Enthrone Our Lady of America

our lady of america

(I am an enthusiastic advocate for enshrining the statue of Our Lady of America in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. I think it is key to re-evangelizing the world. The following guest column is from Dan Lynch, who has been the foremost advocate for Our Lady of America in the world. By the way, my email box has been flooded of late. If it takes a bit for me to get back to you, please be patient.-CJ)

By Dan Lynch

Why Isn’t the Statue of Our Lady of America, Who Asked America for Purity, Displayed in Her Shrine?

Perhaps it’s because over the last 18 years her shrine has been administered by two Archbishop and Cardinal Directors who have been accused of participating in the clerical homosexual sex abuse crisis.

September 26 is the 62nd anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of America to Sister Mildred Mary Neuzil. Let us begin the purification of the Church with Our Lady of America.

Our Lady of America said, “I am the Immaculate One, Patroness of your Land.” She asked America for sexual purity and it gave her instead the Sexual Revolution and the current sexual crises with the practice of clerical homosexuality and clerical enabling of clerical homosexual activity and clerical homosexual abusers.

In response to the request of Our Lady of America, approximately 9000 of our supporters have signed our Petition for the Solemn Procession and Placement of the Statue of Our Lady of America in what she called “my shrine”.

For the last 18 years, Our Lady’s shrine has been administered by ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick followed by Cardinal Donald Wuerl. Both of them have been accused of participating in the clerical homosexual sex abuse crisis.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will meet in Baltimore, November 13-14, for their Fall General Assembly. Now is the time to purify the Church and the shrine and to honor the request of Our Lady of America. St. Peter wrote, “For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God.” (1 Peter 4:17).

I ask you to please sign the Petition and to practice the devotion to Our Lady of America for the intention that our Bishops receive the grace to fulfill her request for the solemn procession and display of her statue in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

We can’t “push” the Bishops to do this, only the Holy Spirit can. Our Lady does not want to force her way into her our own shrine. She wants the Bishops from their hearts to solemnly process, welcome, display and venerate her statue in her shrine. We pray that our Bishops’ response to our petitions will be like the response of both Pope Pius IX and Pope Pius XII. They referred to the petitions of the faithful as one of the criteria that led them to the final acts of papally defining the Marian dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption.

If you have not signed the Petition, please do so right now.

When our Bishops provide some strong indication that they will respond to Our Lady’s request, we will then submit our petitions to them to lead them to the final act of the solemn procession and placement of the statue.

In a letter dated May 31, 2007, Archbishop (now Cardinal) Raymond Burke wrote to all of the United States Bishops and informed them that the devotion to Our Lady of America was canonically approved. You may read his letter here. Since then, over eleven years ago, to my knowledge, the Bishops have done nothing to respond to Our Lady’s request for the procession and display of her statue in her shrine.

Vince Lombardi, the famous football coach, said that the best defense is a good offense. It seems that the Bishops are using natural secular defensive measures such as revising their policies and procedures to deal with the clerical homosexual abuse crises. However, they should be using offensive supernatural measures such as prayer, penance, sacrifice, reparation and, most particularly, their honoring of all of the requests of Our Lady of America and venerating her image in her shrine. The statue of the Queen of Our Country must be displayed in our National Shrine for what she called “a safeguard for our country” and to avoid her prophesied punishment. You may read here about Our Lady’s Warning and Grace for the United States.

Jesus said, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” (Luke 8:21). Many of our Bishops have heard the word of God requesting the display of his mother’s statue, spoken through His mother, Our Lady of America, but they have not acted on it. They need the grace to believe Our Lady’s request and to act on it. We need to pray that they receive this grace. May that grace bring about the purification of her Church and her shrine from the corrupt homosexual clergymen whose sins cry out to heaven for vengeance. May the victims of their abuse be healed and the holy, pure and faithful priests, religious and laity be fortified in faith, hope and perseverance.

We say ENOUGH! What can you do to bring about the purification of the Church and to fortify the people of God in faith, hope and perseverance? We recommend that everyone do at least one of the following. Now is the time to pray and to act! You can lead a life of purity and peace and pray and sacrifice for the display and veneration of the statue of Our Lady of America in the National Shrine.

You can combat the moral evils of our culture and become a missionary to the culture by educating and forming your conscience according to the moral truths taught by the Church. Then you can express these truths in conversations with your family, friends and co-workers in your daily life. You can write letters to the editors of newspapers and to those in government expressing these moral truths.

You can and should vote for persons who support the moral teachings of the Church and against those who oppose them. Catholics have a moral obligation to promote the common good through the exercise of their vote. (See CCC 2240).

  1. Amen! Thanks, Dan and Charlie. I had already signed the petition and have now ordered a copy of the image (Oh My Goodness, we have a plethora of Marian images here 🙂 ) to venerate her while praying to seek the fulfillment of all her desires to help us once we honor her request for the enthronement.

  2. It is such a simple solution to such a massive mess. I was just pondering- both Pope Francis and President Trump were validly elected. No double standard can be applied. Both elections must be accepted. Who would ever have thought that the former playboy Trump would be the one to stand up for family values while the Vicor of Christ would attempt to tear them down. I heard about Our Lady of America decades ago and couldn’t understand why there was no action taken. Now I see why nothing happened. Bishops of America, let’s get this done! Dan, thank you for leading the charge. Thank you for not giving up!

  3. Thank you Charlie, Beckita, and the others who are involved in running A Sign of Hope site. I appreciate the encouragement and, yes, the hope, that your site provides in these chaotic, confusing times. (Great name for the site – by the way.) Thank you, also Dan Lynch, for persevering in the very important Our Lady of America devotion.

Although I check in frequently, I’ve only posted once before – a few years ago – and that was regarding Our Lady of America. Although Our Lady of America apparitions occurred in the 1950s, I had only just found out about her much later – about 2015. And when I did “accidentally” find out about her, I cried. I felt betrayed and upset. So much suffering occurred because Our Lady of America’s requests were not honored. Suffering – not only for me – but for countless others as we watched our children and other loved ones, drift into spiritual death. Our Lady of America had promised more miracles than Fatima and Lourdes combined. She promised that these would be miracles of conversions. CONVERSIONS! What???? This was exactly, what, I – and so many other Christian mothers – had been begging for from God. I couldn’t understand. We couldn’t understand. Our reactions were similar. “How come we haven’t heard of this?” “What? Why haven’t the Bishops already done this?!!” “I don’t understand.” “WHY DON’T THEY DO THIS?!”

It seemed Our Lady has had these extraordinary graces of countless conversions, ready and waiting, in her hands, for over sixty years now. However, to obtain these graces, she had asked for the Bishops of the United States to process and enshrine her – as Our Lady of America – into the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This very simple request is the stumbling block. Not only I, but many other mothers, felt betrayed by our “spiritual fathers.” The spiritual “food” was there, just waiting – while our children starved to death. We could not understand how any “father” would let his children starve to death while he either examined the food (over sixty years now of examining) or just ignored the food. No. No true “father” would have done this. We mothers all knew that if Our Lady had asked ANY of us to do this, it would have been done yesterday. You can’t begin to count our tears.

Even now, within the last few weeks, it continues. I had a chance recently to speak with a Bishop about the upcoming USCCB in November and the possibility of Our Lady of America being processed into the Basilica. He told me that (paraphrasing) they would be “too busy” to discuss Our Lady of America at the USCCB. “Too busy with other things” to even to take a half afternoon off and process the prepared statue into the Basilica. It seems that human solutions will again be sought for supernatural problems.

