the hierarchy won’t police itself, somebody has to. The problem is that many of the top officials in the states launching investigations are committed enemies of Christianity and of the Church.

The problem for me is that I don’t believe that most of the β€œlavender mafia” (the homosexual schemers in the hierarchy and their fellow travelers) actually believe in God. If they did, how could they so casually dare seek to reject His commands and erect a new set of rules they prefer? No, actually they think the Church is a very powerful man-made institution. Too incompetent to thrive in most any other endeavor, they seek to wield its power while simultaneously denying the source thereof. Most of them are anti-Catholic bigots who want its institutional power for themselves.

Culturally, on the outside, you have atheist neo-fascists who want to destroy the Church’s institutional power. They, too, are anti-Catholic bigots. They fear the power of true belief – and true believers – to thwart their thrust for totalitarian power. They have become a HUGE faction in the culture. Suggestively, the lavender mafia has gone largely political, offering full-throated support for the authoritarian agenda the atheist neo-fascists count on to sweep them to power (regardless of how it violates defined Catholic doctrine). Simultaneously, the cultural warriors have dissembled about the nature and source of the horrific scandals in the Church – downplaying or completely ignoring the homosexual engine that drives the abuse. Instead, they label pedophilia as the problem, even though only 3 percent of the reported abuse involves pedophilia – and that, too, is almost entirely homosexually driven. We have atheist neo-fascists and the lavender mafia working together to destroy the Church or neuter its teachings so it is no longer a threat to the totalitarian dreams of the culture warriors.

We do not protect the Church by defending either the predators or their enablers within the ranks of the hierarchy. Neither do we defend the Church by submitting to the tender mercies of radicalized public officials who seek to destroy it – and act under the guise of protecting the innocent (a subject they show remarkably little interest in when it comes to other public institutions).

Some years back, a friend of mine who headed a regional branch of Catholic Social Services and I undertook to see how deep the sexual abuse problem went in the Church. To our mutual surprise, the striking thing about the incidence of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church was that it was significantly LESS frequent in the Church than in other major cultural institutions, such as public schools, universities, organized sports and such. That does NOT excuse it. The Church is called to be holy, to be a rock of moral virtue in all times. Β It was suggestive, though. Why would the culture warriors seek to focus on the area where the abuse was the least prevalent, unless they were using it as a fig leaf to cover another agenda entirely?

In 1993, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, coined the phrase, β€œdefining deviancy down.” Basically, his thesis was that as we progressively normalize and tolerate disordered and deviant behavior, the incidence of serious assaults on the norms that make civil society possible will grow exponentially and, eventually, threaten the foundations of society, itself. Along the way, we will see a dramatic increase of deviant incidents that are still NOT among those we tolerate. We’re there.

How do you defend traditional institutions in an age when a large portion of the population just tried to slime an actual, veritable choirboy to prevent him from taking a seat on the US Supreme Court? When everything is politicized in a no-holds-barred sort of way, there are no standards and nothing is sacred. The only thing that counts is power. A society based on power alone with no objective moral foundation is bound for revolution, ruin and collapse. Ah, but in America, however ugly the battle, the forces of the great middle, those who respect faith, family and freedom, still do have the power of their numbers and voices. We want to stabilize society, to return it to objective standards of justice and morality – and tolerance. To do that, we have to be far more disciplined and far less emotional than the forces of darkness, though every bit as vigorous and energized. A few suggestions…

Though the Church hierarchy will NOT police itself, many individual Bishops (probably even a majority) are committed to doing so – committed to the faith and transparency. Encourage Bishops to fully investigate scandals in their own Dioceses, setting up independent boards, run by laymen, but including clerics, with full authority to investigate problems and publish their findings and recommendations. Set it up according to classic rules of evidence, affording everyone due process and the presumption of innocence. Leave the final decision in the hands of the Bishop (again, Christ appointed Bishops to run His Church – and I am not inclined to join the merry band of modern men who seek to contradict Christ’s commands). Of course, individual criminal behavior will be adjudicated in the temporal realm. A cleric’s spiritual calling does not exempt him from temporal accountability. Such boards, though, (provided they DO follow due process and the presumption of innocence) can be tools by which Bishops can root out the guilty and defend the innocent. Such an idea is amazingly counter-cultural in these times, but the Church, itself, was perhaps the single most counter-cultural endeavor in history.

As far as state action goes, the state does have the legitimate right to investigate abuses and crimes within the realm of its authority – and should do so. However, it should not and must not be allowed to use such investigations to persecute its enemies while protecting its allies. That, of course, is what most modern β€œinvestigations” and β€œprosecutions” have become. To authentically defend the Church, we can demand that when such an investigation is launched, it must investigate the crimes – not selectively choose targets. That means that it would require investigation into all major institutions. You cannot target the abuses that occur in churches while covering for the much greater incidence of abuse in public schools, universities, the entertainment industry, sports – and all the other institutions that support the atheist neo-fascists. We have defined deviancy down and the consequences infect the whole culture. It is all or nothing. That we can insist upon.

I am spending a lot of time thinking about what our next right steps are now that the ground is shaking beneath our feet, now that the cultural institutions we have relied on for fairness and justice are in deep decline or full collapse. I am thankful to a close friend for giving me the key piece for this matter. When I have a more comprehensive look on all that is before us, that is when I will publish the third part of the Ballad of the Ordinary Man – the Apostolate of the Laity. We are called to be the defenders of truth, justice, faith, family and freedom. We cannot do that by adopting the evil, soulless methods of the atheist neo-fascists. Neither can we do it by being flaccid warriors. It is time to call on the help of St. Joan of Arc, St. George, St. Patrick – and especially the Holy Archangels, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael that we may be true, aggressive and mighty warriors without sinning. Onward to the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart!

  1. Adam was talking to God telling Him how lonely he was.
God said I can give you a mate who will take 24 hour care of you, cooking, cleaning, washing, etc
Adam asked God what it would cost him.
God told him an arm and a leg.
Adam asked God, what can I get for a rib.
    the rest is history.

    1. Ha, For the Sake! πŸ™‚

This reminds me of a joke that I once heard Dr. Alice von Hildebrand tell (I saw it on a video, probably on EWTN, many years back). Well, actually, it wasn’t a joke. Some guy told her (I’m not sure if he was joking or if he was just an arrogant jerk) that women were merely made from Adam’s rib. She responded, “Well, that’s better than being made from the slime of the earth.”

  2. When I read pieces with these kind of reports and questions, I feel a sure and certain HOPE that we are very close to all things being revealed: long hidden agendas, covert evil and our own hearts as we respond to all that comprises this journey through the Storm. Christ HAS, IS and WILL keep His Promises that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church.

Rod Dreher’s latest is here and entitled with the question:
    Francis Abolishing Family Norms?

At #Synod2018 Presser; Cardinal Juan JosΓ© Omella says “As old folks we should not be afraid to embark on this new path the Pope is pointing out to us. It is a path that is leading us to new kinds of families, new family relations, and we should not be afraid to open up to this”
    6:20 AM – Oct 13, 2018 (https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js)

I would like to hear the context in which the cardinal archbishop of Barcelona made this comment. Perhaps it is less worrying than it seems here β€” but I doubt it.

Did you ever think you would see the Catholic Church deconstruct and abandon its own fundamental moral tradition on marriage and family as Francis and his team are now doing? It’s happening so fast. Remember what top Francis advisor Father Thomas Rosica wrote recently:

Pope Francis breaks Catholic traditions whenever he wants because he is β€œfree from disordered attachments.” Our Church has indeed entered a new phase: with the advent of this first Jesuit pope, it is openly ruled by an individual rather than by the authority of Scripture alone or even its own dictates of tradition plus Scripture.

    Let the reader understand.