So many souls have gone to hell – souls that otherwise would have experienced the conversions Our Lady so eagerly had wanted to give us. So many children beloved of so many parents. Some many children beloved of Mary. Perhaps if all my children were “safely” in the Church, perhaps I would not have so much passion for conversions. And would care less about Our Lady of America’s promises. But then again, that would be selfish of me. And I think that is the lesson I was taught through my own unexpected sufferings. Our Lady suffers with every soul that is lost as IF it is her own beloved child. Please, Bishops, rise up with courage. Help Our Mother in her grief. You are not alone. We are with you. Do not be afraid.

    1. Amen, Dr. Rae. And Amen. Thank you for this reflection. You’ve captured so many of my own sentiments about saving souls, these times, the too many occasions when the clergy and laity have ignored not only the requests of Our Lady of America, but many of Our Lady’s requests made at the various places throughout the world where she has appeared in this Age of Mary. That said, I, too, have failed. My sins have contributed to this mess in which we find ourselves, yet, Our Mother pursued me and drew me closer to her Son. She IS our model of femininity and maternity: She never gives up. Never. Ever. She never ceases to try another way to nudge, prod, coax, exhort and show her children yet another way on the path Home to her Son. Total intuition here: I sense that while the Bishops ignore Our Lady of America now, they will be looking for her as God allows this effusion of His purifying grace to continue pouring forth. May She who is the Highest Honor of our Race be honored by our resolve to never give up, interceding day by day, for our own families and for all families, until at last, we reach the Shores of Rescue.

      1. Over centuries, Our Lady asks (present tense) man to change his evil ways and turn back to God through prayer, sacrifices, and penances to avert suffering from a chastisement. Our Lady of Fatima stated in 1917 that unless man changed there would be another, greater war…which indeed came to pass because we, of course, failed to change. Our collective obstinance is a given, yet Our Blessed Mother continues to love us, pray for us, and patiently encourage us to listen to her warnings and message.

Are there ANY examples in history that we can cite where man sufficiently heeded Our Lady’s warnings to preempt a chastisement? Or do we always fail to listen and do our part? That may be tough to do, proving a negative.

        1. What does come to mind, Patrick, is the mitigation which has been procured from those who *have* responded to Our Lady’s calls for conversion and intercessory prayer. The process of her Triumph proceeds with every individual who makes a return to the Lord. Charlie has told us the length of the Storm has been shortened due to such mitigating forces.

          1. Ah, right. It’s not “all-or-nothing” — smitten or not smitten — but gradations. So there has been positive change resulting from the individual sacrifices and prayers made by those who do heed Her call. And Charlie is in such a position to relay this to us. I forget that events in time are not etched in stone but are in a state of change that vary with our participation.

            1. I’m almost positive that I read about one of the Medjugorje visionaries saying that one of the secrets or chastisements would be less severe because of the response to Mama’s call to pray.

    1. Beckita, Father Z has a blog entry that I just read about this. He says that the Crux article needs to be clarified, and he posts a letter from the leader of this group. These are days, more than ever, when words must be chosen carefully. God bless all!

      1. Thanks, Annie. I just hopped over to Fr. Z’s blog to have a read. I still think there must be collaboration between faithful prelates AND laity, just as the TRUE spirit of Vatican II proclaimed.

In answer to Dr. Rae, I recall Our Lady of America mentioned in Queen Magazine and Leaves magazine, and it may have been mentioned in Soul Magazine. However, it was, back in the 1970s, roundly dismissed/derided as old fashioned pre-Vatican II devotional piety. It is hard for us to understand the diabolical contempt towards Marian devotions that existed. I saw Marian shrines dismantled in the name of that so called renewal.

To quote Gandalf in the Return of the King, we need men of “less lore and more wisdom” like Dan Lynch who fearlessly promote this devotion.

  5. Last week I posted this to all my friends

My heart broke to see what they did to Gods appointed Samuel. Hopefully there is another Deborah and they both will champion the cause of innocent babies but make no mistake this spiritual battle is real. I am 100% confident with the endgame Mary’s immaculate heart will Triump and his name besides our Lion POTUS will be as well. I will pray for his suffering just like our Lords and that his name be cleared. I also hope there is a Tsunami of a red wave comming that will forever leave these sick people paralyzed for centuries to come and there is no chance of recovery as is Pope Leo’s vision. These evil people will face military tribunals this I hope and is in POTUS hands. Remember POTUS is strong he knows how to use leverage to win and it doesn’t matter what MSM says everyone laughted at him at the UN in reality they are all begging for a deal as is leftist Justin Tradeau.I wish I was as humble as him to ignore all the wrongs of the bullies and look the other way and move on.

Trust you God and Beloved POTUS Trump and my heart goes out to innocent Kavanaugh. We are at war!

  6. Charlie/Beckita please post the catholic version of psalm 40 but for now this is urgent.

    https://churchmousec.wordpress.com/2018/09/30/judge-kavanaughs-wifes-prayer-request-psalm-40/.

Please pray and fast for Kavanaugh that he has to be conformed this week period! Listen to the psalm Ashley Kavanaugh has chosen and meditate over it and pray for the family.

Even if you dislike POTUS Trump(As is everyone I know despite they listening to the media and forget so many lies are unproven) there is nothing wrong with saying the psalm 40 so goodness prevails over evil. I was shown in my dream very clearly 2 stars would collide to bring on the warning.

This is the battle and our prayers matter as if satan loses his place in the most influential place in the world the rest will follow. So let us join the suffering and burden of this beloved family let them know they are not alone. Ashley seems to have chosen the perfect prayer and she knows and i saw that in Judge Kavanaugh defence. Many wont pray and join saying he is toast, he is smeared, they were caught unaware and it’s too late and why worry this is not our fight. It does period! Please pray and fast!.

    God Bless.

    1. Josh, the psalm in the link is beautiful. I remembered the Kavanaugh family at Mass today. It was the feast of the Guardian Angels and I was touched by the readings. It felt like God was saying to me, He is looking out for Judge Kavanaugh and His family.

I truly believe God is very active just now, and in His Mercy, may He fill us with joy at His protection and assistance during this Spiritual Warfare at the highest levels, between the powers and principalities. For surely that is what we are watching.

I could say so much more about what I feel interiorly in the Judge Kavanaugh process unveiling before our eyes; but it is not my place to say more than ‘Keep Watch and Pray.’

  7. I must add another thing. Despite all of his faults, Pope Francis has played a great role in encouraging popular devotional piety to our Lady. His recent call regarding the rosary for the month of October are a case in point. So, let us follow his lead with the rosary.

    1. Pope Francis surely has shared his great devotion to Our Lady, James. I’d wager most of us in this cyber family do pray a daily Rosary and the St. Michael Prayer. Too, October is traditionally a month when we honor Our Lady with her Latin calendar Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary next Sunday. That the Holy Father asks us to say these prayers, this month, for the Church is fitting. Looking forward to how Our Lord and Our Lady respond to our pleas for help.

  8. Charlie – and fellow squirrels – I strongly encourage you to read and ponder Rod Dreher’s piece titled “Snow falling in the sacred temple”. It is on The American conservative website and I am too technoignorant to be able to set up the link. It is lengthy and dense but certainly worth the effort. I will continue to reread it as I think he has indicated a direction for us to follow in all this chaos. I look forward to reading your thoughts on this. Beckita? Steve?

    1. I have read it. Sadly, Dreher, bright as he is, does NOT believe the Church is a Divine Institution, so he believes it can be destroyed by human efforts. I am sure (particularly these days) that many agree with him. But I am not one of them. I do pick up some good ideas from Dreher, as he is quite intelligent. But since he does not believe in the Divine Institution of the Church, his methods depend on man’s efforts to save a man-made institution that may, at times, be pleasing to God but is not actually from God. I believe in the next right step, following God’s lead somewhat opportunistically, knowing that he will save His Church – and has no need of me, though each of us can cooperate and participate in His plan.

      Liked by 9 people

      1. Whoa, Charlie!! Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater! I am not in a position to evaluate Mr Dreher’s philosophies……I just found much of what he commented to be insightful and, at times hopeful. One point: “to be human is to endure other humans and indeed ourselves….the Greek is telling him he should trust in God’s mercy but also never forget his own capacity for sin.” I think this is how we come to forgiveness – by enduring others and being aware of our own failures. I also liked that he remarked that we should not lose sight of beauty…..that grace and beauty can emerge from destruction. I have to say that I think each one of us is – if not essential – at least necessary to Our Lord. We are loved, cherished and here for God’s purposes – even if our responses are not perfect.
In any event, thanks for your answer.

    2. Calamity Jane, I thought, as I was reading the piece, perhaps how different the writers would have reflected had they been journeying with us here. It DOES seem as though evil is winning, but we know that can never be… we know the Rescue has begun… we know that for all of this rot in the Church’s interior which had been growing and festering for too many years, Christ’s Light NOW penetrates its darkness and we have hope for reforming and rebuilding… we know the Triumph of Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart will bring the Rescue to completion… we know the way through the worst of all of this: acknowledging God with complete reliance on Him and with gratitude, taking the next right steps as best we can and allowing Him to make of us a sign of His Hope to others.

I will say, too, I had no idyllic childhood which is not surprising as I consider the vision Pope Leo XIII had that compelled him to write the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer. I’m so very grateful that the past has been and continues to be renewed in the Scripture verse which rises in my spirit even in the current darkness: “Behold! I make all things new.” Just exactly how that will unfold is in God’s Plan and Providence. We have been given hints via the 20th Century mystics, much of which says, in another way, the very kinds of hints Charlie has been conveying since he initiated TNRS-ASOH. We DO have a future full of Hope and Joy!

      1. Dear Beckita – thanks much for your time and effort to reply. As I mentioned to Charlie, I thought that the descriptions in this piece were apt to our time. “What makes snow falling…so terrible is not only…that something holy has been profaned and destroyed but also that grace and beauty can emerge from that destruction.” I guess that is what you are pointing out in the second paragraph. I do not find the piece dark or hopeless – just descriptive and thought-provoking. Sending prayers and blessings to all who visit here. CJ

    1. With an emphasis on Luke 24: 13-33.

“What were you speaking of?” They did not recognize him. Why? Human thinking. Limited vision.

He did not aim at earthly power.

What words had He spoken? Did they forget? They no longer knew what to think.

“Oh, how foolish you are and how hard to understand. And how slow you are in believing the words of the Prophets!”

The restructuring of the Kingdom of Israel was not limited, in the mind of God, in time, in space, and in means, as it is in men.

Jesus breaks and serves the Bread.

      The two recognize Him.

Hearts on fire, they are no longer tired or hungry. Let us go.

    1. Yes, this is pretty creepy stuff.

Christine Blasey Ford was asked how she decided after all these years to write the July 30th letter to Feinstein. She replied that she received encouragement to come out from her BEACH FRIENDS to do her civic duty.

At one point in the hearing I believe it was Sen. Cornyn who challenged Sen Feinstein about who leaked the famous July 30th letter Feinstein that she sat on until about a week before the hearing to confirm Judge Kavanaugh. Causing all the commotion and request for further FBI investigation.

Feinstein said she didn’t leak the letter to the press. Cornyn asked if her staff leaked the letter to the press. Feinstein said she didn’t thinks so. Then she turned around to her staff and after a 3 second conversation replied to Cornyn: I just asked them and my staff says they didn’t leak the letter.

Appears then that NOBODY leaked the letter. Cornyn seems perplexed. Asks Feinstein if you didn’t leak the letter and your staff didn’t leak the letter and ONLY you and your staff and her Congresswoman had the letter — as testified to by Ford — then how did it get leaked?

Feinstein leaned over and looked at Cornyn with a kind of dumbfounded expression. After hesitating a moment she replied : She had BEACH FRIENDS. Her BEACH FRIENDS encouraged Blasey-Ford to submit the letter in the first place. Ford testified to that. THEY could have leaked the letter.

Feinstein dropped the leak dime on the BEACH FRIENDS. Pointed right at them.

Beach Friends? What Beach Friends? Who were these Beach Friends and what was the Beach?

Seems now that at least one of those BEACH FRIENDS was Ms. Monica L. McLean. 1984 classmate at Holten-Arms School for girls in Maryland. Reputed life – long best friend of Christine Blasey Ford. The Beach was Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Where Christine Blasey Ford was staying at the end of July, 2018 and in particular on July 30th, 2018 the day the letter was signed and forwarded to Sen. Diane Feinstein.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is apparently where a lot of this story was put together.

Do you think Christine Blasey Ford sitting in Monica L. McLean’s beach house on July 30th 2018, her life long friend and recently retired FBI Special Agent/PIO, would not discuss the letter before posting it to Feinstein?

      Now about the leak.

It turns out that Ms. Monica L. McLean, equipped with a law degree and a member of the California bar, the license for obtaining which requires passing a polygraph examination, was prepped for passing that polygraph by none other than her life long friend and California roommate psychologist Christine Blasey Ford. This according to Ford’s boyfriend at the time.

What was Ms. Monica L. McLean doing for the DOJ and FBI? She retired in 2016 after the Trump election. Turns out she started out as a Special Agent in the Counsel Division and eventually migrated to becoming a PIO. What’s a PIO? Stands for Public Information Officer. What do PIOs do? Among other things they manage public relations and maintain and cultivate “relationships” with reporters and news organizations. Such as the Washington Post and the NYT.

So, is Monica L. McLean, Beach Friend aka life-long best friend, recently retired FBI public affairs specialist, somebody who ought to be interviewed by the FBI in connection with the sexual abuse charges by Christine Blasey Ford against Brett Kavanaugh? One would think so.

Perhaps this new information is incentivizing the FBI to wrap up its case today or tomorrow. Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.

Fr. Heilman has us praying these special prayers at the end of our Novena prayers as a part of the 54 day Novena for our Nation ending on Sunday.

“As you pray this St. Michael Chaplet, during these last nine days (Sept. 29 – Oct. 7), please add these two intentions:

“Lord, through the intercession of Mary, St. Michael and his army of angels, please help Justice Kavanaugh to be selected as a Supreme Court Justice.”

“Lord, through the intercession of Mary, St. Michael and his army of angels, please help David Daleiden. Specifically, that the gag order on his unreleased videos to be abolished, the cases against him to be thrown out, and for the remaining footage to be liberated.”