UPDATE: News from the Synod working group headed by Cardinal Cupich of Chicago:

Also, there are many other forms of family other than the nuclear family or the extended family. We had a debate in our small group about non-ideal groupings from the Christian perspective. Does leadership in the Church require bishops and priests to proclaim the Gospel truth by denying that these are families? Or does our leadership require us to accompany the young people in the reality in which they find themselves? Perhaps these are not contradictory realities: St John recounts that Jesus both accepted the woman caught in adultery and proposed something else. Is it possible for us to both accept and even honour the family unit that a young person finds herself in and to share the Gospel ideal to her?

And, Catholic theologian Larry Chapp, in the comments:

I highly doubt that Pope Francis will just flat-out repudiate the Catholic doctrine that marriage is a life long sacramental union of one man and one women for the purpose of mutual support and procreation. For starters…. he can’t. Those are clearly infallible teachings of the Church and if he were to just repudiate them, there would be a schism, without a doubt, and open rebellion to his legitimacy as Pope. Now, maybe that is his end game, but even if it is, the time is not yet ripe for such a move.

Rather, look to the methodology followed in Amoris. Do not openly deny any doctrine, just undermine it in actual pastoral practice by calling for more β€œdiscernment” and paying attention to β€œconcrete experiences” and so on.

That is how the Pope will get acceptance of β€œgay” families in the Church. He will call for pastors to β€œaccompany” such individuals in order to β€œdiscern” if they are doing the very best they can to live up to the Church’s β€œideals”. And if they are doing their best, to let them take communion, since living the commandments, as Cardinal Kasper said with regard to those divorced and remarried, is only for the β€œheroic”.

The same approach could also be applied to contraception and co-habitation. The doctrine will be affirmed as an β€œideal”, with different individuals falling into a spectrum on how close they are to the ideal. And so long as they are at peace in their own conscience, no matter how poorly formed, then they can go to communion. This will be done under the banner of β€œpastoral” sensitivity and an opposition to β€œrigid” rules. The appeal will be to an β€œinclusive” Catholicism that has a β€œbig tent” that allows for almost everyone to go to communion under the guise of a kind of β€œgradualism” in moral matters. This view was condemned explicitly by JPII. But heck… that was a long time ago and who remembers that stuff?

The goal is obviously to someday eliminate the doctrine of infallibility completely, and to create practices in the Church that make such behaviors and lifestyles commonplace, so that when the doctrines are eventually changed, nobody will even notice or care. Since the Church does have a Magisterium, in order for the Roman Church to go full-on Episcopalian, you have to first destroy that Magisterium. But that has to be done in steps. And it begins by β€œallowing” behaviors that the Church has heretofore infallibly said no to. Over time, it will just become obvious to everyone that nobody really believes any of that silly medieval nonsense anymore and the transformation into liberal Episcopalians will be complete.

But why bother with such a ruse? Why not just have Francis publicly repudiate the doctrine of infallibility, change some central moral teachings, and foment a schism letting the chips fall where they may? Why not let the damn homophobic conservatives run off to Orthodoxy or to the schismatic traditionalists? The answer is simple, though shocking. So shocking many will refuse to accept it. Why don’t they just make their move and let the conservatives bolt out the door? Because this gaggle of progressives is demonic. And I mean that in a very real way and not as just a hyperbolic metaphor. What they seek is nothing short of the total annihilation and humiliation of the conservatives by way of a total reversal of values: the good becomes evil and the evil good. They want conservatives discredited as β€œfringe group” wing nuts so that they cannot even mount a populist revolt from the outside. They want to rob them of any constituency and of any legitimacy. They want them labeled as β€œbad people”. They want, as the Pope has recently done, to cast their conservative enemies as Satan, and themselves as Jesus. They want the opposition liquidated so that there isn’t even the appearance any longer of a β€œdebate”. They want opposition to gay families and abortion and sexual libertinism to be viewed right up there with opposition to racial equality, thus painting the defenders of traditional morality, not just as β€œwrong”, but as stupid at best, and evil at worst.