Light is shining ever more brightly into places too many people in Washington do not want it to go.

      1. I’m going to Rehoboth Beach in a week and a half–wonder if I can find McLean–hee hee–my friend has a beach house there–we do a girls’ trip up there once a year. What a terribly liberal area–talk about LBG, etc., etc.-friendly! My friend’s house is almost right across the street from the Catholic Church. She was at Mass one Sunday when Biden was there. He received Communion–she was so angry she followed him out to his limousine fussing that he had no right to go to Communion. Needless to say the secret service dudes kept her at a distance. She wrote to the bishop there about it, but no surprise–she received no response.

      1. What drew my attention is the Ford’s ‘extensive renovations” to their Palo Alto house including 2 bedrooms and a bath and a second front door. That renovation was completed in 2008.

The idea that second front door was installed because Mrs. Blasey-Ford is claustrophobic is ridiculous. Now a completely discredited claim. That story about the reason for the second front door just doesn’t ring true. Sorry but it is as phony as a $3 bill.

The rental market in Palo Alto is astounding. Home of Stanford University. Rents can be upwards of $3,500 per month for a two bedroom apartment.

The question that should be pursued is whether the Ford’s were renting out that “extensive renovation” likely illegally. The IRS should be conducting its own investigation.

Nevertheless, the problem is that the damage is done to the country. The milk is spilt and there is no way to put it back in the carton. Whichever way the vote comes out for Judge Kavanaugh the door has been opened to a vicious campaign of division at least through the Midterm elections with Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford as the central characters and protagonists of a very sad story. Each a wedge to be pounded into the body politic until it cracks.

The whole election perhaps determining the future course of our country is going to turn on a 35 year old uncorroborated allegation that is falling apart by the day? The prospect is depressing as hell. Literally.

The 54 Day Novena for Our Nation is ending on Sunday Oct. 7. I believe we are going to have to keep praying for our country to Our Lady and St. Michael for the indefinite future.

        2. I believe it is fitting we revisit the July 1917 apparition of Fatima pertaining to Hell. We live in a time where the Ten Commandments are neglected in countless ways, notably this Kavanaugh Trial. Further, I watched a counter demonstration on some campus whereupon the counter demonstrators ripped pro-kavanaugh posters from the hands and destryoed them…(see Hannity Fox 10/3/18.)
Beyond the repulsiveness, this is a crime of Robbery and destruction of personal property.

          https://www.marian.org/fatima/story.php?NID=7263&title=Fatima-in-the-Month-of-July

One hundred years ago on July 13, Our Lady entrusted three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, with a great secret. Father Robert Fox, a renowned expert on Fatima, explains:

The Fatima apparition of July 13, 1917, has much significance for today. Many are weakening or have lost faith in the existence of the infinite and just God. Among many, there is little or no faith in the reality of hell. Yet, in the July apparitions, the three little shepherd children were shown a vision of hell so terrible, Sr. Lucia wrote that if they had not been promised they would all go to Heaven, she thought they would have died on the spot. God’s mercy is infinite. So is His justice. But for God’s mercy through the precious blood of Jesus to benefit souls, He requires our faith, repentance, and openness to His merciful love. Otherwise, His justice must prevail.

The children beheld countless souls of sinners in hell. Our Lady, who is our Mother of Mercy, kindly but sadly said,

“God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved, there will be peace.”

The July apparition with its call to devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary requires living a life of Christian virtue as Mary did. It is most needed today.

          Obeying the Ten Commandments,
          receiving the Sacraments worthily and
in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and
          daily prayer —
especially by meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary — all these are required in living our personal consecration to Mary’s Immaculate Heart.

To aid us in this call, our Mother of Mercy gave us two prayers to recite. She said, “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say often, especially when you make some sacrifice:

‘Oh Jesus, this is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’

When you recite the Rosary, after each mystery say: ‘O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.'”

Our Lady said: “If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved, there will be peace.” Our Lady also said that if we do not heed Heaven’s call, much punishment will befall the world: “War, hunger, and persecution of the Church and the Holy Father.”

She emphasized the importance of First Saturdays along with consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in preventing these things.

The late Fr. Joaquin Maria Alonso, a Claretian and the official historian of Fatima, told me that the loss of faith was predicted in the Fatima message. “In Portugal, the Dogma of Faith will always be preserved.” This implies it will be lost in other places. We now know that the third part of the Fatima secret, told to Sr. Lucia at this apparition, concerned the many martyrs to the faith, including the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981.

Latest Medjugorje Message, October 2, 2018 – Apparitions to Mirjana

“Dear children, I am calling you to be courageous and to not grow weary, because even the smallest good—the smallest sign of love—conquers evil which is all the more visible. My children, listen to me so that good may overcome, so that you may come to know the love of my Son. This is the greatest happiness—the hands of my Son that embrace, of Him who loves the soul, of Him who has given Himself for you and is always giving Himself anew in the Eucharist, of Him who has the words of eternal life. To come to know His love, to follow in His footsteps, means to have a wealth of spirituality. This is the wealth which gives good feelings and sees love and goodness everywhere.

Apostles of my love, my children, be like the rays of the sun which with the warmth of my Son’s love warm everyone around them. My children, the world needs apostles of love; the world needs much prayer, but prayer spoken with the heart and the soul and not only pronounced with the lips. My children, long for holiness but in humility, in the humility which permits my Son to do that which He desires through you.

My children, your prayers, your words, thoughts and actions—all of this either opens or closes the doors to the Kingdom of Heaven for you. My Son showed you the way and gave you hope, and I am consoling and encouraging you because, my children, I had come to know pain, but I had faith and hope. Now I have the reward of life in the Kingdom of my Son. Therefore, listen to me, have courage and do not grow weary. ”

  11. My husband and I were guardians of the statue of Our Lady of America back around 2001 or 2002. Oh, the spiritual warfare! The stories I could tell! But what I will say is that in 2005 there was a reconsideration of our nation to the Immaculate Conception done at the shrine. The bishops were due in Baltimore the next day. Only one showed up. I think it was Wyoming? Also the papal Nuncio was there. They used a statue of OL of Fatima with light hair and put a cape on her because they didn’t have one of OK of America. Fr Angelis gave the homily and directly referenced her messages. The rest of the bishops faced in their assent. I believe the consecration helped.

    1. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:22-23)

And still, our Mother intercedes for such as these via our prayer and sacrifices while the Good Shepherd searches to find them.

Who will be participating in the Rosary Coast to Coast on Sunday? If so, where will you be praying?

I have been doing the 54 Day Novena for our Country. I will go to confession either tonight or tomorrow morning before daily mass. I will be fasting all day tomorrow (ugh). I will be joining another parish in town (not the one we belong to) for a candle-lit Rosary at 4:00 on Sunday 10/7.

      1. That reminds me of a couple of images I wanted to share. I took these this summer at the height of the roaring temperatures and drought. This first tiny cactus was hiding under some dry scrub. I would have missed it had I not been looking down, wiping the sweat from my eyes at that precise moment. Her ringlet of blooms looks like a little crown.

I found even more as I slogged along, scattered around the desert. I’d have missed seeing them too, but was more attentive for the rest of the trek. Maybe hard to imagine, but such as these brought much joy at regular intervals.