Finally, it is demonic because the end game is a de facto secularist atheism. Naturalism with a religious halo. Worldliness dressed up as β€œinclusive diversity”. The average person in the pew is unaware that for the better part of the past two centuries the Christian theological guild has, for the most part, reinterpreted Jesus in completely non supernatural categories. This is especially true among scholars of the New Testament. Jesus has been transformed. No longer the second person of the Trinity, Incarnate for our salvation, but rather, now just a protagonist of class warfare on the side of the β€œmarginalized” and in opposition to β€œpower”. And if you are a traditional Christian you are thus categorized as part of that β€œpower” that oppresses.

So faith in Jesus as the Incarnate God comes to be viewed as a form of patriarchal, white male, cisnormative oppression. The faith of our ancestors and of the martyrs, was merely a cipher for hegemonic power and control.

Wake up. I know most people are not theologians and are not knoweldgeable of intellectual and cultural history, but we no longer have the luxury of such ignorance. And part of any Ben Op community must be an education precisely into the richest resources of our Tradition and of the manner in which hyper-modernity (liquid modernity) is destroying them. The situation of any true Ben Op community is not enviable. For we must now labor to preserve our past, not in the face of pagan barbarity, but in a swirling cesspool of post-Christian hatred (a visceral and irrational hatred I might add) and the aforementioned reversal of values. In other words, a true Ben Op community is going to be hated. Vilified. Attacked. Hounded into submission. Just look at the Youth Synod’s little dig at home schoolers for being β€œideological”. And our public schools aren’t? Of course they are. But they have a β€œgood” ideology. Homeschoolers have an evil one.

We had better get ready for what is rapidly approaching. Already, in the few short years since Rod published the Ben Op, we have seen things grow exponentially worse. And the brief respite purchased for us by the wretched clown that is Donald Trump, will not last long. Indeed, in my view, it will only create a far worse backlash once he is gone because we will be blamed for him being in power in the first place. We will be the scapegoat.

And because the secular worldview, especially in its emphasis on an empty Epicurean hedonism, is so nihilistic, only unhappiness will follow in its wake. It advocates an impossible marriage with matter, that cannot satisfy, it will create resentment and hostility in an undifferentiated manner … just a general dissipation and acedia of the soul that leads to despair. And that will only make their rage at traditional religious people all the more incendiary.

I wish that these comments at the Youth Synod on marriage were just a mild stupidity by a nobody prelate that we can just dismiss. But we can’t. This IS what these quislings think.

We face a more radical decision in the near future than we think.

      1. With eyes on Christ, acknowledge God via a rich prayer life enhanced with sacrifice and fasting, follow Our Mother’s wisdom: “Do whatever He tells you.” – that is, take the next right step – and God will surely make of us a sign of hope to those around us.

    1. As if deviancy couldn’t go any further down from the pit we are in we have this: Witches are placing a hex on Justice Brett Kavanaugh. A ceremony in NYC. Going to hex him monthly.

Fr. Heilman is on this. Has requested everybody to pray for Brett Kavanaugh by praying the St Patrick Lorica. You can find it here:

      https://www.romancatholicman.com/saint-patricks-lorica-protection-president-trump/

This is a beautiful prayer we are saying daily for Brett Kavanaugh’s protection.

Be sure to watch the vid at the bottom of this link. Beautiful. Irish. I believe it was shot at the Rock of Cashel in Ireland. Was there a couple of years ago.

We stood in the courtyard where King Angus was baptized by St Patrick and heard this hilarious tale of the baptism. The crozier is in the museum on the Rock. Yup. It happened.

      1. This prayer IS a beauty, Ed. The witches have been after President Trump throughout his tenure.

A reminder from Fr. Carlos Martins:
Hexes, spells, and curses are real and can have a devastating effect on someone. The process of freeing someone from these can often take years. I have worked with many people who needed these undone. Unfortunately, some suffer horribly under their weight, and are stuck with them their whole earthly life.

Greater than the effect of hexes, spells, and curses, however, is the effect of preventative prayer. Offer a rosary or two for Justice Kavanaugh BEFORE October 20 (Kavanaugh Hex Day).

If the dark side wants him taken down so much, what does that tell you about him? In revealing their tactics, the minions of Satan are informing you a great deal about the Justice.