          1. What I like about the second shot, Mick: See those two orangey stalks of dead grass cutting diagonally right and left? I had to get in real low two snap this since those cacti were so small. Because of the depth of field, and the way the light is hitting those stalks… those stalks –– although in the way –– are virtually transparent. It’s also like the dead ‘curtains’ are being drawn back on the beauty of those cacti with their blooms! Ahh, maybe i just have a peculiar way of looking at things.

But my daughter took a photography course last semester at our local community college; and ever since then, she’s been using jargon such as “depth of field.” I don’t understand what she’s saying, but she sure sounds like she knows what she’s talking about.

Nah, your way of looking at thinks isn’t peculiar; it’s inspired, and it’s inspiring.

          1. There’s just something about a cactus bloom, Jen. Of all the plant life on the planet, cacti seem the least likely to produce flowers. In the dry season, it appears as if it should be impossible. Then when God is ready, in precisely the right season, He says, “bloom!” Maybe followed by, “look here.”

These cacti are particularly special because they are quite small. Not much taller than 6″.

When I was growing up in the Midwest, my grandparents used to take me mushroom hunting in the proper season. For Morels. That cactus bloom trek sorta reminded me of that because they were the only variety in bloom, plus they were sparse and hidden… very difficult to find.

To me, it’s like finding nothing less than gold nuggets. The more work in the searching, the more valuable the nugget!

I found myself loving just prior to the Hail Mary praying upon the ‘USA State” for each tenth of the decade and thinking of you (& Father) in Montana, Steve in SD (?); and so on. Rest assured, I prayed for ALL in the USA.

This {USA} rosary is awesome. Though, I did not like the ‘switch’ in continuity of the names in the middle. I’d rather it be consistent throughout the rosary. It actually interrupted my prayer as I soent time and energy trying to fix the problem than praying.

  15. So I am roaming around the Holy League website trying to find out what the schedule is for Sunday Oct. 7. I stumbled on to this description of the Holy League. it is a Holy League of Nations. Modeled after the Holy League of Nations in the 16th century.

    http://holyleagueofnations.com/about-the-hlon/

    So there’s this:

    “Holy League History

Pope St. Pius V formed the original Holy League in response to the dire situation in which Christian Europe found itself in 1571. Small bands of Catholic men and remnant armies from various nations came together under the spiritual leadership of the saintly pontiff and the military leadership of Don John of Austria.

By praying the rosary and fasting, they implored the help of God’s grace, through the intercession of the Mother of God, and, by the grace of Almighty God, on October 7, 1571, at the Battle of Lepanto, the Christian fleet won a crushing victory, saving Christendom and western civilization.

The New Holy League of Nations

At this “watershed” moment in history, the Clarion Call of the Immaculata has sounded throughout the world. From the ends of the earth, Her children are responding. To combat the forces of evil in today’s society, the Holy League of Nations, under the supernatural power of grace, strives to transform the culture through faith-filled prayer and fasting. Nations across the globe are uniting, in prayers of reparation and petition. We are uniting in Spiritual Warfare. We are uniting to stand with The Woman, Clothed with the Sun. (Revelation 12: 1)”

So this Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. What was that all about?

Here is an amazing description of how the Battle of Lepanto came about and what the stakes were. The parallels to the situation in the world today is sobering.

Christians vs Turks? Conservatives vs Progressives?

Tell me who Don Juan of Austria reminds of?

“Ottoman ships tried to turn the left flank of the Christian line, and while they appeared to succeed, the Catholic ships responded — amid a blinding hail of cannon blasts, arrows, grenades, and gunfire — in pinning the Muslim ships against Scropha Point. There, against the shoals, the Muslim vessels were trapped — and, at first, the Mohammedans fought with the ferocity of trapped animals. But more Catholic ships joined the battle, and what had been the right of the Ottoman line began to splinter, the Christian slaves on the Ottoman ships revolted, and Ottoman captains and crews, sensing disaster, beached their ships, hoping to escape to shore. By early afternoon, the Catholic left had emerged victorious.

At the head of the Catholic center was Don Juan aboard the flagship Real. For him, and for the Muslim commander Ali Pasha, the battle was a joust. They fired shots to announce their presence one to the other, and then drove to the clash, using their galleys as steeds. The ships crashed together, Don Juan in the lead, and everywhere the line erupted with explosions of cannons, bombs, gunfire, and the clash of swords and battle axes, while silent-flying deadly arrows thudded into timber and men.

It appeared that in this violent shipyard scrum, Don Juan’s ship and men were getting the worst of it — despite the handsome hero’s pet monkey hurling Ottoman grenades back at the enemy — until Marco Antonio Colonna, commander of the papal galleys, rammed his own flagship into Ali Pasha’s. The surging Catholic forces, in what had become an infantry battle fought across ships’ decks, swept the Muslims aside. Ali Pasha himself was killed and beheaded, and when Don Juan waved away the present of the severed head, it was tossed overboard. The Holy League’s banner was raised aloft the captured Ottoman flagship, and Ali Pasha’s banner — the sultan’s own undefeated standard made of green silk and with the prophet’s name threaded through it 28,900 times in gold — was Don Juan’s.”

We are being recruited by Our Lady to join the forces of the New Holy League of Nations. The battle ahead will be fierce. Dangerous. Perhaps even very bloody. The enemy appears to have overwhelming numbers. Just like the Sultan. It will take faith and courage to overcome the enemies of Judeo-Christian Western Civilization.

“… the Christian slaves on the Ottoman ships revolted, and Ottoman captains and crews, sensing disaster, beached their ships, hoping to escape to shore. By early afternoon, the Catholic left had emerged victorious… ”

Time to choose. For real. Time once again — after 447 years — for the Christian slaves in the Secular Progressive galleys to revolt and drive the Diabolical captains and crews to beach their ships. That would be us.

Don’t know about anybody else but I find all of this to be quite amazing.

    1. It’s wonderful history and purpose, Ed! The President of the Holy League of Nations is Fr. Richard Heilman from the Diocese of Madison, WI. From that diocese has come many a potent spearheading effort to re-evangelize this country. The bishop, Bishop Robert Morlino, has spoken and continues to speak, fully and strongly, on so many issues related to rebuilding a culture of life.

Cardinal Raymond Burke, at one time, was the Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse, WI, a neighboring diocese to Madison. From the La Crosse diocesan history: “Bishop Raymond Burke, a diocesan native from Richland Center, 1985-1993 — Burke, who now is a cardinal, preceded the Jubilee Year of 2000 with three years of prayer, fidelity and obedience. Perhaps his most notable achievement was conceiving the idea for and launching the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on La Crosse’s far South Side, a popular destination of pilgrims.”

  16. Hey Charlie and everyone at TNRS …I went to Saint Paul’s last Sunday. After Mass, we all said the Saint Michael prayer led by Monsignor Ken. Went to Mass at St. Anthony’s on Wednesday. After Mass we all said the Saint Michael prayer led by Fr. Francis. Went to the Sorrowful Mother Shrine this morning for confession (boy did I need confession…goodness!!!) and Mass. After Mass we all said the St Michael prayer led by our priest, Fr Scott!!!! So I asked Fr. Scott….who has said we should say St Michael prayer after Mass? He replied our very own Bishop Daniel Thomas of Toledo!!! Whoop!!! I think you can add him to your list of trustworthy bishops!

I have such a strong devotion to St Michael. I say the prayer to him often throughout the day cuz I’m such a big fraidy cat!!! But honestly it gives me goosebumps to hear the whole congregation praying that great prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII !!!! I asked Father if he felt that the Triumph was soon to follow and he said yes he believed so… Also, can you all pray for his brother, Timothy….Father Scott was very very sad and distressed at seeing his brother at death’s door. Maybe pray for Fr Scott too….Thank you all and God Save All Here!!! xoxo TNRS

  18. This article made my blood run cold. I’m sorry to inject it here, but I’m wondering if Charlie knows anything about this history. I get a Renew America email with links to a number of different articles and websites. Obviously they are very conservative articles, but also seem to be reliable writers. If this article is true, it has turned everything on its head for me.

On a positive note, I love the description of Lepanto! It must happen again!

    1. Hi Annie, I check out the Renew America site from time to time, too. I find it spotty. It has some very good stuff, some shaky stuff, and a little wild-eyed speculation. The article you linked to referenced Vince Foster’s apparent suicide. That this was no suicide at all, but that the Clinton’s were getting rid of someone troublesome to them, has been a suspicion in conservative circles for a very long time. There were certainly many deeply suspicious anomalies in the Foster death…but despite all the speculation, there never has been anything close to actual proof of the suspicions. This article (notably by the respected, but sometimes lurid, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, business editor of London’s Daily Telegraph) posits that Brett Kavanaugh, while working with Ken Starr on the Clinton investigation, was part of a conspiracy to protect Clinton from accountability for the Foster death.

Given all the lurid revelations that have come out in the last year on so many things, I understand why people will find some credibility in even the wildest stories. It makes sense that when nothing is as it seems, people will speculate on everything. Even so, we are going to stick to things here for which there is some evidence or at least some plausibility. That the conservative young Brett Kavanaugh was running interference for liberal Bill Clinton – and at the same time he was investigating him vigorously – is deeply implausible – even if questions about Foster’s death are not. We could get caught up in a myriad of conspiracy concerns here if we did not stick to that standard – evidence, or at least substantial plausibility. If we did, we would risk not paying serious attention to those things for which there is evidence and substantial plausibility – and that would take us away from what we need to do.

I edited out the link to this story – though anyone who wants to see it can just look up Renew America and the latest article by Evans-Pritchard. Frankly, there are as many different stories about who covered up for Clinton as there are theories about who assassinated Kennedy. I did not find this particularly offensive, but I do think it leads us away from what we need to focus on and is implausible. So…I ompromised by removing the link and also telling people how to look it up on their own.

    1. Bob,

The Pope’s words bear much wisdom and truth. He is absolutely right that we all need a personal relationship with Jesus.

But I would ask to whom is he addressing his remarks? Is it the “rigid” Catholics he’s criticized throughout his papacy? I would hope that he is addressing those cardinals, bishops, priests and deacons who live, in effect, double lives — lying, engaging in immorality, covering up clerical abuse, embezzling money, etc. For the most part these members of the clergy are not part of the “rigid crowd” but are rather open to change and to adapting to the ways of the world. I would assert that it is this group, more than any other, who needs to have a personal relationship with Christ. They need to come to Jesus! Think of a Church that is filled with priests and prelates who carry Christ in their hearts! The world would be set on fire!

      God bless you.

  21. Observations and points well taken in this piece released yesterday, October 5th.

As Catholic Scandal Unfolds, Pope Francis Looks Increasingly Blameworthy
The report reveals a pope indifferent to the complaints of abuse survivors, and who has surrounded himself with others accused of covering up claims.

The recent publication of a devastating report on Pope Francis in the German news magazine Der Spiegel marks a new phase in the continuing crisis in the Catholic Church. The report (as yet unavailable in English) is entitled: “Thou shalt not lie: The silence of the shepherds.”

Contradicting the widespread image of Pope Francis as a “reformer” concerned to expose clerical sexual abuses within his church and punish the offenders, the report reveals a pope who for years has been indifferent to the complaints of abuse survivors, and has surrounded himself with an inner circle of close advisors, several of whom have been accused of cover-ups.

Der Spiegel’s report is decisively important for at least three reasons.

    1. Ordinary people are speaking out.

The report is the carefully documented result of hard journalistic work, some of it in Argentina, where Francis, then Jorge Bergoglio, had been cardinal archbishop before his elevation to the papacy in 2013. It also gives voice to ordinary lay Catholics whose complaints about clerical sex abuse Francis has studiously rejected or ignored. These charges do not come from Vatican insiders who want a grudge match with Francis over doctrinal differences.

For example: An Argentine woman, Julieta Añazco, says that a priest sexually abused her when she was six years old. She and 13 other survivors wrote to the pope shortly after his election. They have had no reply. A defender of Argentine abuse survivors, Juan Pablo Gallego, says that in Argentina, Francis is suspected of having protected rapists and child abusers “for years.” This witness points to a certain Fr. Grassi, now in prison for raping teenage boys. Francis ordered a legal report to defend Grassi.

When Gallego met then Cardinal Bergoglio in 2006 to discuss the complaints, Gallego found him indifferent. According to Gallego, Francis was “withdrawn and mistrusting, he said no word about the fact that the Church paid Grassi’s lawyers. The current image of an open, sympathetic Pope Francis does not fit the man whom I sat in front of at the time.”

    2. Der Spiegel changed its mind.

Der Spiegel is a major European news outlet with a left-leaning bias. No one could seriously suspect it of wanting to do a hatchet job on Francis because of ideological differences. In fact, early in Francis’ Papacy, Der Spiegel published an adulatory article on him, describing him as a pope who would “clean up the Catholic Church and improve its image.”

The story declared: “He has taken his office to heavenly heights. He makes it easy for people to love him. They like his incongruous approach and his plain words.”

But in a single stroke, the new Der Spiegel report demolishes the argument of Francis’ apologists that we should dismiss the accusations against him because they came from supposedly “right wing” sources. The report comes from a periodical that once thought that he had raised the papacy to “heavenly heights.”

    3. The Watergate paradigm doesn’t apply.

Third, before the Der Spiegel report, attention had been focused on a rather narrow issue: What had Francis known about the decades-long sexual abuses of which former cardinal Theodore McCarrick stood accused, and when had he known it? (More on McCarrick below). Those questions forced the debate into the Watergate-type mold, long familiar to American journalism: What did he know, and when did he know it?

Der Spiegel’s report helpfully redirects the focus away from American obsessions with Watergate to a broader and more salient inquiry: How has Francis governed his church? What should Francis have known, and what should he have done about it? Is he a reformer, or is he part of the problem?

It is becoming unmistakably clear that he is not only part of the problem, but also the chief obstacle to its solution.

    How the Current Crisis Emerged

As we have written, this crisis threatens the Roman Catholic Church as nothing else has since the events of the Reformation just over 500 years ago. It is not, any longer, simply a crisis about pedophilia, or the abuse of young children. As Maureen Mullarkey wrote in The Federalist recently, the current scandals are about homosexuality, including the abuse of adult Roman Catholic seminarians and clergy by higher ranking homosexual clergy, and the concealment of those offenses by other high-ranking clergy.

The particular scandal that triggered the current public discussion is that of McCarrick, the former cardinal archbishop of Washington, D.C., who was a close advisor to Pope Francis and reputedly influential as a lobbyist in Francis’ election to the papacy. In the course of his long career in the church, McCarrick routinely abused and assaulted seminarians. And everyone knew, or should have known.