Christian soldier, arm yourself and be part of the fight. Ask Our Lady to have any curse, hex, or spell, leveled at Justice Kavanaugh to go through her maternal hands first so that she may render it ineffective.

        God bless Justice Kavanaugh.

        1. The forces of evil want a figurative knife fight with Justice Kavanaugh. We need to bring our guns (our Rosaries) to the knife fight.

God bless Justice Kavanaugh, indeed. And may his family also be protected through our intercession, and through the intercession of the Blessed Mother.

    2. Yikes.

All I can think is, “Praise God, and pass the ammunition.” And by “ammunition,” I mean more Rosaries. I have to believe that the Holy Father was divinely inspired when he requested that all Catholics, during the month of October, pray the Rosary, the St. Michael Prayer, and the Sub Tuum Praesidium. I don’t know what he hopes or expects to be the result, but I’m confident that Our Lady and the Prince of the Heavenly Host are going to respond in a huge, magnificent way–in defense of Holy Mother Church; and in defense of the eternal, perfect, unchangeable Truth that will set us free.

      1. I see from your earlier reply to Billbad that Father John’s birthday must be about the 18th, feast of Saint Luke. Preparations, while hectic, can be a lot of fun – enjoy Beckita!

        1. You’re correct, Karen. The Padre’s actual birthday is the 18th. The celebration is on the 20th, beginning with a Mass of Thanksgiving and followed by a party with a meal and presentation.

I’m behind in putting together his life story using PowerPoint as the β€œstoryboard”platform. It’s been 14 years since I’ve used PP and have run into some snags. Thanking God for a young priest who has helped me immensely in figuring the way out of them. Delightfully, I’m incorporating photos from as far back as the 40’s.

I decided to redux a song I composed fo him 30 years ago and am adapting lyrics to do so.

Actually, we could produce an epic movie with all the wee stories within the wondrous big story. Here’s a short video – with some stories within the story – we made at the inception of our China project five years ago.

          1. Glad to watch this clip again thanks Beckita especially with the addresses at the end for those who wish to support this modern-day St Luke and his China mission. I think I spotted you in one of the photos? You stood out among all the Chinese. Maybe someone at the celebration will take another video of you singing/playing your renovated song to Father.

              1. Karen, in going through photos to use in the presentation, I came upon a more recent shot, from a few years ago that’s not a moving target, of the Three Musketeers of Evangelization as we were sightseeing on the seashore at Qingdao. On the left is Paul, Father’s nephew, who is our point man on Chinese soil. This incredible man, my first Godchild from the clan, is filled with zeal and working overtime coordinating our efforts there.

              2. House sold relatively quickly and have signed up on new place this week – moving day will be Nov. 23rd. Taking our fourth trailer load of shed/landscaping gear over tomorrow – it is 6 hour return trip. Gradually boxing up things inside for a final truck load on moving day. Yes, it does take time and the Lord is thankfully providing – all calm at the moment but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is just the eye of the storm!! Thank you for asking and for prayers.

Three wonderful muskateers! The situation in China does seem precarious as it does with Russia/Ukraine. No mainstream reporting at this stage because the roiling is unseen. We can only place our ‘helplessness’ and desire for true conversion for all into the Holy and Divine Will, where the Lord will work His Wonders for Peace and Unity.

                1. Wow, Karen! That’s one major transition you’re in. Admiring your gradual approach as it sounds like a path to sanity in the midst of all that needs to be accomplished. I have moved rarely in life but when I did, I was always refreshed in taking the opportunity to consider what might be pared from possessions.

I continue to follow the erudite Victor Davis Hanson with his insights on the national and world scene. Here‘s one of his recent pieces on what he calls the China-Russia-U .S. Triangle.

  3. Well I guess I’m now Public Enemy #1, being the fringe nut job of the piece. It’s nice to get a head’s up, I suppose. Finally I’m on somebody’s hit list.( I hope I get that Mossberg I asked for on Christmas. At least I know I’ll hit something when I point and shoot before I do that backward somersault from the recoil. I’d probably get a ten form the Olympic judges just for being able to get back up.)
Is this end game really this close? Jesus has been reduced to another historical figure – if He even existed at all- and now we are back to the caterwauling of feministas about rich white Christian males being to blame for even God’s will. Take me now, Lord. I don’t want to live to see what happens at the end! Who would have believed?( Although I take umbrage at the unkind description of Trump. He’s way more than a joke, and he’s there through divine intervention. I’m going to go to my little prayer room and curl up and wait for death now.

Spend time outdoors with my hubby. Staying close to Jesus, Our Lady, Our Holy Angels, and all the Saints for comfort and protection. Result, peace.

    3. St. Joan, I understand where you’re coming from. But Our Lord, Our Lady, the Church, and the ASOH community need you now… Mossberg or no. Speeches aren’t my thing: I could never pull off the Braveheart speech or the speech from the end of the last Lord of the Rings movie. But I do know this: Ecclesiastes 4:12 (“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken”). You and I make two. You and I and God make three. And if a cord of you, me, and God is not easily broken, then a cord of you, me, God, our Lady, all ASOH’ers, and all prayerful people of good will must be unbreakable. Yes, we will undoubtedly lose some battles; but we will win the war if we stay united to God, Our Lady, and each other. We’ve got your back, just as you’ve got ours. So let us all buck up and Joan Up, because Christ has given us his promise: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” πŸ™‚

But speaking of Mossbergs… did you ask for a rifle or a shotgun? Back when I was about 20 and was just learning to shoot, a friend let me shoot his Mossberg “over-and-under.” I’d never shot a shotgun before, and certainly not a 12 gauge. The recoil literally knocked me flat on my back. I lay there dazedly looking up at the sky while my buddy and his brother laughed their heads off at me. Good times, good times…. πŸ™‚

      1. I need the shotgun because I’m losing my eyesight and need to be able to hit something. But I seriously want a weapon. I may look vulnerable but I don’t have to be vulnerable!
I am so disappointed in the USA. Back when I was first married, my husband was a DI at Parris Island. That and the fact I have seven children has molded me to be fearless. I’ve done it all: principal’s office, ER, police station and hooorah nonsense. But never have I seen such vitriol and animosity over political differences. This is NOT the country I grew up in. I’m a drama queen, too, in case you haven’t noticed, but I know God and the blessed Mother are sending me through the fire to turn my rust into a refined metal. I’m thinking I should be dazzling by now!
Thank you all for prayers. Right back atcha!

  4. I have been saying the Saint Patrick Breastplate for over a year now. Offering it for all Priests from Holy Father to the simplest Priest. I started beginning of May 2017.

We were always taught from childhood; as long as you remain in a state of Grace, no harm can come to you by way of evil from witchy type of people or anyone trying to wish you harm in any way. At least that is what we were taught. In fact we were taught that if any person wished ill on you when you are in a state of Grace, the ill is returned to the person who wished it in the first place.

If what we were taught is correct; Judge Kavanaugh will be safe as long as he is in a state of Grace. Now, I have a brother in USA, and he tells me Kavanaugh converted to Mormonism a few years ago. I wonder if that is true. He would need all the prayers he can get if he deserted the Barque of Peter.

Maybe some of you who visit this site might know for sure Justice Kavanaugh is still a practising Catholic. I sure hope he is.

Thank God President Trump is Teflon coated when it comes to ill will towards him. Nothing sticks, and with the help and protection of God, no evil will harm him; he has a mission to accomplish.

    1. It is incorrect that Justice Kavanaugh converted to Mormonism. In fact, in a short speech he gave at his ceremonial confirmation at the White House (which I saw on YouTube), he thanked, among others, his close Catholic community in Washington, DC. They have been a godsend to the Kavanaugh family during this time.

  5. I’m not smart enough to know The Deal with China but it does not smell good to me. I’m doubting that the Pope will go to Taiwan as it would upset the ChiComs and their Pals in the Global Left.

I’d like to think that The Faithful have awakened and will not rest until the 50 year Lavender Abomination is exorcised and the Abortion Horror Show is exposed.