As far back as 2012, mainstream media outlets were inches away from running stories about McCarrick — a “progressive” Catholic — only to have the stories shut down. A book in late 2002 outlined the abuses by an anonymous bishop, immediately identified as McCarrick, “who was notorious for taking groups of seminarians to his weekend home and sexually harassing or abusing them but was nonetheless promoted up through the ranks by Pope John Paul II.”

Church officials were contacted, but nothing was done.

    McCarrick’s Rise and Fall

As archbishop of Newark from 1986 to 2000, McCarrick had a “well established” reputation for visiting the seminary, where he would make unwanted sexual advances at seminarians. There was a long-running joke in Newark’s seminary that they had to “hide the handsome ones” before McCarrick arrived.

Former seminarians, speaking to the National Catholic Register, describe McCarrick’s visits as an “uncomfortable experience.” McCarrick would often touch seminarians, including by putting his hands on their thighs. Then he would invite the willing to stay the night at his beach house, paid for by the church, or at the cathedral rectory in Newark.

The behavior went far above and beyond activities “between two consenting adults.” This was about power, and the abuse of subordinates who felt powerless to fight back. It was like the Hollywood of Harvey Weinstein, but within the training grounds of the Catholic priesthood.

That culture, which started at the top of Newark’s diocese, filtered down. One priest, Father Desmond Rossi, has publicly alleged that he was sexually assaulted by two transitional deacons in the late 1980s. Father Rossi immediately told the archdiocesan authorities about the assault and went before a review board. Despite finding his version of events “credible,” nothing was done, and Rossi even faced retaliation.

Another priest, speaking anonymously, recalls being invited to a priests-only cocktail party that turned out to be a gay sex party. “They were all carrying big mixed drinks, pink ones, it was like something out of Sex in the City.” After being whistled at, among other things, the priest left the party, while those who remained inched closer to each other on the couch.

Another priest, who was ordained during McCarrick’s reign in Newark, said “a lot of people lost their innocence in the seminary.” Seminarians would come to him in tears. According to this priest, there were two types of seminarians: “You had the men who were there because they had a deep love of the Lord and a vocation to serve his Church … But there was a subculture, with its own group of men, that was openly homosexual and petty and vindictive with everyone else.”

This priest was warned before entering the seminary that he would “see things that weren’t right.” Seminarians were advised to lock their door at night to avoid “visitors.” Even after McCarrick left the Newark diocese in 2000, abuses continued. In 2014, Father Mark O’Malley was removed as rector of St. Andrew’s Hall, the college seminary, after he allegedly hid a camera in the bedroom of a young seminarian.

Understandably, this culture — not just a culture of open homosexuality, but of textbook sexual assault and harassment, and the abuse of power — left many priests incredibly demoralized. In the words of the National Catholic Register, “One priest said that some graduating classes from the middle 1990s have seen nearly half of their members leave ministry, and concerns have been raised about the behavior of some of those who remain in ministry.” All this was an open secret: In his important 2008 book Sacrilege, the investigator Leon Podles had thoroughly documented it.

McCarrick, meanwhile, had moved on and up. He was named archbishop of Washington in 2000, and soon after promoted to cardinal by John Paul II. The fall came, however, when it emerged that McCarrick had repeatedly abused at least one minor, “James,” beginning when James was 11. James, now a grown man, has struggled with alcoholism, which broke up his marriage, and attempted suicide multiple times. He’s been sober since he was 33.

As an adult, James threatened McCarrick that he would tell all. According to James, McCarrick responded: “No one’s going to believe you. You’re a drunk. You’re an idiot. … Do you know how important I am?”

    Rot in the Catholic Hierarchy

Once these allegations came to light, all hell broke loose. McCarrick was forced out as cardinal and will stand trial under (church) canon law next year. But greater questions remained. How could such a high-ranking Roman Catholic official have gotten away with this behavior for so long? Why were secular media outlets aware of this behavior, and not the church’s hierarchy?

Then came the accusations of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who had served as the papal “nuncio” or ambassador to the United States from 2011 to 2016. According to Viganò, Pope Benedict had learned of McCarrick’s behavior toward adult seminarians and removed him from public life. When Francis was elected pope in 2013, Viganò says he warned Francis about McCarrick’s abuses, and gave him a dossier on McCarrick’s misdeeds. According to Viganò, Francis then ignored the warnings, and promoted McCarrick to the position of a close personal advisor.

Viganò himself is a very senior Vatican official, an archbishop, and a former ambassador. His good character has been vouched for — at some risk to their own careers — by other leading Catholic prelates. He has produced several documents that appear to corroborate at least some of his charges and, to the embarrassment of the Vatican, he has used those documents to rebut one main objection to his credibility.

Viganò repeated the substance of his earlier charges last week, added at least one important additional one (that Francis had halted the investigation of sex abuse scandals against a British cardinal, now dead), and openly invited his former colleague, Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, to confirm his charges about Francis’ handling of McCarrick.

For his efforts, Viganò’s credibility has been repeatedly attacked. Pope Francis even made a veiled denunciation of Vigano as the Great Accuser — a kind of Satan. It may be that Viganò’s hands are not so clean either: The purpose and effect of Viganò’s intervention as nuncio during an in-house investigation of former Archbishop John Nienstadt of St. Paul-Minneapolis has not been fully explained, and further disclosure might affect the judgment of his credibility.

But Viganò’s personal credibility aside, the pope’s handling of the McCarrick case remains highly troubling. In the words of Brett Decker, writing at USA Today, “For Church leaders to deny knowledge of notorious, serial abuses that appeared in print in prominently published books strains credulity.”

    The Pope who Stonewalled

Just look at how Francis has reacted to the charges. When Vigano’s original eleven-page memorandum detailing the basis of his charges was made public, the global media questioned Francis about the charges. He told reporters to “read the statement carefully and make your own judgment.”

“I will not say a single word on this,” Francis said. Then, he invited the world press to investigate — Viganò. Francis has maintained his arrogant, stony silence since then, except to make oblique attacks on Viganò in contexts (like sermons) in which he could not be questioned.

When The New York Times took up Francis’ invitation to the press to investigate Viganò’s allegations, not a single cardinal in the Roman Curia (the papal court in Rome) was willing to answer the Times’ questions. In an in-flight press conference during his recent return journey from a visit to the Baltics, Francis refused to allow any questions from English-speaking journalists.

So much for Francis’ calls for openness, dialogue, and accountability. So far, Francis has not said one word about the McCarrick affair.

Francis Denies Bishops’ Request to Investigate

Since the McCarrick scandal broke, there have been two other significant developments relating to the Catholic efforts to expose and correct abuses. On neither has Francis shown himself deserving of his flock’s trust.

After McCarrick became front page news, the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, petitioned Pope Francis on Aug. 16 for a meeting to discuss the appointment of an “Apostolic Visitor” – essentially, a Vatican-led investigation into how McCarrick had climbed so far in the church despite the notoriety of his conduct.

After holding DiNardo off for weeks, the pope finally agreed to meet with him on Sept. 23. Also present at the meeting was Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

In characteristic Vatican fashion, the pope’s decision at the meeting was simply not revealed. But it has become clear that the pope has flatly turned down the request made by his own American bishops for an investigation. As his “counter-offer” to the American bishops’ request, the pope reportedly proposed that they take a week-long spiritual retreat.

The Global Meeting of Catholic Bishops

The second development was that Francis called for a “summit” of world Catholic bishops to meet in Rome next February to discuss the “protection of minors.” That is well and good. But it also looks like an attempt to distract public attention away from another class of victims whom Francis prefers to ignore: Catholic seminarians at risk from the clerical predators who run their seminaries.

This self-imposed limitation on the global bishops’ agenda looks to us like more than a transparent effort to hide the sins of the hierarchy. The problem of clerical sexual abuse of minors — and it is a very serious matter indeed — should not be allowed to eclipse the also-serious problem of the sexual abuse of vulnerable young adults.

Note that the abuse of minors is predominantly a problem about the conduct of the lower clergy, like parish priests or teachers, while the problem of predation in seminaries is primarily a matter of the conduct of bishops and higher-ranking clergy. In other words, we suspect that February’s global summit may be designed to scapegoat the lower clergy, while continuing the evil practice of ignoring the abuses more characteristic of the higher clergy. The lower clergy are being set up as the fall-guys, and the issues of homosexuality, sexual harassment, and the abuse of power among the hierarchy are being quietly swept under the rug. Again.

So, is there any chance of reform? The best hope lies in an engaged, activist, and protesting Catholic laity. Sadly, in our conversations with some of our Catholic colleagues and friends, we have noticed what seems to us to be a growing resignation, indifference, or even apathy in the face of a steadily worsening Catholic crisis. What accounts for that?

After years, or rather decades, of news about clerical misconduct, are Catholics (or some of them) beginning to suffer scandal-fatigue? The outcome of this crisis lies, as it always has, entirely in the hands of Catholic lay persons.

I think laity is having exhaustion. In my neck of the woods trying to bring Catholics together. So many have left.

    2. Fantastic, comprehensive article! It brings together a lot of what we have read piecemeal in a number of places. If the outcome of the crisis is in our hands, what do we do now (besides praying)?! The bishops, some of them, aren’t even listening to their brother bishops, to the few who are speaking out. I know Pope Benedict said we might have a smaller remnant, and that may be taking place. But we still have to act in some way, strength in numbers.

Our bishop is having a series of meetings around the diocese. He is someone mentioned in Vigano’s testimony, so those meetings will be useless! I know from experience how a diocesan or parish meeting can be run, Alinsky style! We have a strong voice in some places, such as Father Z, who doesn’t mince words in saying what the problem is; of course Charlie also. When will the seminaries and hierarchy be cleaned up, the homosexual subculture?

I’ll just keep praying until the Lord shows me what more to do, and pray that after tomorrow’s Rosary around the world, we’ll see the beginning of a Lepanto victory!

      1. That’s it, Annie: Prayer and next right steps! It will be glorious to see how God unfolds His Plan, what He calls each of us to do – for some it will be steps virtually hidden, nevertheless, powerful while other will be called to a public witness. Such a future full of hope have we, even as we navigate the current chaos and division!

  23. Just released is the news that Pope Francis has ordered an investigation of McCarrick: http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/pope-francis-orders-new-thorough-study-of-archbishop-mccarrick

Archbishop Chaput, another voice crying in the wilderness, has made rock solid statements via his intervention at the synod yesterday. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/pope-francis-orders-new-thorough-study-of-archbishop-mccarrick

Prayers for him and all the courageous prelates in attendance, such as Bishop Frank Caggiano of Bridgeport, Connecticut, who said on Thursday that the Church must discuss its sexual-abuse crisis if it is to gain the trust of young people.. http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/bishop-caggiano-youth-synod-bishops-must-address-sex-abuse-crisis

And, also, at the Synod on Youth yesterday, Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney, Australia issued a comprehensive mea culpa for all the ways in which bishops, priests, religious and lay people have failed young people. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/archbishop-fisher-apologizes-to-young-people-for-failures-of-church-members

(If you ever like to play music as background while you accomplish tasks, have a listen to the ethereal selections of eclectic genres – with exquisite vocals, splendid pipe organ, orchestral instruments and percussion as well as the guitars and keyboards which often accompany the music that appeals to the young. guitars which were used at Archbishop Fisher’s installation from nearly four years ago. Archbishop Fisher has a long history of working with youth so he received a delightful welcome from the young people of his diocese before he entered St. Mary’s Cathedral. On You Tube, search “Installation of Most Rev Anthony Fisher, Ninth Archbishop of Sydney” and you can listen in at about 1:30 of the installation video to hear the kids.)

Unfortunately the battle in the US society may only get larger. The pro-abortion, anti life folks are fired up an who knows how they will use their aggression next. We need Mary’s intercession more than ever before.

    1. I find this most unedifying. Cardinal Ouellet confirms that McCarrick WAS under restrictions…but that Pope Francis had too much to read to know about it. Then he bases his recollections on Vatican documents that the Vatican will NOT release. If they are so dispositive in proving there was no cover-up or intentional promotion of predators, that fact could largely be confirmed by the release of those documents. Then he goes on to say how Amoris Laetitia is part of the “living” Magisterium and the universal reversal of the Church’s teaching of several millennia by Pope Francis is the same. In America, we know what “living” Constitution means – that anything can be changed by the arbitrary will of whoever currently holds power. Setting aside the nasty swipes at Vigano personally, the facts in this letter confirm what Vigano has said. We have a lot of wood to chop.

    1. Hello, Mary Anne. As you know, we love and welcome Our Lady of America here as we continue praying, hoping and waiting for the enthronement that our Mother requested. A friend in our community personally knew the receiver of these messages, Sister Mildred Mary Neuzil, or Sr. Millie, as he calls her. Soon, and very soon, may our country become what Our Lady of America wants us to be: a country dedicated to Her purity. Often, people think and speak about physical purity alone, yet, everything we think and do springs from the condition of our hearts. Our Lady of America said:

They must have faith and believe firmly in my love for them. I desire that they be the children of my Pure Heart. I desire, through my children in America, to further the cause of faith and purity among peoples and nations. Let them come with confidence and simplicity, and I, their Mother, will teach them to become pure like to my Heart that their own hearts may be more pleasing to the Heart of my Son.

What a commission! May those of us in this community of TNRS-ASOH BE who and what our Mother calls us to be. And to that end: Come Holy Spirit! Come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary your well beloved Spouse.

      1. It is such a tragedy that Our Lady of America has gone, apparently, the way of Fatima! It makes me sad. Thank you for all this information. I will study it more and continue to spread her story. Please do keep in touch. Thank you ! God Bless! Ave Maria! Mary Anne

        1. It is sad that we humans are notoriously stiff-necked, Mary Anne. Still, God pursues us; His Mother never gives up on us; and there are faithful people who have responded to our Mother’s requests to pray for the many yet needing to make a return to the Lord. Into eternity, I shall ponder and give praise to the Lord that when our first parents fell, they – and we, their descendants – have lived through the Justice our deeds rightly deserve, yet, we were also granted extraordinary Mercy!

O wonder of your humble care for us!
O love, O charity beyond all telling,
to ransom a slave you gave away your Son!
O truly necessary sin of Adam,
destroyed completely by the Death of Christ!
          O happy fault
that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!

So, yes, a tragedy that our Mother has, too often, been ignored. At the same time, in the end, her Immaculate Heart WILL Triumph and the Rescue which Charlie has proclaimed from the beginning of his public work for the Lord WILL BE completed.
